Hope you enjoyed my first attempt at an interactive battle report. I was sittin' at work one day during a slow period trying to think of a way to make battlereports more fun and I remembered those old <i>Choose your own Adventure</i> books I used to read in grade school. Obviously this is nowhere near as complex, but I still think it is a fun, new way to do battlereports.
Since this is my first attempt I would like to hear any type of constructive criticism, any suggestions, anything that you think would improve this type of report.
Anyone who thinks they can put together something like this, feel free to steal my idea and improve upon it. I would love to see more of these where i don't know the "proper path" to follow... hehe

Very good first try, Dref. More than 2 possible decisions per event would have been nice, and of course when 1 decision is always wrong and the other is correct, it becomes somewhat linear and you get the feeling the author is pushing you in a specific direction instead of actually bestowing freedom of choice upon you. TT, I honestly considered that. However, you have to remember in this case, there is only one true ending... This is based off of one game. That made it difficult to tread to far from the main line of events because obviously, the rest were simply what could have happened.
I was still trying to preserve the battle report form so if the reader wasn't interested in the choices, they could still figure out what really happened.

But TT is right, more choices. I know there is only one right ending, but two wrongs per page perhaps? And perhaps OUR player made some wrongs? then the right choice becomes a step past that wrong (how it looks after the wrong move), while one of the wrongs is the path of the game, but OUR player survives. |

Thanks for all the support guys. I admit, 5 endings, 1 right 4 wrong, does keep the story pretty linear but that is kind of what I was shooting for in order to keep the actual battle report intact.
Anyone who's played SC enough knows sometimes you can make the wrong choice and still come out ahead and sometimes you make all the right choices and still lose. Obviously there is a lot to experiment with here and a lot of possibilities to explore. This is merely a prototype, I am sure that this idea can be improved upon.

I really hate people like you. Although I am sure tons of people aspire to write good BR's, people like you go and do something so amazingly well done, innovative, and in general kick ass, that I go, why bother? Seriously, how do you expect people to comete with this?
I mean, I am sure some near demi-god like person will take your idea and make a better report (more choices, etc) but you have introduced an amazing innovation, and even if you ignore the gimmick, it is still a funny and great report (worthy of at least a 8 or 9 sans choose your own adventure aspect).

You can save the game when you come upon to the branch where you need to make decision. Soon as you choose one decision, write the BR as it is, and after the game, go back and make different choice, and see the end-result. Maybe it will branch into something that is much more interactive. Don't forget, you can save mid-game =D

What you could do to stop people looking down on the status bar is use Javascript. I don't much about it but there is a way you can make whatever words you want appear there. So you could have choice 1 choice 2 on so on..

Believe or not, in the real game, the ultralisks never attacked. They were in the pack with the zerglings heading for T_Mac's base. However, I think the wraith attack threw Ko[B]old off because the Ultralisks stopped at about the halfway point and never moved for the rest of the game.

OMFG. This report is just way too cool. I was skeptical when I saw the perfect 10, but now I understand...
I agree with the idea of saving the game at certain points, and requiring players to change strats when they do. Of course, it would have some drawbacks in that players would then be able to use knowledge gleaned from previous playings... i.e., you discover an opponent's expansion just as your last base is being razed, then as soon as the saved game is re-loaded you head straight for that expansion. Still, I think the idea has potential.
And I'm proud to say I got it all right on the first try, although I came very close to going battlecruisers and getting scourged to death.
As regards previous comments about report quality: I agree that a 10 should be reserved for a truly perfect report, in an ideal world; and in such a world this would get, say, a 9. However, this is not an ideal world. Giving this report a 9 would be equivalent to saying it's no better than, say, my Mind Control Madness report; and while I'm rather fond of that report, it just don't measure up to this.

| okay, looks like I am really late on the comment scene. Dref, I have no comments for you to do the report better....that is where you do your golden work...my comments are in the game style and playing ability of the players....A terran versus Zerg game should include attacks made by the zerg, held off by the terran and then repelled in late game with (in this case) either bc's or Wraiths. But, what I see as not very threatening in this game is the lack of either attacking or powering by the zerg base. I was just kinda wondering what the zerg was doing, or if he was saving his money to buy stocks in the terran? Well, it was a well reported game, oh, what the hell am I saying...they should have made a new catagory for this report....it would be called...Wait, a new pole....what should Dref's report be called? |

I don't think there's anything I can say that hasn't already been said, but...
Innovative! An original Battle-report! That comes about once in every lifetime!
This is a true first. Admittedly a longer BR would have been better, but you were just testing the water so couldn't have put loads of effort into something people wouldn't have liked.
It reminds me of those 'Figthing Fantasy' and 'Sonic The Hedgehog' interactive books that I picked up years ago at WHSmith. Those were a lot more complicated (Involving dice rolls and items and everything) But this report reminds me fondly of them.
... Say that's an idea. Why not have one of those 'random counters' in your next simulated BR to simulate a dice roll?

Quite creative, though the fact that there is always one "right" decision and one "wrong" one makes the report less interactive than you might have hoped. Also, you should probably shove in a little JavaScript to hide the URL, or change the file names so that one file doesn't obviously show "End" and another show a "Part" (continuation). (if you want to help me, i am still under construction... do you know those "installing" process on windows? where you type in some directories, or pick certain types you want to install, and on the bottom of the window rests "back, forward, and cancel, or ok" button??? i was trying to {still am} make one so that people choose a destiny, then click "next" to find out how..)
