"I know you're probably sad, because now you have to go back to watching Star Trek and hanging out with your mom. But don't worry, it'll be okay. Maybe one day down the road I'll get bored again. And maybe on that day, I'll write another battle report. Maybe even with someone as gay (but hot) as Dag again. Or maybe I'll die of liver problems at 25." -SCN

Dream Control Section: C - Irregular Patterns
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Calvin expected to open his eyes and be home. He expected to feel the soft mattress beneath his body, the cool sheets wrapping themselves around him, and the overhead fan whirring softly. But we all know that what we expect is never what we get. Instead, Calvin opened his eyes to view hands. Grey hands hovering over his skull, almost as if some creature was trying to suffocate him but was being detained by an invisible force field. It was the screaming that eventually brought Calvin to his senses. He realized that the hands above him belonged to Skinner, and that she was trying desperately to save his lungs from the toxic air that threatened to infect them. The past hours events then came flooding back in a wave of memories. The Goliath suit, the Terran settlement, the attack force, the Protoss, the battle, Dark Templar, Skinner. It was almost too much for Calvin to handle. And rather then try to process it all, he elected to sit back and wait for rejuvenation.
He did not wait long. Ralston, the SCV, had been one of the few troops to survive the recent encounter. After repairing the damages to Gainey's suit, he quickly hurried over to where Skinner was screaming and began to repair Calvin. It did not take him long. When the missile impacted, it had sent a shockwave into the earth surrounding Calvin, causing his entire body to tremor and be thrown backward. His faceplate had become cracked by the impact, and Calvin was extremely lucky that his faceplate had not shattered entirely, else he would have perished for sure. The pain Calvin had felt had been caused by the Dark Templar. When it had realized there was no way it was going to survive, the Templar had done a last ditch attack, and had plunged its elongated warp blade directly into the left side of Calvin's torso. Again, Calvin had been lucky, though the blade had pierced the armor entirely, it had only grazed Calvin's actual skin. Deep enough to cause pain, but not a mortal wound.
Ralston quickly patched the damaged faceplate with bionic tape, and repaired the gaping hole in the suit's armor, using several pieces of scrap metal from the past battle, as well as his experienced fusion cutters. Once repaired, Calvin climbed to his feet. He found that he was a little wobbly, but after a few minutes, he had regained his composure. A quick scan told him that few had survived. Gainey, Skinner, Ralston, himself, and Boyer, a Siege Tank driver had been the only survivors of the once elite troop. Calvin felt little remorse over the fact that all marines had been brutally slaughtered, and their remains littered the ground. He was focused on the fact that Skinner had survived, and he had saved her life. "A hero", he thought, "I am a hero." His joys were short lived.
It had barely been five minutes since the initial attack, and already reinforcements were arriving from the Protoss main. Calvin knew there was no way they could withstand another attack. Ralston and Skinner were essential useless, as well as helpless, and Gainey hadn't issued a command, much less moved since Calvin had regained consciousness. He assumed it was because Gainey was suffering the agony of having lost human lives under his command. Boyer seemed alright though, but a Tank and a Goliath were no match for the three Archons that had just cleared the bluff.
Calvin's trained mind kicked into action. He immediately ordered Ralston to climb onto the back of the Siege Tank, and bury his fusion cutters into the hull of the machine. This would allow him a secure position when the time had come to flee. And that time was growing nearer. The Archons were closing on the small company fast, and Calvin could tell that they were hell bent on avenging their brother's deaths. Scooping Skinner up in his arms as if they were crossing the threshold into their new home, Calvin desperately tried to snap Gainey out of his transfixed state.
"Commander. Command Gainey sir?" he said. "Protoss Archons are closing on our position fast, I recommend retreat sir!"
Gainey did not reply, but instead rose dutifully to his feet, and turned to face the energetic warriors. He then said: "Get out of here now soldier. Return to base and tell them the rest of you have been killed in action. Me included." And with that, the two missile silos arose from his shoulder storage compartments.
Not being one to argue his superior, Calvin quickly began to sprint into the horizon, toward the main encampment. Motioning Boyer to follow him, Calvin galloped across the charred earth, his large chrome feet relentlessly pounding into the ground and rising the dormant ash that covered it. He turned back only once to view how his leader was doing. It turned out that Gainey had not been mourning after the first attack. He had instead been devising a plan to destroy the Archons.
Gainey had noticed that for the Archons to get to him, one of them would surely have to cross under a small rock outcropping. Watching the approaching adversaries with great caution, Gainey had positioned himself in a way that he had a clear shot of the cliff's edge. He had also determined that he could fire another missile into the ground before the beasts, creating a big enough diversion for him to escape with his life. Unfortunately, his plan had flaws.
The Archons approached exactly according to Gainey's plan. When one of them was directly beneath the rock roof, Gainey released a Charon missile straight into the side of the cliff. The explosion it created shook the edge so much, the rocks broke free of their prison and landed squarely on top of the Archon.
Smiling at his accomplishment, Gainey turned to complete the second portion of his task. He fired his remaining missile into the ground a few feet in front of the two advancing energy balls. His aim was true, and the missile created a giant ash cloud obstructing both races from viewing each other. Gainey turned to flee, and here he made his vital mistake. The cloud had in fact caused two of the Archons to pause in their tracks and wait for it to clear, rather then risking a blind charge. The rock covered Archon that Gainey had perceived dead, sent back to wherever Protoss units originate from, had other plans. The rocks had caused it quite a bit of discomfort, but no real damage. And after incinerating several of the larger boulders, it was able to free itself. The Archon then began a counter move. While Gainey had been concentrating on the second missile shot, it had slowly crept around to the side of the unsuspecting Terran, and when he turned to flee, the Archon had only a few paces to cover before arriving in attack range.
Gainey's last sound was an ear splitting scream, that reached the ears of the now distant Calvin, and chilled him to the core.
With all three Archons remaining, and all three of them severely pissed off, Calvin knew their only hope was to reach the safety of the base. After watching Gainey die in a flash of plasma, Calvin had yet to look back, fearing that the Archons were right behind them, waiting to fry their skin, and melt their bones. It seemed like a year passed before the small band reached the ramp at the base of the camp. Sprinting up it as fast as his Goliath suit allowed, Calvin was the first to view the mayhem.
The entire camp had been destroyed. Several supply depots remained standing to the left, all of them on fire, and as Calvin watched, two of them exploded into a fireball of metal and rubber. The Command Center, Barracks, Starport, and Science Facility were gone, and Calvin hoped they had lifted off into outer space, and not been destroyed. All the was left was a Comsat station, the before mentioned depots, an Academy, and a Factory, which seven Zealots were busy tearing at.
Upon seeing the Zealots, Calvin slowly began to back peddle, but he tripped over Boyer, who was just now coming up the ramp. The sudden motion of Calvin's bulk stumbling caught the eye of the proud Zealots, who turned and began to advance on the crew. Calvin's eyes wandered in search of some sort of salvation, but what they saw instead was the three Archons that had followed them from the bluff. Trapped on both sides, Calvin knew that there was little hope of any of them surviving the inevitable battle.
