My First (and Last) Online Tiberium Sun Game

(EDITOR’S NOTE- I posted another Article Comparing TS to Starcraft, apologies for not posting it on a forum and on the BR section)

Well, it all started out on one rainy morning. I was calling every SC player I know and asking for a game, and after checking out B. Net I pretty much gave up on finding a good game. Then I decided to try something new, something different...I wanted to play Westwood Chat! (A TS Battlenet) So, pulling out my copy TS (yes, after trying to sell it for a month no-one wanted it) and putting it in my hard drive, and going through the long, tedious registration I finally got online. Surfing down the list of games, I got banned almost as soon as I joined and when I didn’t get banned the lag dropped almost everyone. One game though, only two of the players got dropped! Three human players and one AI player.

The map was called ‘The River Runs Near it ’; it’s a map when every start location is on a little plateau that is separated from the other plateaus by rivers. There are two entrances to each one, and each one has one Tiberium patch (they are like minerals and Vespene Gas, since there is only one resource. There is Blue Tiberium, which is only normal Tiberium but gives you twice the amount of money when you mine it) on the plateau and two around it. There are several bridges.

The players were:

SmurfyKane (Known as Kane)- NOD- Top Center- Light Blue
Neal654 (ME)- GDI- Bottom Right- Purple
MrSmith (known as smith) – Randomed NOD – Mid Left - Orange
Red AI- GDI – Bottom Center- Red

I used the build order of powerplant, power turbine (makes powerplant give fifty percent more energy), Tiberium Refinery/harvester (harvester comes with refinery, since only one harvester can be at the refinery at a time, it helps to have more then one), barracks, war factory, radar dome, power plant, power plant, turbines for all of them, and then eight RPG launchers (they do tons of damage to armored units and infantry, sort of like sunken colonies) at each choke point.

Now that I had lots of Defense, I made some more harvesters from the War Factory (it is used to make all armored units) to speed up getting Tiberium. Soon, I made five jump jet infantry, which are like little flying marines, and I sent them scouting. I stumbled on a battle between the red ai and Kane. Red AI had eight light infantry battling four obelisks (these are the more powerful version of an RPG launcher, it kills most things in one hit). I decided to continue scouting.

My plan was to go Orca Bombers. They are pretty much unstoppable since one bomb does 150 damage in a 2 square radius, and each one carriers five sets of four bombs! First, I expanded to the Blue Tiberium Patch. Since the tech level (tech level is how advanced units you can get, you can only receive less and less advanced units as the lower the tech level gets.) was on nine, I had to re-deploy my Construction Yard (the building you start out with. There is an option that allows you to make the Construction yard re-deployable. This means you can move it around. Ofcourse, if you loose your CY, you are pretty much screwed because you cannot build any more buildings.) As soon as I got two new refineries running at the expansion, along with some power plants, I brought my CY back to my main base. In the nick of time, to, because about twenty-five Titans (heavy armored units) plowed through it, killing the two RPG launchers I had made there just for a little Defense. I quickly got my eight orca bombers and killed them all with minimal trouble. These Titans belonged to Red AI.

I then checked the scores. They are as following:

KANE- 135 kills
ME- 23 kills (YIPEE)
SMITH- 129 kills
Red AI- 52 kills

I concluded that the other players were duking it out. I quietly made eight more helipads and then build bombers for each one of them. I soon got attacked by Kane, but Artillery does not fare well against orca bombers (artillery are a lot like siege tanks, they have to be put in firing mode, they do tons of damage and have immense range, but can’t attack air. One major difference between the two is the fact artillery can’t attack unless deployed!) and soon were put to death. By now I had sixteen bombers, and since fog of war was turned of, I attack Kane, killing four advanced powerplants (advanced powerplants are like normal powerplants except give fifty % more energy), his Construction Yard (HAHAHAHAHA HE IS DEAD), War factory, Barracks, and two Tiberium refineries. Then, after waiting for my bombers to reload on their helipads for a few minutes, I attacked again, killing his Radar Tower, Tech Center (a building used to gain the ability to make advanced units) and four obelisks. He promptly said obscene words and left the game.

Now I had 58 kills, and I planned to continue. I launched an all out attack against Smith, killing his War Factory and a Refinery, and coming painfully close to killing his CY. ARG! He had so many SAM sites though (missile turrets) he killed half my bombers! I promptly rebuild more then I had to begin with, now having twenty. I divided them up, one group with orders to target the power plants, and the next to wipe out his major buildings. This was a good plan, because power plants power SAM sites, without them he would have no defense.

The plan went like clockwork, and I pretty much demolished his base. He said he had another base but I just laughed and finished him off. As I checked the scores, I found he was still alive, but the Red AI had gotten eliminated somehow. After searching in vain for his last unit for about twenty-five minutes, I finally killed his last guy, making me the winner.

Well, the game took one hour and forty-five minutes, was not very fun, was extremely laggy, and since it was a TS game, was extremely gay. I promptly exited it out of Westwood, never to return again. Well, I hope you know that the way to win is to make tons of RPG launchers and turtle in, and make orca bombers.

Thanks for reading,
Neal 64
