As the two ships made their way back to their respected harbors the russian ambassador called his own superiors to inform them of the great news. “Please patch me throught to the Prime Minister. This is Ambassador Serov, please inform him that this concerns the trade agreements. Yes I’ll hold.” The moment of silence allowed Serov time to pour a glass of brandy. He wopuld need all the sleep he could get. It wouldn’t be long until he would present his case to the government of China and he wanted to be ready and alert. “Serov.” “Yes mister prime minister.” “What do you have to report?” The Australians have agreed to the treaty. They are now officially allies of our governments. Thier ambassador has informed me that there armies will be ready in two weeks.” “That is good. They will be ready in time for the final phase. No need to alter our plans, that is very good news. You have done well ambassador, the others will be pleased with your success.” “Thank you Prime Minister Chekhov. I am traveling to China to talk to the governors.” “I hope you are as successful in China as you were in Australia. If they also ally with us, we will be unstoppable.” “I also hope for success. Incidentally, how have negotiations progressed in Europe?” “Talks could not have gone better. Iraq has signed the non-aggression treaty with us. The ambassador from Italy also has an alliance treaty with Ireland.” “Ireland? How may I ask, did he accomplish that?” “Ireland is still occupied by British troops. The Coalition has not taken action even after the continual request by the Irish government. If Britain attacks us Ireland will throw all their support behind us and will attack Britain.” “Incredible.” “That should not be of any concern for you. Remember to be careful in China. They are not a certainty. They could expose you and us. I have sent a small task force ahead to China. They will meet you before your meeting. They will be disguised, but don’t worry, theyu will find you.” “I understand.” “Good. In that case, have a safe journey and report back to me after the meeting.” “I will sir, good-bye.” Serov hung up the phone as the ship pulled into harbor. From there he took a limosine to the airport and caught his flight to China. At around two in the morning, the ambassador fell asleep, unaware that he was being watched.

The afternoon air in Washington D.C was cold and dry. The Coalition Senate had been adjourned for the day and the president wasted no time returning home. No longer than three minutes had passed and the Coalition Presidential Mansion was already full of activity as the president continued his search for the terrorist responsible for the Secretary of Defenses assassination. All evidence pointed to the German Liberation Front, but that particular group had all but disappeared after the Coalition raid of thier headquarters. Hirt looked for answers in all the files on the G.L.F and the apparent assasin, Christopher Heine. Yet the more he searched through the history of this group and Hiene’s personal information, the motive behind his friends death became lost.

“Christopher Heine was not a terrorist for the G.L.F when he died, he was an assassin for hire. He kills Peter and then turns a gun on himself. Why? Why would he do something like that. He completed his mission and was going to be paid. Why commit suicide? It just doesn’t make sense.” As the president tried to find a solution in the files before him, one of his aides arrived with another box full of files. “These are the files with the history of The German Liberation Front. These are basic history and these are files on all the leaders and their whereabouts.” The president looked up from his reading and nodded his approval. “Thank you Howard, just leave the box on the desk.” “Will you need anything else Mr. President?” “No thank you, I’m fine for now.” “Very well sir, I’ll be in my office if you need my help.” “Thank you Howard.”

Howard turn and shuffled to his corner office as the president sleepily rubbed his eyes. He had only had eight hours sleep in two days and his full schedule combined with the investigation was beginning to take its toll. The files on Hiene had given him no new solutions and had wasted a good four hours. The box in front of him contained every file that was in some way connected to the G.L.F. Hirt drew in a deep breath as he pulled the heavy box towards him..

As the searched continued in Washington, Eric, Ben, Jarod, and Simon were getting ready for a night on the town. Since thier victorious win at the training camp, the four were spending more and more time together in a more calm atmosphere. Drills, target practice and survival training had made everyday life less eventful. Spring break would arrive in two weeks and the four had already begun the arguous task of planning a road trip to Baha. A perfect, uninterupted week of sun, beach and plenty of eligable women.

Tonight however, was a night for planning and a just for having a good time. The stood in the apartment they all shared, about a mile from the campus. They stood in front of the bathroom mirror adding the final touches in the form of cologne and hair gel. Each expressed his excitement for the trip to Baha and the freedom that came with a break in reserve service for the Coalition.

“Two more days baby, two more days”, yelled a very excited Simon. “Then its beach and bikini time down in Hawaii.” “Speaking of which, when do you plan on giving me your share of the hotel money?” “I told you Eric I’ll give it to you before we leave, I promise.” “Simon, we leave tommorow.” “I know we leave tommorow, just trust me. I absolutly promise your money tomorrow.” “I see, you promise.” “Yeah, I promise, right before we leave.” “Sort of like the time you promised to pay me back for that date you needed money for. How about the time I had to pay your part of the rent. I’m still waiting for that one too.” “I know and as soon as I get the money I will pay you back, but the trip comes first.” “No, first comes the five hundred you owe me, then comes the trip.” “Hey, both of you shut-up”, screamed Jarod. “Look, I will pay for Simon’s trip so he can pay you the money he owes you. Okay?” “Fine with me. Just be sure that you pay me Simon. I need that money for this trip.” “I will pay you tommorow. I guarantee that your money will be in your pudgy little hands before we leave.” “It better be and I told you before my hands aren’t pudgy.” “Fine, fine, your hands aren’t pudgy. By the way, can I borrow ten bucks?” “That does it.”

Eric headed towards Simon who immeadiatly ran when he saw Eric was coming for him. Eric chased Simon around the apartment hitting him in the head when he got the chance. The others laughed as they watch Simon scramble over the furniture with Eric close behind. “Yo, someone get him away from me. I’m not kidding, get him the hell away from me.” This went on for a good five minutes. The more Simon pleaded for help, the more the others laughed at him. Finally Simon was saved by the doorbell and thier dates for the evening. It must have appeared interesting to the four young women, to see one of thier dates face down and out of breath as another was slapping him in the head. Jarod and Ben were still laughing uncontrolably when they answered the door and the four dates had seen enough. They left before Jarod and Ben could compose themselves long enough to explain the bizarre senario before them.

With no dates and no back up plan for the evening, the four roomates spent the rest of the night asigning blame to one another as to why they had no dates and no plans. Yet the evenings disappointment was far from thier minds as they thought of warm and tropical surroundings. Little did they know that by tommorow, thier vacation was to be cut short.

Ambassador Serov prepared himself for the meeting with the Council of Governors. The council was the center of the new chinese government after the fall of the communist in China. It was made up of seven governers who represented the seven provinces that China had been divided into during the reconstruction. The council was the legistative wing of the new chinese government and created the laws and approved all treaties that were negotiated with China. Serov was less than enthusiastic with this meeting and he was extremly worried that the entire operation might be revealed. Every previous meeting was strictly a one to one negotiation. In order for the treaty to be safley negotiated, every single govenor had to agree to the treaty terms. Even if one disagreed the intentions of Russia and the alliance could be revealed. Serov had requested heavy military support for this negotiation. Aside from his two regular guards, Serov was given control of an entire squad of covert operation soldiers. He had air support in the form of Scorpion Assualt Choppers and Miggs, as well as a submarine off the coast of China. If the negotiations failed, he would be rushed to the submarine by helicopter and would return to Moscow.

The limousine pulled up to the Council Headquarters. The limo behind his carried the covert ops. people. They were dressed like assistants, in suits with briefcases. Under the suits were tactical vests and the briefcases had special compartments for their weapons and other gear. When everyone was ready Serov motioned to go inside.

The building was a recreation of a palace built during the Ming Dynasty. It was very beautiful but still had all the modern conveniences. Plumbing, phones, computers and a fully automated security system. The ambassador and his entourage approached the security checkpoint area. The men were searched and the briefcases were x-rayed and searched. Serov watched as the bags were examined by the guards. Serov began to breath normally as the last bag passed the examination process.

The ambassador and the others were lead into the governors hall. A long oak table was set out in the center of the hall. The skylight overhead sent the light directly over the table. They sat down and waited for the arrival of the council. Serov tried his best to remain calm and pretended to be studying his papers. The covert operations team studied the layout of the room. The door behind was guarded by four lightly armed guards. They would not pose a threat but, the forces that would arrive shortly would be a very serious threat. There had to be military guards somewhere since the building was know to have at least a platoon of chinese military guards station throughout the complex. The door to the right led to the gardens. They could rendezvous with their transports in the garden area. The only problem was the amount of time for the transport arrival. They would need to stall for at least fifteen minutes. The room itself was not the best enviroment for a defensive postion. The skylight would allow for an attack from the high ground. Aside from the skylight, the room only had three exits. The main entrance, the council entrace doors and the garden exit. Any escape out the entrance door would be blocked by both the regular guards and the military guards as soon as the fighting started. The council entrance was the most likly spot for the main assult force to enter from. It was protected and was raised, a definite high ground advantage. As far as the garden exit was concerned, it was the only route of escape. If that exit was blocked, they would be trapped.

It took another half hour until the council took thier place for the meeting. The doors opened and the seven governors took their seats. The council bench is high above the floor and is constructed out of marble. The seal of the new chinese government is stamped in gold across the front of the marble. This is the one feature of the room that troubles the commander. The bench provides excellent cover in the event of a fire fight. “Bullets will have a hard time breaking through marble that thick”, the commander thinks to himself. He looks over at Serov who places his pen in his front pocket. The commander lets out a silent sigh. He knows that that is the signal for the men to prepare their equiptment for an egagement. It also means that someone is going to die. The men begin to open the conpartments of the briefcases. In them are flash bangs, tear gas, and a dismantaled russian assualt rifle.

As the men prepare thier weapons, Serov begins the openning to his small speech. “Members of the council. I stand here before you with the offer of peace and friendship on behalf of the governments of Spain, Russia, Italy and Austrailia. The governments I represent wish only to aquire peaceful terms with the government of China and wish only for the continuation of trade and cooperation.” The council soaked in the ambassadors greeting and talked amoung themselves before addressing this strange proposal. “Ambassador Serov. The council and the Coalition State of China gladly welcome the trade and peace that you have brought here today. However, we find that your proposal is somewhat unneccessary. All Coalition States are bound by law to associate with each other in both a peaceful and cooperative manner. We are puzzled as to why the states under your representation are offering China terms of trade and peace as if they were soverign nations.”

Serov knew that he was in trouble. He placed his pen on the table and drank a glass of water. The commander felt a chill go up his spine. That was the panic signal. They were in trouble and the only way they would be leaving this facility was in the transport or in a coroner van. He reached inside his pocket and activated the signal beacon. The choppers and miggs knew to be ready for evacuation. Serov cleared his troat and began his second speech. If he could not convince the council, then he could stall for time. The chinese government would not allow tyhe council to be caught in the crossfire. As long as they were kepted in this room, they would be safe.

“Council members. It is true that my offer is from a group of states that wish to be soveriegn nations. Spain, Russia, Italy and Austrailia wish to be self govered without the iron fist of the Coalition waning complete dictorial control of the affairs of our countries. We do not wish to create a disturbance and we do not wish to cause hostilities. All we ask is that the government of China supports us in our right to be free and independant nations. I come to you bearing peace and trade. All we wish is to be independant and to coexist with the nations still under Coaltion control.”

Serov sat down for fear that he might collaspe as the governors debate what thier next course of action should be. Serov nervously scanned the marble bench to see if anyone would accept the offer. What was only minutes seemed like an eternity to the small group of men seated at the table. “Did you activate the beacon”, asked Serov. “Yes I did, The transports should be ready to pick us up as soon as we give the word.” “Tell your men to be ready commander. If the council leaves we will need to evacuate immeadiatly.” “I understand sir.” Serov drank another glass of water as the council made thier desicion. “The Council has heard your offer and we must ajourn to deliberate further. We shall return in one hour to give you our ruling.” Serov heart sunk as he watched the govenors rise and exit through the council door. His last hope was that they were sincere about giving his offer thought. That last hope died in the next thirty seconds.

Thirty seconds after the governors had left the security system activated. All exit doors locked and every window and exit were sealed shut by solid steel security panels. The soldiers moved quickly. They loaded thier weapons and put on gas masks. The teams demolition expert set to blasting through the steel doors that led to the courtyard as the commander sent the distres call to the waiting planes and choppers. The room filled with tear gas but the soldiers were uneffected. The chinese commander sent a security team in to gather what they thought was a group of diplomats. They also had gas masks and they waded into the smoke filled room. They expected to see a group of government suits lying on the ground choking. Instead they saw a pile of empty briefcases. They scanned the room but could barley see through the tear gas. The russians on the otherhand were given a clear view of the guards as they stumbled through the sea of tear gas. The order to fire was given and the security team was shredded by assult rifle fire. The sounds of gunfire echoed through the halls and announced that these were no ordinary ambassadors. The Chinese commander did not want to take any more chances and sent half a platoon of heavily armed guards into the fight. The tear gas was shut off and vented as the chinese soldiers took up positions along the main entrance. A second group of soldiers prepared a separate attack by way of the council entrance door. They would be protected by the marble bench and had an excellent advantage.

Meanwhile, the Russians had taken shelter behind the heavy oak table that they were sitting at not ten minutes earlier. The demolition man finished setting the explosive rig and ran back to the rest of the team. He had brought enough C-4 to blast through four feet of rienforced steel and he had used all of it. He also had a little plastic explosive that he used just in case. An explosion of that size would tear through the table and the men behind it. They needed to take shelter behind the bench. “When this thing goes off, it’s going to be huge”, he told the commander. “We need to take cover behind the bench. The marble should offer us more protection.” “I agree captain. This is what we’re going to do. You take the point and the rest of us will follow. Take the ambassador too. I’ll stay here and provide cover, now move!” “Yes sir! All right, you heard the commander! Everyone is to take cover behind the council bench! Ambassador your with us! Move out! The team made a break for the council bench with the commander providing as much cover as possible. The captain still had the detonator in hand when he reached the marble steps of the bench. But just as he had arrived so did the Chinese forces. They broke through the council entrance door almost on top of the captain. He drew his sidearm and was able to fire three rounds. He clipped two guards in the chest, but the third man had body armor. Machine gun fire tore into the captain and one bullet shattered the detonator. The rest of the team opened fire and the small invasion force was dealt with. The Chinese had only sent ten men through the council entrance and it was only a matter of time until reinforcements would arrive.

The team provided their commander with cover as he made his way to the bench and assessed the situation. The captain was dead and the detonator had been destroyed. The Chinese were moving forward and had taken up a position behind the oak table. The transports would be here any minute and they need to evacuate now. The Chinese opened fire again and the Russians returned fire. As the commander reloaded he caught a glimpse of the C-4 mounted to the wall. He moved to the end of the bench for a better shot. The others had a good idea of what he was going to do and took cover behind the bench. The commander took his shot and ignited the C-4. The blast echoed throughout the entire city. The heavy oak table shattered like glass as the shockwave threw it and the Chinese guards across the room. Pieces of steel and concrete flew out from the blast site as the wall crumbled under the weight of the ceiling. Both the wall and parts of the ceiling collapsed burying any survivor under the weight of the concrete and steel. Those behind the bench were protected from the blast and in the chaos, the team evacuated to the courtyard. The transports were waiting with the miggs flying overhead providing cover from enemy jets and ground troops. As the choppers lifted off, the commander looked back at the ruins of the council headquarters. The ceiling had caved in and the marble bench was in ruins. The marble was cracked and broken, lying in bits and pieces on the floor. The gold emblem had fallen off and lay bent and twisted in a pile of debris. The wall itself was nothing more than a hole surrounded by twisted, jagged steel and chunks of concrete. The transports flew to a remote part of the Sea of Japan, off the coast of Korea.

As the choppers headed over the ocean, Serov called the Prime Minister to inform him of the situation. “This is Ambassador Serov. I have an urgent message for the Prime Minister Checkov.” “This is Prime Minister Checkov. What is it ambassador?” “The treaty signing has been a disaster. We had to fight our way out and we are on route to the evacuation zone.” “Yes I know. It’s all over the news. Every report is telling of how an armed Russian military force destroyed the Headquarters of the Chinese Council of Governors!” “I’m sorry I failed you sir.” “There’s no time for apologies. What are your losses?” We lost one man during the fight. The rest have varies cuts and bruises, but nothing serious.” “That is good to hear. Your Italian counterpart, I am sad to say, was not as fortunate.” “What do you mean? What happened?” “The Israelis task force, that’s what happened. The ambassador failed to get a treaty from Israel and when the Israelis police tried to arrest them, a firefight broke out. The ambassador and all but one soldier from his team is dead. The survivor was captured, but should have taken his cyanide capsule by now. The whole world is on to us. We are speeding up our plans and the announcement will be given in one hour. I suggest you return to Moscow as quickly as possible. We will need you for later negotiations. The submarine has been instructed to take you to Australia. You will wait for further orders in New Sydney. Do you understand?” “Yes sir. I understand.” Serov closed his cell phone, sat back in his seat and tried to rest. Even knowing that in just one hour, the world would be at war again.

The Presidents Mansion came to life just as the sun was going down. New reports were filing in every minute. The phones were jammed and every type of advisor, strategist and military leader was trying to convince the president on his next course of action. “Mr. President we should consider ourselves in a state of war. We need to be ready to counter another attack!” “Leave it to a general to blow a simple terrorist action into a world crisis.” “A terrorist action? They destroyed the Council Headquarters! They were Russian soldiers and you believe it was merely a terrorist action! Don’t be so naive!” “Mr. President, if you listen to the general, we could end up in a worst situation then when this began.” “Enough! I do not what to here anymore speculation until I know what we are dealing with. If it was a terrorist assault then we have ways of dealing with it. If it was an attack by Russia, I want to know why and then we will start World War Four. Got it!” “Yes Mr. President.” “Sorry sir. It won’t happen again.” “Good. Now, get me the Prime Minister of Russia and will someone find out exactly what happened in China. I want names and an account of what happen.” The advisors and aides scattered as the president attempted to restore order in the mansion. The senate was being called into an emergency session and the president needed to adress both them and the Coalition citizens. But first he needed to know what had happened in China. The details were still not clear and the media had already began the round two of speculation. Round one had occurred about an hour earlier when a similar incident occured involving the Italians and the Israelis. That fight had ended in the death of the Italian Ambassador and a several Italian soldiers. The one in custody was to be questioned but he was found dead in his cell. Traces of cyanide were found in his blood, which means this either had special operations training or was special ops. personnel. A loss for both sides caused a lot of confusion and no information on why the gunfight broke out was sent. Now the new situation with Russia had sparked a whole new panick. In depth reports of a Russian terrorist group and a possible Russian invasion of China were the current rumors. As for his own information, the president knew only three indefinite facts. One, the men responsible for the destruction of the Council Headquarters were Russian soldiers. Second, the aircraft used in their escape was Russian military miggs and Scorpion Assault Choppers. Finally, the Russian ambassador was among the assailants. If this was a terrorist attack, they had access to Russian military vehicles as well as high ranking Russian officials. “Mr. President. Your limo is waiting.” “Thank you Charlie, I’ll be down in one minute.” The president grabbed his coat and headed down the hall. A few passing aides handed him folders with the latest information as he walked out the door. A few quick glances in the folder revieled very little. It was basically the same information that he had an hour ago.

The president entered his limo and began a short speech for the senate. They also wanted to know what the situation was but he was as unsure as anyone else. The limo pulled away with the reports and cameras swirling around it. They hovered around the limo banging the glass and trying to get a picture as the president left his mansion. Security had to pull the reporters away so the limo could pass. Hirt paid no attention to the masses outside the car as he quickly through a speech together. He would be at the senate in less than an hour and he needed to be ready. He had no idea of what he was going to say and he had little or no idea of what the real situation was. Hopefully both the Russian and Italian representatives could shed some light on the situation. He wanted to try and avoid a war. Hopefully, these two incidents were the acts of terrorists. Hirt closed his eyes and tried to relax. He had spent the last five days trying to find the group responsible for Peter’s death. He was tired and was in no condition to be handling a crisis. He was just on the brink of sleep when his Minister of War snapped him violently back into reality. “Wake up Steve. Now is definitely not the time for a nap.” “Chris. If you don’t stop shaking me, your fired.” “Steve, the Coalition is falling apart and all you want is to sleep through it.” “Falling apart? What the Hell are you talking about? And where the Hell did you come from?” I called the limo and told them to pick me up at my office. This fax arrived from the Israelis for you when you left. I told your staff to send any new information to me. They sent this about ten minutes ago and I got this one just as I was leaving.” Hirt stared at the papers in his hands. One was from Israel and the other was from China. The Israelis ambassador and the Council of Governors had sent him a full account of what occurred before the fighting started. The more he read, the clearer the picture became. The limo picked up speed as it raced towards the senate.
