I was bopping between NoHunters and the public games when I see a little Temple one on one. The guy says he's between beginner and intermediate, so asked if I'd stick around after the battle to help him out. Sure, I say.
My Cerebrate spaws with a splat at the 12 o'clock suck position and I find the Protoss encamped at the 3 o'clock. With my overlord hovering I notice my opponent is not only ignoring gas production, but is widely spacing his pylons and gateways in a way very accomodating to scampering zerglings.
[End of Battle: "Don't make your main into suburbia."]
Ok, thinks I, I'll just play around a bit, don't want to squish this guy. I'm no expert, but a few weeks playin with the NoHunters boys has got my mind right.
I expand quick to my natural, put up some sunkens and lay out a couple dozen zerglings to run interference. My OL stays in place, he makes no cannons, and doesn't expand.
[EoB: "Try out cannons, I think you will be pleased with their efficiency"]
I repulse a couple, large scale zealot attacks while heading straight for my Hive. Big mistake. I was playing nice and would soon be burned by it.
My cracklings swarm in, wipe out the expansion that he had just started, along with all the zealots he had left. Ok, I retreat to give him a chance to recover. Dumb. He says: "I'm dead." The game goes on.
A few minutes later, while I'm dicking around another expansion at the 9 o'clock sweet spot, and another hatchery at the top of my ramp, in come 4 corsairs and a mixed bag of DTs and zealots. My sunkens make short work of the zealots, but the corsairs start whacking my OLs with alacrity, while the DTs hack on my sunkens. DTs die, more DTs arrive. Many OLs die. In my laziness I don't build a single spore colony (idiot!). So, what few OLs I have left fly to distant parts of the board, some are hunted down.
Trying to save face while his DTs hack my Hive to nothing, I say "See, you aren't so bad after all." We talk a bit about the game as he finishes off my main. I feverishly develop my last expansion at the 9 o'clock, putting up a new Pool and plenty of sunkens and spore colonies. I throw up another exp at the 6 o'clock. I had plenty of minerals because I (duh!) wasn't building many troops. This game is about war and killing and stuff, right?
The first wave of lings comes off the line and head straight to his main. Nice thing is, they were still fully upgraded (adrenalin, 3/3, speed) though I had almost no buildings. The lings rush in, crush his archives, then go straight for the nexus. Zealots die, peons die, then lings die. In his rush to defend his main he spent too many minerals, so couldn't rebuild his nexus. Game over.
To his credit, he put together an exceptionally effective offensive against the zerg. To my discredit, I put my feet up and cracked open a soda when I should have been attacking.
We talked for a bit at the end, me moving zerglings around to show him where I would defend the choke, position buildings for main defense, etc. Then, I crushed his last building and went to bed.
