I decided to fire up the regular SC again and see what would transpire. There isn't much available for public games at 5 in the morning however. I finally gave in and joined a 5v3 comp game. But I decided to play out an experiment. I would play normally, building and expanding as usual, but I wouldn't say a single thing, and wouldn't help out my partners with defense or attacking. Just to see what they would say and do. Turns out some interesting things can happen...
Map: Hunters
Players: White Protoss (me), Brown Protoss, Orange Terran, Blue Terran, Purple Terran
Computers: All Zerg (yellow, red, and teal)
All of the races were chosen manually. Obviously the other players wanted the easiest possible computer AI. I imagine they also picked Terran because they were super newbies. Turns out the three Terrans displayed lots of signs of newbieness, you know, things like not building enough SCV's, one Barracks which remains idle for long periods of time, turrets in silly places because they saw scary overlords, and so on. However, the Protoss guy was very good, going for an early gas build, upgrading weapons and armor, having multiple gates in constant production, and expanding properly. It seemed he was a little too good for this game.
I did a basic 3 gate zealot build, because that's essentially all you need vs. the computer AI. Basically I just sat around making probes, pylons, and zealots. I did get gas eventually after fully saturating my minerals and eventually started upgrading and expanding. I really wasn't trying very hard, and I certainly wouldn't play this lackadazically in a real game. But by having 3 gates always producing, I accumulated a large number of zealots very quickly. The Terran players interspersed some comments about how big my army was, and how I should attack, but I just stayed silent and aloof.
Eventually the Terran guys started growing suspicious of me, thinking I was going to betray them, or that I was just some dumb newbie. The Protoss guy remained rather quiet too, but he was responding to his teammates. The Protoss and purple Terran had killed off one of the Zerg computers already with zealots and marines. I just continued building and gathering, not saying a word. Finally the Protoss guy says "okay white, move your butt. If you're going to kill us, kill us, or at least attack a computer." I still say nothing at all. I have about 40 zealots by now, which could easily wipe the floor with both remaining comps and the Terrans. But the Protoss guy would present a challenge, with his many zealots and dragoons, and his tech advantage.
So the Protoss guy gets tired of me, and proposes that everyone kill me. Naturally, being the cowards that the Terrans were, they joined up right away. The Protoss guy was a familiar, "good" guy. I was the evil unknown. After all, I didn't say anything the whole game. Obviously I must be a bad guy. The Protoss turns off share vision and allying. I do the same. The other Terrans leave vision on (hehe) and I get ready for a giant battle in the center. The orange and purple Terrans are helping out with some small forces of marines and tanks. The blue Terran, however, is scared to death. He says, "I surrender white. Just please don't kill me." I chuckle softly to myself.
The epic battle takes place in the center area. (Sorry guys, I forgot to take a screenshot AGAIN. :( I promise I'll get better at this.) My 40 zealots take on a very large force of zealots, dragoons, marines, a firebat, and a couple tanks. If the enemy Protoss was a newbie, I imagine I could have taken down all three of them, but it was just too much. My zealots fight valiantly, and kill off a lot of enemies, but they finally succumb to the overwhelming forces. The three of them then get to work on my natural expansion. This is when I finally decide to speak up.
"Thank you, everyone, for this very interesting study on how paranoia works."
Silence. I think they're in shock that I spoke.
"Saying and doing nothing apparently makes me an evil backstabber. Just because I decided not to attack, and just sat around producing and gathering, I guess I'm a bad guy."
Naturally, the three Terrans are sniping at me to shut up. After a little more preaching, I confront the Protoss guy.
Me: "Brown, you're a good player. Much better than these three guys. Why do you play here?"
Him: "In truth, I was going to betray everyone myself. But you were stronger."
Me: "So you had to kill me first. :)"
Him: "Yeah. :)"
Me: "That's very smart, though. Good initiative."
Him: "Thanks. Everyone followed my order...."
Me: "Well, these guys are cowards anyway. You're definitely too good for these types of games."
The Terrans are telling me to shut up and quit already. Blue is now supporting the continued assault on me, now that I have no chance of killing him. I leave the game quietly after wishing Good Luck to the Protoss guy in his future battles. I don't know the final outcome of the game, but that's not what this story is about anyway.
