The Last Dance at Lost Temple

It was the best of times and it was the worst of times as I casually strolled through the digital gardens of battle.net. The talk of the town was BGH and I was all but interested. I'm sorry but, I don't care what kind of genetic splicing you do to this map. You could turn it yellow, blue, green, to ice, pump it full of enough gas and minerals that it resembled a very nutritious borrito, this map will always be BGH and will always be the most overplayed game in the entire history of battle.net. I just lost my train of thought….wait…got it back. I continued my search for a decent game to report of and I stumbled upon a two players ready to do battle across the fields of the Lost Temple. A good map as any to report on althought it too is used quite a bit. No matter. I ask to report their game and they graciously agreed to my observation. Tyler_Six_Pack or Tyler from now on, choose to lead a zerg brood into battle. T147 choose to have his protoss add another W to his record. The game began with a zerg hatchery morphing at 12 and a Nexus warping in at 6.

Peons were ordered up and the task of mineral gathering was at hand. Tyler sent his ovie sarching clockwise and began a pool at around 9. T147 sent a probe scouting clockwise as well and began a humble pylon-gate-pylon build.

Soon both scouts had found the enemy. Tyler sent 6 lings to chase away the probe as T147 waited for a forge and then cannons to warp in. The overlord was withdrawn before the cannons could complete and escaped unharmed. The probe was sadly chewed up and was withdrawn from the zerglings colon's. By now Tyler had twelve lings at his ramp and T147 had a group of four zealots and two cannons at his ramp.

The action continued at the pace of molassas uphill in January as both players elected to expand and tech. Tyler took his natural and morphed a den and a chamber. He also laid down a defense of sunken and spore colonies at his natural and in his main. Once a lair had completed he began to research lurker aspect as he began to mass hydralisks. T147 had warped in a core, a facility, a bay and began warping in a Temple of Adun. He began massing goons and was researching the range upgrade.

Five more minutes passed and Tyler now had 6 lurkers and ten hydralisks. He loaded the 4 lurkers into ovies and sent the remaining lurkers, the hydras and the loaded ovies toward the 6 natural. He bunched his force outside the choke of the natural and floated the overlords to the cliffs next to the natural. A suicide ling was sent in to investigate the defenses. It found four cannons and about six goons. In reality T147 had twelve goons waiting next to the nexus. Tyler was confident of victory and sent the hydras in to kill the cannons. The force did kill off the cannons dispite the efforts of the goon. The lurkers burrowed and the hydras loked like they were about to swept over the line of goons. But soon the tide had turned as another group of twelve goons arrived from the main. They hydras were getting slaughtered and the lurkers were not causing enough damage. What T147 did not know was that he was doing exactly what Tyler wanted him to do. The loaded ovies dropped their cargo of 4 lurkers behind the nexus. The lurkers then burrowed behind the goon line. The goons broke formation and began to scramble. They were cut down by subterrainian spines and the zerg were victorious. The remaining five hydras and the six lurkers destroyed the nexus and headed for the ramp. They were greeted by a scarab and then another, then a psi storm erupted over their heads. The ravenous zerg force was now ravenous zerg goulash. T147 had been busy during the natural battle and had warped in a bay, archive and now had an observatory. Now it was his turn to play as he loaded eight shuttles with 4 high templar, 4 dark templar, 6 goons and 6 reavers. The attack squad headed out for the zerg main.

The shuttles arrived and broke formation just outside of the zerg main. The reavers headed toward the outlining cliffs with a goon and dark temp support. The high templar were carefully shuttled to the worker lines. The initial attack began with the use of the reaver forces. The reavers/goons/dark temps. were evacuated to the ground before the shuttles were blown fom the sky. The reavers torn into the sunkens and hydras that were surrounding them. The DT's and goons concentrated on the spore colonies. AT this moment the sky was filled with lightening as psi storm erupted over the mineral workers. Not one drone was spared from the slaughter and the victorious templar retreated to a corner to begin merging. Once reavers/goons/DT force killed the surrounding spore colonies were destroyed, observers were deployed to find lurkers. The attack was a complete success and now Tyler was in the fight for his life.

Tyler at the time had two lairs and four hatcheries. He had four lurkers and ten hydras as well as about 12 lings. His spire was 80% done but was almost in range of the reavers. T147 was now trying to kill that spire. A few sunkens managed to kill 2 of the 6 reavers but the four that remained were at full health. The goons and DT's were killed as they wandered to far into the main and were ambushed. Only the reavers remained and they were headed for the spire. Hydras were sent into battle first and the reavers oblitorated them. Then went the lurkers with similar results. Finally in an act of desparation Tyler loaded his lings into overlords and dropped them onto the reavers. This led to partial success and the lings were able to bring the reavers into semi yellow before being destroyed. However they did allow the spire to complete and every hatchery and lair was ordered to produce mutalisks. The spire was destroyed as well as a nest and a chamber. Before the carnage could get any worse three mutas arrived to kill the reavers. The attack had left the entire zerg base in disarray. Tyler began preparations to rebuild. But soon a reed alert sounded and your base is under attack echoed in his ears. He looked and saw two archons tearing into his spore colonies. His mutas were on route until two more shuttles deployed a mix of goons and reavers. T147 thought he had the game won. Key word being THOUGHT.

Tyler called upon all his mutaslisks and the huge flock of two control groups emerged from the fog of war. Amazing what six hatcheries can do. The flocks engulfed the intruders and left no trace of them after the battle. The archons fired energy blasts but they were just too slow. The goons ran back and forth in confusion. The reavers tried to run only to realize that they are fat bastards. The protoss die and the zerg laugh a hearty laugh.

The time of rebuilding for Tyler is short and sweet. He rebuilds his lost structures and his defenses. He expands three times. A hatchery erects at his mineral only, the corner island and at the 3 main. Soon money is pouring into the newly constructed hive and soon the powerful strains of zerg are born. A greater spire bursts into existance as well as a defiler mound. At the protoss end, T147 has been busy expanding. He takes his mineral only and the corner island but stops there. This surprises me since his once crippled enemy now has more expansions than him. As for pure power the scales tip in the favor of T147 who now has upgrade 1/2/2 carriers. He builds two control group fleets and is ready to finish what he started. The flying hot dogs head towards the zerg main with bad intentions on their highly advanced minds.

The carriers approach the main and are ready to strike when all of a sudden the carries are covered in red. The protoss are confused for little do they know but all zergs like their hot dogs with ketchup. Scourge rush forward for the first bite but do to acid reflux only looking at a hot dog causes them to burst. A flock of devourers fly in and they spray their famous zerg chili. Much like the chili found at seven eleven it too is purple. Mutalisks also wish to partake in the feast and they like a little pepper. They spray the dogs with a little too much and the hot dogs crumble under the weight of the condiments. Disappointed the zerg set out to find more hot dogs. Thoughts of "Perhaps the protoss have some hot dogs"enters their minds as well as that funky zerg beat of "I live for the swarm..obey the swarm…dadadada" and other funky zerg 70's beats.

The swarm is now headed for the protoss main. T147 scrambles for defenses and ships. By the time the guardians and devourers arrive he has two carriers, four corsairs and ten cannons. The gardians begin to wear down the cannons as a combo of scourge, acid spores and mutas tear apart the protoss air. The mutas then gegin to hunt down goons and templar. They evade storms and manage to kill off the gates in the main. The guardians begin to pound the main and soon it is nothing more than wreckage and blue smoke. The mineral only soon falls and the natural is eliminated with no losses. All that remains is the island expansion which is found by a few passing mutas. As the zerg are surrounding the base, T147 admits defeat.

And as the victory raises his arm in triumph I sit back and think about what could have been:

Expansions are key have too few expansions could mean the difference between victory or death

Combining zerg attacks is what makes them so strong, defilers by themselves can't take down carriers, but combine them with scourge, devourers and mutas and you have two things a winner and dead carriers
