Well, the core of any battlereport is the text. "Backgrounds" and "Pics" rarely add any more than one point to someone's rating (two if they are exceptional). :o
A battlereport of getting your friend's Dreamcast to work online just didn't appeal to me too much, though. The writing wasn't biting enough (though it's a thin line between not being edgey enough and overdoing it) to hold my interest.
You have a great attention to detail, though. I liked the style of your first report, but I could even imagine you being a great fanfic writer.

Well, CHJ, you got about half of it. Pics shouldn't be a very strong foundation of battlereports, 'em whippersnappers they are. The fact of the entire Dreamcast bit is that it was a battle AGAINST tech support. I meant for it to basically be something you can relate to, and that many people had a certain brush with death(AKA Tech support) I worked with that. Go the Comment Whore I am! Lets get this sucker to a 100!
Oh, and my next story is based on the ever growing presence of plotholes from your average fanfic writer. Plus I get to make fun of Bush and gates, so it will get a 10 anyways, until the secret service tracks me down and whips my ass around their AK-47's... |

My bet would be that the raters just glance through it, and, if they don't see anything that catches their eye (snazzy graphics, great writing, or, face it, a familiar name) they just yawn and put it off until later. Then they get around to rating it when they've got a paper due or something and need an excuse to procrastinate. |

I didn't mean to come off so crass, but just because you flawlessly retold a real-life anecdote (I do love your attention to detail), that doesn't mean that you'll get a flawless rating. :P
I think it'd me more helpful to try to "stick your foot in the door" with a few traditional battlereports. I can tell that you wish to be known as a very creative battlereporter, but this is extremely weird as a battlereporting concept. And it doesn't appear that people are that receptive to it. I mean, you have 46 comments, but they're from about 8 different people. :(

Contrary to what my post may have indicated, I'm a pretty open-minded person. You could EASILY have changed my mind if you had told me something like, "I know Dagomar, and he worries a lot about the ratings and tries really hard to get them right."
I don't know the raters personally. I'm pretty ignorant about this site as a whole and the people on it. But the fact that the report two before this, a conventional and fairly decent battle report by lala..., has not been rated, while unconventional ones like Ling-erie's, Mick's, or the Star Wars one, were rated within a couple hours leads me to believe that the unconventionality of this report is not what keeps it from being quickly rated.

Again, I don't know the people involved very well (ie at all) so I could easily be wrong. But these are the impressions I get, and, very likely, they are the impressions of a lot of people who aren't in the "in" crowd here who plays in NoHunters every day and gets to know everyone. So, even if my beliefs are wrong, they would be worthwhile for you to refute. |

Well, the unconventional battlereports that you brought up (mick/()vermind/ling's) all had rating precedent. Mick's last NT report took days to report, same as Robert Frazer's historical br (yeah, yeah, it's a reach, but it's a close analogue to ()vermind's report), and Ling's report was easily not a battlereport.
I apologize to you, vincible, for assuming that you were closed-minded or something. I just get frustrated when people talk about rater bias just because it's a convenient excuse. There is no precedent for a report like this that I can remember, and Dagomar does take his position very seriously.

| CHJ I was kidding about the 10. I'd be personally surprised if I get a 4 for the quality. But I do think that there is a little favoritism from some of the raters to some battlereporters. I have done 4 conventional battlereports, so you know, including reporting Tsunami and Heartcutter(the only one ya did read), but I don't spend all day in ~NH since I deleted Starcraft for Diablo II. What I don't get however is while he might be agonizing over, dagomar had rated all above reports in hours, yet 24 hours have pasted since postinbg and no one here even bothered to glance through. Great, there goes my 10 for rater bashing...=p. |

Btw, I don't mean this as criticism of Dagomar (or any other rater), who as far as I can tell is a nice guy who makes an effort to post good, constructive criticism and praise for most reports. IF bias existed, and he rated some reports before others in a biased way (emphasize the "if") it would be totally understandable that he would look first at the reports he thinks he will enjoy. I realize raters aren't paid for this so of course I don't expect them to spend hours rating reports just as they come out. It's pro bono work so they have the right to do it at their own convenience.
Hope this clarifies my position. I think I was much too flippant in my original comment (#31), and I apologize for that. |

Also, let me add that in the last comment I was talking about the ORDER reports are rated. I don't think anyone could argue that the actual numerical ratings themselves are biased. They seem pretty consistent to me, from what I've seen. I often disagree with them but I'm pretty sure that's just because raters like different things than I do.

Yeah, I'll admit that that's an unusual occurrence. 9 times out of 10 that report would be rated by now. I'll concede that that happens occasionally (which is unfortunate since I try as much as possible to help out newer battlereporters), but it doesn't happen enough to cause worry imho.

| Same here Vincible. Its frustrating at times and its kinda discouraging. I know they got lives, but still its hard to appeal to the people early on. Dagomar does work way too hard, on brs and analyzing reports, especially if he isn't paid for giving us all so much help as he did. Plus, At least we're beating the hell outta Mick's comments page (34). Sorry to the raters (Cough Daggy) for being an ass, even if he didn't see previous comments.Eh. I'm almost finished with my next fanfic. Hope it comes off better. |

Erm, sometimes I leave some reports for other raters because I have work to do and only have time for a br like Mick's :(. Anyway, I read this now. It's good. Very original!
I'd actually suggest some html for this . . . something like a black background and white text . . . I do find that much easier to read. The story was a little crazy but still not hard to follow . . . I'm going to rate this a 7, though 7.4 would be better ;). |
