When I read one of AQD3's latest report and he spoke of 'not giving up' I suddenly remembered a game played 2 months ago and I would like to share the story.

Terran VS Terran on Lost Temple

After taking a couple of beers with my friends we decided to fool around on the battle-net. We created three characters to play with and promised we would use them only when we had taken a few drinks (or alot ;) I played the first game with my name [A-laget]Grogg. It was a typical melee 2v2 on hunters. After scouting my opponents and seeing their build orders, I started chanting 'Carriers suck', 'See, carriers can't even take on 20 templars', 'Oh, noooooo a carrier!!!!','Yeah, baby, carrier slaughter' which I might add completely annoyed my opponents (who where building carriers) and made my partner laugh and realize that carriers truly suck =)

After having a blast, I drank some more beers while watching my friends defeat some battle-net newbies.

Then it was my turn again and my friends prompted that I should play a ladder game. First I didn't wanna ruin my score with my old character, but immediately realized that my characters score had already been ruined along time ago from map hackers. (If your about to win a game your get a draw or at best, loose connection to battle.net, if you are about to lose a game you get a loss, adding up you get a rediculous result). Nonetheless, I joined a '1065+ lost temple' game.

Where did we start?

First I wanted to play zerg or toss but since my friends knew my worst race they convinced me to select terran. My opponent (Sorry to say, but two months makes you forget ascii chars =) choosed random. And after explaining my drunk state and that he should surrender immediately we exchanged gl's and the countdown began.

My starting position was mid right and I used a experimental build order which gives, if done properly 8-16 less minerals and a much quicker first marine than the standard depot->barrack build order. However I don't recommend this one against another terran ;)

9 barrack
10 depot
10 gas
academy
depot
barrack
depot
factory

I experiment often with various build orders and seldom invent a tactic until I know what the opponent is doing (especially when i'm drunk =). My scout was too chicken to run up a ramp with a bunker behind it, so I was forced to place a radar in his base revealing two early factories.

One of my friends mumbled 'tank push'...

As for my self, I expanded to the top positions second natural mineral only expansion, and teched really high, really quick not realizing the imminate danger despite of my wise friend. After the c&c at my expansion was finished, I found out that I needed more gas so I lifted the c&c and moved it to the top left island.

The fat lady sings

Then he came, ten tanks accompanied by atleast one control group of marines. He sieged the tanks placed a radar and instantly wiped out every fragment of defence I had stationed at my ramp. My forces at that time was two tanks, three ghosts, one wraith and around 10 marines. Having a large stockpile of minerals, low gas, only two barracks, one factory and one starport, I suddenly realized I played like a newbie and that I just lost this game.
The tanks unsieged and moved up the ramp, I quickly locked the first tank with a ghost, blocking the rest from coming up, then my tanks moved closer and sieged. As fast as humanly possible I queue units in my buildings, sending my svc's to mass build barracks and to repair damaged buildings. During this time my opponent hasn't played bad either, he somehow manages to kill my tanks, moves his damaged force up the ramp, and slowly but safe starts to get a foothold up there despite of several lockdowns and harrassing wraiths. His arclite cannons wipes out half my base.

I typed 'GG' and my opponent replied with the same.

Then by some miracle, my barracks pumping marines actually gives result. The damaged tanks starts to explode one by one, by brute marine force. Newly produced tanks of my own adds up and wipes out the remains of his force.

I typed 'heh' and my opponent replied with a poetic 'grr'

Knowing that he has map control, the advantage of not being drunk and the fact that half my base is in ruins and his base is intact almost makes me concede.

Ah..What the heck, I'll continue anyway

Having the island expansion as my main income I know I must seek new expansions if i'm gonna take this guy so I sent an svc to the mid top expansion. Being the typical map control gay, sorry guy, he quickly finds this one out and promptly trashes it with a few marines. To counter this mean act, I send another svc to the mid bottom expansion to build another c&c. Meanwhile in my base I have teched a little more, built one extra factory, stopped pumping the marines and mainly built tanks, wraiths and ghosts.

The fat lady screams

Then he hits me again with a much larger force than the first one. Twelve+ tanks, twelve wraiths, several science vessels, a few goliaths, a few medics, a few ghosts and random marines spread out.

Other than having a few more ghosts, and more marines he completely outpowers my forces. A heavy micro intensive battle starts, wraiths against my wraiths, his SV's emp'ing my wraiths I counter by scanning his wraiths and aims at his wraiths one by one, he places defensive matrixes on his tanks and irridates my ghosts who in return locks his tanks before being restored by my medics, his medics restores his tanks and moves up his marines, who in return instantly dies as soon as my arclite cannons reload which in return get's locked down by his ghosts. This was a truly a battle of epic micro-proportions. My concentration was mainly aimed to get rid of his wraiths and his concentration was mainly aimed to get rid of my tanks. When you click so fast and is so deeply concentrated you forget everything else, including time and after an unknown amount of nanoseconds, we both succeeded with our objectives. Having air superiority I was able to start breathing again and slowly poke the tanks to death with my vicious wraith lasers but not after they effectively wiped out half my base...AGAIN.

This time my barracks and factories were destroyed. And I was left only with the thought of conceding for the second time. Once again I decided to continue, after all, he would finish me off in a couple of minutes anyway.

Having stockpiled minerals and gas under the fight, I simultanously built four factories.

Leave my expansions alone!

Noticing my undefended south expansion, he dispatched a sufficient force of marines and made scrap-metal out of it. I intercepted his forces and turned them into red goo. Then I expanded mid top again AND mid bottom. Seeing my expansion happy tactic he dropped marines in the mid top and forced me to cancel the c&c and build it at my natural instead. And believe it or not... I actually stationed defence at the mid bottom exp =)

After running all over the map with my scv's I suddenly realized that he didn't have map control after all. Strengthened by this belief I sent my 20 tanks, a couple of goliaths, wraiths and ghosts to his base...Now is the time to pay!

Heeeeeeere's Johnny!

Opponent: You really should stop drinking while playing.
Me: Why?
Opponent: You play too good when you do.
Me: Laf! thanks.

My strike was of course a failure, every lockdown was faced with a restoration. My wraiths was too scared to enter a pack of goliaths and turrets and his ramped tanks could wipe out any number of tanks I sent at him. So I just settled with containment and continued to expand.

Luckily he realized where this was heading, and instead of dragging it out he surrendered and we both gave shared vision. I saw that he had his main, natural expansion and the mid top's second natural mineral only expansion.

Opponent: Lemme give you a hint
Opponent: Do you see my mineral exp just below mid top?
Me: yes.
Opponent: No one ever looks there, great place to expand
Me: Hehe...actually, I expanded there before you, but gave it up for the island gas.
Opponent: gg
Me: gg

Lessons learned:

1. It's true...No one ever looks at that mineral only exp.
2. Tank push is the only way for terran vs terran.
3. Drink and play.
4. Pics would have been nice.
5. Swedes have a natural disadvantage writing english texts =)
6. You rarely see terran expand like a zerg but since it's just such an outrageous thought, it might work.
7. If you micro, you often forces the opponent to micro as well instead of macro.
8. It all comes down to who's the fastest mouse clicker.
9. I should have lost this one.
