------------------------------------------------------------
It has been 40 years since the Brood Wars, and the death and destruction caused by the warring races. The few surviving Terrans banded together and fled with the Leader to the safety of space. We grabbed whatever we could, took control of an orbital platform and set off, hoping to avoid any more bloodshed or loss of life at the hands of Kerrigan and the Zerg. We had hope though, hope that one day we would return, and avenge our fallen brothers by slaughtering every Zerg we could find and retaking our old homeworlds. Until that day though, there was nothing else we could do, except wait and prepare.
I have heard of the terrible battles fought on the old Terran worlds of Char and Tarsonis, and although I feel lucky that I had not taken part in those battles, I feel that if I could have only been there, I could have made a difference. But, oh well, my chance will come. After all, I'm only eighteen, and I know that in my lifetime we will return and eradicate the Zerg. I hope someone saves Kerrigan for me, I'd love to be the one who finally brings her down. Most of the adults on our platform think I'm foolish, that I should be glad that I didn't have to take part in any of the death and destruction caused by the wars. I simply accept their criticism because I know that one day I will lead our people to glorious victory over the mindless Zerg.
There is plenty of room and recreational facilities aboard our stolen platform, and I've taken up weapons training, using the computer simulations to test my skills in marksmanship. We even had a contest once, and I of course finished first. The Elders noted that I showed great promise, and since they had also heard of my goals of leading our people in combat, they felt that I should be given some leadership training.
Their idea of leadership training was reciting long, mind-numbing passages of history to me, and I quickly became bored with everything they had to say. In the middle of one of their lectures, I stood up abruptly,
"Forget this, I don't need this, either give me something I can use, or I'm outta here!"
"Very well, oh young and impatient one. We will give you something you can use..."
I was suddenly very worried. I had just spoken rudely to the leaders of our people, and the last Elder spoke with quite a menacing look at me.
"I meant no disrespect, but it's just that I want to learn as much as I can, now!"
"We understand. Since you have shown such promise and willingness to lead, we have scheduled a meeting for you, with the Leader."
I was dumbstruck. As far as I knew no one but the Elders were allowed to see Him. I didn't know what to say, so I just stood there with my mouth hanging open. They told me the meeting time and place, the Captain's quarters at six o'clock, all I knew was I wouldn't miss this for the world.
I returned to my quarters and sat, anxiously awaiting my scheduled date with the Leader. Soon, the clock's hands were nearly at six, and so I hurried to the Captain's quarters. Once there, I saw that it was probably the best-furnished and nicest place on the platform. There was a table in the middle of the room, some paintings along the walls, a rich, velvety carpet underfoot, and over in the corner, a fireplace, with a high-backed, comfortable- looking chair facing the softly crackling fire.
"Have a seat."
I glanced around, and quickly found a small chair to the left of the fire.
"So...you're the one who's going to lead us against the Zerg when we return to have our revenge huh?"
"Ye-yes sir. I know I can do it sir."
"You don't know shit." He spat at me, "You young people are all alike. You think the war was all fun and games like your stupid computer simulations."
"Let me tell you, those battle were hell. Just look where they left us, drifting through space, aboard a stolen platform, with minimal weapons and resources. And YOU want us to return to fight and die again. What if we don't manage to escape? What then?"
I was speechless.
"That's what I thought. You're nothing but a coward, all talk and nothing to back it up. But, you want to learn, and I for one think that one of you young people should know what it was like, someone should know what we suffered. It all began so simply...
I had just been appointed a Colonial Marshal, for the Confederacy. This was a near-fascist government that ruled over the Koprulu sector with an iron fist, they had even used nuclear weapons to destroy a world that did not succumb to their control. I was stationed on Mar Sara, and I made sure there was peace in my sector. That was, until a large, and new alien species appeared in our space and eradicated the nearby world of Chau Sara. The massive warships rained down fire on the planet until there was nothing left but ashes. It was all I could do to keep the people under my charge from breaking out into a panic-driven riot. It was rumored that the alien ships were heading toward Mar Sara, and I sent out a distress signal. The confederacy responded by sending a ragtag fleet to ward off the aliens that we found out were named the Protoss. The warships mysteriously pulled back, even though I knew they could have kicked the Confederates' asses all the way back to Earth.
With the threat seemingly gone, I breathed a sigh of relief, little did I know, the fun had just begun."
He paused here, seemingly worn out by the flood of memories our meeting had caused in him, and I stood up, preparing to take my leave.
"I will see you here, same time, tomorrow, and we will continue our little chat."
"S-sure, see you tomorrow." I quickly got out of there and returned to my quarters, questions of what would happen next, and how our Leader survived the entirety of the Wars filled my mind, but I knew they would have to wait for another day. |
