The President and the Preacher

In 2012, the American political system had greatly changed. The former parties of Democrats and Republicans had given way to the creation of two new political parties. These new parties reflected the spirit of the times and showed that the American political forum had changed due to the lack of both acceptable politicians and the ability to obtain results. From the ashes of the former political genres rose two new ways of political thought. The Moral American Party had surfaced under the older Republican religious sector that believed in a new platform based on public service programs, Medicare and the overall preservation of moral conduct in the United States. The opposition stood in the form of A.S.D.F, American Syndicate for Democratic Freedoms. These were the majority of young voters who were born after the baby boomers and supported the liberal ideals of the now defunct Democratic Party.

The two groups had chosen what they believed to be, worthy candidates. The Moralists stood firmly behind the Reverend Philip Hawkins. He was an old preacher from Mississippi and had been spreading his political views through the use of his congregation. He and several other religious leaders had founded The Moral American Party and felt that they would be the new light for which they could guide a nation. The Syndicate had chosen a young senator to be their first party presidential hopeful. James Ignowski had been a senator for just half a term when the call came through for his acceptation to run under the Syndicates banner. He was seen as a visionary and represented the new blood of America. The race was hard fought and messy, with both sides firing mud at one another. In the end of a bitter struggle, James Ignowski was herald as the new President of the United States.

Hawkins was far from pleased and returned to Mississippi to lick his wounds. Ignowski went onward to Washington were the masses cheered his name. The first days of his presidency was a smooth transition to power. Soon after, he began to receive poor public response by many of Hawkins' supporters. Ignowski responded with a passive approach and attempted to weed through the rough waters. Soon into the next three months, the waters had become hazardous. Those who supported Hawkins had continued to make the Presidents life a living Hell. They gathered in protest against him and his liberal views and policies. Signs that preach their hatred for the new president were there to greet him wherever he traveled. Hawkins was aware of these actions taken by his followers and he sat back to watch the younger Ignowski squirm. Finally, in the spring of 2013, Ignowski had had enough.

The straw that broke the camels back landed outside a convention center in Chicago. The president was due to make a speech for a benefit and outside was a large crowd of angry protestors. They spit as the presidential limo passed and waved their signs and Ignowski had grown accustom to it. Then a brick was hurled through the crowd and smashed into the rear window. The brick and shatter glass sprayed the inside of the limo and the president had been cut above his eye. The limo sped away and the president was on the phone with the Chicago Commissioner.

"I want that God damn crowd outside the convention center dealt with!"

"How would you like me to handle the situation sir?"

"You're the police, police them dammit! I want that block clear by any means necessary!"

In five minutes, the riot control squads were unleashed on the crowds. The heavily armored police troops charged forward into the lines of protestors. Tear gas pellets were released and the unlucky few who stumbled into police lines were beaten down with batons. The crowd began to fight back with rocks and bottles. The police held their ground as rubber bullet rifles unleashed order upon the resistance. The protestor lines began to break and those who remained injured on the ground were subjected to kicks and cheap shots by the angry officers.

The police were able to beat the crowd back and memories of the convention riots of the sixties burned across every newspaper. The police actions were seen as both unnecessary and the act of complete disregard of human life. More shocking, was the fact that the order had come from the president himself. it was a public relations disaster and the president was under siege. Hawkins saw it as the perfect opportunity to eliminate his political adversary once and for all. Hawkins was headed for Washington with bad intentions in mind.

Washington D.C 8:00 in the morning

The busy traffic of Monday morning across 1600 Pennsylvania avenue had been silenced by a large mob of protestors standing united against the president. In total, 100,000 men and women had packed the street and shout nothing except hate and anger over the president and his recent actions. At the head of this mob was none other than James Hawkins, bullhorn in hand and charging up the already hostile crowd. The president had every advisor offering their opinion on the matter and they all agreed that the situation had to be defused. The president watched as the mass of people swarmed in front of his home with just a fence to separate them. Hawkins continued to rally the crowd behind him and every word he spoke seem to deeply effect them.

"This man who sits on his throne believes that he will show us the light. I am here to tell you that he is a false prophet and that I am here to grant you the light for which we can prosper."

The crowd applauded and grew more excited as the reverend continued.

"I was to lead this country and I alone can share the ideals that we need to live our lives correctly. I am your savior and I shall lead you to the promised land. Join me!"

Hawkins began to march to the steel fence and the sheep followed their shepherd. The crowd surged the fence and were met by a platoon of heavily armed marines. The platoon leader issued a stern and cold warning.

"If you do not disperse we will be forced to police your actions. We will not be hesitant to use force if you do not leave this area immediately."

"We have no need to fear you. Come and make us leave."

The two sides stood toe to toe in an ire silence. Then a gunshot rang out from the crowd and a marine slumped to the ground holding his shoulder. In response the marines opened fire on the crowd that now was running for its life. The firing stopped almost immediately but it too little too late. Seven protestors had been killed and dozens lay injured. Among them was Hawkins himself.

Two days later the marines were court marshaled with three of the Platoon members found guilty of murder. Those sentences were overturned due to a technicality. Hawkins left Washington alive, but a bullet had grazed his throat and ruptured his voice box. He would never speak again. As for Ignowski, he continued with his presidency for another year. However, the public criticism and outcry over the slaughter had placed his ability to govern into questioning. Ignowski resigned in 2015 and left Vice President Chris Poa to lead the nation. Poa ran again in 2016, but lost to Steven Jamellan by four electoral votes.
