Mogalin vs. Goz-X17

Introduction

The new Tao B.Net version 1v1 ladder recently started and I was among the first 100 to sign up. However, the vast majority of all those who had signed up had still not played a game yet. I played two quick games vs Activus (one which I won ZvT and one which I lost TvP) and I was up to rank 14. The Tao ladder is very different and I will attempt to explain it here.

Once you win a game after you are unranked, you get the very bottom position on the ladder (right now that's about 80). If you play people below you, you lose nothing if you lose and gain nothing if you win, except maybe to increase your streak or winning percentage. However, playing people above you reaps generous rewards. Say you are #10 and you play #1. If you lose, nothing happens. If you win though, you gain half the rungs inbetween the two of you. Sound good? Good.

Say hello the the first BR with a musical selection!

This is a nifty lil' tune I call "DunDun."

Anyways, the channel for the games, Clan Tao-BNet is almost always empty and the attendance of ranked players is insanely low. Hopefully this problem will be remedied in the future, but for now most of the games can be found in Clan -X17. So that is where I went.

I sat in x17 for about 2 minutes then opened Internet Explorer to see if I could recognize any people in x17 that were higher than me. I hopped over to the Tao-of-Gaming web page and I saw someone in x17 that was at ladder spot #7 - Goz-X17.

I asked him for a game and he replied using so many "=o"'s it would make Bob jealous. Here's a transcript:

Mogalin: Hey Goz u wna play a tao game?
Goz-X17: =o sounds good =o
Mogalin: Map pref?
Goz-X17: You pick =o
Mogalin: I'll be gay - Hunters it is
Goz-X17: =o

"Let the games begin!"

The Hunters
The game was really fast paced and I didn't take any SS's so this is the best I could do.
And we were off! I got Red Zerg in the bottom left position and my scouting Overlords would soon reveal to him to be the top left Blue Protoss. "Oh boy," I thought. "If I don't kill him early I have no chance!" So I took a chance to have a chance :P. 8 Overlord, 11 Hatch, 12 Pool, 12 Gas, 13 Hatch. This build let's me go for a 3 hatch Hydra strat (don't forget - it's Hunters). I put 4 on Gas and build 2 Sunkens to stop any zeal/probe attacks. I continue pumping Drones like a powering maniac.

My Overlord over his base reveals 3 gate zeals. I firgure my 3 hatch Hydras can own his Zeals, but you never know, he's an X17 and they're pretty durn good =o. I throw down a Den and right when it finishes start some Hydras while keeping up with my Overlord supply and researching speed right away so I can dart away from his put put zeals.

I take a quick glance at the minimap and Mr. Overlord is seeing a fairly large stream of blue departing. I have a ton of drones by now and about 8 Hydras. Incoming are 12 Zealots and about 4 probes. I rally my Hydras quickly to the center to begin wearing down the Zeals before they actually make it to the base while retaining decent micro by tapping 1sh 2sh 3sh along with the occasional Overlords. His Zeals keep coming though and a mighty battle is fought at my base.

His zeals overpower my hydras 1.5:1 but I have two sunkens and my Hydra army has been increased to about 12 due to some half-ass macro. I beat off the attack because his Zeals get stuck in my Drone line and he doesn't micro them to kill the drones so my two very weakened sunkens and 12 Hydras can stop the 4 remaining zeals easily. I pull my Olord out of his base when I see a finished Cybernetics Core.

Time to counter!

So I attack his main with my 12 Hydras. But, on Hunters, the top left main has a shared choke with the top middle and is surprisingly skinny. 2 Cannons and like 3 Zeals beat me up due to exceptional micro on his part and poor on my part. Back at home I have about 9 Hydras waiting. I start a Lair and one evo chamber.

So my counter was shit and he's expanding. I might as well too. I try to take my natural but Protoss forces keep comingin and raping it. I get a secret expansion at the bottom middle while keeping his forces at bay. I know he's gonna win this if I don't get a counter to his incoming storm or reavers (but probably storm).

Lurkers!

Lurkers! That's it! I have my new expansion up so there's a second source of gas along with my half-empty (or half-full heh) geyser at home, so I should be able to afford a good many a Lurkers.

I turn all 9 of my Hydras at home into Lurkers and move them the to just outside his double choke. I expand to the bottom right position, and finally get my main's natural working. I will soon have 4 sources of income (soon to be 3, main's almost dry) to his 2 (soon to be 1). Things are looking up again.

For no apparent reason, I throw down a Spire and a second evo chamber. I add Two more hatches at my main and am just constantly battering his choke. He has like 7 Temps but I send lings/hydra after ling/hydra after ling/hydra to it and he keeps turning up more cost efficient than I. It's time to do something different.

A drop. I load up 6 OL's with random troops and ship em off. But, when I get there.. there's about 10 goons and 3 Temps waiting for me at his main. That's... odd. But I haven't been idling at home. I send in a large attack to his choke that gets stormed to hell and my drop is unsuccessful as well. I realize to afford so much gas he must have taken the top middle position.

Why won't you die already!

I'm starting to get a bit nervous. He is gathering a large troop count and there's gonna be lots of Zerg ownin' temps. I add another 4 Hatches at my main and a Queen's nest for cracklings. I get a 3rd evo chamber to start zergling attack upgrades. I also send a naked drone to top right to expand but .. he dies .. to Cannons.

Ohhh shit I think. We're tied for income. My Lurkers keep his attack force contained sufficiently but he's going to have obs, and soon. My 9 Hatch macro at my main and 2hatches everywhere else produce a large amount of Hydras in a short amount of time. I rally them all to the center and then to my Lurker containment.

I drop two Lurkers in his top middle expansion and I kill a lot of Probes before he runs them. I get the Nexus' shields down but then Goons arrive.. and they shoot at me. Obs. The breakout will be imminent and then it comes..

...The Protoss infantry stormed (quite literally) out of the Top Left and Top Right Bases. The Zerg Forces attacked with all their might but lost a great number to the psionic power. Lurkers groaned as they turned belly up and Hydras split in half from Zealot blades. Zerglings tore into the mental flesh of the High Templar sending them back to Aiur. The Zerg forces held, but at a loss...

Well, if a picture is worth a thousand words that's about a tenth of a picture. It was quite a battle, and after that Goz-X17 declared: That's it =o.

His great breakout had failed. I had survived. Things were looking up again.

Mog comes back

Adding another two hatches to my main and researching Cracklings due to my just finished Hive, I send about 40 Hydras to his Top Right expansion and they levelled it, but took great losses to 3 exceptionally well placed storms. I make several unsuccesful Mutalisk attacks but my Cracklings from around 20 Hatches now 2/3 and my Hydras 3/3 quickly batter down his choke. I finally win..!!!!!!!!

Conclusion

He reported his loss quickly and I took tenth place on the Tao Ladder. In the morning I had fallen to 13, but that was OK, I had beaten one of the better players on all of B.Net in a matchup that Protoss is supposed to win.

Final scores were surprisingly close due to the pure owning of storm. He had like 4x my unit score and I produced over 1000 units. The game time was 32:49.

Lessons Learned

  • This was just a strategic report, not a pretty one.
  • Storm owns.
  • Out expanding a Protoss is a good plan.
  • Storm owns.
  • I beat Goz-X17.
  • Storm owns.

  • Storm owns.

    The End!
