Also, I think you made a mistake (I could be wrong) but you said that Mr.X expands to the nearest free natural, then main, but in the mini-battle at the end, he went

Ahhh, another Breeze report. You really are the best reporter around right now. Those flash movies are simply spectacular, and your 3D images are fantastic as well.
I did like the game in part 1 better, but the game in part 1 was truly epic, so it's hard to top that. I have a question for you though: If the third game sucks real bad (ie its really short or something), are you going to ask them to replay it?

The game, erm, suxed :(. A <i> little </i> bit of a dissapointment after all the pics. It's not good that you wasted such incredible graphics skills ( like, what are you, an MIT Doc or something?? ) on such a . . . predictable short game on temple.
Second, erm, alt texts. Not good.
Third, there was very little real humour here, and the writing was just a <i> little </i> plain.

My reports have always been treated well by the raters but some other people's haven't and I don't feel good about that. I am starting to get a bit sick of the rating system as a whole since I believe battlereporting is an art. Rating art is a bit improper and this has always been bugging me...
But now the rating system exists and I have to find my way to feel ok about it. The alt text isn't just a joke, and it isn't that serious either. If someone feels his ego is hurt from such a message that's his own problem. If you are trying to be real raters, you shouldn't care about the person who has written the report but about the BR only, so consider this as a test too.
I am surprised the report has been rated so high, I guess most raters didn't read the alt-text message before rating :). If any did read it before rating, I am happy they rated it so good.
Some reporters try to suck up to the raters, I want to do the opposite since a bad rating feels better to me than a high rating that is not deserved.
And indeed thanks to all people that enjoyed the report, I'm real glad... Don't worry JV no matter what happens I will still do my best when I work on my reports, and thank you for everything that you have done. Well I just had to say that, I hope it won't be treated as asskissing ;) |

Breeze, you release good reports, but its kind of annoying to see you trying to stir up trouble. You don't have to kiss up to the raters, but you don't have to attack their integrity either.
Do you really believe that this site would be a better place without report ratings? Not everyone has time to read every report that's on the front page. In fact, most of the time when I visit this site, I have time to read 1, maybe 2 reports. Ratings allow me, as a reader, to pick and choose which reports are worth my time and which reports are 4 pool BGH reports. Not to mention that a good rating helps generate hits for new talent. And hell, when someone has worked hard on a report and receives five high ratings from their peers, you can't say it doesn't make them feel good about their work.
The rating system does serve a purpose and there have been very few times when an overall rating on a report has caused controversy. Again, I revert back to statistics from a previous post. Approximately .05% - .1% of all overall report ratings cause controversy among the community. Notice the decimal point there. You're going to have to do a lot more than make vague, unsubstantiated corruption claims and clever, hidden messages in alt text to convince me of a problem.
Seriously, you're reports are pretty damned impressive, but lately, you're attitude is shit. I enjoy reading battle reports, but rating takes time and effort, and I don't get compensated in any way for rating. The only thing I ever get from report rating is, "God Dref, WTF were you thinking when you rated that?" So before you continue on your little quest against the BR.com staff, perhaps you should consider the free service provided here and the name you've been able to make for yourself through this service. And then when you've done that, perhaps show a little gratitude? I really don't think that's too much to ask.

Don't underestimate the readers, I know what you mean but I have been part of comunities where there werent ratings and such, but people didn't seem to have trouble downloading what they needed and the site I am talking about was about a european racing sim but it generated hits comparable to Starcraft.org when SC.org was in it's glory. There weren't even comment sections, but I remember I was trying as hard as I try here, because I don't really get my enjoyment from "making myself a name" or whatever you do.
Most of the features on that site here are amazing and I love them, and if I don't like ratings do I have to lie about that? Did I say shut the rating system? I say I don't like it, that's all, even if most of the raters take their job seriously.

This was rated unfairly, b/c it was total pure ownage, and deserves a perfect 10. King Lewis... I admit, he has great BR's, but I personally don't like his Star Wars theme, and I also think that reading his reports are very difficult, and are as flatly written w/o humor like Breeze's.
Breeze gave a great flash intro, great coverage of a game between great players, etc. If you honestly think that deserved a 9, and I'm talking to the rater who gave it a 9, please say what you would rate Lewis' report. BOTH have very good flash intro's, both have pretty choppy grammar, and both have excellent pictures.
This should get a ten b/c Breeze actually tried to correct his grammer, by getting I believe, FOUR people to correct it. I mean, for Christ sakes, 4 beta testers! That's more than Head Games use! Breeze is ownage, and anyone who disagrees doesn't know what they are talking about.

Me thinks the raters at this site are a little bit sensitive. After all they are the ones who expect report writers not to get upset and "whine" when reports which takes many hours of labor to complete don't get the rating they expected or thought they deserved. I know, "Raters can suck me," isn't exactly constructive critism but he has expressed his opinions before. He knows he is in the minority and that things are unlikely to change so just as a form of protest he uses the alt-text to remind everyone of his views. Anyway, from past experience raters seem to be extremely sensitive to critism of their ratings or the rating system in general. Perhaps if they are going to be objective judges they need to a bit calmer when criticized.
A couple other things, since when did this site object to people stirring up trouble? Controversy = hits, and I don't think this is a negative controversy (or atleast it doesn't have to be). Finally, rating is a free service and I admit that gives them some reason to be upset at constantly being attacked, but writting for this site is also volunteer and takes a considerable amount of hours.
Anyway, END rant.

Breeze, good job, I think this does deserve a 10, but pissing off raters isn't something that one would typically put into what you yourself called "a work of art". Imagine if Michalangelo put "The Pope can suck me" on the Sistene Chapel. Sure there are some reports that were rated unfairly, but the ratings reflect he rater's personal opinion on the report. Just like the judges in the Olympics must give artistic things like gymnastics or diving a rating, so must the raters of BRs. If you feel there were things that were rated unfairly, why don't you ask to become a rater yourself. Then you can affect the rating as you feel. But saying that a system is corrupt just because some people didn't agree with you is somewhat intolerant. If you feel there were some really huge misratings, then give an example instead of saying that you already did in some godforsaken Forum post from 2 weeks ago. I'm sure that if you gave some good examples, some people might even agree with you. As it is, I don't think anyone has any idea why you're so pissed. Just my opinion. Once again, excelent report.

William, I understand what you're saying. We've debated this before and I respect your opinion. However, in Breeze's case, he first called the raters "corrupt" in a post on the BR.com forum which was irritating enough. Then he has the gall to put "Raters can suck me" in alt-text. That's downright insulting. I really don't think anyone is being overly sensitive here. Especially since we are taking free time out of our schedules to provide a free service that helps both the readers and the writers at this site.

Ratings are important to this site. Not only do they show off the better reports, give hits, and all. Drefsab: Yeah, I agree with you basically. Calling the raters corrupt is out of line unless you really have strong evidence. At any rate I certainly don't agree with it. As for raters intentionally wronging reporters, no I don't think that has ever happened, and I would certainly hope it never does. Neither do I believe reporters should "mistreat" raters. However, raters do criticize reporters work (its their job) and it is only fair that reporters get to do the same back with out being personally attacked for it. Granted some of Breezes "criticisms" were a little more like personal attacks, but I really thought the alt-text would be taken all in fun. (My friends say stuff like that to each other like 100 times a day)
Anyway as for me just so no one gets confused, I think the raters at this site are great people. I don't really like the system, but I have agreed to disagree until someone can up with something better that pleases everyone. Willy, the staff and raters can take a whole lot of criticism.
The thing is, a LOT of people still don't understand the rating system, and what its designed to do. They complain about 1 bad rating out of the five they get, even when the average is exactly on target. Then they bitch about some other guys rating which is .5 better than thiers and they don't like his report as well as thier own.
Look at WLJ. He's calling the rater who gave this a nine a crack smoker, when the overall rating is 9.8, making this report fall into the "almost perfect" category. Go read the comments on the last ten reports, and I bet you'll see at least five have some asinine rating complaint.
The rating system isn't perfect, because its run by people. People giving thier opinion on reports so its easier for the reader who doesn't have the time or the patience to slog through ten crappy BGH reports about how they backstabbed thier mothers uncle's cousins roomate to get to a report like this. And it works pretty damn good overall.
Which is why it pisses me off when Breeze starts telling my raters to suck him, when they are giving him tens, that he deserves. They do a great job on 99.9% of the reports they rate. And that last .1% is balanced out by the other 4 guys that rated the report. I have no idea what the problem is. I've not yet seen one concrete example. I'm willing to listen. I want to hear about this "corruption".
But as far as I can see, every rater has rated each report in accordance with how much they enjoyed it, which is exactly what they are expected to do. (this is designed so the average reader will enjoy the report about as much as the average of the raters) I haven't seen personal feelings get in the way of anything.

Ratings are a raters opinion of the report. We have all kinds of raters, from Fox^1 who loves text more then any sort of flash or pictures, to Bob, the ultimate critic, to Drefsab who loves humor, etc etc etc. They represent a fairly broad spectrum of the viewing population. They give their own personnal ratings. Is it fair? HELL NO! Its peoples opinions. But guess what, this isnt the olympics. Nothing is clear and defined. Its like judging the best movie of all time, or the best book. It cant be done! Diffrent people with diffrent taste will arrange them diffrently, and the sheer volume of reports means there is bound to be LOTS of ties. I DARE you to organize these reports from best to worst and post them, and youll find 500 posts in the next 1 hour telling you you are wrong and why.
So why complain? These are peoples opinions, and there is NO WAY you can say a persons opinion is corrupt. If they like one report more, they like it more! Period! How can you demand they change what they like best? What gives you that right? Thats why there are 5 ratings, so you get an average.
What I DO have a problem with is raters rating by the average. Example, giving this report a 9 so that the average is 9.8, when it is better then a 9. Well you say, its not a 10 also, thats why we should have double digit scoring. 98, 100, 90, etc. It would allow raters to rate based on their opinions and not based on the average, since rating according to the average defeats the whole argument of a rating is their opinion.
Under our current rating system, Breeze should have a 10 even though he deserves a 9.8. Thats the only injustice of the rating system, raters trying to balance each other out because the rating system is inflexible. |

1) "Reporters can suck me". BFD! The trash talk in NoHunters from 1 hour of conversation is worse at ANY time of day!
2) "Corrupt"... yeah, wrong choice of words, but his first language isn't english! This is all the more amazing since he made a MAJOR improvement writing in the second report, with (so I hear now) 4 editors, and hasn't really been recognized enough for the effort.
3) "He has nothing to complain about since HIS reports get near perfect scores"... He's championing the other reporters. You keep saying that he's being spoiled, and he keeps saying (as he said the first time) he WAS TALKING ABOUT THE OTHER REPORTERS. The only valid response was the one comment which said "Thanks, but no thanks" for the cause. Respond to that.
4) Mark, he did provide evidence of some specific reports, which you seem not to have refuted. I think you could hold a pretty decent argument if you would consider those reports. *sigh* here we go again... remember .praetor's text only reports? Or .praetor's 'family site'? Well i think the same arguments there can be used here.
The ratings represent a person's opinion. While i personally feel that '11' needs to be made an option for this report, i understand (ok, not really...) that someone might feel it is a 9- or perhaps more appropriately not perfect 10 material. The overall rating is .2 under perfect 10, and that isn't bad at all. When .praetor was giving sp<b>|</b>ne low scores for obscenity or something, it represented <i>his opinion</i> of the report: namely, it was innapropriate despite the fact that the actual report was good.
Was this report better than most of the other '10' reports on this site? I think so, but apparently someone else doesn't. In any case, if Breeze has a problem with the raters he should be able to take it up with them- however, if he has nothing constructive to say he should leave them alone.
On a completely unrelated side note.
Those graphics are f*cking incredible. The 3d and flash are <b>very</b> professional. Just out of curiosity, do you use Adobe Illustrator (or something like it) to make those? It just seemed like Illustrator work. I'll shut up now.

The 3D art is nice. If you weren't doing it for fun, but instead for potential pay, you might find the comments instead saying, "The hatchery has too many ridges." or "You didn't model enough stuff for a battle scene." etc...
It's all relative.
Anyway, it's another great report. The general consensis is that 1-1 reports on Lost Temple are common enough and easy enough to keep track of that they almost never get or deserve 10.0 ratings. The fact that some people, including you with your first report, managed to get 10.0s on "been there, done that" lost temple, shows that you truly did something special.
It's smart what you're doing here Breeze, slowly building up a library of the Temple map and buildings and units so that you can quickly crank out pics from your growing 3D library. Five or Six reports from now, you'll have enough models to really show some serious action. It's like you've combined a TC with existing units and reporting, which is a nice touch.
99.9% of the people here love or at least like your work, which I know is a great feeling, and though I didn't rate this report, I wouldn't change the rating based on a subliminal message, even if I didn't like it. It's natural to dislike reviewers, especially when in many instances in life, the people reviewing something couldn't "do" what they are reviewing.
Fortunately, here at BR.com, the raters are all top reporters in their own right and most have pushed the envelope in some form or another at some time or another. I'm talking about Bob, Dref, .Praetor, etc...

This report was a 10 based upon the AMAZING graphics and flash intro alone. Truly this set the standard for graphics at this site. With all due respect to YRM, this was the best eye candy yet.
However - graphics alone to not make a report. For starters - it was a one sided game, and while I wasnt there I dont think that the 3 missed storms changed the entire outcome. I think it was packaged that way so the report would appear to be more interesting, but the toss troop count was low enough that 5 hatches would have powered him out regardless.
Finally, other than the eye candy - this report quite frankly bored me. I like to be entertained when I read a report. This one didn't do that after the flash intro. Go read the YRM reports. Now them were some entertaining reports.
Good job discussing tactics - definately a plus.
These are the types of thoughts that go through my head as I decide what to rate a report. While I would have given this a 10 if I had the opportunity to rate it, a nine is clearly justified in my mind. I don't know if he is still around, but someone like praetor would probably give this a 9. Its not the grammer or spelling - its the STYLE of the writing, or really the LACK thereof.
My closing thoughts are that what Mark4 is saying, if you want to complain, but don't have a solution to suggest, plz STFU. I agree completely.
Its easy to point out the problems in life. Much more difficult to solve them. |

Yeah, Whoop, no question the reports push the envelope, credit where it's due. I'm less impressed by 3D or flash since I have access to both, but without a doubt, this was a great report. I'm glad it got the 10s. The first in the series had more shock value because it was surprising to see the level of art.
I'll probably get flamed for the suggestion, because I know it's hard to get top players to try new maps, but I can't imagine learning anything new about Lost Temple than has already been told. |

My opinion on this whole thing is that A) you can have a gosy (gosy is a fucking awesome word adamn it) report with out pictures, but you cant have a gosy br without text... I can't believe the comment section on this fantastic report turned into this slanging match. I thought the alt-text was funny (as an insult it was pretty mild) because I'd read the forum posts preceding it.

That was something I'd missed, and something reprehensible. It was due to poor rating - not by the raters, but by one rater. The alt text should have read: "Bob can suck me". To group him with the others was a mistake.
Sure it means Seph was sensitive. So are Mark4 and Drefsab when they felt their integrity challenged. Bob is not sensitive to criticism, but is also insensitive to his criticism of others.
I don't offer a solution. I would extend a heart-felt plea to Bob not to be so cruel, but others have tried before, and don't think I can do it better. But the rating system need not be changed. Art, I think, should be criticised, i.e. rated.
Finally, the thing that annoys me the most about this fiasco are the people who made ignorant comments about this without reading the ones preceding, not even Breeze's ones.

I just want to mentoin something about the 3d and flash that everyone is talking about. I could do 3d stuff even in my first report and in every of my 11 reports so far. But I didn't do that. If you check out my reports, I have 11 of them already, and they aren't all alike.
If I am doing this best of 3 like a show with all the 3d and flash, that doesn't mean that I intend to always do such reports. And the 2d pics I didn't want edited much, the way I did it (without emty space and weird arrangement in the pics) it saves up space so I can have this flash intro and still have a report that is just 2 MB. And I also think it looks more serious when the pics are aranged this way, that's why I didn't even try to do any jokes - this report isn't aimed at those who like funny reports, it's aimed at the whole SC comunity.
I don't do this for the ratings, that should be clear to everyone. If I feel like doing a text only, I'll do it. I have done a black and white report which looks like a lesson, also a theme-oriented report with WWII images and text like in the Aeneid (.Praetor liked it =], I'm proud of that), half my reports are first person reports, so just don't think 3d and flash are something that important to me, the most typical aspect of mine is that I always try something different.
Oh, and just wanted to tell something to Scarab :). This site has nothing to do with me being Breeze, since this is my real life name, not a nick.
To the raters: I am glad if some of them understand the alt-text message as a small protest and not some personal insult towards every rater personally. Fox didn't sound pissed after reading the message alone... perhaps he understood what I meant, and I bet some other raters did too. To those raters that feel it's such a big deal and feel sooo insulted - well I'm just sorry for you. You like reading and rating reports where the players are insulted and depicted as idiots by the reporter (that's a tradition on this site) and you laugh your asses off, now when someone provokes you, you start whining. Well whine on.

I'm still not sure about why he used that alt text but, does it really matter ? I mean this report was still very enjoyable. Those 3D temple maps are making me horny :). For any of you out there (YoMaD) who are interested in 3D Modeling... there's a program called Animation Master by Hash that is about $200 and pretty easy to use, although the renderer isn't great. If you wanted to model a map, you could put a jpg of the actual map on your 3D top view window background and extrude out the splines that you trace and work over the object for a few hours-days until you had the model looking like you wanted. Texturing can be tricky, but if you keep it simple it can go alright for you.
If you haven't modeled stuff in 3D before, or even built legos, then sitting down and learning the concepts of 3D modeling aren't extremely easy (like picking up Photoshop).
Many of the different kinds of 3D packages offer more than one modeling style, such as box modeling, H-Splines, Nurbs, or metaball modeling. I'd guess, and only Breeze can answer for sure, that he modeled these models in either Animations Master or Lightwave, with an outside possibility of 3D Studio Max.
Anyway, it takes practice and talent before you can sit down and copy a hatchery or nexus like that.

Well.... the game sucked, even though it was fought by two players. Your effort was obvious into the report, because of the 3D renderings (which I know can be very hard..) and that nice flash intro. However, I found that the graphics were a little unnecessary? I'd rather see a full 3d rendered report than cut up bits...
The pictures that showed the battles were a good supplement to the text, but the game was rather boring. Essentially, Mr. X mass expanded like all zergs, added a single defiler for spice, blocked any reconnaisance. Episode only fought back with a devastating storm run and the beginning rushes. Mr. X lived, and like all zergs, just massed and killed. Wow, big deal. I doubt you would have reported this if it wasn't for it being the best of 3. Prolly would've been like "REMATCH?! ME BR!" right? :P
But, you're writing style, to me, owns bonez. I liked the text, but I don't think this one was AS great as your first one. Your first one was stunning, with a Korean <b>Protoss</b> player. Also, even though they played boring old temple, you managed to keep it alive because of the 3d rendering. I hope they play on a different map for game 3 ;[

The game might be boring to you and many others, but it's not easy to beat a Protoss like [EPIsode]:-=V=- since he has stunning micro abilities. Mr.X had to show insane intuition and reaction times to survive the Protoss attack in the center...
And also you are right, I think a reporter's job isn't to always pick "epic" games, but to report an event as it is. Games between top players are rarely long and epic like game one in this series, but I think they can help you improve your gameplay and that's why I like BR'ing such and it's a challenge to make them enjoyable for the readers.
YRM: I am studying at a ex-military naval academy in Bulgaria, I'll be a deck officer. It was a military one for the first 3 years I studied at it but now (3 weeks ago) they made it a civilian one. Yeah that's how weird things happen in Bulgaria.
I used 3d Studio Max, I have previously played around with the old DOS versions too, you can see some graphics done with those on that site I abandoned years ago.

I wonder if I should do game 3 ot start working on something else though. The two games I've reported so far have shown how good both the players are, it was really great that they allowed me to watch. Maybe it's better not to show the 3rd game where one of the players has to lose the event? I have a lot of new things in mind that I wanted to show in game 3, but I really wonder now. I can use those ideas for other reports anyway.

whoa... just read the comments. all of them. and then i read the alt+text. well...
first, picture this: a guy knows he's good at stuff like this... he's probably an artist in real life. he gets good ratings on the site and knows that he can crank off reports that will get really decent ratings. so then he touches on the aspect that the reports aren't ranked by some computer - they're ranked by people. people make a subjective call on how they perceive the report. realizing that raters are influenced by various factors that may not be directly related to the actual quality of the report itself, he creates this dillema where he writes "raters can suck me!!" in alt text. this forces any rater (that reads it) to suck back a flame while trying to be impartial about rating the report. bah.... i'm imagining the olympics and just before the marks are announced for some gymnastics event that the participating olympian goes over to the judges and gives them the bird.
kudos to the raters btw. despite breeze's flame, they rated it with (in my opinion) the exact overall rating this deserves. gw raters. and gw breeze... nice report.
oh ya, if you don't care about your rating, why flame the raters? why not flame the system? or better yet (as several ppl have suggested) try to find a solution that works better. i see ratings for video games in magazines... i see ratings for movies, music cds, and on and on... art *is* being rated. art is given a monetary value as it sits on walls and it is being scrutinized in terms of overall appreciation for it. it happens. you will be judged. if it's a website, you may be judged by the number or hits or amount of revenue. if it's a song, it could be it's longevity. whatever the case, there are groups out there who are trying to rate how much they perceive the given art. thoughts?

Breeze, when I posted that you should lose a point for your alt text, I was kidding. I am baffled that the ratings of this report have caused so much controversy. In my opinion, your report did exactly what it set out to do perfectly. It told a story from beginning to end, with no holes in the storyline and it told it an extremely entertaining manner.
I personally think some of the points being made about why a nine are half valid. Someone said that 1v1 games on temple are played out and someone else said that the game was one-sided. Neither of these was your fault, however both are true. Do I think it should affect the rating? Hell no. Do I think BRers should execute more severe judgement as to what gets reported? Hell yeah.
There is no doubt that your report was amazing eye-candy and alot of fun to read. I personally think it should have gotten a 10. But I think you anticipated a 10 and kudos growing out of everyone's hairy ass and feel disappointed that it didn't happen that way. I feel you on this one. It happens to everyone and it is very disappointing.
As far as the rater's go. Some of you guys need to get over yourselves. You rate reports and play starcraft. You don't need to be dicks about it. Breeze, you could calm yourself a little, too. |

| BTW Breeze don't <i> overestimate </i> the readers. I typically read everything gold or from a reputable name . . . but what if some new guy comes along and releases an excellent report? I would never read. I simply don't have the time. Ratings give you something to strife for ( aka a 10 ), make you want to give the report just a <i> little </i> more time. Ratings are what make this site. If you don't agree with the ratings you get, fine, but the raters pretty much know what they're talking about, and generally rate very fairly. |

Dagomar, I'm sorry to say this but you're just another victim of your country's education system and lifestyle that are so based on ratings and rankings. Don't you see how ridiculous this is? Comparing graphics and art in general by using numbers is just funny...
If you believe the ratings at this site so much then don't even try to talk to me since my lifetime average owns yours ;). And that's a joke indeed, hope you can understand what I mean. I just had a look at the statistics page, did you know Sp|nE and Bob The Newt are the best reporters ever? YRM, Mark4, Drefsab etc. just can't compete with those... that's not even funny it's pathetic. I just imagine someone new to this site looking at those statistics, god how much he would be fooled :(.
I don't remember ever looking at the ratings when I was choosing what report to read, except when I once ran a search about reports rated "10" just to find out that if I want to read about what I care I'll have to search the "giant listing of reports" where at least you can search for a word in the report's title too. I'm sorry but I just don't care about ffa's between persons I have only heard about from this site.
Oh Dagomar and look what you have written in comment No.82, I think the first paragraph there explains what made you write those 3 consecutive comments (thanks anyway). :)

At the time I posted this report I don't remember to have had bad feelings about any of the raters besides maybe Bob. It was really more a hatred I felt against the ratings and the way they make reporters get jealous at each other or frustrated. Anyway I don't care at all anymore... if someone needs ratings he can watch at them, I wouldn't.
About Ebert & Siskel... haven't watched that show but I guess that Ebert is the one from the Microsoft Cinemania CD, I really care reading what specifically he has to say about a movie, and not that much what he rates it in number of stars... ;) |
