| Containment on Temple, or High Ground is God | | | Author: | | | IP: | XXXX | | Date: | 06/30/99 08:06 | | Game Type: | Starcraft | | Labels: | Starcraft(1), Text Only(1) | | Report Rating: , # of Ratings: 2, Max: 6, Min: 5 Lifetime Rating for ShadowCrown: 5.5000 | | This is my first BR (I realize everyone must be incredibly tired of hearing that, but it is true).
Early Game
I opened with a basic 2 gate build on the 2 spot, and I am pretty sure my opponent, [JR]JackStorm, a friend of mine, used the same build on the 9 spot. I however quickly added a forge and 2 cannons on my ramp, while he added another gate. I scouted him with the probe who made my gates, and found 2 gates and a couple zeals just coming out, who destroyed my probe handily. I then made 2 zeals out of my gates and made a cyber core and got gas.
Mid game
I made 6 goons and expanded to the 9 spot. I sent the 6 goons down, gettin range as they moved, to find 2 cannons at the choke past his natural, and 3 goons. I proceeded to test whether or not range upgraded goons outrange cannons, and due to bad micro lost the entire force while inflicting minimal casualties. I proceed to pump goons and my first attack upgrade finishes.
At this point I attack with 12 1/0/0 range upgraded goons and meet 24 of the same on the road. I scramble to back up my cannons with barely 6 goons as he demolishes my force. I had sent a probe to expand at the 9 spot simultaneously with my attack. This is where the high ground comes in to play. His probably 18 goons, reinforced continually, assault my position through my ramp, where I had 6 goons to start, with more coming out of 2 gates constantly. We have a prolonged battle, where at one point he actually had 2 goons on the high ground, but I finally repulse him for good and tech to robo fac. I would like to emphasize that around 18 goons lost to 6 goons and 2 cannons on high ground here, with each side getting constant reinforcements. I send a dragoon and a probe in my first shuttle to cannon the ridge over his expand. He has set up a nexus, but I get there just in time to see a shuttle heading southeast for the island there. I drop the probe off and send the goon to deal with that expand, which he does admirably. I now win the game for myself here, with this ridge cannoning. 2 pylons, 5 cannons, right over his mins. Obviously the expand is new, as only 3 probes are there to die to my cannons. I then expand to the northwest island. I am pumping goons out of 3 gates at my main and 1 at my expand at 9 now. We both start to build up.
Late Game
I get observers and patrol them between the various expands around the map. I happen to find an expand right as it gets to be productive at his minerals only expand by his main. It is only defended with 8 goons, so I send 16 down to deal with them. I easily overwhelm him, and destroy all probes and the nexus. At this point, the cannoned ridge is huge, for I get an ob into his base and it is completely mined out. As soon as I see this, I get all of my goons, around 24, together, and assault his main. It is defended at the choke near his natural by a cannon, and I destroy the nexus at his natural with only one carrier harassing me from the high ground to the west. I destroy the gas gathering operation he has there, and move into his main. It is guarded by the aforementioned carrier, with no capacity upgrade, and 2 goons. I annihilate it all, killing the carrier with newly built scouts just for style points, and since he is a friend I ally and we get a draw.
Lessons Learned:
High ground and a choke seriously rocks. He could do nothing against me there. He couldn't take the high ground, I had goons there, until he killed them all, taking horrendous casualties.
Map control and containment is the most sure way of winning. If he has no resources, he cannot win.
Johnny_Vegas and Mark4 rock! (just a little harmless buttering up...C'mon! Gimme the gold! C'mon!) |
