| Oh, and how could it <b>not</b> be a happy ending? I was trying to make it bittersweet, though. Hence the death of Spike. I was going to put more emotion there, like the Commander throwing his coffee mug against the wall in a fit of rage, but when I got to that part it just didn't... fit. |

Damn, all these people are saying, "yay its so great" and all that stuff. You know with all the exclamation marks and stuff. But I don't say that. I think its a great job, but you now, not that way. In a kind of solemn way. I always liked this series the best, and I would read another one of these before a new report by YRM. The story itself also kind of put me in this mood. It did a really good job of... emotion... Great job, but I hope you do continue this, maybe on a different world, maybe in a different day...

| I find it hard to accept the fact that not only is there a page dedicated to writing reports about a game, but there would be someone who got the impetus to make up a story about a fictional game. Not only is this a pathetic attempt to portray the so desired "epic sense" of a computer game by the name of "Starcraft," but it also says a lot about the people who think it is actually good literature. Not only is the text riddled with such embarrassing words and phrases that would make any writer feel ashamed, like "protoss carrier" and "zerg overlord," but the delivery fails to inspire even the smallest shred of respectability. English Major Student: I'm tempted to just write you off as a jealous-wannabe-writer who is simply annoyed a Poli-Sci and History major is doing what you dream of, and being successufl. But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. If you want to see an example of real prose, check out my Brigand series. But truly, I couldn't care less whether you in particular like either. I've conquered any residual guilt about my leisure activities, and I wrote this story for the people who enjoyed it, and apparently, that does not include you.
Thanks probe, thanks Alita for putting your opionion out somewhat more mildly (or just worse spelled). And, of course, thanks for the spam Warphead! People like you and I will make this comment section break 50! |

I expected to hear the oh-so ever effective insult "fuck off" or "fuck you." What can I expect from the same people who hail the efforts of this self proclaimed "successufl" writer. I understand this is your "opionion, "
as well. How can I be insulted when my arguments and nothing I have said had been challenged, except by the writer himself? All you pre-law and logic students should realize that "arrogant wretch" is argumentuum ad hominem (attack against man). How exactly does this hurt me?
As for woodman... would it surprise you to know that I have owned and played the game since about a month since the original game came out? My insults were concerning the actual use of those words, not my misunderstandings of them. Jumping to conclusions are we? When was the last time you saw something along the lines of "Zerg Overlord" in a book of literal integrity? Obviously you missed the point. In that case I'll spell it out: I don't like this story or the people who think it's good. It's laughable to see you twist and turn when someone disagrees with you.
As for the writer, exactly how many famous writers were English Majors? How can you say that is my dream without knowing me? What does having comments reaching 50 accomplish? You may be pleasing the people who enjoyed, but at what price are you sacrificing integrity and principle? If you know your writing is good and you feel you have expressed yourself to the best of your artistic capacity, why does it matter if people like it or hate it? So you determine that you are "succesufl" because a few people like your stories? That is your measure of your accomplishments? It seems to me that someone who bases their views on what others think of them is someone who is weak and lacks confidence. And you must rally together to attack me, thanking others for their help? Was it not Einstein who said, from hearing a book being released called "One Hundred Authors Against Einstein," "Why 100? If I were wrong, one would have been enough."
If you pre-pubescent, oily faced idiots knew anything about arguing, it would be that this is a difference of opinion, and thus anything said would be meaningless and trite. People who replied using profanity just tells me that they let their R-complex (the evolutionary left over of the our reptilian ancestors in our brain that allows humans to commit acts of violence and murder) take over their emotions. As soon as the lies and "truths" you hold about yourself and others are challenged, how do you react? With blind violence and anger, isn't this what causes most deaths and wars in the end? You cannot even ACCEPT the possibility someone has a different opinion than yours, and anyone who says anything else lacks any comprehension of writing and literature? That was geared not towards the writer and woodman, who seem to actually have the self control to attempt to hold their ground, although, to me at least, fail to do so. I guess I was right with my pre-formed prejudices all along.

Why do I think you want to write? It is one of my pre-formed prejudices about English majors. Comments reaching 50 make me feel good. I pleased the people who enjoyed, and did not see myself sacrificing integrity and priciple. I wrote this the way I wanted it.
It matters if people liked it, regardless of what I think about having expressed myself to the best of my artistic capacity because I like making people feel happy, or having them enjoy my work.
I do determine myself successful because a few people enjoyed my stories. That is one measure of my accomplishments. This does not mean I am weak or lack confidence. If I was weak and lacked confidence, you would be offending me right now. You are not. It is one of my measures of accomplishment. I see nothing wrong with people enjoying my writing being a measure of accomplishment. That is, after all what entertainment is about, right?
Here we come to the crux of the matter. This is not my life's work. This is not an attempt at a literary masterpiece. It is entertainment. And as such, it has succeeded beautifully (by my standards, and those are the only ones I really care about).
I thank others who attack you. Why? They think enough of me to be annoyed at your objections to my writing. I think this is rather complimentary, no? The thanks is for what the attacks reveal about their attitudes towards me, not for attacking you, or disliking you.
I believe it would be appropriate to end this post by saying I get about as much fun from you as you get from those who "twist and turn when someone disagrees with you".
yours,
'Praetor' Fred Wilson
P.S. I'm not pre-law or a logic student. Guess we were both wrong about each other's majors. |

Oh,yes, one more thing. You found humor (or disgust) in my including such fanciful creations as Zerg Overlords or Protoss Carriers in my fiction. This is quite analogous to your use of the R-complex. The R-complex is a fanciful quasi-genetic theory that violence and evil in the human form is left over from reptiles and could not be inherently 'mammal.' This is, in scientific terms, baloney. Reptiles, for one, are not more violent than any other type of animal, nor are mammals nicer.
In fact, the R-complex is about as proven as the faster-than-light warp drive. Less so, even, as it is far and away less likely to be an actual possibility in the world. You can laugh at my fanciful and un-realistic creations. I'll laugh at yours. |

Let there be no mistake about the purpose of this site. It's to provide entertainment. We can measure the entertainment a report provides by the number of positive comments, the rating etc. But what really matters to each person is how they percieve the report.
Personally, I really liked the PL:C stories. I've read books on real military encounters that I enjoyed less... probably because of my profession in some cases, but in most simply because Fred writes better than some of the authors of "serious" military history.
So EMS doesn't like it for the reasons he stated. He thinks the whole concept of this page is foolish. I say it's just as valid if not more so the huge entertainment complex built around physical sports. At least here the individual players get to express thier experiences.
If EMS can only take pleasure in entertainment so refined that some sort of cultural elite can enjoy it, I feel only pity for him. Fred likes what he does, I like what he does, most people here like what he does, and ultimately, that fulfills the mission of this site, |
| #48 English Major Student[28959] |
| proxy1-external.btnrug1.la.home.com |
You have got to be kidding me. Please tell me when I said your major was pre-law or logic? Go read what it said, I cant believe you actually said that too. I was saying it was for anyone who happened to be pre-law or logic and was reading that. I mean, come on.
As for the R-complex. When was the last time you saw a crocidile affectionately care for another croc (Im not talking about the protecting of its young, which is purely instinct, Im talking about other adults)? I guess scientific genius Carl Sagan was pulling all that I read about the R-complex out of the air when he explained it? What did you read? One or two critics of that theory? What are you talking about with the warp drive? Dissection analysis actually showed the parts of the brain to exist containing those lobes. It is scientifically proven humans, monkeys, and other simian relatives are genetically predispositioned for warmth and affection; somehow we are wired to be that way. You make no sense. Go read the works of James S. Prescott.
You seem to be as artistically inspiring and respectable as those boy bands or Ricky Martin when you said you measure your success on what other people say. So you are saying you feel accomplished as a person and a writer when 50 people comment? Thats shallow and meaningless. I fell sorry for people who think like that. Entertainment can be anything, saying what you wrote is means nothing at all. I can find watching dust form entertaining, obviously it is low-grade, but entertainment nonetheless. Your statement doesn't help your case because entertainment is arbitrary. The point is you are not making a signifigant contribution to the world of literacy, in fact, to me you are hurting it, and revealing a greater truth. So therefore I dont like your work and think anyone who takes it a real form of writing is simpleminded.
My preuidices were about the people commenting on this site, by the way. Why do I have to explain everything? Do all poli-sci and history major students have to have everything explained to them?
|

I just added a comment when I saw Mark's comment. I must agree with you on some things, Mark. But Im not saying realistic military books about war are good. There are plenty of other novels written over the years which involve wars, using the factors and themes of life and such. In fact, I think the movie Saving Private Ryan expresses those truths in an artiscally, yet rather gory at some points, respectable fashion.
Another thing is you can't determine the artistic merit of something bases on how many people like it. Then all the boy bands are the true artists, and the goal of all future artists is to please the public, and not to reveal what they feel is greater truth and beauty. True, many people like this form of "entertainment," but that does not mean it is good. And because I feel different should not subject me to crude and elementary attempts at wit.
Im not saying everything must be refined, but I just think that this story was too uninspired, juvenile, and dull to actually be considered good. This is my opinion. Go ask someone who you think is a respectably literate person to read this (an English professor, or even better, a philosophy professor) and see what they think. Im sure they would agree with me. |
#50 [28964] |
| fjwilson.reshall.ucsd.edu |
Man, you are making my day. First off, if you find watching dust low-grade entertainment, you need to either be in a better mood for watching dust, or find some better dust to watch. I, for one, find watching dust high-grade relaxing entertainment.
Did you know the theory of racial memory has been proven as well? But no one ever uses it in the correct way. I also find it interesting that you are using Carl Sagan as a scientific authority. To be sure, he was an excellent astronomer and all around good guy. But, you need to realize that his main skill was introducing scientific comments to lay people.
What am I getting to? The R-complex (as you have used it) is, scientifically speaking, baloney. It cannot take over your emotions. Indeed, it is not even a cause of our emotions. True, there are components in our brain that came from the evolutionary chain of reptiles. These are the basic bits of the brain dealing with hunting, defense, etc. If you looked hard enough, you'd find that fish (from which, if I remember correctly, reptiles are descended from) have the same or similar parts of the brain. To ascribe violence and murder to reptiles is folly. It is a basic fact of life on Earth.
You take the true fact that humans and other simians are wired for compassion the wrong way. Many other animals are wired that way as well. This is one of the reasons I like petting cats, and cats enjoy the same. And simians are not all nice and kind. Watch nature tapes of a bunch of chimpanzees ambushing baboons and eating them or read the studies of the prevalence of rape among orangutans.
I may make no sense to you, but at least I am not trying to make myself look smart without fully undterstanding the concepts involved.
Am I the only person who finds that one Ricky Martin song catchy every now and again? You miss the fact that I measure accomplishment partially on what other people think. I would have found Phoenix Legion: Chronicles an accomplishment whether or not other people enjoyed it.
I don't feel accomplished as either a person or a writer when 50 people comment on PL:C. When 50 people do, and a majority of those comments are positive (so far a given for parts of PL:C), I do feel accomplished as an entertainer. Accomplished as in high-grade (your own level of measurement). Entertainment is entirely arbitrary. And, considering that fact, I think the majority agreement PL:C is good entertainment says something positive.
I am not making a significant contribution to the world of literacy. Your point? I was never trying to do so. As to harming the world of literacy, hardly. I don't see the connection, but from long-term discussion with some people on this site, I can guarantee you plenty are as well-learned as any. Indeed, I find the comment humorous, as many once decried operas and Shakespeare as a blight on the literary world, now considered high culture by many. Perhaps that was the result of such scandalous concepts such as group orgies to be found in Mozart's Die Fliedermous?
Having participated in such operas, as well as dramas such as The Medium (written by some relatively modern Scottish author which I can't remember), I can tell that's great fun. Perhaps things harmful to the literary world in general (such as PL:C and Mozart's operas) are natually fun? Perhaps we should all go back to the days of performing dramas based upon the saga of Oedipus. Yep, the literary world is sure supported by that incestual work.
You don't like my work. Fine. You don't consider it real writing. Now that is odd. 'Real' writing, of which I take you to mean as the tradition of the novel, didn't take flight until the middle of the last millenium. Woe those people who, before the 1400's (excepting maybe a few living in the Hellenic period or Song China), never got to experience real writing.
Now don't get me wrong, I don't consider PL:C standard prose. That's what my other storylines are for. You are welcome to read them. Indeed, I question whether you have read PL:C in its entirety and, consequently, your ability to truly judge the piece.
Not to mention the statement "So therefore I dont like your work and think anyone who takes it a real form of writing is simpleminded" is hypocritical coming from someone who previously said "[in reference to those who simply said 'Fuck off'] You cannot even ACCEPT the possibility someone has a different opinion than yours, and anyone who says anything else lacks any comprehension of writing and literature?"
Feel free to continue and respond. This is great fun. |

Hey Mark4, on the subject of actual military encounters. There was a book written called "Black Halk Down" about the street battle in Somalia. It's fairly well done, and my Father (who was stationed in Somalia, but not in combat) says it does an amazing job of relating the actual conditions. Well researched as well. You might be interested. I forget the author though.
P.S. 50th comment thanks to English Major Student! YES!! |

Respectfully literate person? I consider myself a respectfully literate person.
And I was never judging this piece's artistic merit by the number of comments in response to it. In fact, PL:C was started as more of a writing exercise, though it grew. I judge this as a decent artistic work because 1)The last few lines gave Fractal_Wave the goosebumbs 2)I felt it was, at times, quite well written and I saw meaning a bit of 'depth' to it 3)it's finally developing a bit of controversy. And if our stereotypes about the art world are correct (and I believe they are), controversy is most often a prerequisite to art. |

You can't say Fred is the equivalent to Ricky martin simply because a lot of people like him. A lot of people liked Saving Private Ryan too.... The difference in my opinion is that people I respect like Fred's work...The raters of the site who were selected on the excellence of thier own work. Not that you'd respect thier or my opinion necesarily, especially given your overall opinion of the site as stated in your first comment. Then again, I sort of wonder how you managed to get down into the comments section of one of the reports unless it proved a lot more entertaining to you than you would have us believe...
Probably time for me to go check IPs and see if we are being smurfed =] |

EMS:
today's the first day that i started reading comments on battlereports, and lo and hehold i discover a war of words. i thought i would throw in my two cents on the matter, defending what i consider an excellent piece of entertainment if nothing else.
i found it curious that you deemed such "uninspired, juvenile, and dull" literature worthy of wasting your no doubt valuable time to comment on. if you think that PL:C is not worth the server space it takes up, you should "ACCEPT the possibility someone has a different opinion than yours" and perhaps be more gentlemanly in your expressions.
as for your comment on whether terms such as 'zerg overlord' or 'protoss carrier' are respectable enough to belong in any form of serious fiction: firstly, as praetor believed, PL:C is hardly serious enough to warrant considerations on terminology. secondly, terms like 'big brother,' 'catch-22,' 'general relativity'or 'r-complex' are prima facie no more respectable than 'zerg overlord' or 'protoss carrier.' stating that such a term "would make any writer feel ashamed" is a meaningless generalization, and i hereby express my opinion that such meaningless generalizations, when uttered by a so-called english major student, insult real english majors everywhere. please don't bother answering this; i am merely expressing my opinion, exercising my right to do so under the constitution, and as such must be beneath your oh-so-lofty regard :)
your comment on ad hominem arguments are unjustified. apparantly you do not understand "ad hominem" arguments. for the PL:C enthusiasts to commit ad hominem they must be ATTACKING your arguments BY calling you names, which they did not do. they were merely expressing their opinion that you deserve to be fucked, that you should pull your head out of your anus, etc, without reference to the credibility of your arguments. it is clear that you have not taken logic courses (or if you did, have slept through it).
i do not see why praetor cannot be proud of having 50 positive comments on a piece of work he writes for fun. after all, humans are social animals, and we DO seek the approval of others. the fact that you disdain the opinions of other human beings and discredits the merits of public approval leads me to think that you may be anti-social and bitter. perhaps (correct me if i'm wrong) you have never had approval of your peers, and therefore sought to disregard any opinion your peers might hold to give yourself an illusion of superiority. one might call it a sour-grape attitude, or more simply, jealousy. such a jealous person needs help; i'm sure hardware stores will be glad to sell you ropes so that you can hang yourself.
please enlighten us on the truth and beauty of art. it may be true (or maybe not, let's not get into this) that artistic merit cannot be based on how many people like a certain piece of work. yet you assume without justification that there really is an objective truth or beauty (your words were "greater" not "objective") for the artist to perceive. philosophers have struggles with objectivity vs subjectivity for hundreds of years; you glibly slide over all that in a paragraph.
as for your assertion that if an english or philosophy professor reads PL:C s/he will surely give it the thumbs-down, i disagree. english/philosophy professors should be able to at once see that PL:C is merely a work of entertainment, aimed at a narrow audience, and did not presume to contain or imitate literary genius. the professor might find the work trite, but s/he would understand that s/he is not the target. you, on the other hand, do not understand that distinction and are undeserving of that english major you proclaimed. if you talk to your bursar you might receive a refund on your college education, which i would advise you to re-invest in something more worthwhile, such as a lobotomy. lobotomies may cure your aggression as perceived in your writings. if your college refuses to refund i would recommend a black and decker; for you it makes no difference.
lastly, for praetor: thank you for an excellent piece of ENTERTAINMENT. love your work, read all of it, including those at sclegacy. please carry on writing, and take EMS's comments to be what they are: just so much fart in the wind that need to be fanned away. |

| The one on SCLegacy is much different. First off, the beginning is much cheesier. Second, the other one is in prose format, it doesn't attempt to follow a battle that could, theoretically, take place on b.net. It is also the 'realist' version of the SC universe, with explanations for everything from how ships warp between systems to how a mercenary company works. It follows (more closely) the characters. In short, it is meant to be a true novel, not an action-oriented novella. Descriptions are, in some cases better, and it is a heck of a lot longer. Um, I think that's most of the points. |

First off, that .Praetor guy like, rocks or something. :)
----------
I'm actually curious as to how EMS got here...because as far as I know (and can tell), I've only seen promotions for PL:C over Starcraft sites.
Regardless, EMS suffers from chronic head-up-ass disease. I can say this just as effectively as he says I'f you pre-pubescent, oily faced idiots knew anything about arguing'. Wow, he would have been probably more effective just saying: 'You are a bunch of lamers.'
It's people like that make me say 'Hey...I'm not so bad off after all!'

Anyways, .Praetor, great work on PL:C. I really enjoyed reading it. :) |

EMS, the beauty of any art is in the eye of the beholder, and if you don't like it, that's great. But the fact that you classify all of us here as losers without knowing us shows that you're no better than us, and possibly worse.
Just because someone makes pointless flames like "fuck you," he is an idiot? Yes, it is an incredibly weak argument, but you take that and make so many pointless assumptions about a large community's life out of two words. I don't care what anyone says, but that's just being close-minded and stereotypical of snobs. For all you know, some of these flamers could be some of the most intelligent men on Earth simply messing around because they enjoy it, and if you think that's weakness, then no one's perfect, including you.. (probe don't get too excited though ^^)
As for this site, everyone has their own hobbies and things that make them happy. If praetor getting attention makes him happy, then let him be happy. If people like to come here to be entertained about a game they really enjoy, that makes them no worse than reading classical literature. You don't see me flaming your hobbies, do you?
You can ridicule the story all you want, even though no one here agrees with you and you're just wasting your time, but all your other arguments just show you to be arrogant and close-minded about things you don't care about or understand.

Well, forgive me if I don't immediately grovel in the mud.
As for <i>argumentuum ad hominem</i>, I'll point out that <b>you</b> began the mud-slinging, and I felt justified in pursuing it. "Arrogant wretch", I repeat. Why should it hurt you? Because the truth hurts. |

Please don't misunderstand, EMS. We are open to constructive criticiscm and should you choose to reformulate your previous statements into a more pallatable mush, we would accept them without reprimand.
However, since your first comment you have mixed insults and half-arsed opinions, and dared to call them "arguments"! Forgive me if I claim that you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.
To continue this argument, please post in the Battlereports.com forum. I'm sure you would attract much support to your hypothesis that the entertainment of this site is strictly of inferior quality. |

Dismissing what I say simply by insulting me, and not attacking my argument is argumentuum ad hominem. This is exactly what a few people did, I think perhaps it was someone else who slept through logic class.
Subjectivity vs objectivity? I am not claiming in any fashion or sense to solve this problem, why are you insulting me because I may have mentioned the word objective and not pondered over what dead men have said? To be fair, cowpat, I think you are the person who has tried to make the most sense in attacking me, but still you seem to stumble on your own words. I find your psycho analysis of me a bit amusing.
Mark, when did I say Fred was equivilent to Ricky Martin? I said artistic merit cannot be measured by how many people like it, and I made an analogy to a famous pop singer. Your point being?
Once again, children, since you obviously did not get what I said when I said this was my opinion, I shall repeat it. This is my opinion. It is pointless to argue. You are only hurting yourselfs when you post your messages. I am not attacking your hobbies or life style, I am attacking this obtuse, callow, pitiful attempt at an excuse for a story. And it is also my opinion that people who think fondly of it don't understand the meaning of a good piece of literature. And when did I say good literature had to be in the form of a novel praetor? I was merely suggesting an alternative. It really annoys me when people make up what someone else says, and then argue against that. Reading your comments, I realize that most of the arguments are in that form.
True, Carl Sagan was good at relaying science to the general audience, but don't you dare downplay him as a mere interpretor. He was a man dedicated to the world of science (not only astronomy), who made signifigant contributions to the knowledge we have today.
Catch-22 and Big Brother are terms, first of all, the writer made up. Not only do they have actual application to a concept of underlying literal messages and themes, but were not made for characters in a computer game. Real bad analogy.
How am I close minded omnipresent? I read this and expressed my opinion on it. Is any critique being close-minded? Does everyone have to accept everything? Is that what you're saying? Please reread your comments and at least try to understand exactly how much you are wrong.
The constant relay of pitiful comments and attacks against me only make me more sure that I am right.

Yay! He's back. And having read the entire obtuse, callow, pitiful attempt for a story, what did you REALLY think , EMS =). Specifically did you dislike the present tense format, was the grammar disfunctional, the dialouge dull and mundane, the images half-baked and amorphous relying on only the hope of the reader having an active imagination, or did you just find the attempt to break out of realist prose and into a mixed style of fiction and reporting ill-advised? Or maybe, just maybe, are you simply opposed to a story set in a universe not created by the author, specifically the science fiction universe based on the game StarCraft?
I'm sure a scholar like you, who has read PL:C won't mind pointing out examples of sub-standard writing if the your dislike is not simply based upon the latter prejudice. You strike me as a standard literary reactionary. Once opposed to Shakespeare, once opposed to Opera, once opposed to Broadway musicals, most recently opposed to comics and science fiction 'pulp' literature (not that the opposition to any of these genres do not have their points).
If that's so why not just insult the genre rather than the writing? Because there's an artistic arguement for just about any setting. Perhaps you have read Yevgezny Zamayatin's "We"? (I assume you have, it is THE leading example of Utopian literature.) Now, I could, of course, be wrong in my assumption, and you may simply dislike this particular writing style of mine. I doubt that, because you seem to have the intelligence to back up your opinion with, say, evidence from PL:C. You might be dumb enough not to do so, however.
I quote: "So therefore I dont like your work and think anyone who takes it a real form of writing is simpleminded." I quote from the same person: "I read this and expressed my opinion on it. Is any critique being close-minded? Does everyone have to accept everything?" Anyone who doesn't see this as hypocritical is, "a half-wit".
You, EMS, are one of those few and rare people who are not only highly intelligent and educated, but can only see the world in single, narrow view, and yet consider themselves broad-minded and enlightened.
"The constant relay of pitiful comments and attacks against me only make me more sure that I am right." Why? Because you base the worth of your agruments on other people's reponses?
On last note, on your inability to understand plain English: I never insulted Carl Sagan. While he had his detractors, I am not one of them. I think he did an excellent job as a scientist and a teacher. My comments about his role as an intermediary between the scientific and lay world were to point out that you failed to understand his explanation of a fact of genetic science, which is why I was correcting your mistake. I hope you now understand. If you still need more explanation on the R-complex priciple or the use of case studies in science in general, feel free to ask. |

I never said your criticism was close-minded, and if you had read my post right you'd know that. Since you didn't seem to understand my post, let's scroll up and find some quotes.
"If you anti-socials, who gush at the first thing that seems less immature than your real lives, want to actually read a story about war that can be considered respectable by any intellectual who has a half-wit, I have five words for you: Go read a real book." You automatically assume we are anti-socials, even though I bet almost every single one of the more well-known members of this community is the exact opposite.
"Why do I have to explain everything? Do all poli-sci and history major students have to have everything explained to them?" I'm not exactly sure who you're insulting here, but your major in college has nothing to do with criticism of the story
"If you pre-pubescent, oily faced idiots knew anything about arguing, it would be that this is a difference of opinion, and thus anything said would be meaningless and trite." I understand your argument about opinion, and if you had read my post correctly you'd have seen me agree with you. I said that art is in the eye of the beholder, which basically translates to the same thing. What I'm yelling at is that you're insulting us as people again. You automatically assume that, because we like a computer game, we must all be losers and nerds.
For someone who uses this "argumentuum ad hominem" phrase a lot, you seem to be awful hypocritical about things. You say we are all losers who have no idea how to argue, and then you resort to the same tactics that we use. Sure, you have "logic" in your posts, but the fact that you make fun of what you yourself does is amusing.

And praetor, I was not attacking any argument of yours when I said that statement. I did not dismiss anything you said by insulting you, rather, I simply insulted you. Teach me big words, I know how to use them. What exactly is your point? Any computer literate person realizes that they leave traces as they surf the net. I don't consider the ip address you post from to be private information. In fact, for a long time the ips were openly posted in the comment sections until it became a problem with people's html not coding correctly and messing up the input comment function.
Let's take what EMS says at face value. He offered his opinion, insulted the majority of people who visit this site with his generalizations etc. Sure, his presentation is little better than most of the random flamers we get around here, but his message is the same "I'm better than you because I said so". He isn't offering any real criticism of PL:C, he's making broad insults to the work and the readers of it. Given that his arguements have little substance, I don't really feel any need to continue the debate.
But let me offer my customary challenge: If you don't like it contribute something better. Thanks. |

Actually you dismissed my argument while insulting me. I'd realized you never actually mentioned what part of PL:C you didn't like. In fact, you gave no basis for your dislike of the piece at all besides the use of Zerg Overlord and Protoss Carrier. So if the only problem you have with my writing is its setting, why would you even bother to read 70 pages of a StarCraft fiction anyway?
I may at times mistake your arguments (you could do with clearer writing), but you never even acknowledge mine. I take that as a sign you cannot answer them. The vast majority of your repsonses concern only a few of the points I make in my posts. |

Since we would be merely expressing our humblest opinions, surely such a logical and acception person as EMS would not object, as him/her/it self had repeatedly stressed the incontrovertibility of such opinions.

LOL! This is without doubt, one of the most entertaining flame wars I have read in a long time. On the one hand, we have EMS, a condescending jerk, who has managed to simultaneously insult and dismiss the author of the story, and its readers. On the other hand, a bunch of people (including me) who are justly offended by his remarks.
However, throughout, EMS has completely failed to justify his position: why is this work bad? And does it need to be literature? As a bit of background, I am both older (sigh) and better read (I imagine) than many people here. This is not a boast, mind you, I just wasted my youth in this way instead of others. So, EMS, if you want to take me on on the basis of my literary credentials, bring it on you bad boy.
Having said that, I think I understand a distinction between "literature" and "entertainment". Literature would presumably have artistic merit that would somehow elevate it beyond the time and place of its origin. It would also (presumably) deal with themes, imagery, conflicts, or ideas, that are central to life, to what it is to be human. Entertainment may or may not broach such subjects, but serves primarily to titillate. (At least I am guessing these would be the presuppositions of our resident genius EMS.)
So, what exactly about the work in question (PL:C) fails to meet the test of entertainment? Or is it just not entertaining to you, EMS, and therefore axiomatically worthless? (Or, do you presume that if you do not find something entertaining, but that others do, that the work must be mindless drivel and that those who appreciate it uneducated, unwashed, peons?) Similarly: because something is not literature (art), can it not be appreciated by those who also appreciate literature and art? (I would hope it would not be too much of a shock to one of your towering intellect that I would place myself in this category.)
Finally, what about this piece fails to meet the test of literature? Prima facie, this work contains many of the elements that often exist in art and literature that has stood the test of time: human struggle, of the meaning of death, of war. So, EMS, how about some substantive reasoning to illuminate your position? How about something deeper than: "Because I said so." to explicate your position?

Apparation, we established earlier that entertainment was arbitrary. I am not saying this is not entertainment (although to me, even it was to be considered that, it would be considered possibly one of the lowest forms). I was attacking the literary value, which you seem to understand. And some of you have at least picked up I have not dissected this story and given real reasons why it is odious. And also I am adjuticating on the people who seem to venerate it.
Instead of going through the process of anamotizing all the reasons why I dont like the story, let me make a simple analogy. Say I was up late at night and watching tv. Low and behold, I cant find anything to watch. I am flipping through the channels and stumble upon the sci-fi channel where they have a made-for-tv movie, which as any imbecilic person would know they are not of the highest caliber. For entertainment reasons, I stop and let it run on my cathode ray tube (I know modern tv's dont use cathode rays, but its an expression, dont try to argue against that). All I see are cheesy plotlines and devices for moving the story, puerile directiing, melodramatic and inappropriate acting, special effects that would make George Lucas cry, and predictability galore. It is an utter waste of time for me to rot in front of this pathetic endeavor at a movie. But guess what? Even the lowest forms of entertainment have their followers. You can sink as far as you want, but someone will still like it. Does this make it clairvoyent for everyone?
Cowpat, there is a difference between giving an opinion on a story and slander. I suggest you stop yourself from posting anything more so you stop so stupid. That goes for you too William.
Praetor, I did in fact insult you, but I attacked, nay, defeated your arguments first. Ive never said I was better than any of you, but from reading most of the comments, I am begining to think I am. |

Who gave you the omniscient knowledge to decide that your arguments have defeated all of ours? Seeing as how you have convinced us only of your arrogant hypocritical stupidity, it would take a third party to actually decide who is right here.
All you are is a moron trying to flaunt your "education." Even though you've danced around the heart of the matter for so long without actually explaining why you don't like the story, but your pitiful analogy simply shows your arrogance further. You gave no concrete evidence as to the poorness of the story. I used to think that you were just a hypocrite who is just as bad as the rest of us, but now I see that you're worse than the worst of flamers that just use phrases like "fuck you." Unlike those morons, someone actually bothered giving your wretched mind some extra knowledge so that you can pretend you're something more.

EMS, I don't see what's antisocial about reading someone's writing on the internet and posting comments about it. You're the one with antisocial tendencies, because you act arrogant and make people hate you. I feel sorry for people like you because you don't know how to get along with others. If legion chronicles aren't your thing then don't read them... I hate Ricky Martin, so I don't buy his CDs. How's that for logic? I'm not even a university student...
Anyway, my advice for you, EMS, is to concentrate on making friends. Start small.. feed your starving cat, water your dying cactus... whatever, just be nice, and as people start to think of you as pleasant, they'll take you out to social gatherings, and you'll never have to go to Battlereports.com and be petty again....
PS: "Does this make it clairvoyent for everyone?"
First off, you spelled clairvoyant wrong. Also, you used the word <b> completely</b> incorrectly. Apparently your thesaurus didn't serve you so well this time. Perhaps you sought the word 'clear'? Anyway, I don't have enough time to waste compiling all your grammatical errors. There's a book that might help: The Elements of Style. It's a good reference for high-level english usage, so maybe you should get other books too, like 'Apostrophes Can Be Fun!' (you really should use them), or 'Commas Aren't Periods, Dumbass' (you have a whole lotta run-on sentences in your lofty prose).
Oh, and more about logic...
"What did YOU read?" said the second-grader to the kindergarten kid.
Appeals to Authority are among the worst logical fallacies. Just because Albert Einstein, Carl Sagan, James S. Prescott, and english and philosophy proffessors are intelligent, doesn't mean you can use them as crutches to support your shortcomings. Keep on trying! Thanks for the <b>ENTERTAINMENT</b>.
oh, one more thing.. because you made the metaphor (which you mistermed as an analogy) between Ricky Martin and Praetor, you did imply that the two are equivalents, considering the purpose of a metaphor, which is to show the equivalence between two things.
Anyway, don't argue if you can't write clearly (or 'clairvoyently'), as it weakens the force of your arguement. Yeah.. I would write more about your mistakes, but I've already spent all of two seconds finding these, and it's no longer funny... just sad. |

Oh, and EMS, could you please write something to show us all what defines great literature and art? It doesn't have to be Starcraft-related, of course. I'm sure the site's admins wouldn't mind if you posted an edifying tale that satisfies both the realms of entertainment and literature. Or, maybe you aren't the writer type, and your skill lies in critiquing other people's work. If this is the case, then please tell us why Praetor's work is bad with specific reference to the actual writing, rather than attacking the writer and the audience personally.
Oh, and you lost the battle, nay, the war. |

Instead of going through the process of reasoning, he makes an analogy. Does this make sense to anyone? I guess I was wrong about English majors wanting to be writers. Perhaps they all want to be politicians.
Let me make an analogy. A man walks into a theatre, catching the end of a opera. In the end of this opera, a fat lady with a hat made of cow horns is singing. This man yells "Oh my God, I can't believe this. Fat Vikings are SO passe. I can't believe all you people would listen to this drivel!" The man walks out of the theatre, and proceeds to spend the entire night accosting patrons, explaining to them that Vikings are boring, and indeed, beneath an intelligent human's contempt.
Of course, this opera took place in Trondheim.
The patrons walk away confused as to the man's motives, but laughing inwardly at his intelligence and pitying someone who can only feel better when others think he is wrong.

Hi everyone... 98th owns you all.
I would like to make the stunning statement that I have not read 1 single word of the PLC chronicles. However, this is the most entertaining debate/flame war that I have read since I stopped visiting the Civilization II discussion forums when I converted to Starcraft.
I must say that this was a very enjoyable debate. I use the word <b>was</b> because it is all over. EMS has lost. He has refused to clarify any of his points and has resorted to name calling and using the Theraurus in Microsoft Word to replace normal everyday words with the biggest words he can find even though they are completely out of context.
Anyway, this thread was more entertaining than most of the battle reports on the front page... :-) Thanks guys, all of you involved get a big fat <b>10</b> from me.
Cheers,
Dref
P.S. Praetor, I will now copy and paste all 12 parts of PLC into one big long word document. I am by no means a literary genius, but I do appreciate a good piece of pulp / sci-fi entertainment story or whatever the hell you wanna call it... :-) |

EMS:
what's the difference between expressing an opinion on a story and an opinion on a person? are they not both opinions? and as you yourself have pointed out, aren't opinions somehow 'beyond reproach'? therefore when i express my opinions of you, and you consider it 'slander', isn't it (again) just a matter of differing opinions (one person's slander is another's opinion)? and therefore when you choose to argue that my 'opinions' are somehow "stupid" aren't you contradicting your earlier statement ("it is pointless to argue [against an opinion]")? and therefore aren't you slapping yourself in the face? it may comfort you to know that i, for one, will be glad to lend a hand in this regard, and i am sure many others here would also volunteer.
so please, next time, just open your mouth and we'll be glad to slap you.

EMS, I got a few words for u. If you dun like Praetor's PL:C, go SUKADIK! I'm sorry, but your geniune element of yours in insulting many people unjustifibly had generated a cyclic group of which your silliness had expanded to a group of unending powers of your retardedness. You may stand by your opinion, but your 'actions' against others are as high as the 13th Cello of the Opera #435. You may be jealous because you could not get pass the anal stage which Freud would catagorize you, simply because you cannot withstand other's appreciation of another's excellent work as if it is penetrating your 'self'. Try to understand words between lines of many, for which you'll need to understand the natural language accepted by a Turing machine.

True Drefsab, it does only come to about 50 pages on MS Word. HOWEVER, if you take the average number of words on a standard novel page, and the average number of words on an MS Word page, the ratio is about 1.5/1.
I've been using that little-known fact to inflate my page-numbers for QUITE some time now =). To my embarassment, I did at one point say 90 pages, I no longer remember now. But I there is a passable argument for 75 pages. |

Yeah, I guess the argument is over.. EMS boy stopped posting a little while ago. He was definetly over once the thesaurus scandal was exposed. I mean, clairvoyant in place of clear? "I hope this makes it perceivable in the future or beyond normal sensual contact for everyone." Yeah, that makes no sense. What a clown. What a sad, sad clown.
But hey, something I thought of... is the EMS the same guy who posted that thing about how all the battle reports here suck? Check the IPs, I'm curious. Or, as EMS, god of english usage would say, "Im curious." And then he'd add end it with a comma instead of a period, like this, |

Geez. One of these days when i have lots of time, I'll actually read all of these posts.
English Major Student: What do you read?
And, for the record, there are
a million and one examples of this "Fan Ficton" (I will not use the term "fanfic", as that's slang, and you might not recognize it.) out on the internet. I advise you spend sometime flaming the sites that post works by 11 year old girl who dream about going on tour with the Backstreet Boys. Perhaps you'll find someone of your own maturity level.
Note here that I say maturity, not intelligence. Some of the things you and Praetor discussed went right over my head, and I am far more intelligent than most.
HOWEVER. To enter a community and being attacking it is as immature as you claim we are. Frankly, who cares if there are stupid, shallow people out there? I deal with them everyday. Peopel who run BSB webpages. People who read "YM". People who eat at Mcdonalds, People who think MDMA and Crstal Meth are the same. Deal with it. Be nice to them. We're smarter than them. We gotta take care of 'em.
Certainly, many of your points are correct. There are many immature 14 year olds with acne in our community. There are many intelligent, mature, reasonable people in our community. If Fred Wilson, AKA Praetor has not proven this, I don't know who can.
(oops. used an abbriviation or two there. sorry)
To quote:
"If you anti-socials, who gush at the first thing that seems less immature than your real lives, want to actually read a story about war that can be considered respectable by any intellectual who has a half-wit, I have five words for you: Go read a real book"
Maturity is defined as the ability to be immature at the proper moments. If you disagree with me on that, then there's no hope for you. Certainly this site & Praetor's work posted here is immature. SO WHAT?
Speaking personally here: "Go read a real book"

Another good bit (after actually reading more of this "conversation") is that so far, Prae is being FAR more mature, & generally far nicer than EMS is.
EMS: an insult is an insult, whether it's comparing Prae's work to Ricky Martin, or saying "fuck you!"
playing w/ words doesn't change the intent. Or comment on the intelligence of the writer.
Here, watch.
"hey,ems FUCK YOU"

"excuse me, mr. EMS? You sir, are a sad example of american intelligentsia, a doddering relic of the steam age, who does not belive in the new order of things, or of entertainment. I must say this report brought mixed feelings. I for one enjoyed PL:C and the thought of never seeing another new chapter again does depress me. So I'd like to give a final, hearty congratulations to Praetor for an enjoyable story.
To EMS, get over yourself. As a Philosophy major(See how I worked that in w/o using it as my name, try it sometime) I enjoy a good argument now and again, but this has been an extremely one-sided affair, albeit a humorous one.
Your speak from both sides of your mouth, on one side saying that this is a matter of opinion and that you can't attack an argument based on opinion; while from the other side you say anyone who supports this story are simple-minded children.
Personally I find your vocabulary the most unsettling thing of all. You have used words such as "odious", "adjuticating", and "anamotizing"; and have used many of them incorrectly, and where much simpler words would have sufficed. In my experience, people use big words to make themselves appear smarter than they really are.
That combined with your use of "English Major Student" as a name leads me to believe that you are trying to cover up deep-seated feelings of inadequacy by attempting to make youself seem better than everyone else.
Of course with a flame war this long there a numerous entertaining quotes that can be drawn from it. I would have to say that my favorite came from cowpat -- "they were merely expressing their opinion that you deserve to be fucked, that you should pull your head out of your anus, etc"
That was hilarious.

This may not make sense, but I'll try it anyway:
EMS is the reason I dislike IRC.
There. All EMS was trying to do was argue. He was enjoying himself immensely by saying things like (in paraphrased format because I'm too damned lazy to bother scrolling up) "My opinion is better than yours in my opinion" and "I'm right because I think I am" are just plain typical of the braindead numbness that I see every time I log onto an IRC server.
Why really bother? Replying to someone like EMS is simply going to make him write another flame which fixates upon some arb point that he can use to lob large words at someone simply to make himself feel superior.
Fractal_Wave: Lord of the rings rocks, I've read that trilogy about 6 times now. If you enjoy Tolkien's style of writing, you should like Fiest (who is a bit faster) or Pratchett, the god of humour and human insight writing ;)
And that, BTW is my opinion. HOWEVER! I have managed to teach myself to adjust my opinions occasionally, so give me other good books and I'll go read em...
In conclusion, I'd like to quote a short skit by John Cleese, yet another person with amazing human insight:
Voice 1: "I am upperclass. I am better than him, and I'm much better than HIM."
Voice 2:"I am middleclass. I look up to him, but I look down on HIM because he is lowerclass."
Voice 3:"I know my place..."
1: "I can look down on THEM because I have breeding and social standing."
2: "I look down on HIM because I have more money than him, but I can't look up to him because I'm merely a vulgar upstart."
3: "I know my place..."
1: "I get a feeling of superiority because I know I'm better than THEM."
2: "I get a feeling of content because I know I'm moving up in the world. I'm better than HIM, but I look up to him."
3: "I get a pain in the neck..."

Wow! I haven't been able to read any reports for a few days.
Here I am, logging onto the site, excited to see a .Praetor report. Hey great! .Praetor finally is getting alot of comments! His wordy, well written reports usually get a few dozen at best, because they are alot to chew on for people just wanting a quick battlereport... and they aren't "real reports" by some definitions.
I sure am disappointed that it wasn't the acclaim I had hoped to see.
Except that Mark4 searched the IP, I might think that .Praetor was generating the EMS comments himself for fun and contraversy. What is .Praetor's IP anyway?
My other thought is that English Major Student goes to school with Fred Wilson and doesn't like him.
I can't say I care enough about English majors flexing their mental muscles in a "who can write the most wordy comment" contest.
Here's my take, if I don't enjoy it, I won't read it. I've read over 1,000 books in the last 10 years (I am 26). Only some of those books were Dr.Seuss! The others were Tolkien, Asimov, Eddings, Zahn, Salvatore, Brooks, Jordan, Rice, etc...
Anyway, I don't think .Praetor is as enjoyable to read as Timothy Zahn, but good ol' Mr. Wilson puts together a damn good tale.
.Praetor, if you set this up, and I am responding to a hoax of your making, I'm going to hunt you down and smack ya around a bit. If this is real, let me end with a hearty, "Bite me" to English Major Student. 'nuff said |

What an interesting comments section. EMS flames are pretty ridiculous. Mainly because of the fact that Praetor is writing FAN FICTION not an assignment for some creative writing class. The people that visit this site enjoy reading his work, and I think that's probably Praetor's main motivation for writing it.
You shouldn't try and evaluate it beyond that. I have known a lot of people like EMS. Especially back in college. Basically they and impress everyone by using as many big words and complex arguments as they can. It's beyond them to simply express a basic thought such as... "This story sucked. Writing fiction about a computer game is stupid." Instead of simply saying that they have to create a gigantic argument to impress everyone with their immense knowledge.
You took some propositional logic classes and now you think your arguments are godly. Sheeeeit. I took critical thinking and propositional logic in college as well. I understand your ad hominem crap.. although bringing it up is pretty pointless. Because there is really nothing to argue about.
Mark4 put it best. People read stuff on this site for entertainment, not to become the next Thoreau.
Except my reports of course. The report I wrote on Pirates! is an instant classic, right up their with Moby Dick and the Great Gatsby. |

Wow, I actually read through most of the comments, EMS has certainly sparked a lot of debate. I had some very rather unkind words to say, but I'll keep them to myself because I see no need to prolong the EMS-vs-the-rest-of-battlereports.com debate here :-).
I WILL say this, though, Praetor:
In college, I took some of the most advanced writing classes that MIT had to offer. Granted, we're not exactly a literary school, but I was fortunate enough to have some really stellar fiction professors who were concurrently teaching in the local area (read: Harvard). My science fiction prof was a, umm, "badass" -- I don't remember his name :-(, but he wrote several scripts for Star Trek. In fact, it was quite intimidating once when I told him that I was intending to write something based on the "Dionysus Sphere" episode of Star Trek:TNG, and he replied that he wrote that episode :-b. I guess if you do your web research, you can now figure out the author's name (I'm too lazy myself to do so).
I've also won awards starting in high school for my fictional writing. In college, I almost published one a work of humor that I wrote for a short stories class.
However, compared to Praetor's work, I really feel very small and even very envious. If I took your work to my Harvard science fiction prof, I'm sure he would really enjoy reading it. At least, he enjoyed most of my work, and I consider my writing skills to be far beneath yours.

<I>If you pre-pubescent, oily faced idiots knew anything about arguing, it would be that this is a difference of opinion, and thus anything said would be meaningless and trite. I guess I was right with my pre-formed prejudices all along.</I>

I had been lazy to reply due to illness, not because I thought I lost (what did I lose to anyway?).
So sorry for the few grammatical errors, I am only human. It's not like all of you are perfect in your thought processes or punctuation either. "To enter a community and being attacking it is," and such, but I would rather not find every little error.
First off, to defend myself against these so called "logic students," I believe to fix some things up. When did I make a fallacy from arguing from authority? I never said, "Mammals are not violent because Carl Sagan said so," or used Einstein or Prescott to say I was right, I was either making an analogy or suggesting some alternative reading. My point when I mentioned Carl Sagan was still the same; at the first hint of aggression or when someone challenges the view you hold about yourselves, you responded with bitter anger and violence. It's what most unintelligent people do when they are cornered. This was shown by many earlier comments, and some recent ones.
I find it so funny. If you really could dismiss me as a mere flamer, then why do you have all this emotion involved in your responses? My God, people are threatening bodily harm to someone they don't know, and I'm supposed to believe I'm the one who is stupid? If you really thought nothing of me, then no one would have responded or defended praetor. But no, there was a voice in your head that made you get angry. It is apparent I struck an emotional chord, and over what, a story written about a fictitious computer game? The more people I see making messages that are trying to insult me, the more I know how many weak and stupid people there are in the world.
People keep saying I lost, I lost to what? Nothing has been proven why I would be considered wrong and can be, mainly because most of you still don't realize it was an opinion. You say because I haven't justified why I don't like the story is why I "lost"? Why would I want to justify the reasons why something is utter garbage to people I obviously don't respect? And this is a posting board, not a critic's site. You say I lost because I don't realize that this is Fan Fiction? If that is the case, well then, draw your own conclusions. And since most you are not able to, I will do it for you: if this is Fan Fiction, then Fan Fiction is the biggest waste of human effort known to man.
When I read all these comments, I have to admit, my stomach was hurting from the laughter. Some of you are so off in what you think to be intellectual, and you will probably never know how wrong you are unless I could talk to you. There is nothing I can say to make myself seem right to you, so this will be my last comment, hopefully. I bet there will be people who applaud it, and seeing that they applaud will make me realize that they care that I am gone. And if I know that they care, I know have gotten to them, although this was not my intended purpose of posting the message in the first place.

To EMS-
Most of us think you are an idiot because you claim to hate Praetors story without giving any real reasons why. You also claim that we are stupid because we liked it. I could just as easily claim that you are an idiot if you liked War and Peace while I was to bored to get past the first three pages.
You came to this site, which you claim is a stupid thing to have a site about and mock our entertainment because it is not "literature." Well, neither are the comics considered "Literature," but I'll be damned if you can get me to stop enjoying them. |

You, EMS, think there is strong emotion in our comments, EMS? One of the problems with today's society is the dilution of meaning from words once held even taboo. (What I'm telling you is when some say 'fuck off', they really don't have all tha much emotion in it. More of a knee-jerk responce to some jerk who deserves to have a knee shaken at.
News for you, you are simply a flamer. Flaming people does not merely entail a few obscenities. You are in fact, a slightly skilled flamer. Not quite up there with 'yavoon, but not at the bottom of the barrel either. In fact, flaming is simply professing an opinion in a hostile manner, which you have done quite prolifically (though not all together proficiently).
When you say Fan Fiction is the biggest waste of human effort known to man, you automatically compromise your position. That cannot, frankly, be so unless you believe there is a goal human effort is meant to go towards. What, pray tell, would you have us believe that goal is?
I still find it funny you are so dedicated at attacking this piece when you haven't even read it. Perhaps once you have done that, you can become more than a human conduit for the complaint server.
Understand this:
We reply (on the whole) not because we are angry, not because we are indignant. We reply not because we hate you, or wish you to go away. We reply not because you challenge our sense of security, if that were the case we would not respond at all, but rather try to ignore the non-existant hurt. We reply not because we have anything better to do. We reply because it is fun, another form of entertainment.
You, EMS, are our toy. |

Uh oh, I liked this story. I guess Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech won't let me attend school at their campus, even though I enjoyed a simple story that is leading to the downfall of mankind.
Seriously though, can't you be a little bit more positive with your criticism? Obviously this isn't going to win any awards, but you don't have to shut down the whole story without just stating that it's absolutely moronic and a waste of time. Why not something more constructive?
Here's an example:
I found Spike's death at the end a predictable plot element where the audience is supposed to lose a major character. It seemed forced and expected.
See? A simple example of what you do or don't like. It can't be that hard to provide. You seem to have an almost irrational hatred towards the story, if you go so far as to call it the biggest waste of human effort by man.
If you think this is the greatest folly of mankind, then I'd love to hear your opinion on wrestling. |

Damn, he didn't respond particulary to me. What a bitch. Hey, he quoted me though!
"To enter a community and being attacking it is"
Damn do I feel famous.
And Praetor summed it up again.
"You, EMS, are our toy"
But, I feel the need to comment on one incredible line..
"My point when I mentioned Carl Sagan was still the same; at the first hint of aggression or when someone challenges the view you hold about yourselves, you responded with bitter anger and violence"
Especially, the "respond with bitter anger and violence"
In your very first post..
"If you anti-socials, who gush at the first thing that seems less immature than your real lives..."
Bitter anger and violence? Certainly, some of the replys have been. "Fuck off", for instance.
However, Praetor has been infintely more gentlemanly & mature than you have. You're biting yourself in the ass. (I saw a double-jointed man do that once. Was really amazing.)
What continues to amaze me, is why you care? If we're such low lifeforms, why should you give a damn about what we do? If you're trying to take a stand against human stupidity, find a REAL cause to spend your time on. Save the whales, plant a tree, do something REAL with your time.
And, last bit of advice, live and let live. There are always going to be stupid people on earth. I'm not one of them. You appear to be blessed with intelligence, but are also rather arrogant about it. I do my best to laugh behind my hand, and let all the stupid, shallow fools go about their business, unless their mis-information somehow affects me.
You're just shallow, pure & simple. SenorPompeii has it right on the money. If Prae's work sucks, tell hime how to improve it!
All the best,

I find it hard to accept the fact that not only is there a person dedicated to criticizing reports about a game, but there would be someone who got the impetus to make up an argument about a fictional piece of literature. Not only is this a pathetic attempt to portray the so desired "intellectual sense" of an English major by the name of "English Major Student," but it also says a lot about the person who thinks he is actually accmplishing anything. Not only is his argument riddled with such embarrassing words and phrases that would make any writer feel ashamed, like "opionion" and "pre-pubescent, oily faced idiots," but the delivery fails to inspire even the smallest shred of respectability. If this anti-social, who leaps at the chance to detract from the quality of the first thing that seems less immature than your real lives, want to actually read an argument that can be considered respectable by any intellectual who has a half-wit, I have five words for you: Go read a real book.

| I just had another thought, EMS claims that it is dumb to write a piece of fiction based on a piece of fiction. However, some good literature has been written like this. The assorted stories of King Arthur and the Knighs of the Roundtable were written by several different people, who were basing their stories on previous king arthur stories. Seeing as how the only objection you gave to the story was that it was based on fiction, you must not like king arthur much either? |

ducky, it's "you're "
contraction of the words "you" and "are"
the way you said that sentance, it means "Spine, did you know you have possession of an idiot?"
"your" means having possession of.
examples:
"you need to take your medicine" <b><-- it IS duckys medicine</b>
"go to your corner now, ducky" <b><-- it is duckys normal corner he sits in </b>
examples of "you're "
"you're a fucking psycopath, ducky, you need serious help" <b><-- 'you are a fucking psycopath' yes thats probobly true</b>
"you're a 26 year old man with mental problems, aren't you, ducky?"<b> <-- 'you are a 26 year old man...' word is out. run. </b>
when NOT to use the word "you're" :
"is that you'res?" <b><-- (just typing you'res is such a fuck up, you should notice)</b>
"go get you're pink slip" <b><--(go get you are pink slip? hah)</b>
when not to use the word "your" :
"your gay" <b><-- the most incorrectly stated sentence in online existance, this acutally means "you have ownership of the gayness" and actually, "gay" is descriptive, whereas "gayness" can be something. whens the last time you had possesion of something descriptive?</b>
"your a lonely man with a smelly house" <b><-- this means that you have ownership of "a". does it get any uglier?</b>
please do not get them mixed up, it is such a "chobo" thing to do, as you might say.

Is this flame war over? It was so much fun =(
Hey .Praetor. 163 comments!!
Just to voice my opinion:
EMS, I have read this entire story (something you have not yet confirmed), and I must agree it is no work of art. I can walk into any given book store, and surely find hundreds of books that would humble this story. You are correct in suggesting that it is, all in all, not something entirely worth reading unless you have interest in the subject (StarCraft).
I, and most of the people who visit this site, do. Thus, I must say I find your claims that only oily-faced anti-socials (not a direct quote, I know, but I extrapolated) would like this work entirely false. I can't speak for others, but I am not an oily-faced anti-social. I know I can't prove it, but to claim that <b>I am</b> would be an act of undeniable arrogance on your part.
So, all in all, check your arguements. You seem to be using your subjective opinion as a platform to insult others (which, I'm afraid, you started doing in your first post), under the false belief that we give a damn.
Good day.

Hmmm, one brief question EMS: is this "low" entertainment by virtue of the fact that it is science fiction, or is it "low" entertainment by virtue of its mediocre (by your estimation) execution? Your analogy was a little weak in that it is open to either (or both) interpretations.
Now, if it was the former, I think you have a great ways to go to justify your argument. You would seem to be saying that science fiction cannot attain the status of literature. Well, as Shockwave pointed out, Haldeman's work is notable, and (in my estimation) literary. Now, the great mass of the genre may not be, but some SF does stand out as achieving literary, artistic status: Gene Wolfe's stuff, Dan Simmons', CS Lewis', Benford's, etc. If you want me to go into specific titles, I can. The point being that there has been some very good "literature" to come from the field (a small amount, but some).
If your point was simply mediocre execution, then I think you need to substantiate your claim better. The execution appears to be better than a lot of stuff which actually gets published (in any genre!) and I would imagine that it is not a stretch to say that it could be published after professional editing.
Finally: "low" entertainment. What exactly makes something "low" entertainment? If it is not Shakespeare, or Wagner, must it be "low"? I am genuinely curious. I think you will find the definition is a whole lot more slippery than you think. My suspicion is that even if you could list a set of characteristics typical of "low" entertainment, it would not preclude a work that included those elements from attaining artistic status. Hell, even Oscar Wilde could be paraphrased as saying "the perfect use of an imperfect medium is a beautiful thing."

since we're confessing majors, i might as well own up ;)
i miss EMS, without him i have no more reason to finely craft insults and no one to hurl them at once crafted. his heterofore meaningless life temporarily attained meaning when he became the object of insult and entertainment for countless people. i fear for not merely his life but indeed his existence, for his/hers/its life will again become the obscure and meaningless blob is essentially is, once the flame wars end.
is it true johnny, mark and whoop created EMS? then why kill him? have him post elsewhere, better yet, post a comment opposing some well-known strategy and see what kind of FLAME WARS will ensue!
i, for one, will miss him. his very existence uplifts me. whenever i feel down, inadequate or stupid, all i have to do is to think of EMS and i will feel better, for i know no matter how low i sink, EMS is lower.

.Praetor-
What can I say...far and away the best Starcraft fiction I've read period. I just finished reading the entire series from beginning to end in one sitting...I couldn't help myself it was addicting. The pacing was excellent and the character development was solid for a piece of short fiction, which is particularly impressive considering the fact that you wrote this over the course of months in installments. I've read and enjoyed your other Stracraft stuff (over at SClegacy) but this has easily been my favorite story. Most battle type stories fail to portray any sort of real emotion...or over do it. The somber, weary tone, particularly in the last few episodes was perfect, and the "You bastard" was a nice touch, I was really impressed that you didn't over do it and just kept with a simple yes.
I'm starting to feel as though I'm gushing a bit, but you've put together a solid piece of work. Your battle descriptions are vivid but restrained, your characterization was well done with actual character development that didn't seem forced or trite. Hell...this is just flat out solid, solid work. Thanks for all the effort you put into this. Almost humorous how a simple computer game can create an entire community, but it's people like yourself and YRM and the upkeepers of this site that make it possible...and that make it enjoyable. |

First off: I must apologize for jmkoh84. I made the mistake of pointing this site out to him in the hope that he'd read it and formulate some opinion. I was wrong.
The issue at hand: EMS
It's simple, the English student wants to feel superior in the sense that he is NOT like the other "no-life losers". That is, he writes about what other people wants and stuff like that. But in reality, he is the same as the "no-life losers" as water is to clouds. His desperate need for attention shows this rather well. I honestly don't like the type of people that writes "flowery". In my opinion, when I write, I want to allow the others to understand me. An example would be the R-complex, which has absolutely nothing to do with the subject, but rather just there to show that he knows it; proving his intellectual superiority. If he were with a group of English students, then such usage of language could be comprehended. However, since he clearly made it evident that he's writing to a bunch of "no-life profanity users", he knows that they won't be able to comprehend them; thus only using them to flaunt his knowledge. There's nothing abnormal about that. It can best be told with an old Chinese saying:
There's an old Chinese saying of "playing music to the ox" (sounds much better in Chinese of course). It appears to be an insult to the listener(s); a simile comparing them to the "ox". The ox cannot comprehend the deep and profound meanings of music. Yet think about it... Who is the more idiotic party, the musician or the ox? If the musician knows that the ox cannot understand music, then why is he playing and wasting his time? Does he expect the ox to have any respect for him? Truth is music probably sound horrible to the ox. Therefore the musician is the idiot that wastes his time over "nothingness", and he's the true "no-life" person.
You know what I mean? =)
Another issue to which I shall not go into depth with because of its somewhat off topic nature but -Carl Segan? To use him as a resource is, frankly speaking, stupid. Carl Segan is bunk. Now we could go on for 50 pages on that issue alone- but this doesn’t seam like the place for it. He sort of falls in the same category of Mormonism. Its illogical, and poorly though out.
I could comment on each and every comment EMS has made; but I feel as though it wouldn't be even slightly considered by EMS himself. It's like telling a crazy person that he is crazy. They'll never believe you; no matter how hard you work at proving it. So I feel as though there is no point. That combined with the fact that EMS hasn’t responded to anyone's remarks in such a long time that it all seams like a mute point; whereas I’m beating a dead cow. I am unfortunately a late-comer to what seams to have been a rather... fun debate.
Praetor - to you: Do what you want to do. Don't let anyone pull you down. Though I may not read your work; there is most definitely NOTHING wrong with entertaining other people. It is rather a quite noble job. I appreciate people like you, who at least try, whereas people like EMS just criticize and put down that which THEY do not find of value. I can only pray that his narrow view shall one day be broadened.
Just though I’d throw my 2 cents in :)

***start of some trashtalk"
This was very funny. Due to the fact that I am slow, swede and not exacly what you would call a common visitor to this site(plan to change that :) my comment is, well... rather late. But I still want to offer my comments((wow impressive) self praise because I know thats the only way I will get some, just like when it comes to sex :/.). Anyway as I said I am swede and I am not that good at english, not as good as EMS and Praetor atleast. If this "EMS-War" had been in swedish I might have been able to put up an challenge in the use of cool words.
Finally I get to the point :) (well soon at least) I am swede so please pity me. not beacuase I am bigger more beatiful and more intelligent than you all. but because I lack the ability to really make my point.
I will try to make this understandable :) .
***end trashtalk***
I start with some cheers for Praetors ability to make my time I spent reading the PL:C really enjoyable.
And then I like to congratulate EMS for doing the same in the comment section, I didn´t understand all your fancy words but I think I got the picture quite right.
And I must say that all your statements are correct. Yes everyone you heard me, he is the winner. Why you may ask? but it is really simple. as he said you can´t argue with an opinion because what you think about something is right always until you change you mind. But at the same time, you complain about all the FUs against you and say that noone is trying to argue. Just flaming you, for me it just turned out that you was as bad as the rest in that way. As someone pointed out, just because you tell someone he is an idiot in a better language an by the use of more words than him don´t make your opinion more true or make you a better person.
Then the fact that everyone else including me fell in the trap and just had to answer against him makes us the losers in this flame war, well as everyone else I have nothing better to do(well sleep but why sleep when you can post a flame :)
congratulations EMS you made everyones day.
I hate you all because you are better at english than me :(. But that can be because english is your main language, but after looking at far to many Ricky Lake and Jenny Jones shows. I doubt it :).
And I love you because I just wasted more than 6 hours straight for just reading the entire novel and the comments, and I enjoyed every second of it :).
Praetor keep up the good work. And I must say about the story not being able to fit in the books hall of fame, might be true. but I still have read far worse stories than this one. I read better to. but every story that trigger an emotion - that makes you read it until it ends - is a good story.
/Jacos
Yes I use to many smilies I know
and my small post just drag on, just like my BRs and how much I try I still wait for the glimmering light to illuminate my writing as it cleary has done to Praetor and some other people who I won´t mention here since this is Praetors space :).
Everyone got the right to an opinion, it is only the true intelligent ones that can make themself NOT forcing it on everyone else. Probably some qoute of someone I can´t remeber. I am not clever enough to make it up on my own... |

| I think all of you missed the point entirely. I was referred to this site by a friend who knows EMS. I'm not going to pretend to be great at english or know much, frankly, i despise harsh grammar(see? there's an uncapitalized "I" in this sentence). EMS posted this because he felt that the story was dumb and that someone would actually waste time writing a story about another fictional story. That's his opinion. Who cares though? If that's what gets you off, so be it. He wrote that stuff to piss you people off. Every angry response, every post that attacked his "opinions" racked up another point for him even though you didn't know it. He sat back the whole time laughing at everyone because he could manipulate you so easily. This whole thing was just a game. Congrats folks, EMS won. |

Assuming the artist formerly known as English Major Student thought that it would be fun to attack a work that took a helluva a lot of time and effort to write, and then sit back and laugh at people who argued with him, I think we win, because we're not that mean.
Or, in simpler terms, is baiting people cool? Answer:: Nope.
I'm a 17 year-old who has been accused of writing like a 35 year old. My lowest mark in Grade 12 was a 73%. In Calculus. The kind of thing that gives English students headaches. (I had to throw in at least one insult;) I am one of the most intelligent & articulate people I know. I can name five people offhand who are better at both than me.
The point of all this bragging? I'm also a darn nice guy. which counts for infintely more than intelligence.
Intellect without Empathy is just fucking useless.
All the best,

*L* riiiight.
Anyways, about the story: Awesome, if fast, ending...that "bastard" comment flew past me the first time, and when Spike died I thought it was a little rushed (because the commander didn't dwell on it at all I guess...) but the very end was great, almost chilling. All of your other chapters ended with a little "chat", but leaving this one bare was perfect. It shows the agony of command.
About EMS: I know plenty of people like this (for some reason or other, I seem to gravitate to them...why??)...And like them, he wins the logical argument (such as it was) and loses everything else: no friends, no enjoyment of anything besides aggravating other people. I was quite glad to see him gone; I thought the whole debacle was more annoying than funny, and it took away from praising (or criticizing) the story, which is what the comments are for. He would have been better off saying "This sucked" and going away..
But that's just my opinion for anyone who wanders in (.Praetor seems to have poofled like a 'toss). THoughtful ending to a good story. ^^

heh heh... "Anywho"
*ahem* EMS should get his finger out of his ass, and his nose out of his dictionary, and make a valid point. Or, possibly, he LIKES looking like a 11-year-old English Major Student. HE probably is one of those brainiacs who skipped 8 Grades in school. I know one of those kids, she's a bitch who thinks she's better than everyone because she skipped 5 Grades. 8[

Anyone ever wonder what else EMS could stand for? Ever Matriculating student... nah..., Emergency Medical Sturgeon... nah..., Elementalist Master Sammo (last a proper name)... best I can think up...
By the way, thank you all who enjoyed the story, it's nice to see new people are enjoying it after Mark4 put up the link. |

OMG comment 209 OWNS!
That is actually the funniest quote from the whole flame war. That was one of the very few parts of it that i was actually laughing out loud. It is just unbelievable how ridiculous that is!!! Just look at this, supposedly posted by a friend of EMS's:
"He wrote that stuff to piss you people off. Every angry response, every post that attacked his "opinions" racked up another point for him even though you didn't know it. He sat back the whole time laughing at everyone because he could manipulate you so easily. This whole thing was just a game. Congrats folks, EMS won."
Thats the funny part. I can just picture Praetor reading that post and saying "NOOOOOO!!!! DAMN!! I just cant believe it....every time i thought i was totally owning EMS in logic and attitude, I WAS MERELY ENTERTAINING HIM ALL ALONG!!! WE WERE JUST PAWNS IN THE MASTERMINDED GAME TO MAKE US SQUIRM UNDER HIS ATTACKS FOR HIS AMUSEMENT!! THERE IS NO GOD!!!!! =[[[[[[[["
In the end is came down to who was actually laughing at whom, which is the most absolutely silly thing i can imagine. It basically went like this:
EMS: this story sucks your all lamers
Prae: no you suck ems, wtf is your problem
EMS: Carl Sagan owns you all
Prae: OMG Carl Sagan was a stupid newbie
EMS: "Dont you DARE downplay him as a mere intepreter!!"(also a very funny quote. Sagan was prolly his grandfather or something)
Prae: Ok fine whatever, what exactly was wrong with the story?
Everyone else: You suck EMS! (random insults, assaults on his logic, etc.)
EMS: HAHAHAHAHAH I OWN YOU ALL!!! I AM LAUGHING AT YOU! YOU ENTERTAIN ME! CARL SAGAN IS GOD! I FIND IT AMUSING THAT YOU DISLIKE ME FOR BEING AN ASSHOLE!!! MUAHAHAH!!!
Prae: Uh actually dude, we arent getting upset, WE are the ones laughing at YOU. Btw, you still never said whats wrong with the story.
EMS: whoa sorry, i was sick for a while, so i am going to ignore most of your points, and the glaringly obvious question of what exactly i hated about your story, and make a silly analogy, and once again wear out my word program's Thesaurus.
Prae and everyone else: Hahaha that is so pathetic, we owned you all along and have been laughing at you.
Then, the funniest part of it all, where EMS finally reveals his ultimate trump card and completely smashes any and all possibity of debate with him, in that fateful post #209, basically his friend or whatever saying "muahahaha!!! All along we have been laughing at you fools! We 0wn J00!!!" then he vanishes in a dark puff of smoke, leaving prae and everyone else aghast at this incredible turn of events. Next we need Prae to say something like "So it seems, EMS's friend, but actually, i and everyone else have been secretely laughing at YOU all along!! muahaahahha!!!! Checkmate, the game is done. MUAHAHAHAHAH!!"
Also, one other funny quote: "If that is true, then 'FanFic' must be the greatest waste of human effort known to man" - EMS
That is the most completely moronic statement i heard him say, and that is among a sea of lots o moronic statements. One obvious example to defeat that lil statement that comes to mind is the Egyptian Pyramids. I mean, compare the effort involved with them to the effort involved with PL:C. then compare the results of the Pyramids with the results of PL:C. Lets see...
Pyramids: Effort - thousands of slave lives spent in miserable squalor hauling huge pieces of the Pyramids and putting them together.
Result - The Egyptian rulers have a nice tomb, and they will be very well off in the silly Egyptian religeous belief in the afterlife.
PL:C Effort - I dont really know, maybe 10 hours to 30 hours would be my guess of leisurely (ack i cant spell) writing, most of it fun, i assume.
Results - Prae gets a happy feeling of accomplishment, and lots of people like me get a fun story to read. And EMS and his evil henchmen (err.. henchMAN) get a handy outlet to practice their wicked manipulative ways.
So after this lil analysis, i definately think PL:C > Pyramids.
And whats funny is saying that something is "the biggest waste of human effort known to man" or even saying anything is the "biggest" anything is so obviously open to argument that EMS's complete lack of debate skills are not only in stark contrast to his apparant vocabulary, but completely obvious =[. Which in turn further supports the "Great thesaurus scandal", also one of my favorite moments in this flame war.
Now i want EMS to come back and make fun of my apparant maturity so i can secretly laugh at him and turn the tables on him and his less educated cronie.
Oh man i found this comments section mmore entertaining than the writing in question =]. |

Spelling and grammar errors
Spike went many chapters without a distant glance (Although they way you brought him back was almost heroic and supportive of his dissapearance), But also in that you glanced through the killing of a main character far too easilly... You did need to have the commander through his mug across the room but some emmotion would have been supportive and "Real"

Great story, just terrific fan fiction. Hope that everything is going well for you, and I enjoyed both of your stories.

293rd.
Research failed. I was going to look and see if this was, indeed, the first fanfic on BR.com, but I got lazy after about report number 14 or so.
In any case, this is some of the best writing on this site. This is up there with Dref's "When Worlds Collide" and CM's "Dodging the Parabola Fish." This is -that- excellent. It's now going to be among the top things that I recommend people read on this site(along with those other two).
When Worlds Collide makes you really think about alot of horrible things("what if someone that you knew over the internet died? ..you would never know"). Dodging the Parabola Fish leaves you feeling content, and laughing at all the good jokes and writing. This felt like finishing a good and entertaining fantasy novel. I enjoyed it more than I am enjoying this Wheel of Time book that I am reading right now.
Awesome.
Oh, and, by the way. I am EMS muhaha. |

I just have to say, I remember reading this when it first appeared on the hallowed pages of battlereports.com way back in the day. And, having just read it again five years later, it's still some really good fan fiction.
I'm really glad to see that the site is still around. Makes work go by so much faster.
Hopefully I'll see some of you on battle.net |

| rofl - it's quite obvious EMS was another random high school kid who decided to wade around with a largely redundant and useless vocabulary, glowering in his own self-perceived superiority. I must say that war of words was hilarious and rather pitiful from EMS' standpoint. God forbid we write a story about another story. Burn Paradise Lost - hell, burn every work that references another. |
