Why do we play Brood War? I do it because I enjoy the challenge, all the strategy involved, and the community that it has. It’s really fun to play, but sometimes things can get a little bland. The entrance of D2 caused people who have played Brood War everyday to get a kick out of this game, but to be honest, it doesn’t give my mind a challenge like it Brood War does, unless you play with ::Nobody:: or POA.
Anyway lately I have been doing quite well with zerg, and not just in NH. Kali, KBK(until they removed my tag :-[ ), and –x17(Which isn’t saying much ;-]) I have lost to terrans and zergs, and to a small extent protoss. I am not boasting by any means. But on LostTemple to be honest I have done very well against all my opponents and if I do lose it isn’t a one-sided affair, in all matchups. This could because I have played average to above average players and not Elite to Godly players. Or it could just be that I am good. I believe that it is the quality of players.
So anyway I was in Kali one day looking to improve my game when I ran into {PH}Pillars, well more like I forced myself into him. I met him before and recently started to get to know him since our interaction with the Ultimate Starcraft Championship. So anyway we finally played ourselves a couple of games and I would like to share them with you.
Game 1
{PH}Pillars vs. Fox^1
Map: Lost Temple
Pillars of course Chooses Toss and I choose Zerg. I felt very confident in this matchup even though it was against someone as godly as Pillars. I started at the 6 and Pillars started at the 12. My build order went like this.
9 Overlord
12 Hatch at expansion
11 Pool
12 second hatch at expansion
Gas
I have studied Pillars and I knew that in Protoss vs. Chosen Zerg he always tried to Zealot rush, so I did an earlier pool then normal to combat this. My scouting overlord finally arrived at his base and I saw 2 gates working and zealots coming out of them. I started to get lings, drones and 1 sunken. Pillars came in with 3 zealots he saw that I had a good defense and moved them away. I thought that he would not try to attack and I got more drones.
He then comes in later with 6 zealots notices my 1 sunken is far away enough so that he can harass some drones I notice this myself and bring my lings and drones to scare him away while putting down a second sunken. This attack scares me a little and I get a few more lings instead of drones. At this time my hydra den has just finished, and I am getting 3 hydras.
So then Pillars comes down again to harass my 16 lings, 2 sunken, 10 drone defense with 10 zealots. He then runs off knowing it will not be cost effective. But then immediately comes down with 2 more zealots totally giving him 12. They are spread out so that they can engage the lings better.
I make a mistake by engaging the zealots. I should have instead let them try to engage the sunkens, and then micro the lings. This may have cause him to retreat giving me the needed to get enough hydras to push him away and get the 6 mineral only. Unfortunately information like this would have been helpful while the game was going.
He micros very well and I do my best, but unfortunately my micro < Pillars micro. He takes out the sunkens as fast as he can, without getting hammered by lings in the back. After he takes the second sunken zealot speed and +1 are done for him. I did have a few hydras, but The game is obviously over as 1 zealot and 2 goons come in and end it.
Basically Pillars kept the pressure on me and dictated play. Forcing me to get another sunken, forcing me to have enough lings, forcing me to micro all the while he is teching without any pressure from me. This game was quick not lasting over 15 minutes.
Reasons for my loss
1. I did not get his zealots out of the way, I should have massed more then 16 lings and dispatched his zealot force outside of my choke or at least caused him to run away to give me some breathing room.
2. Engaging those lings was a dumb move on my part, I don’t know what I was thinking. Unfortunately giving a player of Pillars caliber an opportunity like that is a bad thing.
3. Playing Pillars
Reasons for Pillars winning
1. Putting pressure on me. This guy knows that as zerg if I dictate play, then I will most likely win. So he puts it upon himself to control the game, make me do what he wants me to do. This shows you why he is at this level.
2. When he finally comes in to attack I engage my lings first, he then knows that he is going to take down my defense. He looks for any opening and takes advantage of it.
3. Playing Fox^1
After he defeated me I gave him a GG and told him REMATCH HOST IT FASTER THX GW!!!! :D
He in turn said YES!
Game 2
{PH}Pillars vs. Fox^1
Map: Lost Temple
This game was going to be different. I really enjoyed game 1. Pillars was a perfect gentleman even though he made me look like a newbie, and we had a few laughs about it. I was hoping to prove him otherwise this game. I started at the 3 with zerg of course, and Pillars started at the 9 with toss. My build was a bit different.
13 Hatch
12 Pool
13 Hatch
Gas
I noticed in game 1 that he didn’t bring any probes to attack, which was ok with me because that would let me power just a little more, although that’s what he was doing at his base. He comes in with the early zealot on my first hatch and starts to tag it, I attack with my 6 lings and he retreats. I do not follow because I know 2 more are on the way and I do not want to lose my lings. I get more lings about 12. When he shows about with 4 zealots, and then retreats. I get a sunken, more drones, and 4 more lings. I put down another hatchery and I am powering a little harder then before.
The 3 position’s choke is tight, and he cannot spread out his zealots like he did the first game, I think that’s what gave me breathing room to get a better economy online. I stop lings at about 20 with 1 sunken behind the hatchery. I am prepared to micro them well and have a hovering overlord outside my choke to notice the amount of zealots he has. I don’t look out and then he comes in with 12. I didn’t notice he had that many, from me trying to mass more drones, get a hydra den. He comes in against my 20 lings and 1 sunken. I feel that I am ok. I attack with lings and micro well and get more lings, I was able to surround the zealots and although I lost almost all my lings and my sunken, I was able to quell the attack.
My scouting overlord finally made it to his expansion and saw that he was getting himself an expansion of his own. I massed more drones and started to get hydras. As soon as my speed was done, I ran to his base and attempted to stop the expansion attempt. I had about 11 hydras and 8 lings. I ran into his zealot force of about 9 and was able to push him back. I finally killed all but 3 of his zealots, which retreated. He had no defending units so I pounded on the nexus and expanded to the 12 main and natural.
Side note on the expansions: I did not bring an overlord over there for detection. Notice that the word DeTection has DT in it? -Foreshadowing-
While I was pounding on his nexus I was horrified to see something I would like to call a Psionic storm hitting my hydras, I ran them as fast as I could, but I lost many of them and ran them off to reinforcing hydras. Just as I ran Pillars put like 100 Billion probes on mining, I wanted to stop it but I needed more hydras, so I engaged him again, with about 14 hydras. I microed like a one armed gymnast on the rings and lost my hydras.
I sat outside his base until I had about 18-22 hydras and tried to come in. 2 DT’s started to hack away at me and I retreated bring my overlord over his expansion into the fray. This didn’t help much because a decent storm and legged zealots pushed me away. Then I noticed a DT hacking at my expansions at 12 killing all my drones. I brought over a slow overlord and started to morph a sunken while he was pounding on the hatch, which finally was able to kill the DT and I brought drones to mine me minerals.
I was starting to lose. He got his mineral only and we had the same mineral intake, except he had storm and I did not. I attacked again with 24 hydras and 12 lings, but this time had more then enough goons and storm to push me away with no problem. He then countered to my 12 main exp taking that down, and it was elementary from there. He comes to my main storming and rips everything down. What I then noticed just made me smile. Through all this conflict we had and me almost tearing down his expansion His upgrades were 2/0/1. While mine were 0/0 I just shook my head and smiled. I knew that he was good, but now I know how much. GG’s were exchanged and I was able to talk a little with him after the game.
He told me that when my hydras were attacking that I had the game right there, he said if you microed you would have won. He thought that I didn’t, when in fact I did, just about as efficient as a parachute that opens on impact. He also told me that overlords over expos are needed. If he didn’t tear my drones down with that DT I would have been ok.
Reasons for my loss
1. Playing Pillars
2. Playing Pillars
3. Microing like a BGH newbie
4. Not putting my overlord over the expos
5. Playing Pillars
6. Not getting upgrades
Reasons for Pillars winning
1. He is Pillars
2. He played Fox^1
3. Fox^1 micros like a BGH newbie while Pillars micros like… Well Pillars
4. He didn’t panic when I was tearing his expo down with hydras
5. He got upgrades
6. He had storm :-[
Thanks to Pillars for the games. After losing both games I was very excited to play again. I wanted to practice harder and improve my game even more. I felt rejuvinated from losing! Isn’t that awesome? I hope that Brood War brings you joy like it does me. Hope you enjoyed my all text report. Watch out people I am getting better!
