GNG Membership Tournament, February 20th, 2000
Almost 30 Brood Wars players attended our Single Elimination Tourny Sunday night. Of those 30, the final four would have the opportunity to join the GNG adult guild. This BR is on one of the semi-finals, a match between ::Excel:: and _Zoso_ on the map Hotzone.
::Excell:: was Zerg, Red, starting at the upper left corner.
_Zoso_ was Protoss, Orange, starting at the upper right.
Excell starts with a common zerg build, 9 drone OL, 13 drone 2nd Hatch at lower left corner and then immediately builds 8 lings after his OL detects Zoso at upper right.
Zoso starts with a Gateway, then builds a forge. An old but not necessarily a good opening strategy. Already he is showing his fear of the mighty Zerg. He then makes 2 zealots and 2 cannons at the forward portion of his main. Then goes for an Assimilator much later than Excell's Extractor.
Excell sends his army of 8 lings around the perimeter of Zoso's main, avoiding the cannons and skillfully proceeds behind the mining probes and hits Zoso's Assimilator. Now, Zoso has 2 zealots in his main, and with a little micro would be able to attack and draw the lings closer to his stationary cannons, but chooses to sacrifice the Gas to keep the zealots safe. A costly move, as this dramatically slows down his ability to tech. Excell does lose 2 lings to cannons after the assimilator is destroyed, but flees the remaining 6 lings to his main to fight another day.
At Excell's 2nd expansion, he builds a Hydralisk Den and his drones are hard at work raking in the resources. Also starts a 3rd expansion with a hatch right below his main. A scouting probe locates Excell's 2nd hatch and the zealots march down to the lower left and take out both the Den and the hatch. He quickly makes another Den at his main. During the attack, Excell begins to send his 8 Hydras from his main to drive the zealots out of his expansion, but realizes they will arrive too late. Instead he orders his squad to attack Zoso's main. Upon arrival, Zoso brings out even more zealots to chase the 8 hydras out of his base and all the way accross the map to the zerg main. What Excell was doing was drawing the z's into an ambush, as more Hydras and a sunken decimate the walking zealots.
By this time, Zoso has rebuilt his gas and has started his tech phase. What does he go for? Reavers? Temps? Even Goons to compete with the many Hydras which are sure to retaliate? Nope. He goes for Observers. So now, Zoso has a small band of zealots and an observer vs Excell's growing force of Hydras. Excell has started to upgrade his hatch, and will surely get lurkers. But whether you have an observer or not, slow moving zealots are no match for the deadly lurks.
Now about 15 Hydras stampede towards Zoso's main, defended by 2 zealots, 2 cannons and an observer. They easily roll over the meager defenses. During the one-sided battle Excell mutates 6 Hydras into Lurkers inside the main, just to make sure. ;)
Game, set match in 14 minutes.
After the game, when asked why he chose to climb the tech tree solely for observers, _Zoso_ simply said, "I Feared Lurkers".
I wish to congratulate both _Zoso_ and ::Excel:: on some good games and making it to the final four and hope you both choose to accept our offer of membership into GNG. ::Excell:: went on to the final match and took 2nd overall behind RustyAsHell. Congrats!
