Boy. That came off as arrogant. Especially since many people spend days on these "traditional" reports.
But since you seem to think little of these reports now, allow me to retort.
All of the "traditional" reports have to be thought of at at least the same level as your replays.
The traditional reports are more concise, as every little detail does not have to be glossed over. I'd rather spend 10 minutes reading a text-only report on an hour-long game rather than watching the whole replay (even if it is at 4x replay speed). Few people have that kind of time.
"I will often be wrong in my predictions during the game and that's half the fun." I don't want a color commentator like you that doesn't have a fucking clue what he's talking about.
I am normally not hostile like this, but you crossed the fucking line with "I dont see any redeeming value to traditional BRs". This is the site that was built with the amazing work of Mark4, YRM, ~CB~, Johnny_Vegas among others.
I respect the new format in which you present these battlereports, but I don't respect your attitude.

I'm entitled to my opinion and I'm truly saddened that you are angered by my word, but I am simply not arrogant. I'm opinionated and truly experienced. I have watched every replay, every movie that you can find on the internet. I have played with blizzard staff for hours and have played with Agent (and lost of course). I have beaten The-Feared members in both 1v1 and 2v2 - I think I'm still banned from their channel. Everyone is invited to do their own similar A/R BRs, as I will not be the last to do this. I have had over 40 downloads in about as many minutes, so as far as negativity goes in the comments section and the forums, it has been a success in my eyes. |

God...
Battlereport.
Replay.
See significant difference?
Replay is just a replay of what is going on, like recording things on VCR and watching it later.
Battlereport is a report of battle itself. Someone actually took TIME and EFFORT to create a report to tell to people. It is something that people can read through, skim through, glossing through main details. THAT is what battlereporting is about.
I do not care a DAMN about the fact that you have beatened the feared clan, or have played blah blah. Only thing I'm interested is in people's writing style. |

Another example of how sad this community is becoming. Along comes a new guy with a new idea. It's reasonably entertaining. He put a reasonable amount of work into it. Wtf does he get?
And endless parade of stupid flames without any real points. CrackHeadJeb implies that Jack9 shouldn't post these here because he 'doesn't like his attitude'. The Scarabs replies consist of a few swear words reposted a couple times. The only half valid point so far is that he did not put enough effort into this, or that in your personal opinion it's worthless.
In my personal opinion it's not worthless. The forum isn't any better a spot to post these than this is. I actually enjoy a running commentary. When there is a replay section, flame away for posting replays here, but there is no replay section. As Jack9 said, this is currently the best place.
Jack9 has responded with nothing but maturity and logical points. He has been responded to with nothing but a couple of coherent (though rationally lacking posts) and some useless and pointless flames. Just because you think it is easier for Jack9 to make these reports than it is to make a traditional text and picture br means nothing. The bottom line is how good is the end product, and I don't see where his falls so short. Especially compared to some of the crap 'brs' posted recently. This is how the community reacts to new ideas? This is how Jack9 is greeted?
You call him arrogant? If I was a newcomer and this was the reaction I got I would be more than a little contemptuous as well. And I do not see how he has been arrogant. He has said that he does not like text based reports, true, but I don't see how that qualifies as arrogance. Its simply an opinion, and much more tactfully worded than any opinion I've heard from a regular so far.
It's not really my place to judge all of you but all of you do nothing but judge, and unfairly to boot, so I will stick up for Jack9.

Oh, Napoleic. Thanks for making me out to be an ignorant flamer. To say I strongly disagreed with Jack9's statement:
"I dont see any redeeming value to traditional BRs now" (#10)
... would be an understatement.
My flame post contained:
"The traditional reports are more concise, as every little detail does not have to be glossed over."
"I don't want a color commentator like you that doesn't have a fucking clue what he's talking about."
Perhaps you've misconstrued my anger as being the same anger that others have. I did say I respected his new format in that post. I was an ass, though, which was uncharacteristic of me.
But I seriously hope I misconstrued Jack9's statement above. A whole community of Starcraft players spawned from these "pointless" traditional BRs. People have contributed tens of thousands of hours on these "pointless" BRs to keep people interested in battlereports.com over the years. And in my flame post, I defended the continued creation of these battlereports.
I personally don't care if these new reports are posted here. I, personally, will not view these reports, but I wish Jack9 the best of luck in the future.

| make way for the polite, non-profanities, god fearing boy. Jack9 has some points, with replays, many of which are smaller than the reports themselves, it will be faster to d/l, and would also show every single detail. That's the bad thing, every single detail could be incredibly insignifigant. Plus, replays lack humor, and cannot record the chat spoken in a game. Thus, if all br's turned into replays, it would be incredibly annoying and stupid. Br's are what this site is made of, and what we all fear is that replays will rain supreme over br's. It takes me on average 2 weeks to finish a br, for you... you've released 4 br's, all next to each other, all within a day. What does that show? Virtually speaking, nothing, considering that the famous people here put massive amounts of work into there br's, and that's what made them famous. Those br's are either incredibly humorous, or their pic level is great. Look at breeze's no mercy reports, can you find 3d graphics in a replay? Can you find flash? The reason why you're getting a poor reception is a) people fear that replays will replace br's, b) people just plain hate these things C) lots of other reasons. Well, I wish you luck (not that you'll have much) |

Jeb: I don't want to get into a big flame war with you, obviously that's the furthest thing from what I want. Besides I like your recent br's. Furthermore I attacked your post, not your character and not you. So defend your post, not your character.
If you think that you can defend a post who's only goal is to flame as you yourself have said, and is meant to make a newcomer with some good stuff feel unwelcome, go ahead and try and I'll be happy to debate it with you.
I personally like both Jack9's stuff and traditional br's and I don't see why they shouldn't both be here. Better than creating some kind of rival site and having some kind of childish rivalry.
At any rate back to your post. The only things you defended from your original post are that traditional br's are more concise, and that you dont want to listen to to his fucking clueless commentary.
True maybe traditional brs are in general a lot more concise. Oh well. Concise doesn't alway mean better. If you thought you'd have summed up your whole reply into 1 paragraph with a couple sentences. Maybe you think it means better in terms of battlereporting. Thats fine that's your opinion, but I like to watch a whole game just as much as I like to read about what the author thinks is important. As for his fucking clueless commentary, well if you feel that way, fine, but there are varying qualities of battlereports as well. You can't condemn YRM's work because of some shit br that was released in the same hour, and by the same token you can't condemn all commentaries (because theoretically the YRM of commentating could appear in the future) just because of Jack9.
It seems that in general you're a good person so I don't want to dislike you, I merely objected to your post in particular (though not nearly as much as many of the other posts. I would say your post was a lot better than most) and to the general state of decay this community is in. I have been around it for over a year, and though I was never really in the center of it, I have read almost every 7+ report written here and commented on most of the ones I read, and also written a few br's myself. I have to say there was a time when this community was so much more vibrant and friendly. Now you, a relative newcomer (to the best of my knowledge) and a seemingly nice guy, seems to be proud of his first flame post and is well encouraged by the rest.
I wish some other old timer would show up and try to lighten everyone up, but since that doesn't seem to be happening I felt I had to say something. |
| #32 [c]Napoleic[87915] |
| proxy5.rdc1.bc.home.com |
And though I have to say I am very happy about all the good work that has sprung up around the battlereporting culture, I also think that Jack9 has a good point about it.
Do you really think br.com would even exist if the replay feature shipped with the original starcraft? I doubt it.
If battlereports were so above and beyond replays then br.com would be a lot more popular. As it is there has easily been less than a thousand regulars in its entire history. So obviously the rest of the starcraft community does not love brs as much as we do. Does that mean that everyone else is wrong and only we are right? |
| #33 the()vermind[87919] |
| user-2ivebhr.dialup.mindspring.com |
| well, there are more reasons than that for why br.com isnn't as popular as others. We only generaly accept some people, if someone get's a 1-4 on their first report, most stop trying, they leave because of flamers. Napoleic, you have a point, it's just that you're the only voice it seems that is sounding jack's cause. Reports take days-weeks-months to finish. This guy has released 3 "audio" br's in one day. It just won't stand in the community |

"If you think that you can defend a post who's only goal is to flame as you yourself have said, and is meant to make a newcomer with some good stuff feel unwelcome, go ahead and try and I'll be happy to debate it with you."
Oh, I'm not defending that.
"At any rate back to your post."
The main purpose of post #13 was to defend the existence of "traditional" battlereports. I think the idea that the old school battlereports have "no redeeming value", as Jack9 says, is totally ludicrous.
You continue on the basis that I am totally against the submission of these reports, when I don't find anything in #13 that does that at all, unless you pull more from the flame than was intended.
"Do you really think br.com would even exist if the replay feature shipped with the original starcraft? I doubt it."
Well, we have a difference in opinion there.
Comment #30's intention was to explain why I reacted how I did. I'm guessing that I shouldn't have added the sentence, "Thanks for making me out to be an ignorant flamer," as it did mildly cloud the point of the post. I was bitter, though.
"Furthermore I attacked your post, not your character and not you." This was based on that one quote from comment #30. You attacked the post on the basis that there was something in my post #13 that attacked him for submitting the report, when I was actually indignant of him suggesting that traditional BRs have no place anymore. I will continue to value them more than replays.
I just think you were putting words in my mouth when you said "CrackHeadJeb implies that Jack9 shouldn't post these here because he 'doesn't like his attitude'."

| I HAVE made traditional BRs before...long ago. As stated previously, I dont see any redeeming value to traditional BRs now that replays are out. This would qualify as opinion. An opinion many people share, but do not bother to express here...as it would be pointless and inflammatory. I am doing my best to offer an alternative and expand the scope of BRs as an art. I released 3 reports, not 4. This was to show off my style on a number of games. I have learned a lot from both feedback and introspection, as I was previously preoccupied with technical difficulties. From now on I will have to balance the quality of the game with the quality of the audio. I will do my best to make the replay unnecessary in order to enjoy the BR. |

Ok, that first sentence is a bitch to get over unto itself, but moving along to the second one. WRONG. How wrong?
THIS WRONG
Battlereporting is about presenting the game in an innovative and captivating writing style with pics being supplementary. Take a poll, or hell, look at this comment section. See how many people think it's the replay/pics and how many think it's the writing.
I mean, you could write a report about World War II, or you could use a documentary from the History Channel. Sure, that tape may work, but where's the originality?

Jack9,
I have no gripe over presenting replays with audio as a BR. What bugs me is your lack of instruction. Do I start the audio then load up SC or start the replay then jump out and fire up the audio, what gives? The second point I have is that 1.08 is not released yet. This means that for those of us that still get on Bnet and haven't upgraded, we are left out.
In other words, your BR's are not user friendly and that will be taken into account when/if they are rated.
Finally, responding to the value in traditional BR's comment, I feel a good BR is part report, part short story. The writing, when it is done well, complements the action displayed. Humor, narrative, plot (in some cases), style; these are what makes a BR so much more than just watching a game that has already been played. I read BR's because I like not only starcraft, but also literature, and your style takes that away and leaves me simply observing a game which I can do any time I want.

| jack, this idea of yours is not being well recieved for large numbers of reasons. I myself and personally against it, but I can live with it. Your opinions have the same value as mine (unless your president of the united states) so I can't just denounce these br's and flame you, like other people. However, I can provide good sufficient reasons for discontinuing this series. First off, this site is based completely on br's. Battlereporting is an art, and it may take days, weeks, even months to finish a br. Look at breeze, he still hasn't released no mercy 3, 7 months after the game. One could make these in the time the game took. There just isn't the flair of seeing pictures with big funny comments, animations, flash, 3d pictures. Second, the largest fear of the people in this community, deep in their heart (not everybody), is that replays will completely, and utterly reign supreme over br's. Thus, people will utterly flame and degrade anything that brings to the surface this fear (I"m speculating people, don't flame me for it). Last, it could take over an hour to watch a replay with an audio commentary (i know yours is designed for watching at 4x) while br's take less than 15 minutes. What do I think? Well, in my opinion replays will become a welcome addition to br's, with a link to them at the very end. There will also be stand alone replays, in their own section. Just remember, if something doesen't go well with the community, it's damn well best if you just stop that thing |

| Overmind, good points about paranoia. I'm only interested in the bottom line. It makes squat difference to me if Breeze makes his reports with hours, day, months, or minutes of work. All I care about in the end is how good is the final product. And I think that replays with commentary can be just as good as battlereports. If you think there is no art or talent to commentary then become a pro sports broadcaster. You shouldn't have any trouble if it takes no talent. |

Ahhh, but I love watching Sonics games, and THEN I read everything I can about it in the paper the next day as the people reporting the games generally have certain insights and reactions I had never considered.
