Well, we all knew it would happen. I've decided to do a 2-parter report. This is, obviously, part 1. This contains 4 1v1 games between 2 people by the names of Richard_Simmons and cer1dan. Part 2 contains the other 3 games. So, prepare yourself for a long read or, alternatively, be a lazy bastard and just look at the pictures.
Speaking of pictures, you may notice the lack of style/lesbians in my title picture. The lack of style is due to space problems (not just for dial-ups, but for my br.com account too). The lack of lesbians is for a far more sinister reason. On my last report, I received numerous flames saying things pertaining to the "fact" that I have no writing ability whatsoever. Also, it was insinuated that I used lesbian pictures to boost my rating. These things are not true, which I shall demonstrate in this report. Who knows, though. After this is rated I may change the title pictures around to appease the horny and lonely alike.
Oh yes, I am running a little competition. In all of the pictures (except the title pics) I will have alt-text of various songs (1 song per game). Name all the songs and bands and receive a prize! [Note: The prize may or may not be a signed picture of T_mac in a bathing suit.]
One final note before we start. If you are reading this because it is a report, then I commend you. If you are reading this because the pictures aren't loading fast enough and you have to pass the time somehow, then I dislike you. If you are reading this because you have already let all the pictures load, found no lesbians and wanted to know why, then I simply abbhor you. Go to hell, or maybe a porn site. Be a user, not an abuser. That said, let's get to the games!
Game One: Rivalry
I was busily trying to set up a game to report, when I suddenly found 2 likely suspects. Cer1dan and Cyco-Dude both agreed to play with me as an observer, and it was on. I created the game on Rivalry but, to my disappointment, it turns out that Cer1dan is a mad zerg player. Due to the multiple entrances to each natural (Entire audience except 3 people look up map in StarEdit), Cer1dan was able to bypass Cyco-Dude's frontal push. The game ended quite uneventfully.
Ever the optimist, I pleaded with Cyco-Dude to play a rematch against Cer1dan. His answer was an adament "No." He did offer to help find a replacement.
A few minutes passed and we were about to give up when a few people entered NH. A fellow by the name of Richard_Simmons looked up for a game, so I politely flamed, err, asked for his participation. I also told him that I'd make him famous. Remember that line later on - I'll be eating my words. Publically offering up the name and password, I scurried off to make another game on one of my favourite maps, Rivalry.
Accompanying me on this wonderful journey were 2 other observers. One was, naturally, Cyco-Dude, eager to learn how Cer1dan had beaten him. The other observer made my face go all red. I was blessed by the appearance of one of the greatest reporters ever, WilliamWC3. I guess I better show the map now.
This map, for the ignorant among us, is beautifully made by the top Blizzard employees. It's a 4 player map, with starts in each corner. There's a ramp leading down from each main. At the bottom of this ramp is your natural, a mineral-only expansion with 3 bridges having access to it. 2 of the bridges head off towards a mineral/gas expansion, located at top middle, middle right, middle left and bottom middle respectively. These each have 2 bridges leading to them. The only other expansions are in the very centre of the map. 2 gas nodes are sitting all on their lonesome, with various paths leading to them.
Richard_Simmons chose Terran and touched down at bottom right. Cer1dan chose Protoss and started up at top right. Oh goody, TvP is always fun, and the physical anomolies of this map should make for some interesting gameplay.
Both players make near-perfect clones, with Simmons coming out slightly on the better side. Using this huge advantage to it's fullest, Simmons builds a depot at the top of his ramp, followed by a barracks completing the wall-in. The SCV that finished the depot went scouting anti-clockwise and, in case you've forgotten already, found Cer1dan with ease. Finishing up the early-game builds, Simmons constructs a refinery at home, followed by a refinery at Cer1dan's main which stopped building at around 300 hp.
As for Cer1dan, his build was a rather odd one for a 1v1 match. The mandatory pylon is thrown down, but then a nexus is built at his natural when he has 13 probes. To do this, he had to stop peon production, but he should be OK, right? Just in case, he decides to plomp down a gateway at 15 control, followed by another one at 17, obviously wanting the precious zealots required for defensive procedures.
The first 2 zealots made are sent to destroy the refinery in Cer1dan's main, as this was holding up his plan for total planetary domination. I'm not sure if that was Simmons' plan or not, but the fact that there isn't a gas node at the naturals on Rivalry meant that Cer1dan really needed that geyser free. Back on the Terran front, Simmons was busy teching to factories, with a machine shop being made on one and another being hastily built.
The match wasn't really happening, and I was sceptical as to whether this game would be worth reporting. But, just as I was preparing to make up an excuse to leave the game, I became amazed, astounded, excited, perplexed and mystified (and no, I wasn't downloading porn!). I never usually submit replays with my reports, as I feel that it cheapens the experience, but this game has to be seen to be believed. I did promise one of the players that they could post it, though, so you'll have to wait until they release it.
The point in case that I am blabbering about is concerned with micro. As I watched the replay of this game, I also noted a key point. Simmons was getting the vulture speed upgrade in his machine shop, not siege mode as I had previously assumed. Following this, 4 vultures are sent up towards Cer1dan's expansion to cause some mayhem. Coincidentally, Cer1dan has built his cybernetics core at his natural in an attempt to throw off scan-based reconnaissance. It was nearly warped in as the vultures arrived, along with 2 more gateways up at Cer1dan's main.
Here's where the micro comes in. The bridges, as mentioned before, are often the places of the best battles, and this is no different. Those 4 vultures roll on in and take some pot shots at a few probes, before being scared back a bit by 4 or so zealots. By using very intense micro skills, 2 zealots die in a matter of seconds, with the other 2 backing off. More probes start getting shot up and the zealots come back in, this time with more reinforcements. Also, wishing to rid himself of the pesky vultures for good, Cer1dan brings a heap of probes off mining to deal with the situation.
1 vulture dies, while 2 more zealots go down. Suddenly, the probes start taking their toll on the vultures, and another one explodes. The 2 vultures retreat a little bit before trying for some more carnage. Unfortunately for Simmons, the cybernetics core and gateways have finished long ago, and 3 goons await the vultures on the other side of the bridge. Knowing when to cool down a little, Simmons runs (utilising his speed upgrade) and scouts out the other 2 starting positions. I truly feel that those skirmishes embodied the most amazing micro ever seen. Even Simmons, upon watching the replay later on, couldn't believe how well he microed those vultures. Inspiring.
With all of the micro occuring, Simmons had let a small amount of money pile up, but not enough to be incriminating. A starport is plunked down, and more forces amassed. Back at the Protoss front, Cer1dan is busily rebuilding his probes and making sure that he had enough troops to be safe.
As is his wont, Mr. Simmons puts on his thinking cap and comes up with a dastardly plan. The 8-minute vulture drop! Sure, some may say that this won't achieve anything, but they haven't seen this guy micro vultures!
4 of the little bastards are loaded into a dropship and get dropped behind Cer1dan's main defenses (his natural). The vultures realise that they will be easily outnumbered and, planning ahead, Simmons lays some mines near the gateways before running towards the mineral line. Using these methods, the titillating Terran is able to kill off the first wave of zealots that try to stop him with ease. After a few probe deaths (not many at all), the main bulk of Cer1dan's forces come tumbling back to finish the vultures off.
Thus ends the age of Vulture, with many a Chinese firecracker being heard. With all of the commotion about him, Cer1dan decides to be a dirty little whore and expands to the mid-right spot, obviously wanting the gas there. A few left-over vultures go on an expedition of harrassment, only to stumble across this fledgeling expansion at mid-right. Unfortunately, 354175234 goons tend to beat a few vultures quite badly. For the first time in the game Cer1dan's resource advantage started to make it's presence known. He had survived the risk period, and now he had a pretty big advantage.
Not wanting to lose any ground, 3 photon cannons are erected at mid-right while Simmons realises his plight. A small tank push is set up across the bridge from mid-right, forcing a limit on probes at the new expansion. The problem, you see, was that the tanks could reach 1 mineral patch. The others could be mined from, but doubling up would make a probe move to a free patch - the one in range. This was either great luck, or pure brilliance never before seen on this humble little Earth.
Also, while the siege was in full swing, that Lusty Latino (what?) expands to his natural expansion in an attempt to catch up with the whoring Protoss.
Map Update!!
As can be clearly seen, Cer1dan is ahead in expansions with both his natural and mid-right. Simmons only has his natural, but has sieged up mid-right, so technically they are even.
The expansion advantage that Mr. Protoss has could be very short-lived, depending on how the siege turns out. As such, this game is very open.
Right about this time Cer1dan notices that the siege at mid-right might cause him some troubles, and promptly expands to top left. Also, testing the waters with a toaster, he sends a fairly medium contingent of dragoons to hit the siege. They hit into a large group of vultures and mines, causing quite a bit of death all around.
At first it seemed that the dragoons would easily overrun the outpost, but that is before you add in the vulture factor! Once again, the micro on these little guys was enough to kill quite a few dragoons and lose not many of their own number. Still, a little slip of concentration and the vulture squad went up in flames to their own mines, due to some mean looking zealots. With the next contingent of dragoons knocking right on the door, all that was left to hold them off was a bunker and a tank. Of course, there were some backup units close at hand...
The battle raged on and, just as I had hoped, the intriguing layout of the map meant that the Protoss forces had to streamline into the tank/bunker combo. A few goons died horribly before Cer1dan wisened up and ran the whole lot into the small triangle of grass. This gave the SCV time to repair the bunker enough so that, with the tank/bunker slightly above them, the goons were trapped by the approaching vultures.
Somehow the bunker survived, and provided much needed cover fire for the defending troops. The tank kept hammering away, and the occasional spider mine would explode in the middle of a huge heap of dragoons. All of this put together meant that, amazingly, the huge goon force was beaten aback. Seeing the failure of this attack, Cer1dan adds 3 more cannons to his mid-right expansion, "just in case."
I suppose I must make a quick note about the players.
Simmons: He is content with his tech choice of vultures, tanks and the odd bunker. He has also got a science facility and is busy making some mobile detectors in case of Dark Templar.
Cer1dan: He seems to like static defense in place of leaving troops behind. The top left expansion which he took a little while ago (yes, I did mention it) has 3 cannons at the ramp for defense, nothing else. His tech choice of goons and the odd zealot seems to be holding for now, but once Simmons gets some more money, this Protoss could be in trouble. What is he to do...
Right around the time when the first big attempt at breaking the siege failed, Simmons started on an expansion to the bottom-mid expansion. The gas there would be very useful indeed, if tank production were to be upped...
Not wanting his siege to be broken anytime soon, Simmons lays a whole heap of mines down and sieges a tank up near the bridge. Unfortunately for our little Terran Terror, Cer1dan is just about to launch another attack on that very spot. The result is a big explosion of mines and a dead tank, with dragoon soup all over the place. The bunker and leftover tank are able to hold the remaining guys off until some vultures sped up to the rescue. Siege: 2, Goons: 0
Little less than a minute later, both sides have been quietly rebuilding and rethinking things. The silence is broken as Cer1dan tries, once again, to break the siege laid out by the good ol' Terran boys. Meanwhile, deep in Magic Mountain, the Super Ultra Mega Ranger Teletubbies were preparing for the war...
Yes, well anyway - Cer1dan decided to hit the siege hard. Defending the small platform was a science vessel, 2 tanks, 2 turrets and a bunker of marines. Attacking were a good dozen or so dragoons, although once again the bridge made things hard for them.
Streaming across, all seemed bad for the Terran Fitness Instructor, until the science vessel showed the power of those 225 gas units. Defensive matrix sprung out and managed to slow the assault long enough for some vultures, marines and SCVs (?) to come up. The most surprising part is, though, how the SCVs managed to kill some dragoons without being hurt by splash damage! With another attack repulsed and only 1 tank and a few vultures to show for it, Cer1dan was getting restless.
With all of the going-ons, who would have time to conspire and plot? Simmons, that's who! A tank and 2 vultures are quietly loaded into a dropship and take a round-a-bout way to get to the Protoss main base.
The dropship came along from the left and dropped it's cargo on the unsuspecting Protoss base. Mines there were, and probe-death too, with goons away, oh what could he do? A few magical dragoons came running up to greet the Terran forces, only to have a few die to spider mines. The 1 remaining went about killing a vulture, buying time for another 3 goons to come up. These were lucky enough to come up to both the tank and the vulture right after they had fired, meaning an easy kill.
It wasn't all bad, as nearly all of the probes there died. Also, on the way home, the dropship ran across the cannons at top left that were protecting the "secret" expansion up there.
Also, at this point in time, Simmons sees success and reaches for it, expanding to bottom left.
Map Update!!
As seen, both players are expanding fairly well. Cer1dan appears to be in the lead, until you realise that I never mentioned him taking top middle. Yes, that's right, he has simply fortified (somewhat) this expansion, but is yet to take it. All of his others are in full swing, but mid-right could fall at any time due to the threat of the siege.
Simmons has all of his expansions in full swing, except bottom left. The CC is finished, and some SCVs will be transferred over soon. If he can break mid-right soon then he will have a major advantage.
With the blunt realisation that the siege won't fall without expending a lot of troops, Cer1dan tries a sneaky move. This was stimulated, of course, by the scouting of a brave little observer, whom met his death later on. 4 goons are sent on a mission of utmost importance, traversing down the left side of the map to ultimately reach bottom middle.
There, in the clear night of day (?), the dragoons made the fatal error of crossing the Lord Of The Vultures. A factory was being built there, but the SCV died and the building got cancelled. Then, just as the dragoons started to attack the other SCVs and the CC, they were brutally and maliciously assaulted by vultures. Mines and micro played a big part in this skirmish, as no time was wasted and the goons fell with ease.
With this small token of success, Simmons starts to push the siege up further. Some cannons fall, but little else is achieved in this act. The siege would've gone further, but at that moment Cer1dan decides to surprise and distract his enemy.
Once again, 2 things seemed to happen at the same time. D'oh. In any event, as Cer1dan's surprise moved out, Simmons finally hit the top left expansion. 1 tank was sieged up, and 6 vultures were ready to give their lives in order to remove the fog of war. Sadly, this attack fails quite uneventfully, allowing for the Prickly Protoss to keep the expansion.
That surprise I spoke of? Why, it is none other than 9 goons and 2 zealots rammed down the bottom middle expansion. The tanks and vultures tried their hardest to defend, but the way was blocked by running SCVs. Some of the goons fell, and both zealots died to tank blasts, but the CC fell nonetheless. As soon as it fell, with the full wrath of Simmons coming straight at him, the 6 remaining dragoons ran the hell out of there.
Luck just wasn't on the Terran's side, though. One of the goons decided to go check out bottom left, and what did he spy? The expansion that had just been populated by SCVs was under the hammer. The SCVs realised the threat and started to beat the crap out of that mischievous dragoon, but then the other 5 showed up. The entire expansion was razed, making 2 big losses in a row for our intrepid Human. Capitalising to his fullest, Cer1dan then took top middle. Simmons was in a spot, what should he do?
Knowing that his mark must be made, Mr. Simmons loaded up a tank and 2 vultures to go hit top left. All was going well, too, when some relief troops showed up in the form of a bunch of goons. Nevertheless, all but 2 probes at the expansion had been wiped out, and mining stopped for a significantly long time. Furthermore, seeing how Cer1dan's main and natural were dry, top left was the most heavily populated (mid-right was under siege, top mid had just come online). The blow in probe count was sufficient that Simmons could actually build himself back up with safety.
Well, that was the plan, at least. It appears that this massacre had angered Cer1dan, who promptly sent everything he had at the siege. Further adding to his bad luck, Simmons still had most of his siege-bound guys at bottom middle, defending as he rebuilt a CC there. All of this added together meant that the siege was finally broken. (As a side note, the siege lasted no less than 9 minutes. This is very good for a game of StarCraft!)
Knowing that he had to fight back as best he could, Simmons went all out. SCVs were on hand to repair, and they started attacking while tanks blasted from afar. The fabled bunker did it's share of damage, and the fall of the siege took a toll on Cer1dan's forces. If this attack could be stopped, the Protoss would have to rebuild his probe forces, meaning that Mr. Simmons could pull off an amazing win here.
Both players know that their next moves could very well determine the outcome of the game. Simmons knows that he needs to keep his bottom middle expansion online (has just rebuilt the CC) and he also needs to drain his natural of all that is remaining (not much). He is in a very precarious position, with 18+ goons up his ass.
Cer1dan needs to do a lot of damage with these goons, as his worker army was cut down severely. If those goons don't wound the Terran enough, a whole heap of tanks and vultures could go on a rampage. Both players need a good result here, and the tension is mounting...
Wishing to cause the most damage, Cer1dan sends 6 or so goons around the left to hit bottom middle, while his larger army eagerly waits. Hoping to force his hand, however, is that dastardly Mr. Simmons. He sets up a largish tank formation at his ramp, and places some on the bridge leading to where the siege was. From this method, a good 3 or 4 goons died before they were pulled back a little.
The goons finally arrive at bot-mid and start attacking anything they can find. The problem is, tanks have a longer attack range and are able to kill off these goons without the CC falling. Some damage was done, but not enough. In his desperation, Cer1dan makes his biggest mistake of the game, and attacks towards Simmons' natural. The 2 tanks on the bridge die easily, but those on the cliff cause much death among the ranks. Realising that they are no match for the high-ground tanks, Cer1dan runs his goons out of their range and starts hitting at the Terran natural.
Simmons won't have any of this, though, and sends some tanks and vultures down to dispose of these menaces. All-in-all, Simmons came out on top of the entire exchange. For the first time in the game, he has a definite advantage, and he knows it.
The end has drawn nigh, and both players prepare for a last "Hurrah!" Simmons has a large army and is going to finish the mid-right expansion, once and for all. At the same time, Cer1dan is sending all of his troops that he could muster, intending to kill the Terran natural. A few dragoons have strayed, however, and took the wrong path to get to the Terran natural. These run across the large force of tanks and vultures, dying without causing any death. This formiddable force plunders mid-right and absolutely trashes everything in their path. Finally, the expansion has fell. Of course, it is nearly all mined out, but that's not the point...
The goons that took the correct path, however, now number 8. They stream into the natural and, with most of his force busy plundering, they trash the entire place. Of course, Simmons' natural was nearly all mined out too, but once again that's not the point. =)
Forever forcing Cer1dan's hand, Mr. Simmons pushes on instead of heading back. The bridge where the first battle of the game happened is the scene, and the tanks make no mistake in setting up in range of the nexus. Only 1 vulture managed to get through (damn big tanks) but, as usual, that was enough. A good 8 or so goons threatened this force and, with perfect efficiency, the vulture lays a mine and the science vessel casts D-matrix. The mine popped up, ran over, and killed 5 dragoons. Of course, it also killed 2 tanks, but that doesn't matter. They would've died to the goons anyway.
With this move, the entire Protoss natural is wasted and there is much rejoicing. The main is where most of Cer1dan's troops are being produced, and taking that out would be a big blow indeed.
What of the remaining dragoons down at Simmons' natural? Why, in all of the commotion, they were left idle, allowing the good Mr. Terran to build up more guys. When the goons tried to hit bottom middle, tanks and vultures were waiting for them, and they died splendidly. Cer1dan was now in a big jam. Simmons still held bottom middle, and there was a large marauding force of tanks and vultures roaming around near his main. He still had one trick up his sleeve, though. Although far from perfect in execution, he had great need, and thus it began.
Some people might've seen it coming (especially the observers, obviously), but this move took Simmons by surprise and changed the whole situation. The thing I am blabbering about: Carriers, the ultimate in Protoss Homo-Erotica. They first appeared over the heads of the main Terran attack force. That fateful move of cheese caught our Terran by surprise, indeed, and caused him to panic.
Instead of thinking clearly and still attacking the top right (Protoss main), whilst frantically building goliaths back home, he ran his forces. As such, the carriers could move in one direction and accomplish all of their objectives. If, however, the tanks and vultures had attacked Cer1dan's main, the carriers would've had to choose between stopping them or hitting before goliaths were around. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20 so they say.
Not only were these 2 (two) carriers ripping it up, but a few miscellaneous ground units decided to pursue. In a few simple moments, victory had been snatched from the hands of Simmons and put back up for grabs. Well, whether it was luck or genius I do not know, but a tank and a vulture were still sitting up at the Protoss natural. They had been overlooked! So, as the carriers pursued the Terran ground troops, that tank and vulture team hit top middle. 2 Nexi there were, and 1 was damaged quite a bit, but no other headway could be made.
Back on the topic of carriers, they were busily being gay and running around the 2 Terran bases (Simmons' main and the bottom middle expansion). Turrets were erected hastily and goliaths produced as quickly as possible, but money was running short. Oh, what to do?!?
In a moment of clarity, Simmons realises that having tanks, vultures and the occasional marine won't help out against carriers. As such, 3 tanks, a vulture and a marine are sent to ransack the top middle expansion. They come upon an open base! Hooray, finally some luck for the Terran. That weakened Nexus falls very quickly and, before any enemies come to stop them, these heroic troops start attacking the other Nexus, the one near the minerals. As is expected, some zealots came to ruin the fun and the Nexus is left at 59 hit points. The battle seems to hang in the balance, completely centred about what happens with the carriers...
2 more carriers have joined their brethren at bot-mid and are hiding out below the minerals (ah, a water stream...). Goliaths are slowly building up in number, but the buildings are slowing down their clumsy movements. With a decent amount of SCVs present, Simmons is able to repair his CC while most still mine. By these methods, not much is gained by the attacking blimps.
With good positioning, and a handful of luck, the goliaths are able to destroy one of the carriers, much to Cer1dan's disappointment. Also, a speedy vulture duo (gotta love those vultures) zooms up to top-mid and finally destroys that Nexus. With a quick scan, Simmons knows that Cer1dan's main doesn't hold any stargates, so top left must be the culprit. This place must fall if he is to have hope.
The carriers finally make a decisive move and come out of hiding, blasting away any resistance in the area. Thus, the last Terran stronghold falls, with many a SCV dying in protection of bot-mid. All of the other buildings are left to themselves, but with the CC gone and resources short, Simmons knows that he must stop those carriers immediately. They come in over the left ridge of Simmons' main and are faced with a good half dozen goliaths. Damaged quite a bit, they run off a little, only to return again from the ramp end. Once more, the goliaths cause lots of damage, losing only 1 of their own and more coming in.
At this very moment, Cer1dan feels the pent-up wrath of the Terran. 4 tanks siege up below the top left ridge and, with hefty use of scan, blow the crap out of the cannons there. Timing is bad, though, as 2 more carriers had just come out. They take their time killing the tanks, but protect the base nonetheless. Both players knew the outcome, but wouldn't dare call it quits yet.
Knowing of the goliath threat, Cer1dan knocks up a quick gathering of zealots and sends them in to help out. In true Simmons style, every unit is used to ward off the attackers. The final battle consists of 3 carriers and 6 zealots, but never underestimate a workout fanatic!
SCVs and a few leftover vultures hit the zealots hard, helping out the precious goliaths, and the goliaths in turn target the carriers. With no cash left and knowing that he's lost, Mr. Simmons puts on a damn good show. The only unit left at the end of this battle is a severely weakened carrier. GGs are exchanged and everybody adjourns to NH for the 3B's (Beer, Bongs, Bitches), courtesy of your's truly.
This game was, without a doubt, a great game. My thanks go out to both players for enduring my Aussie Brand Lag. Now, I'm going to have to ask you to think back to the start of this report. I said that I would make Simmons famous, right? Well, at the end of the game, I got a little message saying "BTW, I'm CrackHeadJeb." Yes, that's right, I'm an idiot. Go me.
Funnily enough, Jeb's been in a few of my reports, and each time it was pure coincidence. In none of those reports did I know who he was upon entering the game. Maybe it's fate, maybe it's just me blathering on even more, who knows? Anyway, do you know what song appeared in that game's alt-texts? Write it down, and move on.
Well, with game 1 out of the way I suggest that you rest a little before going on; there's still plenty to get through.
Game 2: Predators
I once again chose the map, being the reporter and all that. Cer1dan had played on the map before, but not recently. Neither players wished to check the map out beforehand, leaving everything to chance, and so we were off!
Simmons drew the brown Terrans, and Cer1dan drew the teal Zerg. I suppose I should show the map, as it could get quite confusing from here.
Predators is a five player map, with start spots as indicated on the map above. Each player has a natural expansion located slightly clockwise from them. Also, there's a mineral only expansion for each player located around a central high-ground area. These mineral only expansions are equidistant from 2 start spots, meaning that they can be very difficult to take and hold.
There are also plateaus located near the naturals/mains for each player, where various offensive (and sneaky) tactics can be tried out. Depending on what start spot you receive, these plateaus could either reach your main or your natural. Also, they can reach into the gulley-type pathway, that is generally the quickest way to get from base to base.
Once again, WilliamWC3 and Cyco-Dude joined me in my obsing while, as can be clearly seen, Cer1dan received the top left start position (Zerg) and Simmons received the top right start spot (Terran). The close proximity of the players could make this a very fast-paced game...
Both players started out with fairly typical builds, although Cer1dan's choice of fast lurkers could work either way. The lovable Zerg built an overlord on 9, then an extractor (going from 9 to 8). This was followed by a spawning pool, going from 8 to 7 peons. Due to this, he was able to get a lair at 12 supply and a hydra den at 13.
Simmons built a depot at 8 and a barracks on 10. Another barracks and depot followed at roughly the same time as Cer1dan was getting his lair. These 4 terran buildings formed a sort of wall, meaning that anything bigger than a zergling or marine would have to walk around the long way, just to get at the command centre.
As would be expected, the initial overlord is sent scouting and happens to go clockwise, running directly into the Terran at first chance. Also, due to the layout, Cer1dan managed to see the SCVs without his overlord coming into range of any of their sensors. This caused Simmons to scout clockwise, only finding his enemy at the last possible chance. The odd map placements also helped stall our Terran's scouting, confusing him at every turn (well, probably not).
By the time Simmons found his enemy, he had a force of 10 marines back home. Seeing only a handful of lings to defend, these marines are instantly sent off to harass. Proving he isn't just a pretty face, Cer1dan foresees this problem and hastily hatches some more lings, starts a creep colony and morphs 2 hydras. Lurker aspect is getting towards being finished, but isn't quite there yet.
Even with the most stalling that he could conjure, the Zerg forces were wiped completely away, leaving a sunken colony to morph in (2 extra seconds) and a hydra to sulk off, turning into a lurker egg. With 5 marines and no medics, Simmons decides that facing the sunken wouldn't do any good and runs off towards Cer1dan's minerals. 1 marine dies on the way there.
Running past any danger, a lone zergling stands in the marines' way. Defiantly erupting into a bubbling pile of goo, the zerglings efforts don't seem to help much. The drones run and, with nothing else to shoot at, the extractor comes under fire. Hey, it was a drone at some point, right? Simmons must've used the attack order on the extractor, because when a lone zergling rocked up and started attacking the marines, they just stood there. Once 1 of them died, more lings were already upon them and all hope was lost for the marines.
And just as their reinforcements arrived, too! Well, if 2 marines count as reinforcements. These both died to the sunken colony, still not managing to bring it fully down.
With a sunken and lurker tech available, it appears as if Cer1dan has lived through the risky period. His opponent will need tanks and scan at the very least, just to be able to effectively combat his tech. This will require Simmons to tech himself, allowing the Zerg to mass like a whore, and altogether placing the risk on the head of the lovable Greasy Gaffer (?).
Possibly not realising that his opponent had lurkers, or just incredibly ballsy, Simmons moves another squad of marines up towards Cer1dan's main. The marines stop roughly halfway there, awaiting some medic support. A scouting ling brings back the news that the marines are camped there, right below Cer1dan's plateau...
With lightning quick reflexes, I closed down the porn on my monitor and went back to the report. Hah, mum never saw a thing! Oh yes, and a lurker is dispatched to surprise the marines from above, killing 2 and driving the rest off.
At about this time in the game, my ISP decided to be homosexually gay and disced me. Dammit! Oh well, Jeb saved the replay for me, and I was back on B.net before the players ran away in panic, so it all worked out alright.
With a grand total of 4 lurkers (1 on the cliff, 3 in the gulley), Mr. Cer1dan starts a lurker push, hoping that his nemesis has no detection readily available. The push is slow going, and the main cause of it is to act as a distraction. Thus, Cer1dan expands to his natural (top middle), attempting to crush Simmons into a bloody pulp through sheer force.
The push is going according to plan, and already 1 marine has been skewered. A lurker pops up, runs forward and... gets smashed up by arclite. Yes, 2 tanks have arranged themselves behind that wall of buildings that I mentioned before. Only 1 could reach this first lurker, though, lulling Cer1dan into a false sense of power. After all, 3 lurkers can take out a tank if there's no detection, right?
Well, the fact that there are actually 2 tanks there led to the quick death of 1 of the lurkers (the second guy to run up) and the severe harming of the initial lurker. Thus, without any detection present, the Knightly Terran managed to fend off a lurker push.
In celebration of this fact, good old Mr. Simmons decided to expand to his natural (mid-rightish). Ever the optimist, Cer1dan had an overlord running around like an idiot near there. Seeing the CC being made, 5 hydralisks started a long journey the long way around the map, ultimately going to come up from below the natural. They arrive and come under tank fire again, but have the sense to run a little back, still in range of the just-made refinery.
M&M forces are frantically hurried over there, not wanting to lose any SCVs in this ordeal. The preliminary marines arrive just after the refinery explodes and, with medics not there yet (stim), the marines die. 2 seconds later, however, it is a different story. Plenty of marines and medics beat the absolute crap out of the small hydra force, with the refinery being rebuilt even as the hydras were still there.
Hoping to gain a large advantage like he did in game 1, Cer1dan moves a drone down towards the mid left start spot. Of course, Simmons learns his lesson quickly and has a marine stationed there. The drone dies before a hatchery can be even started.
Obviously getting antsy, Cer1dan tries another varying tactic. This time it's of the drop variety. 12 hydras are loaded up into overlords and sent over to the Terran main. Preparing for more lurkers, Simmons already had a couple turrets around his mineral line. As such, an overlord is killed before it can drop any units.
The other 8 hydras are dropped quite well and they forced the SCVs to run away a bit. Tank shells exploded, marines took various drugs, and medics stood around painting their nails and swapping college lesbian stories. A tank died, along with half a dozen marines and 6 or more SCVs. Not much else was damaged, although the Zerg definitely came out on the bad end, losing all 12 hydras and all 3 overlords.
Never one to waste an oppurtunity, no matter how badly came by that oppurtunity may be, Cer1dan runs a drone and 3 or 4 hydras over to the mid-left natural, claiming it as his own. A marine was there, so Simmons knows about the expansion, but what is he going to do about it?
Map Update!
Simmons only has 1 expansion, and his main is getting dryer every second. This is mainly due to the fact that he has more SCVs than atoms in his hand. The entire area in between his bases is populated by his army and various buildings, so that whole space could be considered "his."
Cer1dan has 2 expansions and his main, but doesn't have as many workers as his Terran counterpart. The area between his main and his natural has 1 overlord there, if anything. He appears contained, but he is constantly doing some form of offensive, so containment is definitely out (especially on this map).
The game is pretty even up until now, and the next events are the most important. A decisive win in a big battle could mean everything.
Using the gosu skill of Zerg-massing, Cer1dan had a rather large army already prepared. They all moved out towards the Terran main, with lurkers burrowed and hydras drinking some cold Hydrochloric Acid Soda©. The Zerg forces rushed forward, smashing right into a large tank/M&M force. Not wanting to waste everything on this hopeless skirmish, the zerg forces are brought back with minimal losses.
Massing even more hydras could possibly be a bad move here. Something new would be required, as all of the hydra efforts hadn't worked yet. On the other side of the coin, Simmons had access to movable detectors, tanks and M&M. He had teched while being constantly attacked in different spots, living to tell the tale. So, both players had lived through a risk period and were now getting down to business.
Simmons started the action with a roving science vessel casting irradiate on a lurker. Hydras gave chase and, seeing tanks in tank mode, the lurkers got up. All of the Zerg forces rushed into the enemy just as the tanks were finished sieging. D'oh. The result was quite a few dead hydras, 1 tank left over, and a whole heap of marines chasing 2 lurkers away. Technically Simmons won that exchange, but he only has 1 tank left and there are still lurkers roaming the countryside. What this will lead to, who can tell?
Once again taking charge, Cer1dan doesn't let the Terran forces push their way through to his base. A fierce resistance of hydras is launched, with the lurkers coming back into the game. Knowing that there's only 1 tank left, the Zerg forces smash straight into Simmons' core contingent of troops. The science vessel proved it's use in this heated battle, allowing the marines to focus fire on the lurkers.
With the lurkers gone, I must refer to the golden rule of M&M > Hydras. In a few simple moments of pure bloodshed, the only Zerg forces left are 2 lurkers out of range of the Terrans. Irradiate is used and the marines ram directly into the lurkers, with the tank (still alive) firing in the background. Not wanting to lose any time, Simmons proceeds on his merry little way up towards the Zerg main. Surely he must be hurting for troop count now?
Another group of tanks and marines were hastily being built during the constant fighting, aswell as another force of hydras back at Cer1dan's main. Queens also made an appearance, hiding out on the plateau. Who could possibly win this battle?
Well, in short, this battle was a continuous one until the end of the game, so I can't say yet. *Hears groaning*
Simmons ran up until the creep was in sight, then sieged his mighty tanks and stimmed his meagre marines. Hydras exploded in a pool of amino acids and genetic waste products, and this obviously angered Cer1dan. The queens, having just saved up enough energy, let fly some broodlings and made the tanks explode (which makes no sense, seeing as it's a vehicle...)
The remaining hydras assaulted the marines present, but soon realised that they were seriously outnumbered. All reinforcement hydras were grouped together into 2 or 3 groups, staying away from the Marauding Maniacal Marines. In doing so, however, Cer1dan openly gave away his main.
One small band of hydras attempted to defy Mr. Cer1dan's orders and kept on their way to attacking the Terran forces. More tanks and marines had just arrived, making this attempt completely devoid of hope. Noting that these came from the Zerg expansion, Simmons floated a CC down towards bottom left, in order to expand himself.
Another group of hydras started to attack towards the Terran forces but, thinking wisely, they backed off before losing too many of their number. These hydras also came from the mid-left natural and, as they morphed into lurkers, Cer1dan took the mid-left main for his own.
As soon as the lurkers were finished they ran off towards the crossroad that brings the Zerg bases together. At this point, queens dismantled the tanks and sold the scrap metal, allowing the lurkers to burrow in peace. Unfortunately for the ravenous Zerg, this only served to force the marines further into his main. Foolishly the lurkers followed, facing off against more marines than Osama bin Laden.
Now, if you thought he was fucked, try multiplying that number a few times and you'll get roughly the speed at which these lurkers died. In all, they managed to take out less than 6 marines. 5 of these came from when they first ran up to greet the Terrans in the crossroad. Bad tidings indeed.
Something which Cer1dan might not have realised when surrendering his main, was the fact that his entire tech was there. As such, no matter what he could possibly try, he didn't even have the tech to try it anymore.
Always a considerate person, he continued to play even under the circumstances, making my work load even more. Thanks. =/
The main bulk of Simmons' forces went down to the Zerg's mid-left natural expansion, killing whatever happened to be there (ie. nothing much). A drone decided to run away, leading a marine directly towards the Zerg mid-left main expansion. By George, I think that drone is a spy! In any event, this expansion also felt the mighty pinprick of an engorged Terran commander, exploding into nothing more than a pile of mucus. Incidentally, in the Marines Barracks after the battle they were served a beautiful soup, although the Chef wouldn't tell what the ingredients were. "Secret family recipe" is all that he would say.
With every other expansion gone, the only trace of Zerg left on the map was the natural expansion; the one which was taken the first out of anything on the map.
The entire Terran backup squad arrived, helping the 3 marines already there to dismantle the 2 evolution chambers, a spawning pool which just came through, and the entire mining facility. GGs were said, and once again we adjourned to the humble NoHunters community.
Well, game 2 is out of the way, and the score is 1-1. If you're still reading, good work. If you gave up a while ago and are just reading the last paragraph of each game, take some medication for your A.D.D. There's still a long way to go, although part 1 is halfway done.
As seen to the side, a very important part of game 2 happened after the bell. A lone medic was sitting at the mid-left main and, with Will having an SCV left, he embarked on an assassination mission. Apparently the medic had turned Big Will down at the last officers' mixer. Revenge is sweet, isn't it?
Game 3 - River Styx
Upon entering the pre-game room, some of the players told me that I had gosu map selection. I guess it's because I hadn't chosen Temple, and I had selected the map for all 3 games so far! Amazing, huh?
Well, this map should be known to all of you pretty well. After all, it was a ladder map and besides, I'm getting sick of explaining the damn maps. Well, I'm sure a picture will appease the witless among you, so here it is:
The Bridge Over The River Styx (it's official name) is a 2 player map. To the side of each main lies a bridge that leads to an island expansion, of sorts. Sure, it can be reached by land, but the enemy generally has to drop guys there to get at it due to the fact that the main is in the way. Also, each base has a natural expansion located closer to the action, closer to the outside bridges for each player. These are often the place of fierce battles, and as such are harder to keep than the island expansions.
Also, if that weren't enough for some of the expansion whores out there, there are 2 expansions located on outcrops of the lower bridge. Each of these expansions has the bridge running through the middle (can't build on it), with a geyser on 1 edge and minerals on the opposite edge. It is very possible to have 2 people take the same spot and not run over each other's peons.
This map is a favourite of mine and, hopefully, everyone elses. Go play on it (after reading my report) and see for yourself. Fun for everybody aged 11 to 69. Sorry Hash Oil and (DL)Spam, you're too young it appears. =/
Simmons receives the orange Terrans (again!) at the bottom start spot. He goes for a fairly typical build, with a fairly early refinery to combat the inevitable ground troops from Cer1dan.
Incidentally, Cer1dan receives the red Protoss at the top start spot. Knowing full well that Simmons would probably go for harassment vultures again, he decides to get early gas and a cybernetics core. Will this produce the same results of game 1? Read on to find out!
An SCV scout sent out by Mr. Simmons has started to hack away at the assimilator until a marine arrives to help out. At this point a probe has chased the SCV away, and a dragoon pops out of the nearby gateway before either the marine or the SCV could kill anything. 2 gateways with dragoon tech is now facing off against 2 factories, 1 with a machine shop add-on.
As soon as the first vulture pops out it is sent up towards Cer1dan. Of course, this was sent before the marine found the goon. As such, by the time it arrived, the vulture was facing off against 4 dragoons. Lurching away with only a smidgen of health left, the vulture sped off with the Protoss forces trailing behind. The probe that chased the SCV away went about the dirty little business of expanding to the Protoss "island." Seconds later, the 4 goons arrived at the Terran main, where mines had been researched instead of siege mode. 1 tank and 4 vultures started assaulting as best they could but, as you would expect, the vultures died or ran off scared. The mines weren't close enough and the tanks still didn't have siege.
Whilst siege mode was being researched, the vultures kept trying to lure the Protoss into the mines, making the goons cautious to go far. 1 was dead from tank pot-shots but, venturing out from behind his barracks, that tank came directly into the remaining goons. They hit hard and fast, killing this tank.
Before any rejoicing can be done, however, siege has finished. A vulture absorbs damage and the 2 tanks left siege up. In an attempt to beat them by getting closer, Cer1dan runs his goons straight into 2 spider mines. Together with one round of siege blasts, this finishes off the 4 goon threat.
After a little teching and rebuilding, both players are at the go again. Cer1dan moves 4 more goons out and they are soon accompanied by an observer. Seeing the mines and tanks that protect the Terran base, the goons remain sitting outside. Once again proving how much of a whore he is, Cer1dan starts a nexus down at his natural. Back on the human front, Simmons is busily preparing a surprise for his Protoss enemy.
A dropship loads up a tank and 2 vultures, then heads straight up the middle of the map to come to the Protoss main from the left. Along the way, however, were 2 observers sitting tight near the bridge exits. Thus, with the extra warning, Cer1dan is able to move some dragoons up from his natural. By these means the dropship ended up unloading it's units, them letting off 1 shot each, and then the tank was dead. The vultures were loaded back up and the dropship ran like a bitch away from the plasma bolts. The vultures were dropped off by the gateways and they then ran the hell out of there.
The dropship, too, ran away as fast as it possibly could. As a final insult to the vulture tech, these 2 cowards ran directly into the goons amassing outside of Simmons' main. Of course, he now knew of Cer1dan's instant plans and prepared thusly.
Knowing that his opponent has his natural expansion, Simmons went ahead and started building a command centre over at his "island" expansion. What he failed to notice was the little observer, floating innocently enough above the expansion. Little did anyone know, but that observer was actually the sci-fi embodiment of The Great Eye (Sauron), searching for his One Ring! Mwuahahaha!!!
Ahem. Anyway, with observer tech already in it is obvious that Cer1dan has access to a robotics facility. As such, a shuttle is made as soon as the SCV started building. Shortly afterwards, 2 goons are dropped off at the unguarded and not-yet-online expansion. Seeing his peril, the little SCV destroyed the foundations of the CC and floated away gracefully (ie. only swearing in 11 different languages). With that expansion down and shuttles around, Simmons knew that he must break out and take control of the map.
The amassed forces of tanks and vultures zipped out of the Terran base, running into a medium-sized contingent of dragoons. Seeing the tanks present, Cer1dan decided to run his goons back a little, waiting for the 2 dragoons en route to arrive and help out. When the forces finally clashed in the proper manner, the reinforcement goons weren't enough to hold back the onslaught. The Terran forces had successfully broken out, and the 2 dragoons over at the "island" couldn't do anything even if they tried, for 2 tanks were left behind to guard over the little bridge leading from Simmons' main to his "island."
In an attempt to fake his opponent out, Simmons starts to send his forces up the higher bridge while the fog of war remained lifted for Cer1dan. The 5 tanks and 2 vultures remaining then turned around and went along the lower bridge. Genius, huh? Well, it would be but for the fact that there were observers all over the place. As such the dragoons that were sent to waylay the Terran troops backtracked, arriving at the Protoss natural to back up his standing forces just in time. The result was not pretty, with the tanks remaining in tank mode and the vultures taking their time to get there (they were laying mines).
Without the firepower of siege mode to aid them, the Terran troops died a horrible, horrible death. But why would Cer1dan have 2 expansions and so little troops? Well, the answer showed itself about 10 seconds after the tanks and vultures died. 2 carriers started hitting a command centre that was being built in Simmons' main (for floating later on) and took the Terran commander by complete surprise. The carriers showed up at 12:30 into the game, and, with scouting not showing any stargates, it soon became obvious that the problem lay at Cer1dan's "island." Back at his main, though, the Terran had immediate problems.
An armory was constructed as quickly as possible and a wraith was started in the starport. Also, to slow down his death, Simmons constructed some turrets. Could all of this combat the gayness of carriers? Well, The Champion Of Gays (Fitness Instructor Simmons) knew he had to defend his title. Assuming that he could fend off the carriers, what would happen next? More carriers, probably. So, with carriers attacking all that he held dear, Mr. Terran himself came up with a devious plan. But first, some pictures for the illiterate of you.
Just being even more homsexual than before, Cer1dan expands to Simmons' island. But, while this was happening, a dropship secretly made it's way up towards Cer1dan's island expansion. 3 vultures were dropped and, with no defense around at all, they wipe out every single probe there, only losing 1 of their number. And just as the tanks and vultures left at Simmons' base were preparing to go strike down his enemy, disaster struck. The goliaths were too slow and didn't do shit to the (now 3) carriers. Furthermore, the minerals were nearly all gone and the only hope he had was gone.
Knowing that all was lost, Simmons conceded the game gracefully. His title of Most Gay had been stolen from him but, then again, that's not such a bad thing.
Well, that game was slightly gay wasn't it? The one consolation is that Cer1dan will never play Protoss again in this series. Let's move on, ok?
Game 4 - Mausoleum
With the score at 2-1 in favour of Cer1dan, we move on to game 4. Once again I was complemented on my map choice and, being so very humble, my head swelled to gargantuan size. This map isn't too well known, seeing as it isn't Temple, so I'm sure that you will all want a map picture.
Mausoleum is a quaint little 4 player map, with starts at North, South, East and West. Each base has a natural located closer to the pathway, yet can still go undetected by a sloppy player. Furthermore, there are high-ground expansions located in between the players. 2 are in the corners (top-left and bottom-right), while the other 2 are more inland. It's a very fun map to play, as the number of things to do can surprise you. Even if you have no intention of taking the cliff expansions, dropping some tanks there could prove to be very advantageous. Also, there aren't any ramps which will please a lot of people whom are sick of the Lost Temple, where the ramp is the most important part of the map.
For this game the matchup is a reversal of games 1 and 3. Simmons received the brown Protoss at the bottom-most main. His opponent, Cer1dan, received the white Terrans at the main located on the right side of the map. Both players know what they are doing (assumedly), and so we begin!
Simmons goes for a pretty standard Protoss build, with a pylon on 8 then two gateways on 10 and 13 respectively. Cer1dan also goes for a regular style build, except for the fact that he is doing a wall-in! On Mausoleum! If you don't understand why I have exclamation marks, you soon will.
Mr. Cer1dan builds a barracks on 8, a depot on 8, a refinery on 10 and then another depot on 11. The 2 depot and 1 barrack build isn't enough for the wall-in to be complete, and after a probe scouts out this oddly placed base, a factory is added. This factory happens to be situated to the right of the other buildings, and slightly down, but still inhibits movement past. I didn't think it would stop anything, but I must refer to the number 1 rule of the Internet: Strega is an idiot.
Obviously wishing to capitalise on this odd behaviour as best he could, Simmons sends his first zealot along with 2 probes to attack the wall-in. Of course, the shock of not being able to get through was soon gotten over, as all 3 units started attacking a depot. Shortly afterwards (5 or 6 seconds), 2 more probes arrived and the only thing opposing them was a single marine firing, and an SCV repairing.
The zealot dies to the marine's firepower, and the probes start getting shot at. It would appear as if the wall-in had worked! But wait, what's that? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it another SuperMan rip-off? No, it's a zealot! Arriving exactly 7 seconds after the first one died, this zealot launches himself head first into the depot, killing it off (finally) in 3 hits. The factory has just finished and is making some vultures shortly after this happens, and more probes come up to help out.
With the wall broken, 2 more zealots soon arrive, along with some more probes. What the hell is up with all the probes? The marine dies quickly and, with some careful coaxing, all of the Forces Of Cheese (ie. Protoss) are lured to the mineral line, instead of attacking the factory. The SCVs present quickly surround the zealot closest them and kill it mercilessly. 2 vultures are now roaming around, with a third being made. 3 zealots and an ass-load of probes still remain in the Terran base, however, and there are very few SCVs left.
Through a continuous procession of hit and run, the vultures kill some more zealots and probes, but all of the SCVs have been hunted down, with only a few left mining minerals. The Protoss army of Slutdom beat down on the command centre, not caring that a vulture is firing away at them. With the CC dead, all is lost for the valiant Cer1dan. Sure, he has enough money to build another vulture, but he has no supply whatsoever. As such, it is only a matter of time until every unit is dead and the buildings destroyed.
This was the funniest game to watch live, but I guess some people might not see it that way. Whether it was the demented wall-in on Mausoleum, or the fact that 4 probes were attacking, with more coming in, I don't know. There was just something that made me laugh my ass off whilst watching this game. And a note to all of the raters out there: If you are thinking about this game, and are about to rate this part of the report, think back a while. Think to the first and second games. Those were actual good games, so don't be hard on me simply because this is the last game of Part 1. Hell, go and read Part 2 before rating anything.
Don't forget kids, try to figure out what songs featured and who plays the songs. I'll give you a hint: They are all songs from different bands, so if you know 1 song and band then none of the others came from that band. Anyway, remember to comment about how great I am. Either that or visit My Site.

A Final Notice
I started this report back in september of 2001, and it is now early-September, 2002. I had been working on this for a long time, whilst periodically being a slackass and abandoning all efforts, and now I rue the fact even more. Not only could I have actually finished part 2 ages ago, but I could've avoided disaster.
This disaster of which I speak happened recently. You see, I had just bought a new computer, and my mum was about to buy a new one of her own. We had planned on giving our crappy old machine to my grandparents, but before then we would format it etc. Well, I went onto this monstrosity of a computer and searched through all of my folders and the such, uploading to my site everything that looked important.
I didn't look on the desktop.
So, a third of the way through game 7, and without having loaded part 2 up to this or any other site, I lost it all. All of my pictures (already up here thankfully) and, more disgustingly, all of part 2. Luckily I had already put this file up online, so I have something to show for my efforts, but the simple fact is that I don't have the time or the memory to rewrite part 2 (and I've misplaced the replays, incidentally).
Nobody is as disappointed with the way this has ended as I am, but I am forced to reveal the final tally here, lest the memory of these games be forgotten forever. Highlight here: CrackHeadJeb: 4, Cer1dan: 3.
If, by some fluked chance, I can get hold of the replays again, then I might consider coming back and doing the uniquitous "Part 2," but don't hold your breath.
So, in as round about a way as possible, I am saying this: I am resigning. I wish all of the new and old reporters good times, and I may drop in occasionally to read some of the latest reports, but essentially I am gone. Now, in true Strega style, I leave you all with a poem:
Slept in a dusk so deep
Her magics worn asunder
The epitomised
Goddess
Is reborn
Tearing away at all
In her
Frenzied
Rage
She breaks the hate upon her
And once again is crowned
Ciao, Strega~
