Our last recruitment tournament was March 5th and fielded a fine group of competitors. Thanks to AT&T’s inability to give me a stable connection, I was only able to observe one game.
NCG`Jinmaster vs. P2A^Squash
Map: Rivalry
< NCG`Jinmaster Brown Toss starting in the lower left P2A^Squash Teal Toss starting in the upper left. It has been a while since the game but I believe that both chose their races.

P2A^Squash starts pylon, gate, gate pylon, pylon while NCG`Jinmaster has a more devious tactic in mind and goes pylon, gate, cyber, pylon, gate.
P2A^Squash is the 1st to scout and finds NCG`Jinmaster right away, while NCG`Jinmaster starts his scouting counter clockwise and arrives well after P2A^Squash’s probe has returned from NCG`Jinmaster’s main. This late arrival offers some advantages though. Since NCG`Jinmaster was lucky or maybe just plain good enough to elude the zealots on P2A^Squash’s ramp, he gets a good look at the later build order and tries something totally radical, an offensive assimilator!

Well that is going to put P2A^Squash way behind in the goon development department, and any other tech tree he decides to pursue.
Having dispatched the nasty gas attack, P2A^Squash his gas, core, and adds a 3rd gate and a forge for defense.
NCG`Jinmaster is only running 2 gates at this point, but is swimming in gas compared to P2A^Squash and making goons to keep his edge. P2A^Squash can only get zealots right now and is madly pumping as many of them as he can knowing the inevitable goon rush is coming, and it does.
NCG`Jinmaster gets 4 goons and 2 zealots to knock on P2A^Squash’s front door, and P2A^Squash has to chase NCG`Jinmaster into the lower plateau as NCG`Jinmaster’s goons have the reach that P2A^Squash’s zealots don’t.

NCG`Jinmaster has little trouble dispatching the zealots by doing a little dance and quickly gains access to P2A^Squash’s main only to be met by the first of many teal goons.

With P2A^Squash running 3 gates to NCG`Jinmaster’s 2, NCG`Jinmaster is quickly over run. Reinforcements are marching north, but there is a lot of ground to cover and the initial attack is “squashed” before they arrive. NCG`Jinmaster did have the tactical savvy to fight the battle in the north part of P2A^Squash’s main so that after NCG`Jinmaster’s goons were killed, his reinforcements could get up the ramp before P2A^Squash could stop him.

But there is too much ground to cover for NCG`Jinmaster to be able to supply new troops as quickly as P2A^Squash and P2A^Squash is running 3 gates to NCG`Jinmaster’s 2. Realizing that he is being out produced, NCG`Jinmaster finally starts the 3rd gate and adds a robotics facility just for fun.
NCG`Jinmaster is a pressure kinda guy and likes to ensure containment. He gathers 6 goons and parks them just outside of P2A^Squash’s ramp, trying to prevent any probes sneaking out and starting an expansion. NCG`Jinmaster got a little too close and P2A^Squash’s 7 goons march down the ramp and engage.

Again, P2A^Squash has the numbers and the home field advantage. After finishing off NCG`Jinmaster’s last attack, P2A^Squash parks his goons by the bridge knowing that the bridge will serve quite nicely as a choke and will gain him a permanent numbers advantage in any future conflict.
P2A^Squash now begins the robotics facility and sends that sneaky probe off to the upper right main to start an expansion. NCG`Jinmaster has completed the support facility and is beginning to make reavers.
With his reaver almost done, NCG`Jinmaster sends a dozen goons north in preparation for a massive assault, and right into P2A^Squash’s well planned ambush.
NCG`Jinmaster’s goons are just marching along, ready to picnic outside of P2A^Squash’s ramp when they see a dozen of P2A^Squash’s goons and few zealots collecting tolls from the bridge.

There is no way that NCG`Jinmaster can get enough firepower on the bridge to break the bottleneck, until NCG`Jinmaster’s reaver lands. The reaver has a long range, and with goon support, forces P2A^Squash to back out of reaver range and away from the bridge thus allowing NCG`Jinmaster to cross. NCG`Jinmaster then sucks up his reaver in the shuttle and presses the attack.

NCG`Jinmaster’s tactics have been masterful to this point, the micro, the offensive gas attack, climbing the tech tree faster, forcing P2A^Squash to constantly back peddle. Then the inevitable happened, he oops’d. I am sure that it looked like a good idea at the time, but quickly found his error. NCG`Jinmaster landed the reaver in a most unfortunate spot!

Just as NCG`Jinmaster’s reinforcements were arriving, the poor reaver got off one shot before being slaughtered. Without reaver support and P2A^Squash still holding the bridge, NCG`Jinmaster’s newly arriving troops are no match for P2A^Squash.
P2A^Squash now begins the expansion he planned long ago in the upper right main, and NCG`Jinmaster begins an expansion at his mineral only natural.
There were 2 other observers in the game, and none of us is sure when it happened or why, but we noticed that NCG`Jinmaster only has one probe on gas at this point. Another mistake and this one is costly. All of the advantage he gained early is now gone.

To complicate matters P2A^Squash has his reaver done and drops behind Jinmaster’s minerals. Now NCG`Jinmaster did make a cannon by his nexus, but it was too far away from the minerals to provide a defense and the reaver just eats NCG`Jinmaster’s probes.

The reaver gets off 3 shots before NCG`Jinmaster can get his probes out and to his mineral only expansion. The reaver then starts pounding on the nexus. NCG`Jinmaster’s goons finally arrive to chase the reaver back into the shuttle, and P2A^Squash tries to hide the shuttle in the corner behind NCG`Jinmaster’s minerals. Bad idea. There just isn’t enough ridge to prevent the goons from targeting the shuttle and P2A^Squash loses both the reaver and the shuttle without a fight.

NCG`Jinmaster is not opposed to using what works and performs his own reaver drop on P2A^Squash’s expansion.

The drop gets all of the probes and the reaver starts hammering on the assimilator, then it stops. It has run fresh out of little white balls of POW! And to make matters worse, you know P2A^Squash is sending guys over to defend.
P2A^Squash knows that 2 goons should be plenty to take out an empty reaver. But NCG`Jinmaster has sent a goon squad of his own to help take out the expansion and to remind the reaver to make scarabs! NCG`Jinmaster’s goons intercept P2A^Squash and after stopping a sec to make 2 little pools of blue, proceed on to the expansion. NCG`Jinmaster’s reaver is hiding in the shuttle hopeing noone would notice it forgot scarabs.
P2A^Squash, thinking that 2 goons would be enough to defend his expansion, sent the rest of his massive force to take out NCG`Jinmaster’s main.
Now NCG`Jinmaster’s is mineral rich and gas poor, so he does the only thing he can to defend his main, cannons. However with the size of P2A^Squash’s marching army, a few cannons cannot hold them off.

NCG`Jinmaster’s 4 goons are pounding on P2A^Squash’s expansion and finally tear it down, but it really doesn’t matter. P2A^Squash has more than a dozen goons inside NCG`Jinmaster’s undefended main. Without gas, it is over for NCG`Jinmaster .
