Kane, I didn't say that this story was ABOUT greece, only that it was dedicated to greek gamers... but... now that we're on the subject...
What is your understanding of the situation in greece?
My understanding is that the bureaucrats responsible for enforcing the existing legislation (pertaining to internet gambling) were too lazy or too stupid to define the difference between a person paying money in a public venue to gamle online, and a person playing tetris by themselves in the privacy of their own home.

I just wonder how long it will be until the 21st century equivilant of speakeasys will be opening in athens... with gevernment workers collecting a rake-off no doubt... two weeks?

#30 LuckyNewbie:P[126224]
dialup-65.59.23.190.Dial1.Denver1.Level3.net
and since someone said how detailed that was the last time i said it, i'll add my reasoning

1) you said immigrant, not illegal immigrant. if you truly believe legal immigrants are the reason for high taxes, and are to a man stupid and worthless, you're a conceited prick who buys the theory that all things wrong in this country is because of foreigners. although you're probably right (this land was fine before columbus), i'm assuming here you mean illegal immigrant.

2) immigrants aren't taxing the taxpayer, the government is. don't like it, vote for someone to cut taxes or change the healthcare system, which is the only thing i can see an illegal immigrant draining upon.
#31 LuckyNewbie:P[126227]
dialup-65.59.23.190.Dial1.Denver1.Level3.net
3) "worthless, stupid" immigrants. not only are you stereotyping because of the few immigrants you've seen in your neck of the woods, you're wrong. even the worst illegal immigrant is useful as a construction laborer, field worker, and other jobs for "undocumented workers." then you go on to assume that because they speak "indian talk, asian talk, or mexican" they're as stupid as anyone could be. not only are you a motherfucking ignorant asshole but an arrogant one as well, not interested in finding out how smart an illegal immigrant is because it's just convenient to label all those "worthless" people as stupid.
#32 LuckyNewbie:P[126228]
dialup-65.59.23.190.Dial1.Denver1.Level3.net
4) although the constitution says nothing about ensuring open-immigration (i dont think?), this country has been and will be a melting pot of people from around the world, regardless of what temporary laws are set up. the quota system of the know-nothings, the gentlemen's agreement, and other big laws have not and cannot stop immigrants from coming to this country, legality regardless. this is america, where the streets are paved with gold. while western europe has changed into a "beacon of democracy" itself, the united states still is the land of opprotunity for the unwashed masses. east europe, latin america, east asian are the biggest immigrants. how many natural citizens have irish, italian, german or russian blood, the former "worthless, stupid" people?

so, in conclusion, you are stupid. and i'd appreciate it if you could stop talking.

interesting slice of life, but the concept, while brilliant, was not developed. Edited and composed with a little more care to direction would have made this an exceptional peice. Also the emphasis on mergers -- every single company mentioned was a combination of 2 or more current companies -- was somewhat irritating after a while. I think that people got the message long before the story ended.

If it wasn't rushed it would have been a rival to some of Dref's works.

1. Great BR, deserves its score.

2. The government has done infinitely more harm than corporations have. A corporation can't tax you to death, or throw you in jail for victimless offenses, or send you off to die in a pointless war. Ditto for immigrants.

3. I agree on America's superiority to most of Europe. More freedom with your income, more free speech, freedom of movement and no draft (yet). That, and we're not surviving on the corpse of our former greatness, refusing to realize our reduced role in the world, unlike France and Britain.

Lucky: I agree with you 100% as long as you include some "integration" with your "immigration".... I notice a disturbing tendency nowadays of excusing or even encouraging a lack of integration all under the rubric of "multi-culturalism".... we are supposed to be multi-cultural, but the only way we can succeed in doing so is through our common culture -- rule of law, representative govt, english language, western ethics.

Just look how successful nations that lack these qualities are at being multicultural... take the middle east, take africa, take the former soviet union...

I'd pick Europe over USA any day :(
Even though the tax is close to 50% in Denmark :o
Not to mention the 80%+ tax when you're making the big money. But the important thing is that noone gets left behind, which can be abused, but will always be better than having a bunch of poor people, which would only generate crime etc.
IMO the biggest "fault" with USA is its enourmeous army budget. Several million dollars for a F-16? That really makes me wonder how much good the goverment coulda done with those money.
Another thing, USA pretty much suck at foreign relations. It doesn't get better when they turn down environtment agreements that the entire remaining industialized world has agreed upon :(

Nice concept, very creative. Sort of a cross between ShadowRun and _Brave New World,_ as bizarre as that sounds. As it is, it's rather undeveloped for a story, but a little editing could change that. And the writing is good; I just noticed one sentence that needs fixing because of an extraneous word on the end:

"Conflict seems imminent given worsening business relations between AOL-Micro-Sony-Soft and Blizz-Tendo-Soft worsen. "

A message to the Europeans: America doesn't suck because it has less of a social safety net than europe.
A message to the Americans: Europe doesn't suck because it is more socialized.

If you people would study your history you'd realize that both the US and Europe have about 200 years of history that have shaped their current political and economic policy.

Europe has 200 years of evidence that poor people cause social problems. The revolutions of the 1830-40s, the anarchists and marxists of the late 19th century, the socialists and fascists of the early 20th century... after wwii, it was in western europe's (and coincidently America's) best interest to ensure that no one was poor and wandering the streets... if only to reduce the threat of soviet subterfuge...

[continued]
#61 funnymarx[126453]
p-proxy-1-int0.net.wisc.edu
[continuing]
America has 200 years of evidence that poor people expand the country and make it a better place. Up until wwi, if you were poor, you went west... that enabled our nation to develop the entire width of the continent.

Now that there is no longer a red menace, nor a western frontier, europe will gradually shift towards more free markets, and america will gradually shift towards more socialization, until we both meet somewhere in the middle... at least that's my prediction...

excellent points Funnymarx. Your theories on the evolution of societies are very much in line with my own. Economical madness, IBashar? The US has an economic areas in two key areas over Europe, the first being more immigrants (which supply the demand for cheap labor as well as add needed technological expertise), and the second being less repressive regulations and corporate taxes.

ZerG~LinG: I wasn't really serious about my "corpses of their former greatness" comment, but I've developed a really hostile attitude towards Europeans lately because of their attitude towards U.S. actions. For example, I oppose an attack on Iraq, because Iraq has not attacked the United States, and Europeans oppose it only if the U.S. goes it alone, making it seem like warmongering is OK as long as you get your friends to do it with you. <continued>
#66 RudyJustFailed[126563]

That, and seeing a photo of a French parent dressing up their child as a Palestinian suicide bomber made me sick to my stomach. Don't get me wrong; I oppose a lot of, if not most, of what Sharon's Israel is doing. But to insinuate that suicide bombers are in any way justified in murdering innocents is stomach churning.

Oh, and the Kyoto Treaty is utter bullshit. Spending 3.5 trillion dollars on a plan that won't cut down on CO2 emissions enough to make any noticeable difference in order to combat a problem that hasn't even been PROVEN (global warming, contrary to popular belief, is not concrete scientific fact). I'm glad Bush opposes it.
#67 ZerG~LinG[126571]

Now you brought up Israel, it all comes back to me :o
How can US support a country that kills innocent people every day and pretty much fucks with the human rights etc.
But you're right on the french parents tho, that made me quite sick too :(.

I have to admit I don't know that much about the Kyoto Treaty, but I'm pretty sure that global warming is a proven fact. Actually im dead sure.

Furthermore, were not just talking the Kyoto Treaty, I'm just infuriated everytime I learn that the US goverment has more or less ignored a international meeting of importance :(

SiG: I agree :( And now were there, US should cut drastically down on any nuclear/military expenses.
#68 RudyJustFailed[126572]
66-214-216-69.rno-cres.charterpipeline.net
ZerG~LinG: My proposal with Israel; make foreign aid voluntary. That way, people in the United States who disapprove of their actions don't have to be party to what they're doing over there. I think both sides need to chill the fuck out, but what do you expect when the leaders of either side are a terrorist and a war criminal?
#69 RudyJustFailed[126573]
66-214-216-69.rno-cres.charterpipeline.net
Oh, and the Kyoto Treaty would cut carbon dioxide emissions to the levels they were in 1990. And as for global warming, a professor at MIT named Richard Lindzen called it "a mostly political issue with little scientific basis." Only 5% of carbon dioxide emissions are caused by humans, and we're in the middle of a warming trend between ice ages anyway. Remember, for 90% of the past 100,000 years most of North America, Europe and Asia was covered by a mile-thick sheet of ice. Besides, warming of the planet means a longer growing season, which means less hunger.

As for the U.S. military, I agree. I say Bush issues an executive order withdrawing every last American soldier and piece of equipment to U.S. soil (except Afghanistan, until al-Qaeda has been destroyed there) and cuts the Pentagon's budget in half. The U.S. is not the Roman Empire.

remember, there is no common morality around the world. what is horrifying to one culture can be acceptable and even justifiable to another. heck, it doesnt even have to be different cultures, just look at shooting/bombing abortion clinics: acceptable to some (very few?) people, abhored by the rest

on israel -
its obvious we're close friends with Israel: they are a stable (for the most part) country in an area not known for being stable. we were buds with an oppressive shah in Iran until the ayatollah came along (which is why they hate us). why do we care about the middle east? to sum it up in one word: oil. although it doesn't make sense to ally oneself with the only enemy of the area, i'm sure theres a good reason... plus the pres. wants the jewish vote more than the muslim one

bush isn't enforcing it because it isnt scientifically proven, or because it could be natural phenomena [sic?], its because it will be a real bitch of a law to lay down and pay for. even though 3.5 trillion dollars is probably a horribly wrong figure (i'd bet the barn it's the total loss in production, given the technique wasn't changed), it would still be a significant payment.

I give it a 9. My highest possible score IMO for a regular piece of writing. To be a 10 it has to push the envelope of technique and technology (Javascript, graphics, etc) like YRM or CBs stuff. This is a excellent short story, which I think could make a great long story. I found it creative, novel, readable, and made me ponder. If you ask me to name the proudest distinction of Americans, I would choose- because it contains all the others- the fact that they were the people who created the phrase "to make money." No other language or nation had ever used these words before; men had always thought of wealth as a static quantity- to be seized, begged, inherited, shared, looted or obtained as a favor. Americans were the first to understand that wealth has to be created. - Ayn Rand
