The Start

I decided to write this report after and intense ladder game. I lost the game, but I find that I learn more when I lose games then when I win, so I decided to share some of my knowledge on battlereports.com. When the game started I scouted with my 7th scv and found my opponent at the 3 o'clock position. When my scv came in he was doing the conventional two gate build order. Back at home, I build my supply depot on scv 8, and my barracks at 10. While my barracks was building I got gas. Back at my opponents base, after taking a quick look around I stashed my scv in the corner of his base so I could sweep him by to take another look in a minute or two. To continue on my build order back home, when my barracks finished I got a bunker positioned between my supply depot and barracks so the front side of the bunker was blocked off and I started making marines from my barracks. As soon as I had enough for a factory I put one down in position so my bunker would also cover it. The entire time I am doing this I am sure to keep a constant pumping of marines from my one barrack. When my scv sweeps through my opponents base again I see that his cybernetics core just finished and he was starting a robotics facility. Back at home when my factory finished, I put on the add on and upgraded the mines for the vultures and soon after started a starport. Right about this time my opponent decides to attack.

First Attack

He first tried getting my gas, but it was just in range of my bunker so he retreated. Other than my bunker I also had about 6 marines and one vulture out. He brings his force of about 4 zealots and 2 goons behind my base and finds some buildings to hit. I got the marines I had in the bunker out and I would attack his forces and retreat. During the fight my mine research finished and I attacked with my marines while laying mines beside his forces. With the combination of my marines and the mines I took out the forces losing only a couple of marines. I built some more vultures and mined around my mineral line and my choke and as soon as my starport finished I made a wraith.

Defending my Opponents Second Attack

Soon after this I put down an academy, got the tank siege upgrade, and made a second barracks. I sent another scv on a mission to attempt to get more recon and it looked like he was going infantry because my scv blew up from goon fire as it neared the ramp of my enemies base. At this time I decided to lay one mine at every expansion spot. As soon as my wraith finished I sent it to my opponents base. when I neared he had a dropship right beside his robotics facility. I started firing on it and killed it right when goons came to kill my wraith. I was thinking this was good, I just saved myself even more time before a drop. If one came now it would be lucky to do any damage at all considering I already had tanks with siege. At home, I was keeping pretty much a constant pumping of units from my two barracks, factory and starport. I had one of my wraiths positioned above the ledge of his natural and caught a glimpse of units running by toward the direction of my base. I knew the attack was coming soon. Right before the attack hit I started on a science facility. I brought my wraiths(numbering 2 or 3 at the time) out and patrolled around outside my base trying to catch any dropships if he was going to try and drop me while he attacked. I had my base set up so I had mines right inside the range of my tank fire so if he attacked the mines my tanks can fine on his units, and if he goes for my tanks the mines will hopefully get his units. When he attacks the mine do a decent amount of damage, and as I predicted a dropship comes in to the side of my base and it drops of its payload of a reaver and two zealots right before my wraiths destroyed it. When his units come for my tanks, I stimp my marines I have hiding right behind them and clean up. I think my opponent was not expecting me to have as many marines I did with the medics. After the fight, I lost one tank and a handful of marines. I thought I had this game easily won.

Going on the Offensive

Right when the attack was finished I unsieged two of my tanks, leaving one still sieged at my base and gathered them together with all my marines and medics. The wraith I had near his base spotted that my opponent had started an expansion at his natural and that it was almost finished warping in. I scanned my opponents main base and saw nothing new and exciting in there:) I bring my marines and medics toward his natural and pick my two tanks up in a dropship and at this time started an expansion at my natural too. I intended to drop the tanks off on the end of my opponents ledge so my marines could be protected by their fire. I was positioning my tanks on his ledge when I hear blades swiping through my marines. by the time I scanned most my marines were gone. Normally I take precautions with my marines and will bring down scvs down to build turrets and protect with scan while the turret is building, but one I scanned his base I saw no templar archives. Out of frustration I scanned his base again a little lower and noticed that he had a citadel and templar archives tucked away below his base:( I decided to keep cool and positioned the tanks where they could hit his nexus. I brought my three wraiths and positioned them over the ledge in case he tried dropping something to destroy my tanks, but after nothing came for a couple of seconds I decided to go back to my base for some upkeep. I had one vessel building, started another factory, and added on the building to my science facility so I could build ghost. I scanned both corner islands and still saw no attempt to expand there. I loaded up two scvs in a dropship and ordered one to be dropped of at each island so I would not have to use my precious scan checking them. Right then, I see a red flashing above my opponents natural and quickly go over there. He somehow snuck a dropship, or I think two past my wraiths. I quickly unsieged my tanks, but before I knew it, his three goons, and two dark templars destroyed the tanks and my wraiths. I could not believe I had such sloppy unit control. I made several mistakes on this attack. First of all I should have had better recon of his base, and been prepared for the dark templars. Also when I sieged his ledge I should not have done a half ass job at it. I should have brought along two scvs, and a handful of marines so it would have been very difficult for him to wipe out the forces there.

Under Fire

Back at home I kept up the production from all of my buildings, and as soon as I had the chance I researched the ghost lockdown and started producing ghost and started on a third barracks. I loaded up a dropship with three two vultures and a tank, and another with 4 marines, and was intending to mine above my natural and set up the tanks with the marines spaced around it. Right when my dropships were going to the ledge two of my opponents dropships landed above my natural and three dragoons and two high templar pop out. I know that my two vultures and tank would have died to his forces so I retreat my dropship and unload my tank on the low ground and bring another tank for support and bring a science vessel over for sight. I eventually kill his forces up there, but not before he killed my gas and got off a storm on my retreating scvs killing a good amount of them. I gained control of my ledge again and gather my forces for another strike.....

Another Attempt at Attacking

I scan my opponents natural and see that it is up and running and wanted to put a stop to it. His forces appeared to consist of goons, about 4 or 5 high temps, and in his main, I caught the glimpse of a carrier popping out. Of course I was not worried because I had ghost and could easily lock the large blimps down. I gathered a force of four tanks, three vultures, a science vessel, about fourteen marines, a couple of medics, four ghost, and two scvs and head out toward the front of his base in hopes to block him off so his only way to me would be drop ship. At this time I also started building a CC in my main so I could float it down to the position 12 main. During this time I was making one of my largest mistakes: I normally continue pumping scvs out of both my command centers and when I expand I bring the extra scvs over to the next expansion, and I just keep expanding and growing. This game, I thought I had it under control and I payed to much attention to my units and I would get clumps of 400 minerals at a time, so I would que up some units and fine myself broke and say, next time I will build extra scvs. What I should have done is build the scvs first. Personally I like to control group my CC and buildings I am creating units from, so during battle I can also pump units, but this game I lacked doing that.
Back at his base I set up a blockade outside his base. To make a long story short, he broke through. The reasons he broke through was first of all, I some bunkers would have helped a lot. He was able to attack my units with some of his melee units and get a good storm off on my marines killing a good amount of them. Second of all I should have brought down my new units to support the effort. After he destroyed my blockade, he started gathering his units near the middle of the map in attempt to block me off.

Downfall

After my blockade was destroyed I was worried about my expansion at 12 main which sat there with almost no defense. I knew my opponent must know about it because I have spotted observers of his on patrol everywhere. So I gather two tanks and 8 marines and dropship it over to the expansion. I then bring the two dropships back for another load, but before it reaches there the expansion is attacked, destroying all of my scvs and units I brought to protect it. The only thing I came away with was a heavily damaged command center that I was able to float back to my main. Soon after, a spider mine of mine at the twelve o'clock position spots my opponent warping in a nexus there. I knew this was not good, I just lost an expansion and my opponent is starting another one. I scan his expansion to see if I can drop it, but I see that he had a templar two dragoons and two zealots and that if I dropped marines on it to destroy it I would take large casualties. Instead I sneak a ghost near the expansion armed with the ability to nuke on the way. The ghost catches the sigh of the corner of a carrier while he is exiting my base. I scan to get a better look and a little past my second natural he has gathered about 18 dragoons and 7 carriers and a couple of templar. I attempt to nuke the group of units aiming on the carrier so he could not see the little red dot. Unluckily for me he moved his units away and saved them from the nuke, and I move the ghost on to his expansion. I then knew if I wanted to win I had to gain dominance in the game again. I gather together my forces consisting of six tanks, a couple of vultures, about 30 marines and medics, 9 ghost, and 5 goliaths. I would have had more ghost, but I lost my ghost before:( I control my units together, and control group my ghost together so I can easily cast lockdown on all his units. I get my units as close to him as I would dear, and to start of the fight I sent in my two science vessels and cast two quick emps. I then Moved all my units in keeping my tanks and back and when the enemy got into view I sieged the tanks. I then get my control group of ghost and was preparing for lockdown madness when a storm landed perfectly on my group of ghost that I had clumped together I only successfully lockdowned two carriers before they died. My marine injected them selfs with drugs and foolishly charged. The enemy took losses, but not nearly as severe as mine, losing the ghost was to critical in winning this battle. I should have scanned to assure I had emped all his templars and most important of all I should not have had my ghost clumped on my flank:) I quickly try gathering units to repel his attack, but they come barreling through my front door. before my natural was destroyed I successfully launched a nuke at his expansion at the 12 o'clock main right into the mineral line, killing most of the probes he had brought from his main to there. I gathered what troops I had, but the carriers easily ran over my troops I had remaining. I said GG and tried leaving the game with the knowledge of how I will come back, and win over the lost temple again!

Some quick lessons that I learned in this game was that win I had repelled his first attack I should have made sure I made a secure blockade out of his base. Bunkers always help a lot because they are not affected by PSI. Also if I brought troops to support that would have helped too. Ghost are awesome vs. protoss, but only if they are alive:) Also irradiate works awesome against templars, but if you are going to make a quick assault like I attempted, I prefer using emp because the will not be warned as early that the attack is coming, and emp also weaken the other units. I hope that you enjoyed this report!
