The Story of the Lone Marine Marine number 104 suddenly awoke. Gripping his gauss rifle in cold sweat, his instincts became alert. He lied down, feigning death, while listening at the sound that was approaching him. Coming towards him he spotted was a 15 foot tall hydralisk, a formidable zerg predator obviously scavenging for survivors. Turning off all lights on his suit, 104 quickly held his breath as the towering beast stood over him. Feeling it’s hot breath penetrating his steel armor, he knew he was dead for sure. Yet suddenly something in the back of his head clicked. Turning on his gauss rifle suddenly he shot the hydralisk at the place where he knew it would hurt the most, the tail. Bullets turned from gray to red as the hydralisk fell to the ground, a surprised expression forever frozen on its face. Marine 104 hobbled behind a tree as he recollected the group of events that had happened in the last few days. <> It had been no more then 5 days ago when Marine 104 set foot on a planet known as the Big Game Hunters. Prized for it’s numerous resources the terran commander Number One had sent a small group of 10 units down to the planet, in an attempt to mine extra resources. In the dropship 104 was accompanied by two scv’s, 4 other marines, and 1 lonely medic. The 4 marines laughed and joked around with the medic while the scvs discussed the technology of terran structures, obviously eager to start their assignment. Looking out the window he could see that BGH was a square planet, exactly 128 by 128 miles. The engines hissed and died away and the brakes turned on as the dropship made it’s slow descent onto the rocky, jungle like terrain of BGH. Settled in the northwest point on the planet, known as 2:00, the terran leader of this small army (named marine 101) took charge immediately. Instructing the 4 scv’s (there were 2 in another dropship) he ordered one to quickly build a command center while telling the other 3 to mine first, and then build 2 supply depots and a barracks from the small budget that terran commander one has supplied them with. The scv’s took one look at the towering mineral patches and started working immediately on their task, remembering that it was their sole purpose in life. Acting like immature toddlers, the 3 marines and the medic joyously climbed on top of the vespene geyser, while commander 101 sat in a tree, keeping watch. Marine 104 decided that the best thing he could do was scout the distant surroundings and asked 101’s permission to do so. 104: sir I think it would be best to scout the surroundings for others and see what are tactical options are. 101: Permission denied...bitch 104 decided to go anyway and came to the rapid conclusion that 101 was in fact drunk at the time. Looking to the south he saw a rocky cliff with a small patch of water separating them from the other land mass. Trudging on for hours 104 came to the conclusion that BGH was relatively featureless, with each mass separated by a small strip of sea and one entrance leading to each land mass. After a long hard day of scouting 104 came back to base to see the command center already finished. All the other marines sat inside it, joking and playing cards, while the scv’s dutifully kept on mining. 104 scowled at the others lack of seriousness and decided to sit outside to keep watch. Another dropship came down during this time where 2 firebats and a marine decided were unloaded from the shiny silver platform leading to the massive dropship. With that it flew away and there 104 met a firebat named 602. 602 was a new soldier who took fighting seriously. With a knack for using his flamethrower at the right times, and having a nice yet serious attitude, 104 immediately became friends with him. After a long hard day 104 seemed content to go to sleep when suddenly 602 screamed. 602: Overlord! 3:00! And he was right, an overlord slowly flew its gargantuan body over the small sea. With their quick instincts both the firebat and the marine hid behind a nearby rock. 104 readied his gauss rifle but 602 stopped him. “Look, it’s turning away!”. Lo and behold the overlord slowly turned backwards. 104 knew it was too late to dispatch of this threat and decided the best thing he could do was hope that the overlord had not seen the terran encampment. He has studied about the overlords exceptional scouting ability in scout class at his old terran base and decided to relay his information to his commander. 101 immediately took this matter seriously (which pleased 104) and relayed the information to a nearby science vessel which gave it reconnaissance information. “Science Vessel to base, we have picked up a small zerg camp approximately the same size as yours. It has one hatchery and a nearly completed spawning pool.” “shit” said 101, we’ll have to dispatch it immediately. At this the terran’s went to sleep in their secret beds in the command center. They wouldn’t have happy dreams tonight... <> The scv’s had worked wonder in the night and the barracks was completed. Along with the barracks the 20 or so scv’s had also constructed a vespene geyser and were in the process of making a terran structure that 104 identified as the academy. Over the day he had used his rifle to practice shooting at targets such as trees and he had become quite lethal and accurate. One proud accomplishment had been the marines had helped a scv build their first bunker, smack between their command center and their 2 barracks’. New troops had slowly been trained and there was now a small army where there had once been just 4 marines and a few scv’s. The medic had been sent to scout out the enemy and had not returned yet. The scv’s started the building of a factory and an engineering bay when important information came into their channels. Medic: TERRAN BASE!! Attack of 10 zerglings and 4 hydras coming to your base! Tell my parents that I love them! AaaAAAAH! With that the transmission ended. 101 took a deep sigh and everyone’s eyes seemed fixed on the floor for a while when suddenly everyone realized exactly what kind of situation they were in. Unlike their old planet BGH was small and attacks could get to them fast. 101 pressed the alarm and suddenly laughing marines turned stone cold and quickly got on their army. There was to be an assembly in barracks one, wing 3. As the troops assembled there 101 gave his speech. 101: Troops, we picked up a small zerg force approaching our base. Medic 113 died to give us this information....... In terms of numbers we have about their equal. (the 10 marines and 2 firebats blinked and breathed deeply as they listened to their commander) Vultures and tanks are being hastily produced in our 2 newly completed factories however they will not arrive in time. I have been told that reinforcements are not coming and that we must defend for ourselves. Yes some of us will be lost, but if we work together we will live on! Now please go to the academy now. At the academy all the marines were handed new gauss rifles and everyone was given a small needle. A scv named Q gave the presentation. Q: These new gauss rifles shoot 1.5 inch 4 pointed spikes that are made to ricochet slightly on impact with an enemy. These new rifles have a longer range then your own ones and have a +1 upgrade on their damage. The needle is called a stim pack. Injecting this into your blood will immediately give you a boost and allow you to move and push your trigger faster. It should be noted that this effect is NOT permanent and causes tissue damage. With that note all the troops left. One stupid marine named 903 decided to start joking to relieve the tension. “hahaha look at me” he said as he danced like an idiot around a small table. Some people were snickering when suddenly 602 shouted out “WATCH OUT FOR THOSE NEEDLES!” but it was too late. 903 tripped on the slippery floor and hit the four stimpack needles. He smiled at first and danced noticeably faster when suddenly he fell limp. “903!” everyone shouted but it was obvious what had happened. When Q (also the doctor) got to the scene he took one look at 903, said the word “idiot” and went back to work. Night approached and the terran’s started working to prepare for the following battle. Everyone got a good night’s sleep as they anticipated what would happen to them the next day. Letters and phone calls were sent to loved ones and hugs were exchanged. <> “Bunker up! Bunker up!” Quickly 4 marines (the wussy ones) scrambled into a hastily prepared steel bunker while the two firebats stood guarding it to the side. In the distance they could hear the heavy sound of tails dragging and feet pounding on the floor and they could see a huge overlord overhead. “To the death!” shouted 104 as he positioned himself near the bunker. 3 marines had strayed far from the group in an attempt to get a better look. It was obvious that the hydras and lings were upgraded on speed because they got to the base a lot quicker then they should have. “Get back marines!” shouted 101 but it was too late. The 3 marines got pincered in a movement and one of them cried “to the death!” as the sound of gauss rifles filled the air. Spines and claws shot everywhere and all 3 died without one casualty on the enemy side. As the hydras left their victims arms and legs could be seen disconnected from the rest of the bodies. 104 took a deep breath, it had only been the second time since he had seen someone die and the first time was his grandma in her deathbed. With fear he scouted out a dumb looking zergling who had strayed from the rest. Gauss rifle in hand he started firing when he realized that it was in fact way out of his range. “damn I guess the range isn’t that long” muttered 104 as he stuffed 4 more spikes into his rifle. Suddenly the bunker started opening fire. Hydras spit their spines at the steel bunker but it seemed to hold. The scv’s building had been sturdy. The firebats lead by 602 engaged the zerglings quickly as the smell of blood and the sound of cries filled the air. “To the death!”, “c’mon zergling, try your best!’, “I love my mama!” (WHAT?!). 104 could see 602 dispatch 3 lings himself before retreating behind the safety of his bunker. Fire from the bunker blazed when suddenly a spine from the 2 remaining hydras hit the top of it. The bunker gave way and toppled as the 4 marine were pincered by the 6 remaining zerglings. 101 and 2 men rushed to help them as 602 and 104 could only watch. The 2 men ran too far and spines ripped into their flesh as their screams filled the air. One of them got off a missed gauss shot before falling and the other one tripped over a log and was dispatched immediately. 101 sat there knowing what was bound to happen. Gripping his rifle with his sweaty hands 101 fought to the end, slaying 1 zergling and a hydra before falling. As 101’s rifle slowly stopped it’s firing 104 and 602 realized the grim horror. They were the only two left against the 6 remaining zerglings and hydras. Night slowly crept up and the lights on the suit’s of the marines started shining. “To the death...” muttered 104. And then he charged. “BEHIND YOU 104!” shouted 602 as he toasted a zergling that had been creeping up. 104 saw the incoming hydra quickly and with his instincts crept behind the 3rd barracks. He could see the lights blinking and knew that infantry was being produced but not fast enough. 602 was toasting a hydra when suddenly his gun blinked. “outta ammo!” he shouted and ran back into the barracks. 104 took his gun and aimed it at the one remaining hydra. The hydra died in a heap of guts and 104 started a run and fire routine at the 5 remaining lings. 2 of them were killed quickly but as the remaining 3 started playing “run around the command center” with him he knew they would catch up. Suddenly he remember something. Taking out a needle 104 injected himself. “aah...that’s the stuff” he said. Then, with his eyes and gun blazing, he looked at the zerglings. The lings immediately knew something was wrong and stopped. 1 of them was blown away before the other 2 descended on him. 104 lost his rifle and punched out one but the other one slowly clawed through his army. He could feel consciousness slipping away when suddenly a grenade blew the zergling 40 feet away. The last thing he saw was a vulture that was 10 feet wide. <> Marine 104 woke up and looked outside. It has been nearly a day since the attack and progress had happened already. 2 factories had produced 8 tanks and he could see the tall, elegant machines siege up on the cliff edge. Vultures laid mines who targeted any unit dumb enough to wander in their path. Marines, medics, and firebats were everywhere and missle turrets were made. Goliath’s had been discovered and were produced readily. 104 stepped outside where he saw 20 men and scv’s gather around a building, cheering. With a smile in his face he saw as the first battlecruiser rose out of the starport. As elegant was it was powerful the battlecruiser represented the iron hand of their force. Dedicated to marine 101 the cruiser had the terran insignia inscribed on it proudly. The new commander, 102, who had flown from the terran planet Blood Bath walked in and said words that would chill everyone’s heart. “Tomorrow were are attacking the zerg base....” 102: 2 Science Vessels have provided us with extensive information about the zerg base. Armed by 16 lurkers, 10 sunkens, 30 lings, 12 hydras, 12 mutas, and a guardian the zerg base is defended quite well. However our experts have analyzed that the time to attack is now. With 12 tanks, 40 marines and medics, a battle cruiser, 12 goliaths, 6 vultures, and a few wraiths and science vessels we should be able to take it even though it will be a close battle and many lives will be lost. I will now give my attention to Q. Q: The lurker is a new unit introduced when God created a new universe called Brood War. It is 20 feet wide and is stronger than any unit we have besides our gargantuan battlecruiser and our tanks. It attacks by burrowing in the ground and shooting 10 meter high spines up from the ground. Splash damage will happen and thus the troops MUST spread out. These spines are similar to tree roots and will cause earthquakes as well as mass carnage and death. The only way to hit them it getting the information from our science vessels on where they are first. 102: God bless us all and TO THE DEATH! Beer and singing filled the air as the terrans prepared for the one last daunting task that was held before them. <> Marine 104 woke at 1200 hours and immediately put on his armor. The air was crisp and fresh and 104 breathed it in as he tried to get his mind on full alert. Suddenly he heard a rumbling off in the distance, “strange” he thought when suddenly huge trees rose out of the ground. Full alert now 104 knew he must ring the alarm. Who would’ve thought that the zerg would plan on an attack at the exact same time! 104 did a flip over the huge tree trunk and ran while dodging the spines that rose like spikes.. Panting at the command center he flipped open the switch to the intercom and shouted “ATTACK!!” “What kind of prank is this” shouted 102 as he groggily awoke just as a huge glave wurm smacked though his window, missing him by inches. “HOLY SHIT, everyone up!” Marines who had been in bed and drunk before were caught unprepared and hot blobs of acid hit them. The smell of skin burning was overpowering the sweet smell of burning metal and cedar. Marines rushed into bunkers trying to drive off the mutas while science vessels quickly relayed information to the command center on where the lurkers were. Hydras met marines as the two foes duked it out. 104 suddenly was hit away by a huge animal. An ultralisk! His gatling shots were to no avail and the huge claws gripped his side until it started to hurt. He knew what was happening, 104 was going to die... Fire spilled all over the armor of the ultralisk as 602 suddenly took out his flamethrower, hitting him with gasoline. “Get away while you can!” shouted 602 as he courageously took on the ultralisk with his small flamethrower. 104 could only stare as the ultralisk, who was first shocked, focused its attention on 602’s small frail body. The armor of the firebat was no match compared to the 20 meter wide claws and 602 blew up as a claw punctured the small gas tank on his back. “NOOO!” shouted 104 as he trained his gun onto the ultralisk. Shell after shell fell. 1000, 999, 888....counted and the ultralisk loomed close when suddenly it died. 104 bent down and started crying but he knew there was a battle to win. Gathering up his last strength had trudged down and started firing at the zerglings that were tearing at a nearby bunker. At this point it was obvious that the zerg had caught the terrans unprepared. Tanks couldn’t even siege before they were broken, taking only 24 or so units with their strong arclite cannons before falling. The acid lobbing guardian had been dispatched by the goliaths however they themselves were having trouble with the massive amount of zerglings plauging the battlefield. 104 got to a nearby bunker which couldn’t attack because of no detection. “I NEED RELAY INFORMATION NOW!” 104 shouted. Huge spines rose out of the ground like erupting volcanoes and the bunker fell. “I NEED IT NOW!” 24 marines stood trapped in a huge lurker pincer. Suddenly a vessel appeared overhead but it was too late. Huge spines came out of the ground and the marines shouted and screamed as legs and heads were separated. “Noo!” he shouted. Then he saw the pride of the terran force, the battlecruiser, slowly tumble as countless mutas and scourge hit it. It crashed along with all hope of winning the battle. 104 started running and got halfway when he hit a tree and fell. “602...” he cried as he lost consciousness. < Marine 104 got up and cleared the dust off his armor. He looked at the once proud terran base, now in shambles. Metal and fire was everywhere, and the zerg had already scavenged what they needed and left. 104 slowly picked up his gun, sighed, and trudged onwards on the slow barren plain...waiting to get his revenge. One day he would be back, and the zerg would pay. Marine 104 later became the infamous Jim Raynor
