having just come back to broodwars
since the release of 1.08, i was pleasantly surprised to find
such a good game so early on in my return to battle.net. i recorded
the game and thanks to the replay feature i was able to reconstruct
a very detailed account of the game. i hope you all enjoy this
one. written by thatinkjar.

with the teams set, and the "gg"'s and "gl"'s
shared around, we all entered in to the unknown. the lost temple
may be an overplayed map, but it's certainly one of the best. confrontational
and heated was just the kind of game we all wanted. everyone was
in, everyone partnered up and the game begun!
building babies:
everyone went for a different strategy from the start but how
will each team's strategies complement each other and how will they
see off their opponents?
])@rkPhoenix: as soon as he
was in and amongst his peons, he directed them to feed off the minerals.
straight away he builds another done and sends his overlord to the
9 o'clock position (666~TerroR~666). he continues to build
drones when on 9 he builds a second hatchery. this is a big risk
if thatinkjar and 666~TerroR~666
decide to rush but it works out okay.
Fallen''Angel:
having warped in, he builds his probes and then on 7 he orders a skilled
probe to build a pylon and then go back to mining. on 9 a gateway
is built and then angel sends an innocent looking probe to the 12
o'clock position to scout out thatinkjar.
thatinkjar:
like any other self respecting terran leader, he lead his first six
scv's to mine the minerals and then ordered his 7th to construct a
supply depot next to the mineral patch followed by a barracks on 9,
refinery on 10 but then chose to put the little mite back to work
rather than ask him to risk life and limb for scouting purposes.
666~TerroR~666: realising how
boring white can look in a game of broodwars, terror decides to build
a pylon on 7 followed by a gateway on 10. the gateway builder was
then asked to travel the map in search of hostiles and found blue
at the 6 o'clock position. whilst this happened, an assimilator was
built on 11. can someone say teching?
who said broodwars was boring?
once everyone had got their economy going and bases started, the
teams became to show more diversity as their plans for map domination
hit a crucial stage.
Fallen''Angel
before producing any units decided to build a second gateway next
door to his first and 666~TerroR~666
wanted some
more
pylons before building his second gateway. ])@rkPhoenix
however didn't want anything but minerals and didn't build anything
for a significantly longer period of time than any other player. several
minutes in to the game and ])@rkPhoenix
finally began a spawning pool and Fallen''Angel
began another pylon. it was becoming clear that the protoss master
and zerg wizard both wanted a strong, sizeable mobile army.
the green probe had now arrived at thatinkjar's
base and proceeded to draw scvs away from their mining
duties but then opted to attack a
defenceless
scv constructing a barracks under direct commands from hq. however
the probe was quick to show off it's inside as all eight mining scvs
raced over and blew it apart. scvs 1, probes 0.
the probe from 666~TerroR~666
was more successful and not only miked ])@rkPhoenix's
mineral patch of 8 valuable minerals but
also stole the heart of one of his drones which followed the probe
all the way back to terror's base only to be rounded up by a freshly
warped in zealot and slaughtered. tragic. revenge shall be sought!
with this victory in hand, terror proceeds to build a cybernetics
core planning to tech up.
thatinkjar with his
devilish ways builds a second barracks for marine pumpage and begins
mining his gas for the first time along with his parter. At the same
point, Fallen''Angel finally realises
an assimilator is needed and begins the warping process whilst ])@rkPhoenix
is clearly more interested in producing low tree units in quantity.
all the players now have military
units of some kind. the toss players both have 2 zealots, the lone
terran commander has 2 marines and the zippy zerg has eight zerglings.
however no player was prepared to attack just yet.
almost
four minutes in to the game and 666~TerroR~666
decides he needs a forge whilst Fallen''Angel
wants a cyberneti
cs
core having just mined some gas for the first time. very late behind,
])@rkPhoenix finally gets
an extractor underway whilst hatching ling after ling just as thatinkjar
is training marine after marine as another deopt is built just above
an under construction academy.
goons were starting to make an appearance as 666~TerroR~666
upped the tempo and to complement this, thatinkjar
began his factory at home and then started constructing another command
center at his natural leading his marines down the ramp to protect
both his expansion and main.
Fallen''Angel
decides that goons aren't anything to be afraid of when reavers are
free to roam. A robtics facility is built followed by several goons
for ramp patrol.
the slowest player in the game had only just started
his hydra den as ])@rkPhoenix
was preparing a mass ling and hydra force which could take anything
on. with guarded ramps and teching bases (apart from mr.phoenix),
who was going to strike first, lay down the law and begin the action?
as thatinkjar added
a machine shop to his factory, followed by another few depots to support
his growing marine force, he dispatched his marines in to bunkers
outside his main. 666~TerroR~666
expanded to his natural laying down photon cannons throughout his
two bases planning for any possible outcome. Fallen''Angel
was teching to a citadel of adun mummering "templars" to
himself as his first forge warps in and a observatory begins to construct.
])@rkPhoenix's first 3 hydralisks
burst out of their respective eggs and he morphs one of his hatcheries
to lair status. now everyone is poised to begin the fight.
Fallen''Angel
collects a goon and a probe to fly and drop on to the cliff next to
666~TerroR~666's natural
thanks to a freshly built shuttle. the probe immediately constructs
two pylons as the ignorant 666~TerroR~666
builds his third gateway and upgrades his ground unit's
damge to +2 with zealots on 18 and goons now on 22. thatinkjar
doesn't surprise anyone by queueing up several siege tanks as siege
mode research nears completion and he builds the all important comsat.
angel's pylons are now done at
his offensive post and he gets the probe to start three cannons warping
in. they finish and begin firing down on the goons and probes.


further cannons are constructed closer to
the peon line to halt mining. this all proves very effective until
the goons get comsat aid from thatinkjar.
the cannons are quickly dispatched but they are rebuilt and continue
to piss terror off. just off the production line comes a shuttle which
666~TerroR~666
uses to drop 2 goons and 4 zealots to completely remove the threat
from the cliff destroying six cannons and 2 pylons, a probe and a
warping in cannon leaving just 2 zealots left at the end.
Fallen''Angel
having lost out gets a stargate underway whilst terror begins a citadel
of adun wanting psi storm more than an ape with three arms. ])@rkPhoenix
who so far hadn't done anything daring, special or noticeable had
just finished building his twenty plus hydras and dozens of lings
for an offensive move. 666~TerroR~666
continues his zealot and goon producting whilst getting a templar
archive and observatory. terror is now in a commanding position with
a large set of upgraded units. thatinkjar
wanting some action of his own supporting a stable economy puts together
a dozen marines and a couple of tanks for his first attack of the
game.

])@rkPhoenix
wanting to put his strategy in to
a stronger position loaded 16 hydras in to four overlords and sent
them over his ally's base to the top left corner followed by dropping
the load over a missle turetless scv mining patch in thatinkjar's
base
. the hydras quickly unload as a wrath immediately
attacks the overlords as the nearby marines head for the hydras. the
hydras first attack the scvs but trying to cheat death for as long
as possible turn on the marines and siegeing tanks. some of the marines
get too close and burn in hydra acid whilst the scvs respect their
orders and continue mining and lose out to the few hydras who are
firing at them. the threat is dealt with quickly and with minimal
loss. the tanks blow most of the hydras apart as they moved around
trying to get closer to the marines. the final hydra is dispatched
in style by a lone scv. scvs 1, hydras 0. the overlords zip off leaving
a comsat burning away in the wind. straight away in response to this
attack, thatinkjar follows 666~TerroR~666's
goons and zealots with marines, medics and tanks to the
middle of the map to start an attack on angel.
Fallen''Angel
having teched, finally upgrades his ground units to +2 like terror did
earlier on, then continues to pump goons whilst phoenix moves to his
natural leaving angel the only one not to have expanded. just as angel's
expansion nexus builds, the zerg's hatchery finishes and thatinkjar's
engineering bay gets underway. 666~TerroR~666
before his attack on angel, upgrades his ground unit shields to +1 and
some terran wraths fly down to join the attack which is imminent.
the protoss terror
gathers four upgraded goons and 8 zealots and teams them up with four
terran siege tanks, 11 marines and some medics. they meet and chat
about the weather underneath terror's second expansions directly below
inkjar's first. The minimap...

Fallen''Angel
whilst unaware of the oncoming attack from his enemy, begun a fleet
beacon as his first expansion begins mining for the first time. 666~TerroR~666's
force moves in and inkjar's squad follows
promtly and they rest off-center to the left.

white's zealots move
in first battling against oncoming goons and zealots from angel. the
wraths fly in, cloak and attack the zealots too whilst the tanks still
rolling up to the expansion start to siege. marines flood in and support
the sieging tanks whilst 666~TerroR~666
orders his goons to target the nexus.

])@rkPhoenix's
very mobile defence
and attack force make for his partner's expansion quickly to help
stop the destruction of his ally. eventually, the group of marines
and tanks finish off the last of Fallen''Angel's
attack force
and they too target the nexus along with terror's goons and zealots
as angel retreats knowing he's lost the expansion.

the probes filter back up the ramp to safety
as Fallen''Angel
prepares another defence force at his ramp consisting of zealots and
goons and some templars. just at this point, a group of lings make
it to the offence and head for the tanks but the marines blow them
off and out of the way. this is followed quickly by ])@rkPhoenix's
hydras grouping together and heading in to the expansion
to assist. the hydras target tanks which are on the verge of going
to scrap heap heaven and blow them apart as more hydras arrive and
deal with the few goons and marines hanging about the unsieged tanks.
666~TerroR~666
hoping to see a defenceless green base runs up the ramp only to be
sent back home in next to no time by the small assembled ramp force.

with the attack over, Fallen''Angel
is left without his expansion and a distinct lack of attacking units
whilst both yellow and white have expanded and are in control of much
of the map with solid front door defences and a mobile attack force
towards the center of the map for quick attacks at any moment.
])@rkPhoenix's decides he needs to tech a little and builds
a spire and continutes to spawn more hydras and lings. Fallen''Angel
isn't short of money though and with the support of hydras, he builds
another nexus at his natural desperately wanting to mine those minerals
and gas as he upgrades his ground units to +1 armor and terror adds
another +2 to his ground units damage. However angel needs more than
just one expansion now, he needs to keep the pace up and expand again
and does so on the expansion directly to the right of his natural
asking a lot of the small group of hydras left to defend.
])@rkPhoenix's
first 3 mutas burst out and launch high in the sky and head to the
top left expansion with an overlord and some probes tagging along
to build a second expansion. Fallen''Angel
continues to produce goons and lowers them down the ramp as his first
reaver pops out and is shuttled down among
st
the hydras. thatinkjar
hadn't been sitting still during this time or the attack and had produced
a further five tanks, several more wraths, four drop ships filled
and dozens of marines and medics. a drop was surely in his mind.
666~TerroR~666's
main has just run dry and with only two mining expansions,
he wanted to add a third and shuttled four goons and a probe to the
bottom right expansion to build some pylons, followed by some cannons
and eventually a nexus. Whilst ])@rkPhoenix's
second expansion is still building
he morphs his lair to a hive to head towards guardians no doubt.

the 3 terror goons keeping guard
outside
angel's 2nd expansion head on in to survey the expansions but meet
trouble as the hydras slaughter them with only one loss as angel's
natural expansion begins mining. 666~TerroR~666
having realised that his partner was planning a drop rally's together
2 goons, a zealot and 3 dark templars and loads them up in to 2 dropships
and sends them to the middle of the map as he orders a bigger force
of 6 goons, 6 zealots and 3 dts to head for the front door of the
2nd angel expansion where the zerg force rests. thatinkjar
loads up the drop ships full of marines, medics and tanks and sends
them down to meet the terror shuttles and then proceeds to lead them
to the back of angel's mined out base behind all the gateways and
pylons.
the dropships unload along with the shuttles.
the marines stand their ground with the sieged up tanks as the goons
and zealots head up a bit and target the pylons. all the units target
structures as no defence comes to the rescue. all 3 gateways are blown
up as half a dozen other builds burst in to flames. finally, zerg
hydras make it to the back of the base but in a single line and are
picked off one by one by the tanks and the dts roam free and slaughter
the probes hanging around the base. thatinkjar
flies some wraths in to take care of the advancing mutas and corsairs
and the attack is a complete success.

Fallen''Angel
on the brink of losing his main has his partner send a dozen more
hydras to his expansion as ])@rkPhoenix
morphs in a greater spire and 666~TerroR~666
upgrades his shields to +1 and his third expansion begins mining with
a good defence of cannons and goons. the hydra force arrives but sticks
at the expansions and angel loses his main quickly and the offensive
force responsible for angel's main loss head to the ramp to watch
a few remaining goons and zealots run down and cover the mining patch
of angel's second exp.
the two tanks siege on the cliff edge
by the ramp and fire down on the hydras whilst the marines and medics
meet the goons and zealots down by the nexus. the hydras outnumber
the goons and zealots but the dts prove to be the key as there is
no detection for either angel or phoenix and they proceed to rape
all of the hydras and probes without any hassle.

the hydras fall and the nexus is slammed
and destroyed as is the 2nd expansion
nexus. 666~TerroR~666's
earlier front door force has been dealt with easily as
terror didn't micro the attack but now he sent down 5 goons and 3
zealots outside the blue expansion this time to stop any further hydra
support from getting to angel's base. Fallen''Angel
in a last ditch effort to
keep
himself in the game sends a probe to build a nexus at the exp below
inkjar's base and to the left before his other nexi explode but thatinkjar
notices
this and sends his marine force to
lay down the law for one last time and annihilate those last few hopes
angel had.
])@rkPhoenix
had never been the strongest player from the offset. he had hoped
to amass enough troops to overwhelm the opponent but bad micro and
running to angel's rescue all the time left phoenix is a diabolical
position after angel was seen off and eliminated. however,
phoenix
had morphed 6 guardians in and sent them with 4 mutas to meet the
yellow base and do some damage. on their travels they met the squad
of marines that saw off the last nexus of angel's. the marines took
a muta and 2 guardians before being slaughtered. 3 bored wraths make
way and intercept the guardians having cloaked and dispatch a further
2 guardians and the other 3 mutas with a terror psi storm on the remaining
two guardians killing them.
had ])@rkPhoenix's
guardian force made it to inkjar's base, it could have
put him in an ideal position having over 30 hydras spread between
his mined out base and natural expansion with lings hanging around
too. a few comsats later reveal a mining expansion at the top left
which thatinkjar sends his 3 wraths
to. the overlords become the target before mutas hatch and become
the wrath's lock on. two dropships of tanks and marines fly over and
unload as the expansion is brought down quickly due to no ground defence,
and too little a number of mutas.
])@rkPhoenix
conceeds with only one mining expansion and only hydras for attack
as thatinkjar and 666~TerroR~666
having 5 mining patches between them and a wealth of units all over
the map.

post match thoughts
the stats clearly show which team deserved to win. thatinkjar
and 666~TerroR~666
had expanded the most, had produced more units between them and had
launched more devestating attacks. ])@rkPhoenix
wanted to amass units from the start, the stats show he achieved this
but Fallen''Angel
called upon the hydras too much and
too often that blue's plan didn't work. the game was a lot of fun
to play and lasted around 23 minutes. thanks for reading, please post
