Insurrection: Episode II Sympathy for the Devil

Although the raid had been a huge success, Kerrigan also knew that she or her army were in any condition to fight a war. She had lost nine hundred in the assault and at least half of the remaining divisions were injured. She would need more men if she wanted to launch a full-scale invasion of Korhal. There were a few small militias that would pick up the fight, but even then they would be outgunned and outnumbered. Kerrigan thought about going to the Protoss, but they would probably kill her on site. Jim may have forgiven her, but there was no way the Protoss could ever accept that she was no longer the Queen of Blades. Kerrigan sat in her quarters with only the stars and a bottle to keep her company. Kerrigan rarely drank, but it was the champagne that Jim had been saving when they defeated Mengsk. She was interrupted by her new second in command. He was a young sergeant by the name of Derrick Forrester. He was ex-UED and had joined Raynor during the Hybrid Wars. He had never truly come to trust Kerrigan, but he was a soldier and carried out her orders. Kerrigan looked over and was always amused that he seemed nervous around her.

“What is it Sergeant?”

“The fleet is inquiring when the attack against Korhal will commence?”

“We are not ready for that kind of action yet. We need to rest, regroup and try to find allies.”

“With all due respect, that is not what Commander Raynor would have done.”

“But it is what I am going to do. Tell the fleet we are going to Braxis. We should find a militia or two hiding there. We’ll need all the help we can get. You have your orders, I expect them carried out.”

“Yes, my Queen.”

“What did you call me?”

“My apologize lieutenant, it was inappropriate.”

Forrester left the room with a sneer on his face, while Kerrigan went back to her self-pity. She hated that side of herself, but at times she wished that she had the Zerg in her hand, so she could crush Korhal and Mengsk in one blow. Thoughts like those were never really healthy and she abandoned them for a memory of Jim, when Mengsk was just a visionary and she was just a ghost. But those days were long gone, and as she sat there bottle in hand, Mengsk was preparing to speak with his old friend.

Mengsk walked down the halls of his palace with several of his advisors. He had moved Raynor out of the prison and had him resting in his home. Keeping Raynor alive was a risky move, and most of his advisors questioned his decision.

“Emperor, I am puzzled why you would allow Raynor to live. He is one of the greatest threats to your empire and you treat him like an old friend.”

“I can assure you that this is the best decision I have ever made. Let me tell you something about this man, that your charts and figures don’t. During the Hybrid Wars, the terrorist Duran had extracted the Zerg essence from Kerrigan, leaving her not only human, but unable to control the Zerg. She was left for dead, but during a raid of Duran’s facilities, Raynor rescued Kerrigan and she is now a part of his militia. That gentleman is loyalty. Your also right to say that he is a threat to the Dominion, but that is why it is better that he is with us. The serum I had given to him was a batch of the old Confederate Soldier Serum. They used it on criminals to wipe their minds and turn riff raff into a obedient soldier. Raynor has no idea who he is and I will mold him into the man he might have been. I will need to replace General Duke and who better then Jim Raynor?”

Mengsk entered Raynor’s room to see him staring out the window. His view overlooked the capital city, and beyond. The city itself was beautiful, but he could still see the wasteland that Korhal had become in the distance. Mengsk walked over to Raynor and stood next to him by the window.

“Beautiful isn’t it?”

“Yes, its incredible.”

“I often come here to look out over the city, Watch the people pass by, or watch the sun set in the distance. It’s a rare joy in my life, one that I rarly share with anyone except my closest friends.”

“Was I one of your friends?”

“You were one of my best and loyal friends. It’s a shame you can’t remember the good times. That is why I have this file for you. It contains all your history up until your last mission. I hope that this will jar your memory.”

Raynor flipped through the file and was not very pleased by what he saw. His parents died in a Zerg invasion, whatever the Hell the Zerg were. He was a Major in the Dominion military and work for special operations. He also had a rare disease call Influit, that required a booster shot everyday.

“I’m not sure I want to read on. Who are the Zerg? And when do I get this booster shot?”

“We were going to administer the shot now, the Zerg is a bit more complicated. It will all be explained to you in due time. Right now, lets get you your medication.”

A medic stepped forward and gave Raynor his “booster” shot. In truth it was the Confederate serum that would keep Raynor obedient and oblivious to his past. Raynor read through the file and believed that this indeed was the truth. Mengsk sat back and watched as Raynor revisited a past of pure fiction. Soon he would have Raynor’s undying loyalty, and then he would send him on a new mission, one that would break the rebellions back in two.

“Can you remember anything?”

“Some things are beginning to come back to me. Names and places mostly, but I can’t seem to recall anything more specific.”

“I’m sure it will come to you in due time. If you feel all right, I would like to speak to you about a new mission. I know you’re not ready, but if I must call on you, I will need to know if you can handle it.”

“I believe I can.”

“I knew I could count on you. This new mission is of the utmost importance, and it involves a very dangerous terrorist. This particular terrorist group has moved from one planet to the next pillaging and burning every colony it comes across. There’s even a planned attack against Korhal itself. I am going to send a fleet out and I want this militia hunted down and stopped before they kill more innocent people. I want you at the head of that fleet. There is a second part of this particular mission; you are to bring the leader of this militia back to Korhal, dead or alive. Her name is Sarah Kerrigan.”

Raynor looked over the picture of Kerrigan and could not help but feel that he knew the face looking back at him. The same face that now looked down upon Braxis, a cold and barren world where the snow and ice provided the only shelter for mercenaries or marauders.

“Kerrigan, the fleet is nearing Braxis, there are no signs of militia activity. Shall we continue?”

“Take us into a high orbit over the planet and look for any signs of current or former Militia activity.”

Kerrigan viewed the planet and saw and endless sea of ice. Frozen rivers, oceans and lakes meant for an inhospitable place. An isolated hell frozen over, with not a single sign of life to be seen. Kerrigan had begun to lose hope when a scouting ship spotted a series of structures buried in the snow.

“Kerrigan, we have spotted what appears to be a encampment. We are unsure if it is a functioning site or if its abandoned. A snowstorm is effecting our video link with our scouts.”

“Take into a low orbit of the site. Try to form a communication link with the area below. I don’t need any misunderstandings now.”

The ships descended towards the planets surface and hovered over the snow banked base. It appeared that the buildings were abandoned, each covered under a blanket of snow. Communications revealed nothing and Kerrigan ordered to abandon the site. The ships prepared to return to high orbit when an explosion echoed across the deck of her ship.

“Go to red alert, what the hell was that?”

“We are under attack from an unknown militia. Multiple targets have surrounded the fleet, both from the ground and in the air.”

“Get us out of here!”

“We can’t run, all escape routes have been cut off.”

“Try to get a communication link with them.”

Another set of explosions rocked into the side of the battlecruiser as Gemini missiles slammed deeper and deeper into the hull. Several wraiths with Kerrigan cloaked and ran for cover, not wanting to risk a battle with would be allies.

“Kerrigan, we have a link established. We are being hailed.”

“Dominion forces, you are surrounded. Land your vessels and prepared to be boarded.”

“We aren’t Dominion, we are part of Raynor’s Riders.”

“We’re not stupid, Raynor was killed at Korhal. If you do not land we will bring you don’t by force. This is your last warning.”

“I told you, we are not Dominion. We are the remaining forces that were commanded by Raynor. We don’t want trouble, we are trying to find allies.”

“Kerrigan, they are not responding. They are preparing to fire again. We should land.”

“If we do we’ll be blow to scrap. They want us to land so they can get a good shot at us. Warships can’t fight on the ground and that’s what they want.”

“What are we going to do then?”

“Power weapons, were leaving this planet either around them or through them.”
