I was able to obs the finals of a pgt ladder tournament not too long ago, in which fk.kakarotto faced off against sw)cancel. You probably know something of kakarotto, but in case you don't I'll try to give you a little information on both.
Sw)caNcel is a good sc player, and a very entertaining person. Very amusing and very good manner. Wonderful player to be around.
Fk.kakarotto is probably one of the best players I have seen. In a recent Pro Gaming Tour poll he was voted the best player in their ranks, a high honor indeed. Not only is he highly skilled, he is also very good manner, a rare combination.
This game was played on, everybody say it with me, Lost Temple. Both players went random, with kakarotto drawing red protoss at 3:00 and cancel drawing teal zerg at 9:00. Kakarotto went with a double gate late gas and scouted counter-clockwise, while cancel scouted 6:00 with his overlord and 9 pooled with gas followed by a clockwise drone scout. Kakarotto moved his probe into cancel's natural beside the geyser after scouting the main. Cancel morphed an extractor on Kakarotto's geyser after scouting his base. Kakarotto produces 2 zealots and uses them to block off his ramp, while 3 probes attempt to remove the extractor. Cancel sends his 6 zerglings to Kakarotto's main then attempts to scale the ramp, he retreats after 3 of them fall to psi blades.
Kakarotto now warps in a forge behind his gates and a pylon along his cliff, near his ramp. Cancel sends his 8 lings to his natural and builds a hatchery there, which kakarotto's probe is able to see before being viciously ripped apart by zergling claws. Kakarotto has warped in a cannon by his ramp and scoots a probe out to take his natural. Cancel's overlord left in kakarotto's natural sees this and 12 lings quickly (or actually not so quickly) bound across the map towards the base. The lings are greeted by the fire of the cannon from above and 6 psi blades on the ground...and retreat to they're natural. Cancel now begins a lair at his main while Kakarotto finally destroys the extractor and begins an assimilator and core in his main and a cannon at his natural.
Cancel's lair finishes and he begins a spire at his main, going for the typical muta-ling. Kakarotto's nexus is done at his natural so he maynards a control group of probes there. Kakarotto currently has a defense consisting of 4 zealots and 2 cannons and cancel controls 10 zerglings ready to see some action. The poor lings have to wait because cancel is more concerned with getting an extractor and sunken down at his natural. Kakarotto begins a citadel of adun at his main, typically meaning he's going for templars. As further proof of this templar plan he warps in a third gateway and an assimilator at his natural. Cancel's spire is nearing completion so he morphs two more overlords to give himself ample supply. Kakarotto's citadel finishes and he begins a templar archives as well as a fourth gateway. Cancel begins morphing mutas and sends a ling to Kakarotto's choke to watch for troop movements. Kakarotto sends a probe to 6:00 to check for an expansion and begins warping in two cannons around each nexus.
Cancel sends his mutas to 12:00 in preparation for their attack on Kakarotto's main. A scouting probe travels to 3:00 to check for lurkers and finds nothing but lings. Having amassed 8 mutas, Cancel sends them to assault Kakarotto's probe line, but they retreat from the cannons.
Cancel's forces now come to 6 mutas and 10 lings against Kakarotto's 4 zealots an 8 carefully placed cannons, but Kakarotto didn't put that templar archives to waste, an archon has just been formed out of his first 2 high templar. Cancel again attempts another peon assault after amassing another 8 mutas and sending them to Kakarotto's natural...only to meet with 3 more cannons.
Kakarotto has apparently had enough of being attacked and finally goes on the offensive sending 6 zealots to cancel's recently began mineral only expansion, where 8 mutas and 10 lings awaited and repulsed them. Unphased Kakarotto sends the zealots back in almost immediately, except this time they had 2 archons for support. Cancel happily send out his forces to re-repulse (don't bother looking it up) those pesky zealots, but retreats his troops when he sees the big glowing things slaughtering his lings. He allows Kakarotto to destroy his mineral only but has been researching lurkers and sends out his first 3 to force him to retreat. Cancel now takes back his mineral only and his lurkers do the lurker dance (you know you've seen it, when you don't have detection and they fight you off, they dance).
Kakarotto took his mineral-only after removing Cancel's and now, having seen lurkers he does what all of us protoss players would do, he builds a robotics facility and when it finishes he builds a...stargate? Needless to say I was somewhat confused, observers don't usually come out of stargates, but when the stargate finished my mind was put at ease when he warped in an arbiter tribunal, read that again, yes, i did say an arbiter tribunal. My fellow observers and I were singing the "ooh, ahh" chorus, then Kakarotto warped in another building...but it was just your typical, mundane observatory.
His zerg opponent however didn't hatch yesterday and has been doing some teching himself, specifically he has built a queen's nest and is morphing a hive. After it completes he begins a greater spire and flies his mutas to the far edge of 3:00's natural cliff.
Kakarotto takes 12:00 natural and mineral only and is far ahead now in resources. He produces an observer to escort his troops holding the middle and begins his first arbiter (you didn't think that tribunal was just fluff now did you?).
Cancel's greater spire finishes and all 11 of his mutas at the cliff morph into guardians. After they finish they move up and begin to trash everything in the natural, including at least 20 probes, a nexus, 2 pylons, 5 cannons, and an assimilator...they missed the fully energized high templar, however, and 2 storms held them back long enough for Kakaorotto's first arbiter to come and run them off.
Cancel senses defeat but wants a chance to pull out his trump card, a ultralisk cavern morphs in his main. He knows he will need to buy some time however because his opponent has a rather large force holding the middle ready to pounce. Therefore, he sends his 9 remaining guardians to Kakarotto's main, where they encouter the protoss commander's own little surprise, stasis. 4 guardians are instantly immobile and the other 5 run to 12:00's natural cliff. Cancel sends the bulk of his standing forces (20+ hydras, 30+ lings) to 3:00's mineral only to destroy it, the attack is repulsed, however, and the guardians finally unstasis to the sound of the entire protoss army firing at them.
They had served their purpose, however, and 5 ultralisks popped out of their eggs, followed by 3 more ultras. Unfortunately for Cancel, 8 ultras with ling, hydra, lurker support couldn't stop the protoss force any better than 11 guardians could and he leaves after the bulk of his forces are stasis beside his mineral only.
I would like to thank both players for a great game and allowing me to observe. I would also like to thank everyone who has read this report and will hopefully read any future reports of mine. Thanks for your time and please leave a comment.
