Zileas
VS
UltraliskDrop

A Zileas Game

Sure to boost the rating a bit :)

Intro

I was sitting around NoHunters after playing a couple of 2v2s, when Zileas came in. As always happens now when he comes in, a lively debate of whether or not it was the Zileas began. Myself, I'm sure it's him, due to shockwave's comments on the JPaikman VS Zileas BR. After Zileas has been in the room for a bit, he says 'zileas/zileas'. I, knowing that I have a chance to watch a StarCraft legend, immediately start trying to join, and I am successful. It turns out that the game is UltraliskDrop VS Zileas, with me and Ioti watching. Zileas randomed, which I hear is what he usually does now, and UltraliskDrop switched to zerg at the last second.

Needed Info

The map was Dire Straits, wanted by Zileas due to the fact that he was better at islands than land. Zileas had randomed to Terran, gotten teal as his color, and was in the upper right. UltraliskDrop had chosen Zerg, got the hard-to-see (at least on my computer and on non-sand/ice maps) brown, and was in the upper left.

THE GAME

Begining Builds

Zileas of the noble terran had his build primed for a very fast expnasion, on SCV 15 to be exact. He went quick tech, making two barracks, an academy, comsat, and a single factory, and floating one of the barracks to the middle left island, where he floated the CC he made on SCV 15. His buildings placement was very good. When his factory was completed, he had built a partial wall-in that made it so that zerglings would be unable to get to his tanks easily and hydras would only be able to attack one or two at a time. Soon after his factory was done, he constructed an engineering bay at his expansion. UltraliskDrop, however, was planning to go for a fast offensive, and went double lair tech, his goal being a hopefully deadly early hydra drop. In addition, once his scouting overlord found Zileas, and saw that Zileas had made an early expansion, he was even more optimistic about his hydra drop, thinking that the main would be weaker due to money spent establishing and protecting the expansion. As the game went on, the weird chat that goes on in most friendly games started, and the weirdest statements that we end up with, from Zileas and fellow watcher Ioti, are

The Drop

UltraliskDrop, while not having teched to his name, still had a hydra drop ready quite quickly. Before he loaded his hydras, though, he sent a overlord with a drone in it out to claim the upper middle expansion. As the expansion started, UltraliskDroploaded his hydras into his overlords as Zileas was finishing with his Science Facilty, and had built one starport and was building another. The drop consisted on 5 overlords filled with hydras, and it reached the island with no resistance, but Zileas had suspected this might happen from the start, and this was what his partial wall-in was for. The hydras attempted to attack head-on, but were slaughtered by Zileas's walled in tanks and bunker. The wall-in made it so that while the hydras were attracted to the tanks due to the tank fire, they were unable to get more than one or two at a time in range for the tank. As you probably can imagine, this was not helpful to the hydras. Below is a picture from the middle of the battle. UltraliskDrop's hydra drop was not defeated without losses, though. UltraliskDrop had kept a few hydras out of tank range and managed to kill Zileas's one starport, and the hydras damaged the one that was being built. But the hydras soon wandered into tank range, and were killed.

Zileas, Expansion Hunter

While the drop was happening, Zileas had been utilizing his dropship to seek and destroy expansions, and he quickly found UltraliskDrop's top middle expansion, and razed it using a tank, 2 marines, and an SCV, which made a bunker. Because the hydra drop was going on while this was happening, I doubt UltraliskDrop even noticed that his expansion was dying until after the drop. And because he had used all his hydras for the drop, he was unable to take back his expansion. After destroying the hatch, he constructed two turrets and then a CC. UltraliskDrop, now starting to get desperate about needing money, seeing as how his opponent had two bases running and one under construction, tried to expand to the middle left expansion. Unluckily for him, Zileas soon spotted the expansion attempt and landed his standard force of one tank, 2 marines, a firebat, and a SCV there, quickly constructing a bunker and seiging the tank. This time UltraliskDrop was able to cancel, and landed a couple overlords of hydras on the island to deal with the terran units. But, even though he had eliminated the threat, for now at least, from the middle left island, UltraliskDrop still needed an expansion, and so started one at the bottom left starting spot. He also started rebuilding his middle left expansion, keeping some hydras there for defense. By now, he was quite desperate for an expansion, seeing as how Zileas had 3 running bases to his one.

SVs and BCs

While all this had been going on, Zileas had been using the money from his 3 bases to make 3 starports, 6 SVs, and research irradiate and the energy upgrade. He sent these 6 SVs on an irradiate raid, His SVs ran into the hydras and drone that UltraliskDrop had dropped of at the center left expansion, and quickly killed most of the hydras, the drone, and some of the overlords. Meanwhile, Zileas had chosen his add-on for his science facilty to be the physics lab, essential to the production of BCs. When it was completed, he began making BCs simultaneously from his 3 starports. BCs with SV support do well against zerg, but do especially well against zerg who are still at lair tech without a queens nest made. Which, of course, was the state that UltraliskDrop was in. Zileas landed on the bottom middle expansion and began construction around the same time that his opponent's bottom left expansion started to come online. Zileas's fourth, fifth, and sixth BCs came out as his CC at bottom middle reached 500. Soon after the BCs came out, he was dropped by UltraliskDrop. The drop consisted of six overlords filled with hydras. The drop was easily repulsed by the BCs, and when UltraliskDrop saw the BCs, and realized he hadn't even made a queens nest, he realized that he was in trouble, as is shown by what he is saying in the screenshot. Zileas, smartly, seized the advantage, and proceeded to destroy UltraliskDrop's bottom left expansion, and then his middle left one. UltraliskDrop was now in major trouble, seeing as he didn't have a queens nest or even an evo chamber. He began frantic construction of those two buildings, but alas, 'twas too late. Zileas's BCs and SVs swept down on his expansion. The BCs soon proceeded to the main, protected by d-matrix. Seeing that UltraliskDrop had neither defilers nor devourers, Zileas proceeded to demolish the main, the defending hydras swiftly falling to the lasers of the BCs, which now numbered nine. A highlight of the battle was Zileas irradiating one of his BCs and moving it over the hydras, killing most of the hydras. UltraliskDrop and Zileas both offered end-game "gg's" as the last structure was razed.

Note the fact that Zileas significantly outresourced UltraliskDrop, and lost only TEN units, to UltraliskDrop's 123.

Lessons Learned

  • Wall-in type builds can OWN if used properly.
  • If you have a choice between someone's main, and their undefende expansion, choose the expansion.
  • You can early expand and still have adequate defense for your main.
  • Zerg shouldn't rely exclusively on hydra drops as this one did.
  • Zerg need hive tech in late game.
  • Zileas is good on islands.
  • And lastly, for those of you who STILL don't think it's the real Zileas, DESPITE all evidence (e-mails, ICQs, his playing style, he knows all about his life and other things), wake up, it is him.
Thank you for reading this, and I hope you liked the BR.
