Me vs [S]Mass
Set Up
Temple on faster. I chose toss and he chose zerg. I ended up at 3 with him at 12. I guess I should have done the quick expo, but instead I decided to get screwy. I figured I would try to mass zeals and run him over.
He went for a second hatch at his choke. Seeing this done by King_Lewis, I figured it was going to be followed by a hatch at his natural. Pulling of an "o so cheesy" strat, I placed a pylon at his natural. I then sent my first 2 zeals to see if I could do any damage. No sunkens, but too many lings and I had to abort. He also killed my pylon at this point. He tried to take my choke, but his 3-4 lings were facing 5-6 zeals at the top of my choke. I then attempted to expand to my natural. Once I had about 10 1-0 zeals with speed, I attacked. Unfortunately he was going lings and hydra, not the muta/ling I was hoping. I had to retreat my zeals and began building goons.
The impending doom.....
After a minute of no action, I sent a zeal to see what was up. No troops, but I did see the last of a hydra "getting into" an ol. I pulled all of my troops from my natural and sent them to my main. Using probes, zeals, and goons... I fought it off. The only bad part was my base set up didn't allow the goons to get to the battle quickly, causing me to lose quite a few probes. As I look at the minimap I see some of his troops at my nexus. Figuring he had sent some lings in, I tried to send my troops there. When I zoomed in I caught the site of 6 lurkers burrowing. He had ran them past my 1 cannon. :( Observers and hts were my next move.
My move....
I sent a probe and shuttle in a round about way to the bottom right to expand. I then cleared the lurkers with storm and observers. I sent 6 zeals to six after watching a trail of drones head south. I was able to kill the drones before more of his troops arrived. I then sent a follow-up of zeals and goons and finished it off. I then sent a zeal to check 9 and sent an observer to top left. No hatch at top left, but there was one at 9.
He tried to hit my main at this point and I barely fought it off with a liberal use of storm. I then took my troops at six and headed to 9. As my goons started in too, I thought of a good idea. I kept them at the choke to block reenforcements. Sure enough, my 6-7 goons withheld a 12+hydra force.
He was down to his natural, and I was down to a defensless island. Next move was his... a wave of mutas came. I stormed, he ran, I stormed, he assasinated... it was a micro nightmare. I didn't have the cash to defend my island and was just hanging on. Eventually his attacks became smaller and smaller. Had I finally starved him?
The turn... the demise
That was the end... but he knew I was getting money from somewhere. After losing my natural, I had never reclaimed it. Eventually he found my expo and cleared it with 8-9 muties. He then took my mineral only... I stormed most of the drones away... but the damage was done. I lost to waves of hydra, lings, and muta.
He even thought I won it too...... the drop comboed with his lurkers put me TOO far behind. GG! and I lost 100 bucks.
3rd Place... winner gets $250 loser gets $100
This was fought against Agent911 and St_Kevin..!!
Map was Rivalry
Agent911 as terran landed at top
Kev morphed as zerg at the bottom
This info is what I heard, I did not actually observe this game
Agent scouted with his 5th scv. Not seeing a pool, agent decides to go cheesy... he builds a rax off to the side. With the early scouting, Kev decided to go pool before 2nd hatch... something he rarely does.
From there I don't know exactly what happened. I did manage to see the end part with Kev using hydra to pick Agent's base away. He was fought off by a bunker and 12 scvs repairing. I believe this is where Agent brought the cheese out. Later I heard Kev say, "I though the game was over when those rines came out", I then heard Agent respond, "Yeah, I should have waited for medics". I believe that Agent was withheld and the rest was clean-up for Kev.
FOR THE MONEY.. Winner $1000, Loser $500
Not a bad way to play, knowing you will walk away, even if you lose, with $500 bones in your pocket. With that in mind, let the game begin.
Starts
Maynard goes as toss @ 12
[S]Br@d also toss @ 9
The opening builds were both tech. It appeared as if they were both going goons. Sadly it was hard to observe from 5 foot away, so details are pretty vague.
Since I can not go into too much detail, I will give my observations of the players.
Players
Br@d was a calm as a person who was just goofing off. Sitting half slouched, hat back, just "playing". I didn't concentrate on his play so much... heck, I had Maynard to watch.
Maynard was a quick mofo. All you would see is his gates "light up" and then the nexus, but you never saw anything actually building. Nor did you ever see him rest... He was either clicking on a nexus, a gate, making a pylon, seeing how far something was along... etc. He sat pretty relaxed also except for a couple of "dancing" feet.
1st Move
Maynard was the first one to make a move. He moved in a ton of goons. As he attacked, he would micro his goons back. Intermediatly he would go back to his base (With a hotkey) and que up some troops, check on probes, and build a couple more structures. Maynard for some reason couldn't take the choke... I later learned that goons, a couple cliff cannons, and dts kept him at bay.
Unseen Enemy
After Maynard seemed to contain, he started his expo and got a shuttle/reaver and joined his goons with the reaver. At which point Maynard's troops started oozing blue right and left. Kev responded with a "Does Br@d have dt's?" This was confirmed when Maynard clutched his head between his hands. As the dt's moved in to Maynard's expo, Maynard got up from his seat and placed his hand on his forehead. The game had been turned at the drop of a hat. A quick look to Br@d's comp. shown the unseen killers.. 7 dt's soon joined by 3 more. Maynard had given up as soon as his contain was broke.
Whether or not Maynard could have still won it is up for debate. As I stated, I could not see the bases too well, but I have had many people tell me that Maynard had an observer at his base. Maybe Maynard felt he had lost too many troops to hold his choke. Maybe Maynard was so pissed at his momentary lapse, he just didn't want to continue. I honestly don't know. I do know that Maynard has been around long enough to be able to judge his chances. I think his "give up" attitude was just due to the fact that the best he could do is prolong the loss. He had lost his expansion and would not be able to claim it back for a bit. His enemy was sure to expand at that point...
Well I don't think anyone will ever really know. Bottom line is that Br@d's excellent play with the combination of Maynard's lapse, gave Br@d a check for $1000.
My notes: A lot of people have been bashing Maynard's attitude after the match. From experience I have learned that some people don't take losses well. Combine that with the fact that he thought he had it won, and that he could have prevented his loss with 1 observer.... you have a unhappy person. Saying he gave up too easily is hard to say. As I said, he's been around enough to know his chances. I imagine he felt the game was over and he got up. No 'gg'? Well he was pissed... I don't think he was mad at anyone but himself.
All in all everyone was great, I only hope they have another tourney in Phoenix... I would defintitely attend. |
