This BR was pretty good, though yellow on white hurts my eyes. Maybe if this was on a black background and the rest of the text was white it would be easier to read.

Hey there, nice job with that first report. The pics looked great and the writing was good too. You also had a good layout.
My main suggestion is that you go with more text and less pics. Your picture to text ratio seemed to lean a little heavy on the pic side. Your battles could use more description.
Keep up the good work though. Nice to see quality reports coming from first timers.

Reading this report has brought to a head an issue that has been bothering me since I posted my first battlereport. This issue concerns the importance of quality writing vs. graphical content. My position is that quality writing is far more important and entertaining than quality graphics and I hope to open this subject up to robust debate.
First, this report. Its a good report with great graphics and a fine first effort. I completely agree with Drefsab's remarks but I must take him to task for giving it an 8. Why did this report deserve an 8? Please compare it to my text-only report which was officially rated 7 and has generated 30 comments so far not counting my own 3 responses. The BR's of this site are written primarily for entertainment and I ask you after reading both which entertained you most? I invite all other readers to do so as well to place this debate in proper context.
I believe 7 is the threshold rating for a gold report. If your purpose is to bring to the audience's attention a notable first effort, giving it extra longevity on the news page, then 7 is the mark that says, "look out for this guy in the future!" However, Icefyst's writing content is weak, as you point out in your remarks, and although I enjoyed looking at his pics I can see that stuff all day long playing games myself on battle.net. To quote ~CattleBruiser's~ Guide to Battle Reporting, "A good Battle Report is good with or without pictures." I challenge you, the founders of this site, and all the other raters to live up to this principle. Ask yourselves, "would this report have been worth reading without the pics?" I think in Icefyst's example the answer is an emphatic no. With all due respect to the participants who I have played with before, this was a very typical game that was not enhanced by the writing coverage. However, Icefyst's command of html is considerable and I definitely feel he deserves the notice of a first time gold report - if his writing content improves then the wonderful graphics will be there to really push his future reports over the edge.
Graphics alone however should never be allowed to inflate the entertainment value of a marginal report.
I cite the Star Wars principle. Episode IV represented the cutting edge of special effects when it was first released in 1977. Nevertheless it was the brilliant story and script that carried the day and made it wildly successful. Release Episode I then, today, or anytime without the support of the goliath Star Wars franchise behind it and it would fail misirably. George Lucas was "strongly encouraged" by 20th century Fox to use script doctors to improve the dialogue and pace of his Episode IV script back in the seventies. They get no credit in the title but they made his story successful. He didn't even write or direct The Empire Strikes Back but its success and the continued success of the series and its marketing made him less and less dependent on the talent of writers and directors more talented than himself. The result? A virgin Darth Vader birth, the Force is really some sort of blood disease, and Jar Jar Binks! (Don't even get me started on the Ewoks!)
Taking this principle back to the forum of battle reporting or web page designing in general, content always wins over graphics. If Icefyst doesn't bring up the level of his writing I would expect his reports to drop below the level of the gold report no matter how impressive the graphics. Now I must say that online reporting is a visual medium and graphics are an integral part of it. Otherwise just go out and by the book right? I think any report deserving a 10 must have a visual component, but we can't forget that the best visualizer we have is our own imagination. There isn't a graphics engine or scripting language out there that can compete with it and probably never will be. Paint a picture, yes, but let the audience's imagination fill in the details.
I hope my arguments have convinced you. Don't let this trend of rewarding graphics and pics for their own sake continue. Don't rate a report highly just because it has famous players in it or it covers a tournament. If it doesn't entertain or it doesn't offer useful strategy it doesn't deserve to be a gold report.
Thankyou for your time.

I found the writing clear and easy to follow. A little bit skimpy on details but not that bad. I do agree w/Slayangel that pictures should not be the deciding factor in the rating of a report.

| WOW.... nice Slayangel.... having already talked to you I take no offense cuase im just an example... I will try to include more text next time, which means taking better notes, cause mine were CRAP. Oh well its all just a learning experience. On the note of graphics, I have no talent there, it is just paint shop pro doing all the work. But I wont complain. thanks for the input |

To get the background a different color, do this:
(#000000 = black)
Your BattleReport

I replaced the greater-than and less-than signs with brackets, but that's the main jist of it.
Good job!

[Comment on Slayangel's post]
First: I absolutely agree with you. I said something similar in the comment section of Spuzz's flash report.
You state that the writing of a BR must be in such a way that we can imagine the situation. (English isn't my 1st language, so I suggest you all read his post to know what I mean).
But, you want to read a BR as entertainment. When I have to think when I read a BR (like when someone tries to explain where something happens and does a bad job at that), I automatically rate it lower. Why would one ask. I honestly don't know but for me it decreases the quality.
Continuing on my example of a location of something: if the game is on Lost Temple (or Dire Straits) or any other overly played (though relatively small) map, a short description like "Just outside the 12 natural" or "the left middle island" is enough for me (and almost anyone I think) to imagine where it happens. On some lesser played maps (like showdown or Rivalry) such a description just won't do the job. This is where pics come into play. Get the minimap, get a photo editor and you spare yourself the trouble of writing like 3 lines of description without knowing for sure if everyone knows what you mean. In this BR for example, I had no clue to where the protoss player constructed his dual gates (though i still think it's a stupid thing to do..). A little pic of the minimap would have told me that.
To be honest, the reports I give the highest marks are the ones with regular minimap updates and interruptions to tell what the players possess at a given time.
Being honest again, besides reading BR's for fun, I also hope to improve my game by it. Seeing what the good players do, when they expand, where they expand and what their strats are. In this pics are also a must, though without text it's still nothing.
Well that my two cents.
I learned a lesson: My English is baaaaaaad.

Due to my limited attention span, I like graphics far more than text. Why change the medium of a game? I admit that it takes talent to explain a game with text, however it is like listening to a hockey game on the radio, you watch the highlights later on on TV and the goals are way different than your imagination created.
I find you can get the gist of a game from lots of pictures with short explanations far easier than lots of explanation with very few pictures....and you have to concentrate to do it.

Not that this quest for better writing is any less important than slayangel and pheonix have stressed, but, like pheonix who rates BR's lower automatically if he cant figure whats being said, I rate lower if there's no pics. Starcraft is a visual game, and I want to see the BR, not imagine it.
Anyway, I think this was the most newbie game ever reported, but a good job nonetheless.
I'm sorry its just that sometimes in this debate over "writing is better than pics" i get this whiff of arrogance from the people who want better writing. I think that a request for better writing is always a good thing, but I love the pics, so dont be a dick.
peace
