Well this is my 1st battle report, so please be patient and understanding.
I logged onto b-net and went to my usual channel online hoping to get into a game with my friends there. When I got there, I saw there was around 6 of us and someone suggested a 3v3. Well, that was fine to me as I was looking forward to some good vanilla SC.
The game was soon created and all 6 players logged in, but before it could begin one player dropped and couldn't come back. So I offered to observe and write a battle report for the game, this was accepted so I switch to terran to float my CC into a corner.
Game: Vanilla SC
Game Type: Melee
Map: Char Magma
Teams:
K, Brown, Zerg, Bottom middle
&
L, Turquoise, Zerg, Top right
Vs
T, Red, Protoss, Bottom right
&
D, Yellow, Terran, Middle Right
There is a slight pause as the commanders exchange GL's and HF's and then the contest begins. The game starts with K morphing his hatchery at the bottom middle starting spot, with his partner L creeping into the top right position. T warped his noble nexus in at the bottom right position, with his partner D landing his CC at the middle right position.
All commanders decide upon a standard approach to their build orders with no weird or radical ideas. T gets his pylon followed by a gateway which is soon followed by another gateway. D decides he needs to work his supply first and has his SCV work on building a supply depot then two barracks. Meanwhile both K and D decide to get a pool and a sunken for defense. All commanders bring in as many workers as they can to help mine the minerals close by.
Scouts are sent out by all players, K's overlord floats to the NW finding no one, but does find an expansion. L sends a lord to his west, but all he finds is another expansion as well. T sends out a probe which finds K and reveals some of the base before being sent back to Aiur by a zerg sunken. D sends a lone scv out and discovers L just above him. Soon more scouts are send out by all players and shortly after K and L discover T's position.
The two cerebrates talk amongst themselves for a second and decide to use their zergling warriors that they have just hatched to attempt to overwhelm the noble protoss commander. The orders are sent and the lings run towards
T's base. Due to distance between the allies, K's lings get to T first and they engage the brave zealot there, who falls under their onslaught but not before taking a few with him to their deaths. A few probes also give their lives in defense of the base . While this goes on another brave zealot warps into the battle field, joining the battle and eradicating the ling threat.
Shortly after this, L's lings enter the fray, but are no match for the 3 lots that T has been able to muster for this battle. L can be heard to mutter "Dammit, my lings wouldn't attack! they don't listen to me..."
After this failed attempt by the zerg cerebrates, the commanders decide to restock their position and reorder their troops.. L decides he wish's to harness the gas to produce a more effective and powerful army to use against the opposition commanders. L also throws up a 2nd hatchery with a few more sunkens hoping to out produce is opposition and defend home base. .K also decides to get gas for use in his attempt to eliminate the enemy.
While on the other side, D decides that he might wish to enhance his troops by starting a gas refinery D decides that while gas is coming in he needs a 3rd barracks for his marine production needs. He also gets an academy as soon as he has the spare cash. T starts up a forge, which is soon followed by a couple of cannons.
At this time, the terran and toss commanders decide to execute a raid into K's base and see what mayhem they can cause. Sending in many marines and zealots they find that K's base is lightly defended by 2 sunkens and many lings. K's lings put up a brave fight with the sunkens' support and manage to eliminate a few of the invading soldiers, as more eggs with lings can be seen forming to try and fight off the invasion.
Calls for help are sent and L sends a lot of lings at K's base in an attempt to help, but due to the distance they never make it. K bravely continue's trying to fight, throwing up 2 more sunkens after his lings are turned into a bloody mess. The new sunkens don't do much damage as the overwhelming terran and toss forces push through the base eliminating anything zerg that they see. Soon "K is eliminated" can be seen. D can be seen saying "oooopppss...."
Seeing that his partner has been viciously murdered, L pulls his lings back to his base while throwing up a hydra den to bring in hydra to combat the assault that surely will be coming soon.
At this interval in the action T decides to get a cybernetics core for goons.. He also realizes he'll need gas and warps in an assimilator. D starts on a factory, for he knows that the mighty siege tank will be needed against the offensive zerg left on this world.
As this was happening, unknown to T and D, L sent of a lone drone and started a 2nd hatchery at one of the expansions hoping to fund his war machine so that he could beat the odds against him. T and D decide that now would be a good time to strike L, and mass their forces in L's natural ex, knowing L wouldn't have had time to build anything too deadly, in their opinions.
Sending in quite a number of marines and lots they discover a small force of lings backed by 3 sunkens. They also see several hydra lined up behind the sunkens..They confer for a second and send in their troops, trying to
eliminate the pesky sunkens before they can do too much damage. Quite a few brave marines and lots are sent off the battle field in body bags as they move into the base. L fights on bravely, trying to use his sunkens to best
advantage as well as producing more hydra, to try and help take out this attack.
Like what happened with K though, T's and D's units were able to push through all of L's defenses and units, and reduce the two hatcheries to big blobs of blood. In a cheeky show of scorn, D brought in a scv and had it
attack the lone refinery while in came a tank which proceeded to siege and destroy the hydra den which was still there by the gas.
Realizing that he stood no chance against these two well organized opponents now that his partner was out and his main was destroyed, and feeling an army of marines, lots, goons and tanks moving towards his new base; the zerg
cerebrate, L, calls for terms of surrender. Feeling pleased with themselves and in a benevolent mood both T and D accept the terms of surrender and GG's are exchanged between the commanders as they leave the scene to resume the fight elsewhere at some other time..
Notes:
- a force of marines and lots together running into a zerg base is very bad for the zerg early on unless they can get help from their partner.
- sunkens should cover each other or be backed up with troops, as L&K showed that covered sunkens are more deadly than sunkens alone.
- this was a quick game, which often happens when teammates aren't able to defend each other.
- terran/toss combo is deadly - the lots are brilliant for melee fighting and marines cover them from a distance.
- upgrades are not needed for your units unless the game gets into mid/late ( maybe delete this, didn't relate to our game, unless someone upgraded early) game. Early on it won't make any difference.
- in team games, if your far apart from your partner play a bit more cautiously unless you have the other team on their knees - if you get attacked and need help, it will take longer to get there.
- if your going to double attack someone, try to make sure you do it right.Timing and being together is essential. Had K and L's lings attacked at the same time they would have done a lot more damage, since they attacked 6 at a time T was able to fend them off by micro'ing his lot and 3 probes until his second lot came. And he just overpowered the 2nd wave of lings.
- if you eliminate 1 person in a 2v2 team, try a quick hit upon the other as they probably won't be ready for it or not fully ready if you hit early enough, unless they have already turtled.
- and as always, scout early and as much as possible.
Well, that's it for now.
I hope I'll be able to bring you better report next time, and a BR about a much longer game than this - it lasted all of 15-20 minutes max.
Comments and suggestions welcome.
