Yesterday I challenged Johnny to a best of three games series. Despite his cowardly evasions and "The e-mail server must have been down, I'm not ignoring you." excuses, he finally agreed to play me. Johnny had chosen the first map, forsaken realm, and died an ugly, brutal death at the hands of my protoss jugernaut.

The second match we both agreed to fight on Lost Temple. I began the game with a slight feeling of trepidation. Johnny was bit quiet but I could almost see the bloodthirsty gleam in his eye get redder with every taunt I launched. Despite my nagging feeling of doom, I elected to go random, thinking I could always make it up in the third match.

Unfortunately, I drew terran, my worst race. I was fairly confident my toss could take him, experience had shown he has a hard time with some of my better toss moves. I've won both the zerg games I played against him, allthough they were very close. But terran... it wasn't looking good. I had the bottom start and Johnny got the top.

I went with a barracks/gas/academy/barracks strategy. My opening comment of "Now you face the swarm" was quickly discovered to be misleading when Johnny's SCV jetted into my base. I went for a factory, then quickly expanded to my natural. I know Johnny tends to attack a bit late and decided to take advanatage of this. I comsated and found two factories in his base. My defense to this point had been all marines and medics. I quickly made a vulture and a bunker to counter the vultures I knew would soon approach. They did come, but on seeing the bunker they ran past, taking damage, while my stimmed marines chased them. None of my marines actually were in the bunker, and the stimmed marines and my vulture ended the threat with only one marine lost to his five vultures.

I went for a second factory and began producing tanks. Comsat revealed he was low on troop count, and I decided to try my luck at his base. I sent a vulture ahead to recon, running into an enemy vulture. It traded shots, then I brought it back and repaired it. I sent it out once more and it quickly finished its weakened enemy. I'm not a bright man though, and I didn't remember vultures don't set off mines =[. My six tank and eight marine force lost a marine and two tanks before arriving at Johnny's base. I sent in a marine and he died to tank blasts. I planned on using his red splash mark to set my tanks at, but unfortunately, mines were spotting for the tanks. My tanks could not get close without coming under fire. I tried to attack anyway, but the uphill advanatage and the first shot advantage killed my tanks before I could kill more than one of his. One tank remained from my force. The marines died in a futile uphill assault as one spider mine destroyed half the force.

To recover from this debacle, I elected to expand once more. I floated a command center to the lower right island.
I also got three starports. I sent my first dropship with three marines and a SCV to secure the ledge above my natural expansion. The SCV was half done with the bunker when Johnny's force of two tanks and several marines with goliaths arrived. I fled my SCVs to the middle of the map for some reason known only to my panicked mind, and made another three dropships. When these were complete, I countered this attack with a five tank/6 marine/2 medic drop on the ledge. I destoyed his force, but had only three marines and three tanks left. I left the tanks there and sieged them above the entrance to the base.

The next offensive move was again Johnny's. He had comsated my island expansion and dropped four goliaths from a Dmatrixed dropship. These goliaths tore apart my three defending marines and all the SCVs before I dropped in two tanks and sieged them, eliminating the goliaths. My comsats revealed Johnny had expanded to the right start point and its natural, along with the upper left island. I was feeling the pressure. Johnny tried a tank assault on my front door for his next move. He locked down the two tanks sitting next to my front bunker, but the four tanks on the cliff to either side of the entrance repelled his assult. I started making BCs from all three startports. Johnny tried to nuke a few times, always foiled by my comsats and tanks, as well as one handy science vessel. His repeated assaults wore down my tank defense, eventually knocking all of my defending tanks out. I had twelve 3/3 BCs at this point. Johnny came in the front again with goliaths and ghosts, locking down some BCs and attacking the others. His forces lost more than I did each time , but they kept coming back.

My fingers were itching for psi storm like an addict for his next hit of crack. I loaded up a dropship with 2 SCVs and six medics and launched my BC fleet to the natural expansion of the right start point. I quickly rolled over the expansion, but retreated rather than face the horde of incoming goliaths I spotted. I did engage and kill two valkeries on the way back. Before my repairs from my foray were even halfway complete, Johnny, saying "Damn this supply limit," attacked with about 48 goliaths and several ghosts. I shift queued my attacks and used the medics from the dropship to restore all the BCs he lockdowned, but the basic truth is that about two goliaths fell for every BC that went down. Everyone who can do simple math knows the rest. His eight factories rallied to my base and I was the one "facing the swarm", exactly as I had bragged he would be at the start. To add insult to injury, he dropped a few nukes on my defenseless supply depots and uttered a few choice taunts. With only my island left, I conceded the match and prepared for the final game.

Lessons learned:

o Don't random to terran against Johnny =p.

o Johnny likes to mine the whole map, which gives him great recon and discourages expansions.

o Never go all one unit. If I kept up my tank production I would have been much less vulnerable to the goliath swarm.

o Range upgraded goliath own BCs like.....well, like Johnny owned me =p.
