I entered nwtr looking for a game, cause nohunters was flooding with chat-happy people. I asked necrosausage!! if he wanted in, and we decided to go 2v2 public. Mukster also from nwtr joined and then necro messaged snakeyez to join. The teams would be Necrosausage!! and myself (Phelsior) vs Snakeyez and Mukster.
The battle was fought over the well-knowned Lost Temple, and the bodies and blue soup of earlier conflicts was just being cleared away by Rent-a-peon when the contestants set up camp on their respective platforms.
--Early scouting and builds--
Necrosausage began mining the western position, and sent a volonteer to scout out enemy activity first to the north and then to the east. The brave guy soon found that the north had been infested with the dirty brown probes of Mukster, and after a second sweep of the scout, it became clear that the toss commander was going for 2 gateways. Necro himself constructed two barracks initially, aiming for lots of marines and medics.
My hatchery spawned in the botton location, and in an effort to max out my economy I neglected to hatch any lings at all. I wanted to get the hydras fast and in numbers and hoped that a quick rush would not come. I 2 hatched, and built a hydralisk den. This would prove fatal to myself as a probe scouted out my base and reported the valuable information back to its commander.
In the east, the protoss had allied with a strange breed of snake-like zerg, and recon showed that a 2nd hatchery was produced at the choke. Also, a spawning pool was err.. spawning in.
--First contact!--
As my drones were mining their own business (I crack my self up), several lings came running up my ramp and started at my buildings. Luckily a hovering overlord had warned my ally of the upcoming assault, and marines started the Long Walk across the map. Until they would arrive, I had to fend off the lings using drones and 2 freshly hatched hydras. Quite a few drones sacrificd themselves in the microed battle that ensued. I would attack with 1 hydra, while the other pulled back, and repeat. All this while microing my poor drones away from lings. Then reinforcements from both sides came into the scene. First three enemy zealots, and then some marines firing those friendly U-238 salvos.
In the end, the last of the enemy zealot was dispatched, and we all went back to managing our bases. My economy was severely damaged as most of my many drones had been killed off. One sole panting hydra at 16 hp stood guard, green phlegm dripping between broken teeth.
There was a lull in the action.
--Speed shift--
A little later, my main was protected with two sunkens and some of my scouting lings told us that the eastern natural was being guarded by several lurkers. Necro awaited the arrival of Science vessels, before we both amassed marines, medics and hydras in the middle. Speeded overlords was added to the mix, and with the arrival of the first SV, we sounded the horn. Marines stimmed, waited to heal, and we both charged in. The lurkers went down pretty fast, but now defending lings and mutalisks came out to meet us. We pressed on to the ramp and started on the expansion in the natural, but defending sunkens on the cliff, backing up, we where grinding to a halt, and now, toss reinforcements slammed agains our rear. We were thrown back out.
But our bases had not been idle, and soon a fresh wave of medrinehydras came knocking again. I don`t know how many times we attacked Snakeyez this way, but the battle was very intense, and in one particular incident a very well placed storm killed a full control-group of hydras.
Soon I had expanded to my natural and was mining it merrily. Mukster had secured the bottom right island, and my friend, the Sausage of Death had control of both the northern island and his own natural... (Sound of psi storm crackling) No! My drones! A sneaky templar had been dropped on my naturals ledge, and killed quite a few workers. Having no transporting abilities at that moment, I asked for a little assistance. Some time later, I thought the templar had been taken care of, but doh! it had not. Another bunch of drones was sent to oblivion. This time I think necrosausage took care of the annoying massmurderer, but the damage was done, and necro had to do without my help for a while.
--Can we pull this one off?--
At this time there was a lot of fighting here and there. Snakeyez expanded to his second natural to fuel his many zerglings and upgrades. But now necrosausage got into nuking mood. I think a few landed, but one nuke was out of the ordinary. The toss commander was rallying goons from all his gates in a spot just north of the middle, with no observer ... 18 goons stood there staring blindly into the night. One beautifully placed nuke later, and the goons would never be returning. I have never seen such an ocean of blue soup! (See picture).
At this time my main had been mined out, and I expanded to my 2nd natural to try to get back on my fighting feet. We tried to keep up the pressure, with necro going hard marines with many Science vessels for support, and me still going plain hydras. The game had been so intense, that I never had the time for further teching. Then lots of cracklings came into play. I had just asked necro ”Can you help me if I get crackling attacked?” At that moment I saw the swarm coming right at me. ”No” he said. I think we both were short on cash at this particular moment. The cracklings made short work of my defending hydras and sunkens, and the expansions I had, died to the power of lings. NecroÕs marines managed to stall the zerg for a while, but my economy was dead, and soon after, I conceded.
Necro tried to stay in the game with a pair of cruisers, and destroyed the protoss island encampment, but even D-matrixed, they could not stand up to a mixed attack of scourge and corsairs.
With a major cracklingdrop on necros main, we shared vision and called it a good game.
Lessons learned:
- Even when powering hard, build some early defence.
- Perfect your buildorder, you will need the seconds early on.
- Nukes are cost effective.
- Games that you lose fighting are just as cool.
- Good games can still be found.
Thank you for your attention,
Phelsior
