Setting:

I finally persuaded my roommates to play BW. Since there were three of us, we decided to include a computer to prevent those 2v1's that always seem to happen in 3FFA. Unfortunately, I shot myself in the foot on that one (explained later). We all randomed, and I got toss, which can either be my best or worst race depending upon my mood, the time of day, position of the planets, and ratio of oxygen to nitrogen in my room. I knew the play styles of all my opponents, and I figured the computer was the most likely to hit me early. So I did the normal 7 pylon, 8 gate, 9 gate build that I open most games with. Since this game was for fun I decided to go Gateway only on combat units.

Early:

I sent my 10th peon scouting clockwise, and found Bunny about 2 seconds after my first gateway beamed in, and discovered he was terran. I put up a Assimilator and decided to go for DT, figuring that at least on of my other opponents would be Terran or toss(oops). Continued searching with the probe, and found the comp just to my left, sadly, the probe died due to my inattention. I knew Bahamut was either top-left or middle-left. I built a pylon at Bunny's natural at one point to try to cannon, but he found it before it beamed and I canceled. Somehow, I saved the probe. I wasn't building in any particular hurry, and had 3 gates, a forge, cannon or two gaurding most of the base, and 4-5 zealots/2-3 goons sitting around for defense when my archives beamed. Sent my first 3 DT at his base. He had some turrents up, but only on one side. I ran around behind his base, taking out 2 supply depots, an academy, his comsat, and half his peons before I ran into the range of his turrents. Kept half of his minerals clean for a while, and killed several turrents in progress before he took them out (I wasn't really paying attention). After this I pretty much ignored him. Sometime along here, one of Bahamuts lings scouted my base. After smacking myself, I switched over to HARD goon pumping. I took the node just south of me, but somehow I missed the small pass that led to my natural. I had about 6 gates in my main base and about 20 goons/10 zeals, fully upgraded attack and range. The computer hit me a couple times, but nothing too severe. I found the natural, which the computer had taken, and sent in a force of goons and zeals to take it out, I took this expansion too.

Mid:

I had seen hide nor hair of Bahamut, which I knew was bad. The computer and I scurmished quite a bit, as I had taken all the expansions on the left side of the map (with about 5 DT blocking Bunny from expanding (held him the entire game for some reason). I took another expansion from the computer, continueing to pump out goons from my now 9 gates in base, and a couple more at expansions.

At one point, I sent a force of 12 goons into a creep feild of the computers. I saw a defiler pop up, toss a dark swarm in front of my goons. I sent the zealots forward to stop any lings, and what do I see? A swarm of hydra coming from the south. About to fall over laughing, I sent the goons into the cloud and took no damage from the several dozen hydras. A short time later, I start noticing massive flocks of scource flying overhead. The only thing I had in the air were transports and observers, so I didn't care much. Still kinda funny to see several bloody streaks appear over my goons every 30 seconds.

I launced an attack on one of the computers expansions, and no sooner do I commit do I hear the dreaded words "nuclear launch detected". I checked my invading army, my tech buildings, and the expansion closest to Bunny, but didn't see the red dot. Turns out the nuke was on that expansion, targeting my nexus (the nexus was in an odd place because I place the initial pylon for cannons off by one square). The nuke took only half of my peons out there. Almost immediately after, my invading army folded and the comp charged that expansion. A rush of goons from my main supported the beleagered defenders and saved the expansion, with my nexus at 1 sheild and 3 hp. A bit close, I'd say.

I heard a nuke launch, but it wasn't at me. A few minutes later I heard another nuke, but I got to my main just in time to see the ghost die to my cannons (Bunny said the ghost didn't pathfind like he thought it would). At this point, I sent the five templar into Bunny's base and razed half of it to the ground (he still hadn't put up adequate turrents), including two command centers and most of his troop production. Apparently, the computer and I had prevented him from expanding. He was more or less out of the game.

I dropped four goons above the Comps expansion and started picking off drones mining. The Comp sent 4 overlords to the cliff, 2 landed, the rest ran. Using 4 goons and some fancy dancing, I pick off about 6 hydra and 6 zergling with two goons left (both in yellow). Seconds later, those two goons killed two mutes, leavin one goon in the red. I wrote him off as a loss, but he was there for the rest of the game taking pot shots and overlords as they flew by.

End:

I wiped that base with about 16 zealots and 24 goons, and took it. I now had about half of the map taken, and the computer had lost most of it's expansions. I had about 6 expansion, but only two of them had minerals left. I sent an exploratory force across the south side of the map (noting that someone had finished Bunny), and found one of Bahamut's expansions. The force (4 zealots and 6 goons) was slaughted by hydras and cracklings. I sent the only two reavers I had (I was playing gate only, but some habits are hard to break). I dropped the reavers just outside of the base and walked them in. The first shots killed the sunken, the second salvo killed all eight of the hydras and assorted lings. I was jumping out of my seat screaming taunts and obsenities down the hall at Bahamut as a pack of muties flew in. I don't know how but I loaded the reavers and got out of there before my shuttle was destroyed. Two seconds later, a horde of ultralisks swarmed across the top of the map and took out my north center expansion and choke point.

I moved everything I had to my main to protect the secondary choke, but my forces were too scattered. I used everything I had, dropping storming most of my base trying to hurt those things. I fought off the first wave, but withing minutes, a second wave came in. 30-40 ultras can take out about anything on the ground you can throw at them. About this time, I realized I had only one expansion left with resources, 8k min and 5k gas in the bank, very few forces, and no tech tree. I refused to go down. I sent everything I had to my last expansion with min (the worst one I could have chosen for a last stand actually), built a cy core before my last gate went down, dropped 5 stargates, and a fleet beacon. Now that I think about it, carriers were the dumbest thing I could've done. Should've gone coursairs w/ dweb. Anyway, got off 8 carriers mostly loaded and started wandering the map. The computer's swarms of scourge (remember the pointless scourge from the early game) now wiped half my carriers before I even launced the first interceptor. I took out one of bahamut's expansions, and about 10 overlords before my carriers died to mass scourge. With 4 mineral, a couple hundred gas, and about 8 buildings, I surrendered. When I quit, I had mined more resources by about 10%, and killed about 3 times as many enemies as Bahamut.

Afterwords:

Bahamut hadn't been attacked the entire game. Apparently, the computer launced a couple early attacks on him, and then ignored him. He took the entire left side and bottom. He coverted all of his peons into colonies to free up control.

Bunny has only been playing the campaigns recently, and has only played BW a couple times. He got sandwiched between my and the comp, and couldn't expand.

Lessons:

  • Dark Templar are worthless against a zerg who knows how to use overlords.
  • Carriers are useless against a zerg with gas and a spire.
  • High Templar are worthless against ultralisks.
  • Don't toy with a computer opponent. Just kill him. Saves time and money.
  • Even after Bahamut cleared the board, taking credit for my, Bunny's, and the comp's demise, I 700 kills compared to his 300 and a few k more on resources spent. Goons and zealots alone are cost effective against zerg ground, but reaver backup would have been *more* cost effective.
  • In a ffa, the person who can expand the most with the least engagement will win.
