Good report
Protoss v Terran games are all sort of becoming a blurr now. Some of the text was small for some reason. That stuff was really good advice though. I think I will try it out in my next 1v1. |

| William: I hope the small text wasn't too hard to read; I kept the paranthetical comments small so that people who weren't interested in learning strats could just ignore those and continue with the battle report. I was considering adding a separate margin for comments, but I figured that the default layout was already kinda narrow that this wouldn't have worked. Any suggestions are welcome. |

| Is this nonsense of 9.0+ battlereports ever gonna stop? 3 in 24 hours = own. I Still think FLS and the MOTWR should have both gotten 10.0's though, |

| Awesome possum, Shockwave. I liked the parentheticals the best. And BTW, I have beaten 12 stacked carriers with golaiths. Just not 12 stacked carriers with sheild batteries. (Shudder!) |

| Once you've got a Terran "contained," the wise thing to do is expand like mad. A good Terran player will know how to execute a tank/mine push. Basically, it totally owns ground. Goliaths counter Carriers, DT's aren't effective, and Reavers < Tanks. I have a friend who has the push almost down to a science; I've fought it several times and done different strats each time...each one with bad results. My fleet of Carriers (I had 3 exps) died to his 3/3 Golgies, my Reaver drop was easily fought off with a few tanks, and my Dark Templar rush got owned by mines. After speaking with him, I found that Protoss MUST contain the Terran early with Dragoons; force him to push OUT of his base and not INTO yours. Then, while he's doing that, expand and put down like 12 gates. He'll be cutting your troops down like mad, but you have to keep them coming. Eventually, you'll be able to swarm him into submission. |

Hey shock,
I wonder how do you counter heavy metal. Currently I started to become a big fan of heavy metal and I found continously pumping vultures after you've got say 6 tanks are actually good against goons in small numbers. Mine right in front of them and attack move like 6 tanks can take down a mildly guarded expansion easily and quickly. And of course vultures are good at assacinating temps too.... =] |

| I sure wish I could figure out how to beat gay Toss. I always lose to Toss who go Carriers. It takes them awhile as long as I have the recon to know they are going for Carriers. The problem is that you have to build so many wraiths and goliaths and the Toss can just switch to zeals and storm your goliaths. If anybody can help me Terran/Toss msg me on battle.net. My names our L'iLNips[Fatal] and ChristTheKing. Thanx. |

Man, you are "da man".
Ok, I must admit in my game, I will expand earlier than you but I will never have the guts, when I do expand, to TRIPLE expand. I may double expand if I think he is weak or if he is thinking of expanding himself but you triple expand when you KNOW he is going to tank push you, like right now.
Boy, oh boy. Having said that, I do defend my expansions a bit better than you. :) May be I should try triple naked expansion sometimes. :) |

| Fast goons then mass zeals and storm. BTW you better know that they're going with heavy metal, because if they're going M&m you need to get storm like ten times quicker. |

Thanks guys, I'll keep trying to post BR's that are weighted toward strategy as I come across them. I'm horrible at remembering to take screenshots at the right time, though :-b.
In terms of strats against heavy metal, hmm I'm not confident in my abilities to take on a *well-executed* fact push. If my opponent makes a mistake, I can capitalize. If he's got it down to an art, though, I must admit that I don't have anti-fact strats perfected myself so I'd probably lose. I think templar are really the way to go, though. Dragoons/DTs in the beginning contain and force him to push his way out, use dragoon/zealots later on where dragoons target vultures and zealots target tanks, and use templars to psi him high ground. While I realize that targetting templar individually does work well, it's not easy to get to them if they're on high ground or are constantly popping in and out of shuttles. Again, there are still ways to get through this as Terran so if he doesn't make the mistake of clumping his tanks together, my templar can be of minimal effectiveness. I think others on the forum might have better ideas on how to counter heavy metal once it gets rolling, so I'll defer to them. |

Question:
If this guy had science vessels with his tank push, why did he not:
A) Stick a covert ops on that Science Facility and research lockdown, and
B) Pump a few wraiths with cloak out of the Starport he built in order to tech to Science Facility?
I think that might have been a better counter to your carrier mob. |
| #27 shockwave (exchange1.sensable.com)[17152] |
|
Hey Dev,
Yes, wraiths and lockdown would have been interesting against a carrier mob. The carrier mob strat relies on the element of surprise: the problem is that by the time you SEE The carrier mob, it is often too late to do anything immediate about it. I think goliaths were his best bet at that time because he had 2 facts already and his fact units were 2/2. If he had seen me going carriers ealier, I would have died miserably. But the time between when I first used the carriers and when I started winning decisively was only a matter of around 10 minutes, so it was pretty brief. There was no way he'd get enough wraiths to stop me (remember, I did have corsairs, and did have dingers although that wasn't mentioned), and ghosts would need to survive until they got enough manna. On short notice, goliaths were the only thing that prevented my initial carriers from plowing over his base initially. |
| #28 Hannibal (105user249.ctinets.com)[17164] |
|
Also I am guessing he is hurting for gas. Factory strat is gas heavy and he also get SV before he gets his natural. From the report it seems his natural did not help too much.
So the ghost and wraith suggesting is really not on. I think his gas is really low after all that goliaths already.
Thing about ghost is that it is so damn gas heavy and I really beleive a terran who doesn't have at least one expansion in mid-game means lockdown is not an option. |

|
I see. I wasn't aware that the time frame between the appearance of carriers and the end of the game was only 10 minutes or so.
I thought that if he had enough Goliaths to fend off your attack AND rebuild and attack your main, he could have teched to lockdown while he was defending...
Also, goliaths also work quite well with lockdown... fear the range. (:
I recall a game in which I played a Protoss who teched carrier... but he revealed it too early; I had scouted and destroyed his early expansions and he tried to defend it with the only carrier he had.
The upshot is this: small groups of Goliaths with repairing SCVs are just nasty against small groups of Carriers. (: |
