The Stand: Part 1 The Stand: Part 1
He opened his eyes, once again looking over the horizon. The field of battle. It was a new place, a new day, a new battle. They, he & his comrades, had been on the run for the past few weeks, trying to evade the pursuing band of Zergs, while using the scorched earth's tactic. This place was unlike anything else he'd seen. Green grass, flowing rivers and wild animals was something they had not seen before. Maybe this would be where the tide turned. He hoped so.

One thing he knew for sure was, that the attacking band had brought two yet untrained commander along, so they could learn from a real battle. Alas, so did his own little band. They had picked up a protoss and a terran band of forces, just east of the ground, on which they now stood. He knew deep inside, that whoever who battle, was the one with the ability to teach while attacking. He felt that the battle was close; the order to unfold was given.

Not before long, the entire area, known only to common men as "The Hunters", due to the fact that most battles fought there, would turn into a game, in which the hunter would soon be the hunted., was sizzling with activity. Himself, controlling a band of protoss, started by securing that no matter what, there would always be fundings in the box for purchase of more equipment. In the top of his nexus he could see his probes get to work, and soon the mighty buildings of two gateways were casting their shadows on the ground. Suddently he felt the earth tremble, and a loud scream over the radio, as his long-time friend, Darkfox, called for the aid of his friends. He had been the unfortunate person to receive the mark. The mark that stated that he would be the first to go...

After the few initial assaults, mainly performed by zerglings (though there WAS reports on the sightings of a monkey in between), there was a brief period, in which Darkfox's sole remaining sunken colony rested and regained strength. He had expected the 6 zerglings, and he knew that he would be unable to keep the sunken's alive, should more forces enter his creep. With a trembling hand, he called for reinforcements; the only answer coming from far asouth from his friend [~Damm~], where he was promised a 5-man patrol of zealots as well as 2 more, as soon as they arrived throught the gateway.

The ground was still trembling when the zealots arrived and found that most of Darkfox's base had been assaulted, yet only 2 zerglings were alive to continue, after the rest had been killed off by the sole sunken colony. By the aids of the zealots' Psi Blades, the zerglings were sent to the eternal fields of death. Darkfox's remaining drones immidiatly reassumed the construction, while the zealots took up position. After a few moments the earth once again trembled, but this time the zealots were ready with their Psi Blades drawn and the battle was over before it had begun.

From atop his nexus, [~Damm~] was able to see his own base thriving. As the alarm sounded he could see the small bodied zerglings trying to make their way through the 2 zealots on guard. A quick push upon a button recalled the 7 zealots from their duty and they made their way home. As the situation was, they would not be back in time. If only they would be back in time to save the precious probes from harm. They failed. Of the original 20 probes, only 4 remained in working condition after the assault had been quelled, and he decided to let them convert from gas mining to mineral cutting. He would need every mineral he could get. It took but 5 more minutes, before the alarm sound was once again issued. Darkfox was once again being assaulted, this time by what seemed a mixed force of zergs. What seemed dominant was the rude force of mutalisk's being throwed at him, but Darkfox looked beyond the muta's and saw what worried him: Overlords. Where there are overlords, there a transport. And where there's transport, there's units. He would have to wait and see what was being used, until after the muta's had disappeared from his screen. Fortunantly, he had a large number of hydralisk's available, who made short work of the muta's. Beyond the muta's were lurkers; a typical zerg unit, however, many times it have been rendered useless against other zergs, due to the overlords ability to scan the ground for unknown sources. This was also the case here.

What followed was a brief period of skirmishes, in which the attackers gained a foothold on the center island. Now the defenders faced an abrubt problem, with no ability to ferry units back and forth. It would cost the Attackers dearly to try and hold it. Time would prove so.

[~Damm~] watched with concern as his two apprentices failed in almost every category of strategic warfare. Not only had one fallen behind in constructing a base, the other had apparently decided to watch the battle unfold without participating. He knew that trying to talk to the commanders would be a disaster, so he decided to give it a go for himself, moving a forward platoon ahead to secure ground. They would try to secure the small block of land which connected both him and one of his enemies to the main island. A forward post was set up, securing it with photon cannons, and as soon as the last cannon was in place, something appeard on the radar. The figure of a mutalisk appeared, and the Commanders first decision was to call upon the brave soldiers of Aiur; and so a squad of 12 dragoons were called upon, hoping that their cannons would be enough to down the muta's before their fury was unleashed upon the all-ground base.

As soon as the first 4 appeared, something odd happened. The muta's disappeared, only to show up at the 8-cannon forward post. Their attempt to clear the area failed, and so [~Damm~] was able to concentrate on containing his foe along with forces from TheLoser and Darkfox. Darkfox had, with the aid of 12 of [~Damm~]'s zealots managed to place a nydus canal, and had then transported 36 hydras in to contain, and eventually destroy Headflux. [~Damm~] decided to warp in some corsairs to help Darkfox, as well as trying to eliminate some of the various overlords hanging around his base. At first, 24 seemed as a good idea, but when the first 12 had been warped in and assigned to a group, the radar screen sounded an alert.

Before the containment of Headflux had begun, the 36 hydra's had mainly been engaged in trying to reassure the middle ground, to allow an easier way of transportation. With the withdrawal of these hydra's the enemy zerg's had once again regained their ground, allowing them to press upon the containment force from the rear. Some siege tanks from TheLoser eventually solved this, but it was to prove fatal that the middle had been lost.

Over the horizon, over Darkfox's base, a huge swarm appeared. It seemed that the 3 zerg forces had joined hand in providing a shield for the 12 guardians which were now piercing their way through Darkfox's base. [~Damm~] realized that this was a do-or-die situation, and so the 12, now fully upgraded, corsairs were given a course that lead over the rookie terran's base, hoping to find some friendly assistance. None was found, and as the corsairs charged towards the swarm of devourers, a prayer was cried toward Adun. On the ground, the other protoss force had heard the cry, and rallied his forces. In what appeard to be a single maneouvre, 36 hydralis's appeared from the nydus canal. They had been busy piercing Headflux's outpost, when the alarm went on, and so they had been recalled. The 36 hydra's proved the difference, and so the attack was repelled, but at the cost of the 12 corsairs, the 36 hydra's and most of Darkfox's production line as well as all of his drones. Having only 51 minerals left, it would be a tough struggle to regain the lost ground, but Darkfox set to work, and soon the base was once again thriving, most likely due to the 3 hatcheries who had been safe from the attack, due to their position far away from the rest of the base.

[~Damm~] was growing impatient, as he could see most of Headflux's base, but not muster the strength to assault it. Headflux even dared to retake his natural outpost. Something he was only able to do, due to Darkfox's hastly retreate. [~Damm~] then noticed what appeared to be one of Headflux's drones of course. It had positioned itself at the edge of Headflux's base, overlooking [~Damm~]'s coastal defense. A plan was hastly made, in which a Dark Archon would try and mind control the drone, hoping that an additional zerg would be able to turn the tide. Unfortunantly, a scout, which had been summoned to try and break the neck on the numerous terran valkyrie's spotted it, and without hesitation it started to fire. As a result of that, the drone fled, never to return. The scout pilot was given a suicidal mission as result of his action, sending him over a well defended area.

Suddently the alarm sounded for the third time, and once again it was Darkfox, who had just finished his rebuilding, who was being targetted.

In what seemed at the time as a small invasion force of 24 guardians, soon became one of the largest zerg forces ever seen by the defending side. Not even the battle of Char Magma, a battle that the defending side had won, had ever come this close (a report is coming soon!). It was certain that the zerg forces meant business this time, and that this would be their final onslaught. [~Damm~] rallied his 24 corsairs along with some arbiters and scouts. Even 12 dragoons were recalled from from the battle of the middle to try and contain some of the huge forces being put to action. Almost every flying attack-unit was represented. On the attacking side were at least 24 guardians, 36 devourers, a number of muta's, some valkyries, a couple of wraiths and at least 2 battlecruisers, the latter being trashed while en route by the 24 corsairs. On the defending side were hydra's, dragoons, scouts, carriers, corsairs, two arbiters as well as couple of observers. The huge swarm swept over Darkfox's base, and numerous attempts to keep them at bay failed. In the end, [~Damm~] had to withdraw from the battle, as Headflux had used the lack of containment forces to break out and attack [~Damm~]'s base with 4 ultralisks, closely guarded by 2 battlecruisers. The attack failed, as [~Damm~] had wisely left 12 fully upgraded zealots in his base, and as they plowed their way through the ultralisks a number of corsairs retuned to finish off the battlecruisers.

[~Damm~] realized that the battle was over for his friend, and instead tried to muster the strength to land enough forces to wipe out Headflux. A quick scan with a number of observers showed little chances, but 12 zealots along with 8 dragoons were dispatched. What followed can best be described as a remake of the Dieppe raid, where a handfull of units were thrown towards a superior forces in order to test their strength. 9 zealots and all of the dragoons went down to a mix of ultralisks, sunken colonies, hydra's and guardians, before the order to pull out was given. By then, it was to late...

Determined to regain some of the lost ground, 24 corsairs, of which 13 were veterans of the previous assault, were rallied in order to try and clear Darkfox's main so that he could return and rebuild for the third time. In the beginning everything went halo, but then, just as the corsairs started winning, and at a point actually killed off the devourers guarding the area, a new batch of devourers and muta's appeared at the site, and soon the corsairs went down. The remaining guardians moved on to Darkfox's new site and started pounding on his sole remaining buildings, the last to go being the newly erected hatchery. And soon his protoss protector, [Lappedykker], felt the wrath of the swarm as his buildings were the next to go. He left his nexus and escaped with the promise of revenge.

Now that the battle was down to 2 defenders against 4 aggressive attackers, both [~Damm~] and TheLoser saw little hope of winning. But determined to occupy the attackers long enough to give their friends time to escape, they strapped in and waited for the worst. And the worst came. As the first guardians and devourers approached TheLoser's base from the north, [~Damm~]'s sensors picked up massive terran forces just east of his base, and as the first battlecruisers appeared over the horizon he left his Nexus giving the order to fight until the last probe, his last words being: "Revenge will come..."
