Hi y'all,
This is a battle report between Demon_Soul with random Night Elves, and MarkyMark with random Orcs.
The map is Scorched Basin. Here's the replay.

The game started with MarkyMark at the 6.30 position and Demon_Soul at 8. Demon_Soul went for Keeper(KotG)/Huntress harrassment while MarkyMark went with "New Orc", a Tauren Chieftain(TC)/Grunt option made possible by the 1.03 patch.

Demon_Soul started with Altar, Moonwell (MW), Hunters Hall, double Ancient of War (AOW). Meanwhile, MarkyMark went for Barracks, Orc Burrow, Altar, Burrow, War Mill.

&ltStrategic Note>
MarkyMark made an early mistake here, by making 10 peons early. He should have made only nine peons, so that two Grunts could have accompanied the Chieftain in early creeping missions before the second Burrow came online. As it was, only one grunt could be made.
</Strategic Note>

MarkyMark's first Grunt and Demon_Soul's KotG came out at the same time, and the Grunt went off for a quick scout around the map. Luckily for MarkyMark, Demon_Soul must have had a Grunt blind-spot just then, as the Keeper could have easily entangled it to its death. The Grunt skedaddled for safety up to the top of the screen, and took the long way home rather than risk death by entanglement.

Then the KotG went a-scouting anti-clockwise, but went straight for the 4.30 spot, missing MarkyMark's base completely. The lone scouting Grunt was coming home, and got a bit of a surprise to run past the KotG , but the lucky Grunt made it home without entanglement.

At about 3m50s MarkyMark started upgrading to Stronghold, for that all important Spirit Lodge. At the same time, Demon_Soul worked out where MarkyMark was and ran back to harrass him.

Round 1: First contact - 4m
Demon_Soul ran back just as MarkyMark came out to meet him. At this point, MarkyMark has TC and 3 Grunts, Demon_Soul has KtoG and 3 Huntresses, making it an even-steven contest. One Tauren Stomp stunned the KotG, who got a few nicks and scratches then retreated towards his home base to heal. The KotG twice entangled the TC, but entangle hardly works at all on heroes, so all it did was waste mana. After dancing round each other for a bit both sides retreated and the KotG greedily slurped all the moon juice there was on tap back in base.

Both bases continued to build troops, with Demon_Soul's double AOW giving him a clear production advantage. Demon_Soul also began upgrading to Tree of Ages.

Round 2: Keeper Harrassment - 4m30s
At this point, MarkyMark decided to invest in some base defenses, while Demon_Soul continued to build Moonwells and Huntresses. MarkyMark ran off to creep his natural at 6, but TC with 3 Grunts weren't strong enough to finish the job quickly. While MarkyMark was busy playing with the creeps Demon_Soul ran into MarkyMark's base with his KotG and 4 Huntresses. He quickly destroyed the tower as it was building, then entangled a fresh Grunt, with a serving of peon harrassment for dessert. MarkyMark had to break off his ill-judged creeping attempt and come back to defend his base. The peons bunkered down and suddenly there was no place to go for Demon_Soul's troops. One final entangle on a peon and a town portal ended sortie number two. Peons were harmed, but no peons were actually killed in the making of Round 2.

Round 3: Aborted Harrassment - 6m
Just then, MarkyMark's Stronghold completed. MarkyMark tried to take the fight to Demon_Soul's base, and headed out with TC and four 0/1 Grunts. Demon_Soul healed up, and ran back to MarkyMark's base, leaving his four 0/0 Huntresses behind for some reason. The KotG met the small orcish army, and was stunned again by a mighty minotaur hoof to the ground. He then kept running into MarkyMark's base, with Grunts chasing after, and even further behind, the ever increasing horde of Huntresses in pursuit. But as soon as it was started, the skirmish was over. Keeping clear of the TC and his stunning shoes, the KotG navigated safely back to his base. No units died, but the Moonwell stocks were kept low.

At this point MarkyMark has a completed Stronghold, and has a nearly completed tower. Demon_Soul's Tree of Ages is almost complete. MarkyMark remembered some base management and started a Spirit Lodge, another tower, burrow, and the Fortress upgrade. Demon_Soul started an Ancient Protector to give him some defense if the fight came back all the way to his base.

Round 4: Expansion Creeping - 7m
In the only non-interactive fights of the game, both sides ran off to creep their adjacent expansion, on the far side of the opponent. Demon_Soul's superior army of KotG and 8 0/0 Huntresses made this easy, levelling the KotG in the process. MarkyMark's TC and 5 0/1 Grunts made harder work of it, but managed to creep the expansion and retreat before Demon_Soul could return to harrass the orc base some more.

Both sides immediately sent a worker out to their expansion site, and Demon_Soul started an Ancient of Wind. MarkyMark started a Witch Doctor (WD).

Round 5: Containment - 8m50s

Both sides headed for each others bases, and the two armies met en route. The Grunts got in a couple of whacks against the superior Huntress force before the Huntresses retreated to base. MarkyMark retreated also, realising a pitched battle would utterly murder him.

Two more Huntresses popped out, and this was enough to convince Demon_Soul that he would win any encounter that occurred. The KotG and 10 0/0 huntresses moved towards the orcs cowering in their base. The TC led 5 1/1 Grunts and an unupgraded WD.

The Witch Doctor slapped down a Sentry Ward which played an invaluable role, letting MarkyMark keep tabs on Demon_Soul's army. MarkyMark wanted to keep Demon_Soul occupied while bringing master Witch Doctors online, as their healing wards would allow the Grunts to pummel the foe into submission. In the meantime, the Sentry Ward allowed MarkyMark to know if Demon_Soul's forces were about to wander off and discover the completely undefended expansion at 6.

The next few minutes involved MarkyMark trying to lure Demon_Soul within range of the two towers at the front of his base, while Demon_Soul contented himself with slowly whittling MarkyMark's troops away. Demon_Soul killed units and retreated to heal the wounded while MarkyMark made more sacrificial TC's and Grunts while the Witch Doctor upgrades continued.

Round 6: Ballista Strike - 10m20s
At 10m20s Demon_Soul brought up a Ballista to try and chisel MarkyMark's base open, but unluckily for him MarkyMark was venturing out with his newly resurrected TC and 4 remaining 1/1 Grunts. The Ballista never hit the towers once, and got stuck on the wrong side of the wall of Huntresses. The Ballista went down, bringing the TC to lvl 2, matching the KotG. Curiously, Demon_Soul didn't make another Ballista, even though this was perhaps the best way of breaking the orc base open.

&ltStrategic Note>
At this point Demon_Soul switched to Hippogryph Riders. While capable of taking down peons or Grunts and living to laugh about it, Hippogryph Riders kinda suck against anything that can fight back. Chimaeras are a much better flying unit, although they were not available to Demon_Soul at this point.
</Strategic Note>

Bouyed with the heady success of the Ballista destruction, MarkyMark then pushed his luck and tried to take out a Huntress or two. The TC was entangled and focus fired, but managed to retreat on very low health.

Meanwhile, Demon_Soul's Ancient of Wind started pumping Hippogryphs, and the AOW's were making Archers. MarkyMark started a Farseer and a second Spirit Lodge to get increased Witch Doctor support.

Round 7: A Towering Folly - 12m10s
MarkyMark's auxillary hero the Farseer popped out, but was trapped in by buildings! It took him a while to realise this, and it was only after another foolhardy attack that completely destroyed his standing army that he realised that that his Chain Lightning machine was trapped. Luckily, Demon_Soul had a healthy respect for the two towers, and refused to finish off MarkyMark when there was no army to oppose him. The Farseer and a Witch Doctor then vented their anger on an innocent tower that had done no wrong, apart from blocking the career ambitions of the Farseer. Down the tower came, weakening MarkyMark's defenses still further.

While this was happening, Demon_Soul started building his expansion, and had Hippogryphs coming out. Archers waited for their trusty steeds to show up. In MarkyMark's base, the master shaman upgrade completed, as well as the second Spirit Lodge. Although he had no army, his expansion gave him the income to quickly build one, and with healing wards he might actually keep his Grunts alive now.

At 13m20s Demon_Soul had KotG, 8 0/0 huntresses and an Archer outside MarkyMark's base, penning him in. He also had a Hippogryph and a couple of Archers at his base, and a couple more Hippogryphs queued. He was hurting for funds a little bit, with his expansion not finished yet. MarkyMark had the brand new Farseer, a new Grunt, and the wily Witch Doctor that served him so well with that initial Sentry Ward.

Round 8: Cheeky Overconfidence - 14m
Once freed, the Farseer immediately ran up and gave the Huntresses a little *what for* with his Chain Lightning. They obligingly chased his retreating ass into the orc base, where the lone remaining tower got a few shots in. Then they retreated, and made as if to move towards MarkyMark's undefended expansion. MarkyMark panicked, and threw his meagre forces out in front of the larger army in order to stop Demon_Soul from discovering his expansion.

MarkyMark's army consisted of a lvl 2 TC, lvl 1 FS, 2 2/1 Grunts and 3 master Witch Doctors. Demon_Soul had a lvl 3 KotG, 8 0/0 Huntresses and an Archer. The TC was entangled and focus fired, and quickly succumbed (again) to a wave of huntresses despite the presence of a Healing Ward. Just after that, a Stasis Trap went off, stunning the whole Night Elf side. This gave the Grunts some precious seconds to heal-up and wreak their *rewengey* on the Huntresses and their sickly leader, the KotG.

But that was over all too soon, and the Huntresses soon turned their attention to the fragile Farseer, who also died with the quickness.

With the death of the two heroes, Demon_Soul retreated to base to heal his 13/725 hp KotG, with 5 surviving Huntresses accompanying him, all badly wounded.

Ironically, the hero death actually didn't hurt MarkyMark that badly. Because the TC had been dying so readily throughout the match, he was only level 2, and so regenerated quickly.

Round 9: The Tide Turns - 16m
By the time Demon_Soul's forces had replenished themselves at the moonwell and run back, the TC had popped out again. Demon_Soul still had 3 Hippogryph Riders back at his base, but the armies that clashed this time were Demon_Soul's lvl 3 KotG and 5 0/0 Huntresses, and MarkyMark's lvl 2 TC, 4 2/1 Grunts and 5 master Witch Doctors. This would be a matchup of 20 vs 27 food, and the larger army had upgrades as well.

Demon_Soul's troops retreated all the way back to their base, where the recently drained Moonwells offered cold comfort. While this was going on Demon_Soul cleverly retreated his 4 Hippogryph Riders to the back of the base, so they wouldn't have to face the wrath of angry Grunts and Witch Doctors.

The Huntresses and KotG were quickly annihilated by the angry orcish horde, when a hail of insects began pestering the horde from the skies. The Hippogryph Riders had joined the battle at last. The Grunts retreated in confusion from the unknown menace, with the TC leading the way.

&ltStrategic Note>
Both sides showed their inexperience here. Demon_Soul should have kept his Hippogryph Riders with his main army to give him the best chance of surviving the attack. Splitting his army in two like this basically cost him his chance of winning the fight.

MarkyMark's Grunt retreat was foolishness, as he should have just ignored the Hippogryph Riders and just plonked Healing Wards down. Hippogryph Riders do such poor damage that it is unlikely that even one Grunt would be killed before the base was destroyed.
</Strategic Note>

The Hippogryph Riders chased the orcs away in disarray, then curled round behind MarkyMark's base to attack the undefended peon stream. Demon_Soul also began the laborious task of rebuilding his ground troops.

Round 10: Base Destruction - 18M
At this point, MarkyMark had a lvl 3 TC, 6 2/2 Grunts and 7 master Witch Doctors. Demon_Soul had 4 0/0 Hippogryph Riders doing what they do best, waiting for the opposition to go away and then harrass things that can't fight back. Back at base, he had 2 fresh 0/0 Huntresses and a Hippogryph. Two more Huntresses popped out as the orcs swarmed in, and those buildings that could, rose up to protect all that Night Elves hold dear. Healing Wards proved too much for the defenders however, as the orcs' only casualties were some Witch Doctors that wandered too near some giant trees from the wrong side of town. The KotG showed up, but was only able to make a brief visit before being sent back to the Altar from whence he came.

At this point Demon_Soul decided to send in the reserves, and his Hippogryph Riders began slaughtering innocent peons in MarkyMark's main base. They killed them all, but then a newly revived lvl 1 Farseer popped out and scared them off.

&ltStrategic Note>
Although MarkyMark seems to have this game in the bag, if he had not had his expansion keeping the money flowing in, this attack would have crippled his economy, leaving him with little way of fighting back against the aerial scourge, since he had carelessly let his armada of Witch Doctors get slaughtered taking out Demon_Soul's ancients.
</Strategic Note>

MarkyMark focussed on destroying Demon_Soul's Altar, to keep the KotG shenannigans to a minimum. Demon_Soul in return came back with his Hippogryph Riders and focus fired the last Witch Doctor to death. This would have been grave if there was not a steady trickle of WD's making their way slowly to what was left of Demon_Soul's base. They retreated from Demon_Soul's base while the TC and Grunts kept working their mojo. The Hippogryph Riders focus fired on the Tauren Chieftain, whose 950hp and high regeneration rate allowed him to ignore them.

MarkyMark had started producing anti-air when the Hippogryph Riders ravaged his base earlier, which basically just consisted of more Witch Doctors. A Headhunter and 7 WD's combined neatly to rip the 4 Hippogryph Riders to shreds.

Round 11: Playing for Time - 22m
Although the death of his primary base was assured, Demon_Soul tenaciously tried to keep his Tree of Eternity alive, by uprooting it and repairing with Wisps. Demon_Soul had nearly 2000 gold at this point, his trouble was he couldn't spend it fast enough. He hurriedly built buildings at this expansion, including two Chimaera Roosts.

&ltStrategic Note>
Chimaeras are great, and are really the only way that Demon_Soul could have won from here. But ALL of the units that MarkyMark had just been making recently were anti-air. That's an inhospitable environment for those Chimaeras to come into. If Demon_Soul had wanted Chimaeras, he should never have made Hippogryph Riders. 3 upgraded DotT's would have been much more helpful to have earlier in the game when the Hippogryph Riders first saw combat.
</Strategic Note>

At 24m, MarkyMark had finished destroying Demon_Soul's main base, and was ready to move on to his expansion. Demon_Soul started making a Chimaera and upgrading the acid spit as well, but these never saw the light of day and gg's were exchanged all round.
