PART4: Emergency evacuation!
Prologue
I had decided to be terran tonight because it arguably makes for more exciting games, I will let you guys be the judge. No one was around at supper time so I joined a public game. I found one hosted by Mr.Wang on…. BGH.
Now, I know some of you are tempted to stop reading right then and there and if that's what you want…
SO BE IT!
Still with me? Ok cool… Be a good fellow and let the pics load will you?
Game info:
Map: Green hunters
Players:
~Nb~Grimjack (Myself) chose terran at 1500
MrWang chose protoss at the 1300 position
"How does that wall in build go again?"
As you guessed, greenhunters is a BGH clone. The only difference being that instead of water separation, you are separated by canyon ridges. In the words of King (a character in the movie platoon), "It don't make no difference no how".
I started my build by getting depot on 8, rax on 9 and other depot on 10 all part of a choke wall in. while the 8th began a scouting mission. I scouted counter clockwise and found him right on top of me. I was glad i had walled in, this was going to be dirty and messy…
My scv runs around kills an attacking probe then gets cocky and gets killed by all the others. I had just learned one thing about my opponent, he can be distracted. I also learned he was building a gate and a forge. He would either go goons or cannon in and go for carriers.
I ordered the construction of two facs followed by a starport. I was going to try heavy metal on him. I sent one of my marines to scout…
Lightly running through the canyons, private Peter Ryan was elated. He was out there doing what he liked best, recon. Coming up on the known location of the protoss base he slowed to a stalk and advanced by small steps.
"Commander," he called in. "I have found the first few buildings, I believe they are cannons, going in for a closer look."
"No! Ryan, come back!" The commander shouted through the comm but it was no use, only static answered him. Damn, he thought. Another letter to write…
"I have a cunning plan"
Seeing he was cannoning in, I knew he was going to go carriers so I decided to go for a fast tank drop instead. I got comsat and pumped out tanks and dropships I began an expansion at 1700. I sent my vulture over to mine in front of the canons and got my troops set up for their attack run.
To create a diversion for my tank drop, I sent 10 or so marine with one tank and to harass the cannon field. I then scanned the base, and sent in my 3 ships full of tanks over to his mineral line. As the sound of arclite cannon sounded at his choke, my tanks were landing in his line and thats when I saw them.
Carriers, at least 3 of them.
"Game over man, Game over…"
They attacked the forces at his front entrance and my marines were able to valiantly buy time for my tanks on the inside to start pounding…
"Echo leader to tango six come in tango six" the comm buzzed over the din of arclite canons just enough for colonel McKenzie to hear. He went inside his tank to dim the sound and answered the dropship's call.
"Go ahead echo, over"
"Sir, they have carriers, zulu group are taking fire recommend we pick up and head back to base."
Taking a look at the tactical map he could indeed make the outline of the stargates. Damn, they warped in fast…
"Negative echo leader, you go on ahead, we are staying here to inflict as much damage as possible to these sons a…."
"But sir…"
"Ah just gave you an order captain! Now get!"
The colonel took a second to look at his wife's photograph. Bye Mary-Sue, he thought, be good… He put his game face back on and poked his head back out of the tank to direct his platoon's fire on the nexus.
There is a time honored military tactic which consists of a controlled rout in which you delay the enemy's advance by making him pay for every inch of ground you give him. This is what I attempted.
While my tanks were blasting his main, I started producing wraiths. It still takes awhile for a few carriers to kill 6 tanks so by the time he was ready to attack my main, I had 2 wraiths. I was also making an armory to try to pump out gols.
My new command center at 1700 wasn't completely finished so I had the scvs mine at the main until the last minute.
The cloaking tech kicked in just as the interceptors began to fly around the base. Marines came in to help the wraiths while 2 gols were being produced. The gols came in fought well and died. The wraiths de-cloaked and it was obvious that he was slowly winning.
I had just enough time to research lockdown from my covert ops facility before it got destroyed and had ordered mass scv evacuation to the 1700 location just as my new CC was reaching 80% completion. My first ghosts didn't have enough energy to lock down his fleet and they died as soon as they got spotted. At this point I did what any starcraft player does when he has an ace up his sleeve.
"GG" I said.
"You are a really good player"
"You are hot"

"Just like shooting wamprats in my T-16 back home"
Meanwhile at my new base I had 3 starports cranking out wraiths like no tomorrow. I was cursing myself for taking the expansion this close to my main because as he was finishing it off I could see the interceptors flying dangerously close to my new buildings…
But he didn't see them. After finishing my main he went off to hunt my floating barracks which I had sent towards the west. Soon he would know i had another base somewhere, I had to be ready. I had six wraiths, and e-bay some turrets and a new sci-facility with covert-ops. My main focus was wraith production. Little swishing interceptors sounds were making themselves heard over my speakers.
Game time.
The SCVS lifted their heads for a moment as the wraiths flew over to engage the attacking fleet. They knew their survival rested on the shoulders of the pilots and each offered a silent prayer that they do well.
"Voodoo leader to squadron, Lock tri-foils in attack position and activate the cloak. Its time to open a can of whoop ass."
"Roger that, Voodoo leader"
He must have been one of those no-upgrade dudes because his 5 carriers popped like blimps flying in electrical wires. The wraiths had done better than I ever thought. They killed every single carrier before they had to de-cloak.
Thanks to my timely evacuation, I had suffered only a minor slump in income and now I was back in the money even though my tech was uneven. I expanded again this time at the 1800 position and made 3 barracks there. I rebuilt a academy and started pumping out ghosts.
Meanwhile I was still harassing him with wraiths and had used my heroic squadron to wipe out his peonline. He tried to scared them away with a goon and 2 more carriers (probably thinking they had run out of cloak energy). Voodoo squadron just cloaked back popped them and returned to the nexuses.
My second squadron (Foxtrot) of nine came online, I sent shift-attack moved them to each possible expansion points to make sure he wasn't pulling anything.
"Give up?" I ask him.
"No" he says "You have to find my other base". As if on cue, Foxtrot squadron just finish their tour of the map and I know he is bluffing.
I have 5 ghosts, a silo and i am thinking it would be nice to lockdown and nuke his carriers…
That's when he leaves the game.
Lessons learned
1) all the trouble i got into in this game was MY doing. When I saw the cannons blocking his choke I should have immediately gone for goliaths and ghosts. My main should never have fallen
2) Don't anybody tell me wraiths suck, they really came through for me here and I didn't have time to upgrade them even.
3) When going heavy metal always remember Goliaths! They are part of this strat too…
4) For the newbies reading this, no matter what the comp makes you think, carriers cannot win games by themselves!
5) Taking screenshots while playing doesn't get you the best shots…
6) The preview button owns!!!!
Cheers,
