Oh yes, having a bank of brand new comps at work is good. Especially since I am busily trying to get some cash together ^o^

So.... Free Time eh? What will I do with my spare time? Well, I'l ltell you what! I'll write up a report about that Mech Warrior 4 game I played last night!

Ok, so I signed on my favorite zone server for MW4 (The MechBay)and what do I find? Some great team games going on as usual! The twist this time was that each game was set to take exactly 1 hour, and respawning (coming back after you blow up) was allowed. Obviously this type of game would be won only in the points, and the point values over such a long period of time would be huge!

The map Lunacy was chosen for the battle, it's basically a huge circle of moutain ridges surrounding a giant bowl in the terrain. The name comes from you having to be a lunatic to run down into that bowl while the entire other team pelts you from the ridges. More on this later.

So, I go into ye olde mech lab and whip up myself a good long distance fighter who will be able to engage close as well should need me. I want to preserve some semblance of speed as well, should I desire to make a long trip around the edges of the map to flank the enemy. My choice of Chassis? The Awesome. I load on 3 ER PPC for the long range laser punch which serves just as well close in. Besides that I loaded on the biggest clan LRM launcher available, figuring it wouldn't be overly disasterous if I ran out of ammo for this. The rest of my tonnage goes into an anti missile system, heat sinks to bring my heat efficiency just barely up to light green, and some extra armor here and there on my front. I was figuring that for an hour long game at long range I might just live a very long time, hence the beam weapons (PPC's) with no ammo limitations.

So the game starts, 13 playes take the field. 5 on team one (me included) and 8 on team 2. Was this planned? nope. Was this cool? Not really. Would it all be ok in the end? You bet your autocannon it will be. Two players on my team seem to exhibit leadership asperations. One we will call Idiot. The other will be referred to as Sun Tzu. Idiot immediately bullies Sun Tzu into silence and attempts to lead the entire pack of mechs across the bowl. 4 of the mechs go, I climb the ridge (always the loner, neh?) with visions of a wonderful flank just as our slower assault mechs engage their front line.

Thanks to the fact that the enemy hadn't taken up positions on their ridge yet (probably arguing about a game plan at their drop point) our 4 mechs (2 Daishi, 1 other Awesome, and a mad cat) made it across the bowl. The Battle went very well for them, they engaged 6 enemy mechs, 2 other mechs had decided to chase me in the rocky side of the course when I turned my radar on. Perviously I had passive sensors only on to avoid detection. So I'm playing cat and mouse, picking at the legs of a Catapult and a Bushwacker versus my awesome.

My 4 team mates have managed to destroy almost all of the first 6 mechs they met. Why? They were almost all long range mechs for the most part and were at a slight disadvantage versus the well balanced assault mechs and heavies of our force. Unfortunately, when our opponents died they respawned at their drop point which was only seconds away. (ours being around 2 minutes travel time for me, longer for the assault mechs) Still our side did well, clearly coming out on top. I killed the catapult dogging me and turned in on my intended flank to find Sun Tzu the last of our mechs standing in the area, his Daishi pelted from all sides. We coordinated fire on an enemy mad cat and blew him up before Sun disintegrated. I was blown off my feet soon after and respawned a second later.

Idiot took charge again at our drop point. "Charge again, we rocked them" So.... we all charged despite Sun Tzu's warnings. The mad cat and I ran out in front, the other awesome being just a tad slower than I. (I added some speed)Right behind us were our two 100 ton Daishi assault mechs.

Then...... I saw missile launchers poking up just over that ridge. Lots of them.... like 6 of them. Beep beep beep "SHIT!" they had missile locks on me. I ran behind a building in hopes of avoiding the missiles barrage. The building shattered but I was left ok. The Madcat launched his own barrage of LRMs just before he took a double gauss rifle shot and a flight of LRMs in the face. You could almost see his mech spin :o(

3 flights of LRM his the other Awesome as I peaked out from behind my building to return PPC and LRM fire. Unfortunately I took too long getting my LRM lock and got some of my own PPC goodness rammed back down my throat by some fruit loop on the ridge. Our Assault Mechs now came into play, launching Gauss, PPC, Extended Range (ER) Lasers, LRMs, etc.... that was cool..... except the enemy basically melted back behind their ridge and took little damage.

What next? They pop up again of course, the mad cat explodes in the next volley, the other awesome loses most of its weapons I would wager, I lose one of my three PPCs and my LRM launcher. Our assault mechs fire again, concentrated on the same mech I had been and blowing him up. They take cover again, rinse, and repeat. Awesome blows up, I have 1 ppc up and running now, and that's it. And one of our assault mechs takes coordinated fire to the leg and goes down. I guess they talked, then used their sniper scopes to all hit the same leg with PPC and Gauss rifle fire. It was neat to watch, if...... a little demoralizing.

Wait... 6 mechs.. they had 8. FLANKL!FSDJSDLPKFCSD ya we got flanked too. That bushwacker and a Mauler run in on the right, blow me up. I'd assume it was short work for them all to shred our last assault mech.

So........ we're all back at the drop point and Idiot is talking up a storm. STFU IDIOT I NOMINATE SUN TZU as LEADER!
He tells us a few things, points out a set of ridges we can imitate their pop up manuever from. Then tells us smaller mechs to work as a team, either pinning their mechs against the 2 assaults or hitting them and then throwing it into full reverse to fade behind the bigger mechs in a staggered seeming retreat.

We perform the pop up. We blow 3 mechs up, mostly smallish ones. They Continue to advance with their 3 largest mechs, flanking with a pair of heavies. They take our ridge, our three smaller mechs hit their front, fade back retreat, do an about face and can now hit the flankers as our weapons are all set again, we destroy one heavy, our assault mechs do a 1 for 1 deal, we get the other heavy (3 v 1 is fun) and then turn around. Our remaining assault is fading back into our line of three mechs while firing, he is hurt bad, we intercede on his behalf and blow somebody's leg to all hell. Their last assault is almost untouched. Poof goes out mad cat, we all slam the enemy. Then BOOM goes our assault mech. We all slam the enemy again. I think he had some trouble telling 1 awesome fro mthe other so he spreads his fire out over I and the other awesome, and we are happily able to take him down in this manner without any one mech taking terrible damage.

Thank god for Sun Tzu! We continue to wage war in this manner for the entire hour, eventually winning a 5 on 8! Granted, they did pick 3 smallish mechs, 2 heavies, abd 3 assaults... but we had 3 heavies and 2 assaults.... so they had the advantage for sure. Good tactics and discipline carried the day and I chuckled and cracked my knuckles after the days warring was done! Muahahaha!

^o^
