THE WEREMUPPET ARCHIVES: AN AMUSING DEFEAT
Unlike my other tales, this is not a tale of victory, or even a terribly long, honorable, drawn out defeat. No, this is a story of psycological warfare and of arrogance. Anyway, here's the story:
It was our usual weekly battle session on Kali for my partner Wererhynadon and I. I started a 2v2 on Sherwood. Upon creation we quickly had two foes. One of them was named Seifer, a Terran. The other was a guy called OMEGA MAN, and like his name, he only spoke in caps. As I was stating that I would like everybody to fight to the death, OMEGA MAN gets impatient and starts saying stuff like "GO YOU STUPID F$*(ING IDIOT!" This irritiated me. Siefer seemed honorable, but OMEGA MAN, whose impatientce was abhorable, could not be allowed a victory. We began.
Weremuppet (Me) - Zerg, South
Wererhynadon (My partner) - Protoss, NW
OMEGA MAN (The impatient one) - Zerg, West
Seifer - Terran, East
As we began, I was fairly determined to destroy OMEGA MAN. I just didn't want to handle the thought of losing to him of all people. However, as we began, I perhaps overextended my tech while trying to get 12 Zerglings (It was a year and a half ago, remember, everybody was a newbie sometime...) , which slowed me down. Having already found OMEGA in the West, I sent my 12 Zerglings there. They were able to pop a budding Hatchery, apparently his third. Judging by the looks of his base, OMEGA MAN was going hardcore Zerglings, no Hydras, no gas, no air. Wererhynadon followed this up with a few Zealots, but not enough to do too much damage.
For me, OMEGA's plan was good. Hoping to kill some drones, I sent in 12 more Zerglings, which got killed without doing much. It was after this that a combined attack appeared before Wererhynadon's cannons and Zealots. Masses of Zerglings and Marines attacked, and while Wererhynadon killed many Zerglings, the Marines were left to push further in. Wererhynadon's main base was hopeless, but he still had a colony, and could hopefully go on to produce one of his patented Dravidican Reaver Landings. And at the same time I was getting a Spire up and ready to attack OMEGA MAN with Mutalisks, hopefully with impunity.
As we continued OMEGA man started bellowing things, apparently at Siefer, but since he never went private, we got to watch him tell his Terran ally that he wasn't stupid and that he could easily kill his Terran ally. However, Seifer, who appeared to have a LOT of Marines, could probably slaughter the foolish OMEGA MAN. I decided that OMEGA MAN would have to pay for his arrogance one way or another. I went private with OMEGA MAN, and a second later:
"WHY DON'T YOU JUST COME AND KILL ME THEN? COME ON!"
I was assuming that OMEGA MAN would think the sender of the message was his ally and not me. He would then attempt to destroy the super-powerful Siefer, an act that would destroy him utterly. I watched and waited.
While I had some defensive Hydralisks, they couldn't hold back the onslaught of Zerglings and Marines that soon poured into my base. While most of it was razed, I still had enough cash for four Mutalisks, which were given time to hatch by my Sunken Colonies. As the enemy pounded away on my Lair, the four Mutalisks hatched, one of them instantly dying under Marine fire, the other three being able to escape. Then I noticed that OMEGA MAN's Zerglings turned on Siefer, much to my delight. It was at this point that Seifers Marines quickly executed OMEGA MAN's massed Zerglings. It had worked.
With my Spire off in an obscure corner of my creep, it went unnoticed, and gave my three Mutalisks time to trash some of OMEGA MAN's drones, and then, when Marines arrived to destroy OMEGA MAN, I sent the Mutalisks off to attack Seifers colony. However, at this time, my Spire was found, and I was eliminated. From talking to Wererhynadon later, I learned that he had put up a good fight, holding off multiple Marine attacks, and being able to hold out until he was killed by Seige Tanks. Unfortunately, his classic Reaver landing was stopped by the now present Wraiths, but he got a large number of kills by hunting down roving Marine forces. However, at the same time, OMEGA MAN, as I learned, was eliminated. I felt justified in that he paid for his foolishness.
MORALS OF THE STORY:
- DON'T OVEREXTEND YOURSELF: I couldn't hold back the onslaught mainly because I didn't have a whole lot of troops defending my base, but instead went for a Lair too quickly. Kiddies, don't do this!
- DON'T BE A JERK: OMEGA MAN, aside from being a rude guest, was arrogant, and talked himself into getting killed by his own ally. Treat your allies and enemies alike with respect, and you won't have to worry about provoking your enemies.
- PSYCOLOGICAL WARFARE IS FUN: While this was probably one of my worse Zerg games, I did get to try out an old tactic of warfare: Divide and Conquer. By turning Seifer and OMEGA MAN against each other, not only did I buy time for Wererhynadon, but I also got a good laugh. Bluffing with a tactical purpose in mind (Except for hiding stuff at the end for no reason) is perfectly good tactics, if you can use it to turn things around. Your keyboard is a weapon too, so don't forget it.
Well, there ya go, hope you enjoyed it!
