With probably the two most creative players on the progamer scene battling against each other, this game promised to be very entertaining.
Nal_rA (Protoss at 7) scouted 1 first, giving Boxer (Terran at 5) enough time to complete his wall-in (consisting of two supply depots, 1 Barracks and a Factory) before the Protoss scout arrived at his base.
Ra, wearing glasses today, went for the rather unusual 2 gate range without robo build, massing dragoons for early pressure.
Boxer on the other hand opened with the very common 1 factory expansion.
Ra's first dragoon was pushed back easily by 3 marines and 1 tank and he seemed to be content by merely placing goons around Boxer's base, completely shutting him inside and making it impossible for any unit to get out of the containment and scout. Ra, knowing he was safe for the moment, started on his own expansion, got a robo and a citadel for zealot speed.
The game was quite static for some time, the only action comprising of a shuttle of Ra's, floating around Boxer's base but dropping nothing.
Both of these players aren't the ones to sit around and mass however and sure enough, Boxer soon wasn't content with being bottled in by Dragoons anymore. He sieged his tanks, making Ra pull back his Dragoons which made it possible for Boxer to get 5 Vultures through the containment, enabling him to scout at last.
Being afraid of his probes at his natural, Ra pulled all his Dragoons back, ending the containment.
Knowing that Boxer's troops were now further from his main base, Ra dropped 2 Zealots and a Goon and tried to take out a supply depot but failed, because of excellent reaction by Boxer.
Both players took a break from attacking now and were content on macroing for a while. Boxer was now up to 6 factories, 2 with an add-on, while Ra had warped in 5 gateways for his use. Both had also teched some, Boxer having built an early armory for Goliaths and Ra warping in a templar archives at his base.
Ra had also decided to get the mineral only at 9, giving him the economical advantage he desperately needed.
The real action commenced again with Ra's shuttle heading straight towards Boxer's main. It was seen by an e-bay only moments before dropping the two high Templars and the two dark Templars it had loaded, but Boxers reaction time was magnificent. All his scvs fled into safety and the two perfectly placed storms by Ra merely killed one lone scv. Vultures hurtling up the ramp at top speed took care of the dark Templars, one was killed and the other loaded back up alongside with the two high Templars, neither dt having killed an scv. The shuttle still hovered menacingly over the Terran main, but Boxer's armory came into use, as a Goliath managed to chase the shuttle away.
Knowing he had the temporary advantage, Boxer tried to push out, but his tanks weren't spread out enough, resulting in numerous kills for the Protoss Templars. This didn‘t discourage Boxer however, while chasing down high Templars with vultures, he moved his tanks forward. Ra did not move back and the two armies clashed for the first time. Storms flashed blue over the Terran units, but Boxer did an excellent job at dodging his vultures out of them and Ra retreated.
Boxer now moved further into the middle, his army becoming enormous. Ra, trying to push back the threatening Terran push, moved all his units forwards once more. Some beautiful storming took care of many vultures, but Boxer got out on top nevertheless and once again, Ra had to pull his army back.
Meanwhile Boxer had expanded to his mineral only, levelling the number of expansions and income.
Boxer was now in complete control of the lower middle, bottling in all Protoss units coming from Ra’s main.
In response, Ra expanded to 11 and built 2 starports in his main. Boxer, trying to destroy Ra’s expansions at 9 and 11 took half his army off the lower middle and tried to contain the expos, but this proved to be a big mistake, as Ra simply ran over the terran units.
Boxer was still looking strong however as he expoed to 1 o’clock.
Ra took most of his ground forces and obliterated the new terran expansion, but this proved to be a bad move, as Boxer ran over the Protoss natural with minimal resistance. The huge Terran army now headed to 11 o’clock, where Ra had expoed again and all his units were waiting. The third big clash of the game commenced, with Boxer coming out on top for the third time. Ra retreated his carriers but was left with very few ground forces, while Boxer still had numerous tanks and Goliaths, which took apart the Protoss expansions.
Meanwhile however, Ra had killed all the scvs at the 6 mineral only of Boxer’s with some Zealots and was also heading there with his remaining Carriers. All of Boxer’s remaining scvs tried desperately to save the CC, but eventually it was destroyed. Suddenly Boxers economy wasn’t looking that great anymore.
Ra’s Carriers went for the newly taken expo at 1, while microing his ground army furiously against Boxer’s huge number of Goliaths and Tanks. All of the Protoss units were killed eventually, but he had killed a good number of Terran units and Boxer didn’t have any income anymore, as the Carriers had completely obliterated 1 o’clock. The Terran army now moved towards the newly erected base at 11 and destroyed it easily, the last source of minerals for Ra.
The observer showed Ra’s gateways and starports and Boxer’s gateways in turn. Neither were producing...
A pure micro fight would decide the game.
The ending came swiftly. Ra’s carriers were flying over the middle of the map, when they met with Boxer’s troops. Being caught in the open, the Carriers stood no chance and all were destroyed, except for one, making Ra quit the game.
An astoundingly standard game from both sides, but still, a stunning performance by both, exciting until the very last second.
