Nice work... I've never played the game, but I can see how things work by your descriptions; an enjoyable read and break from SC reports.
#2 Persian-POW (spider-wa064.proxy.aol.com)[9102]
Good report Praetor, two in one day I see. This just gets me more excited about AOE2:Age of Kings. Too bad you weren't able to take pictures as they probably would have helped me visualize things better since I'm not too familiar with the game. I have a question about the game though, what were your allies doing?
#3 Dev (208-25-63-231.stk.jps.net)[9105]
Oooh, nice change of pace. Good report... I felt I could actually understand bits of the strategy by reading that, having never played AoE.
#4 SuperGeneral (cr732571-a.pr1.on.wave.home.com)[9107]
Great report again. People like you refresh this page with different games and different aspects of Sc battlereports. I would do this but my other RTS games suck. :[

#5 MikeyMonty (spider-wk011.proxy.aol.com)[9112]
Cool Praetor, some variety. I love the ancient setting of AoE but have trouble with the game play. If they could somehow turn starcraft into an ancient civilization type game I would be hooked for life.
#6 Fractal_Wave (proxy4.gvcl1.bc.home.com)[9120]
I rememeber when I played AoE 24 / 7 on the zone....
Then I got StarCraft
=)

Good report of a good game Praetor. Nice to see a little variety...

Will AoK be better than CnC 2? Debate please
;)

All the best,
Fractal_Wave

Nice to see you all like it. Persian-POW, didn't think of it that way, but I suppose it WAS two in one day. Considering the last part of PL:Chronicles was done in the wee hours of the morning =).

As for my allies, after telling each other where we were, not much happened. Eventually one of them said, "damn, well look at my allies" and left the game. The other one was still alive when I left. However, I don't think our team was too bad, as I never saw any of Yellow's allies either =).

#8 Mark4 (strangers.bragg.army.mil)[9125]
Cool. Now I just have to get some TS players to start writing reports here.
#9 YourRoleModel (relay.atinc.com)[9131]
"Look at my teammates?" and left? It sounds like he considered you the newbie partner we all know and love in Brood War... the one that has 2 SCVs on minerals and one on gas while using the fourth to build a barracks 15 minutes into the game. Still, it seems to me like you did well.

From reading your report, it sounds like AoE has some of the annoying elements that Starcraft or Warcraft had in that it was beneficial to build a huge amount of one unit type and suffer no adverse consequence.

Now at least, even if you mass hydras or play goon craft, you need supporting reavers or templar or lurkers and lings.

I had a StarWars strategy realtime/turn based game (Rebellion) that was cool for a month but completely impractical to play with another living person.

Blizzard should come out with a sequel to Warcraft II that takes a step forward in graphics, adds a fourth or even fifth race (maybe divisions among the clans or humans/elves etc...). Diablo-like spells could be the province of the mana users (guardian, golem, firewall and other tactical type spells). Race balance issues would be a tough nugget to crack, but with enough unit-type counters, it could be done.

Wow, that was a nice report. I could understand what was going on even though I've never seen a picture of this game before. Like YRM says though, it sounds like one-unit wonders rule. But then again, SC used to be like that back in 1.00. (marine, hydralisk, zealot) :)
#11 The-Dark-0ne (proxy4.gvcl1.bc.wave.home.com)[9139]
Hey Mark i have tiberian sun i will write a few reports the only reason i didn't is because i thought this was a starcraft exclusive site.
#12 Johnny_Vegas (staff-8.ahnet.net)[9141]
Rock on! I loved reading this. I have Age of Empires, but never really got into it. I played it once online and got slaughtered by a million catapult ships from the nearby ocean. That game has a lot of neat qualities though. Best thing about it is, the resource gathering method, that just kicks ass. Hunting lion for food... Mining rock and gold.. etc.. I'm going to play this game when I get home! Hey Praetor gimme your ICQ number and we can hook up some games of AOE.
#13 .Praetor (port-sac27.cwo.com)[9147]
Not currently using ICQ Johnny =). I'll send you it when I get back to college. Multiplayer isn't that fun, it's sort of like CnC:RA, except there's more than one unit you can make a billion of. And some people tower in.

YRM, I may be a newbie partner in AoE, I wouldn't know if I was =). On the other hand, I got third in score (yellow was first, he probably had two fronts).

YRM, I so agree with you on War3. Personally, I think if they sunk time into it, they could make it the grand master of all RTS-games.

Four races, Human, ElfDwarf, TrollGoblinOgre, Orc. Story is interesting, the Orcs break away from the Ogre 'enforcer' tyranny Gul'Dan forced on them, Humans go religious, but opressivly so, the Elves and dwarves connect with Nature, and the Troll alliance is barely surviving.

What I thought of for gameplay is several different types of melee units, some more useful later than beginning. Essentialy, each race would have one or 2 cavalry units, footmen, two types of archers, and line fighters.

By line fighters I mean phalanx, pikemen, and legionaries, who do well fighting in groups and can form a line, unlike common melee paradigms in games today.

Archers would differ, like the elves would have the long range, but weak attack. They would be augmented by dwarven slingers, whose lead bullets do a lot of damage. Similar to the archerspearmen thing in Warcraft one. Also, I think that the town halll unit would produce the basic fighting units. Like for the elvesdwarves, the town hall makes a peasant and an archer. For the humans, a peasant pikeman. For the orcs a grunt.. etc.

Technology additions could be awesome. First of all, high ground advantage. Not only does high ground help block shots, but missile units on top get better range than those below. Cats and ballistas not affected, of course. Day and Night cycling is a must. I envision a five-minute cycle that doesn't help any race, but particular units. Like wolfraiders and elves do better at night, but dwarves and ogres get slaughted.

What exites me most is something I realized when facing hordes of chariot archers in AoE. Differing ground. The ground being traversed should affect battles, like rocky ground would hinder cavalry and make it largly ineffective. On grassy plains, this is obviously not the case =). Forests would also be great. Raiding parties could sneak through them, but a surprise factor would be evident. Great for raiding peons chopping lumber. I still wonder if a sniper move for archers could be done. It would have to be something like they get free hits, but cannot run away.

God, I think too much. I swear, if War3 is not Blizz's next project to announce, I'm going to have to send them all a professional-type suggestion manuscript.

That's gonna be one hell of a comment. Oh well, thanks for getting my juices running YRM!.

I too dream of War3. And how about gnomish gliders, that can drop "bombs" below?

How about recruiting mounts for units, that make them faster and harder to kill? Orcish worg riders? (Worg's are huge evil warthog type things).

War3 with elevations like in starcraft would rock. Basically if you take starcraft's cool features, add them into war2, and then add some cool units you've got yourself a winner.
#15 YourRoleModel (relay.atinc.com)[9174]
Strangely, I envision the races much like .Praetor. To combat the "all powerful" ogre-type unit, spells that reflect damage or otherwise use the enemies power against him would be concocted.

Summoned armies of Gollums, spells to break the control of that army, assasins, spy "peon" units that you could build of other races that would adopt the color of the race they mingled with until you selected them or they attacked you. Dwarven burrowing, much like nydus canals... Airborn Blimp troop transports, new water units like Krakkens or WhiteWhales, elementals, highly effective upgrades...

Attacks that are not 100% guaranteed to hit... maybe the % goes up with each unit killed by THAT unit. So you'd want to keep your units with high kills alive. (difficulty of unit killed would affect, and killing your own or friendly units wouldn't affect) Maybe the ToHit % goes from 30% to 90%... with a dodge % going from 0% to 10%... so many ideas...

In AOE you can always build another town center if your original one is destroyed. Furthermore you can build it with multiple peasants (providing you have the resources - I believe 200 wood, but I could be misremembering) to get it up in a short period of time. The main disadvantage of losing your town center is if you are upgrading at the time, otherwise it doesn't matter much.

One of AOE's huge weaknesses is that lumber is massively available, most buildings are built only from lumber, the buildings have lots of hit points and are quick to build. This all means that it generally takes more time for the enemy to destroy your starting town than it does for you to build up a better town elsewhere. On a large map it should be almost impossible to take out a veteran player - although in 3vs3 this may be less of a problem.

If you're being overwhelmed then simply run peasants away and rebuild. A storage pit only costs 120 wood - so you can rebuild from 1 peasant and 120 wood in the bank if given time.

Oh yes - if he has to attack along a peninsula then get a navy. Boats do a lot of damage for one unit (you're only allowed 50 units total) and only take wood to build and are repairable.

It's a good idea to learn your races - some of them have huge early game economic and military bonusses. Assyrians and Yamato spring to mind.

As to the guy leaving - you know that you can see the power scores of the relative civs during the game? He probably saw yours was low (if you were an age behind with few peons) and concluded, perhaps unfairly, that you sucked.

Strom.

I used to play AoE all the time. Great report. Now the CD gathers dust.

New subject: I loaded C&C TS last night and it all seemed to go smoothly through the loading and the intro video clips. Then as the game started it froze and did this again and again in the same place. Help! any ideas?
#18 PhunTyme (bis184.buckeyeweb.com)[9181]
Alright I'm not the only one who played AoE. Though I haven't touched it in months I feel it calling me... damn you Praet you awakened an old hate/love :P
#19 PhunTyme (bis184.buckeyeweb.com)[9182]
Oh and to all the WAr3 comments I heard as a teeny tiny rumor (don't quote me if I'm wrong, though I know you guys will) that it'll be kinda like UO but still a RTS game. Like
the games one huge world instead of a thousand million seperate games (like every other RTS game) and whatever you create is permanent, you could make HUGE kingdoms! Anyways I thought it was a cool idea... let the flames roll in.
#20 YourRoleModel (relay.atinc.com)[9187]
That'd be great. They'd have to come up with some way to prevent a few people from controlling and knocking everyone out of having any fun at all.

Perhaps there would be thousands of such, worlds, and they'd be reset every two months or so. Development and battles would have to be MUCH slower. Massive lag would be a problem even worse than in Ultima Online, where you only transmit information on one character.

It'd be cool if you started with a role playing character, and upon reaching a certain level, you could gain a Lordship where you'd build and control armies of "weaker than player character type" npcs... So after months and months of gaming, you might be able to become a "dungeoun master" and have a larger affect on the land, including player friends that help or hurt your cause...

I know the game that would rock the most.

Pong 2

Prove me wrong! Can't can ya? punk.
#22 Cashew-of-Doom (sktnsk01d05160120.sk.sympatico.ca)[9327]
My thoughts on war3 or sc2, although war3 would rock because it's fantasy =)
Strafing: air units should have this as a given.
Moving and attacking simultaneously!
Many other I've thought of but can't remember...
Another thing, for some fun, get nethack it's the best rouge style dungeon crawl in ASCII ever made (seriously, it's fun =))

Wow, reading over this W3 speculation is interesting / amusing.

And good game too, even though I have never played that game.
