I was practicing some new strats with terran on 2v2s, but I would always get a good partner and the game would be won before anyone even expd. Finally I decided to 1v1 and after using various titles to try to ensnare people in, such as 1v1 I'm terran and 1v1 are you afraid?, I got someone to join by the name of maelstrom7. Suddenly a bell rang off; I've seen this guy before. He was part of an old league I was in for a short time and If i remembered correctly he got his own set of skills. The match would not be easy ;-).
Omnipresent terran 9:00
vs
Maelstrom7 protoss 12:00
After facing various beatdowns as terran, I came up with the startling conclusion that medics just weren't helping me vs lurkers and dts ;/. Seeing this I came up with a new build order, which I do not claim to be original to the sc community. It involves a depot at 8, rax at 10 and 12, depot at 13, gas at 14, and eventually a factory once the cash comes in. As soon as the factory finishes I start an e-bay and acad and make a few vults for mines, followed by tanks.
My initial scout revealed one gateway and gas, so I was thinking dts. After harassing for a bit my brave scv came upon the braver zealot and ran, dancing around in the 3:00 position and then darting straight back for his base. He died, but a later scout showed he had a robo facility already up! Guesssing a reaver drop, I raced my 8 marines to his base, which were intercepted by a goon and zealot. Knowing he was outnumbered, he played dancing games of his own. Finally I reached his base to see a citadel just warp in. DOH!! I'm a bad guesser of strats ;). Anyways after several skirmishes it came down two two marines vs his probes, so not to be outdone, I ordered my marines to whip out those ballet lessons. Soon a beautiful dance was performed, but alas, a zealot, who hated gay marines, charged at them with the probes, and the two marines were overwhelmed despite their gracefulness.
Back at home I bring now 12 marines to my choke and order a turret there followed by another closer to my choke (the first was placed poorly). My 3 vults then began mining just about everywhere around my peon line as I figured better to lose a few scvs to mines than all of them to dts/templars/reaver. The mines were then reinforced by two turrets and two tanks, providing a solid and sorta cheap defense vs drops. Excess cash began rolling in despite me upgrading armor, stim, and range. An idle scv started construction of a cc at home, following suit to heartcutter and all of his worshippers (I hear they are dedicating a shrine to him and deon ;/).
Well, as you can guess, a shuttle reared it's ugly head, deciding to drop right on top of one of my tanks, placed right by a turret. The turret proceeded to lay waste to the shuttle, but not before it emptied it's cargo. Soon a goon dropped, which caught the eye of a mine and the other tank. One shot and the mine crushed the goon and the high temp that followed, but a dt still remained to be dealt with. In the end I lost a tank, a mine, and a turret to his shuttle, ht, and dt, a total of 275/100 to 500/525. (if you count the mine as 25 mins)
Omnipresent: Thanks for the free kills.
Maelstrom7: you're welcome
Well after that VERY interesting bit of dialogue I queued up two scvs and rallied them to my natural while floating the newly built cc to that spot. I also began a starport while reinforcing my 12 rines with 4 meds. Seeing as how I had 3 useless vultures, I ordered two to patrol the other spots and their naturals while scouting the defenses mael had put up. One of the vults found an already built exp at the 6:00 position, proceeded to kill the probe there, and then work futily on the unwarped pylon and nexus. I sent two more marines their but he reinforced first with two goons and the exp was his.
Mid game:
I got my exp up and running but a templar thought he'd be cool if he stormed my peon line. This served only to remind me that it needed reinforcing so i placed two tanks there and two turrets. My main was getting dry, so I started another cc to float to the top left island. Also, I started ghosts and a sci vessel while ordering up a third barracks and a 2nd starport. Upgrades were rolling in, my infantry were 2/1, and all was happy until mael dropped a reaver next to my tank. I spotted beforehand, killed the banana/slug crossbreed, and repaired the tank while floating my cc up to the top left island. Unfortunately an observer spotted this and later on that poorly timed "you are under attack" informs me that a zealot and a dt are beating down my exp.
I figured that he deserved some beating down too now, so being the smart little moron that I am, I fly a dropship into his cannons alerting him of it. The ghost drops but the goons lay waste to it before it can even attempt to point that little laser. I then drop two tanks below the ridge and kill a few cannons before goons waltz up and crush them.
Alright now I'm mad. 20 marines and 4 meds along with 4 ghosts, 6 valks, and two sci vessels issue forth from my base to start up a fight. Sending the vessels first, I see a squad of goons trying to reinforce, but my marines deal with the threat with ease. Soon a templar is spotted heading for my little band of merry marines (these ones aren't gay, HONEST). For the first time in my life I use emp CORRECTLY (woohoo), so the little foo runs away, my marines right behind him. Mael thinks he's cool and wants to run away with his two shuttles. My ghosts stare him down and he unloads his ht just before I lock them both down and kill it. Hehe. Well I'm feeling like a bad ass now, point a nuke at the cannon, and emp the nexus. BOOM exp no.1 down.
My main is dry, so I make another cc at the second natural, forgetting that my other cc is still hovering merrily at the top left island, plop it down in my 2nd natural, and start mining with no defenses at all. Thanks to comsat, I see another exp attempt at the 3:00 main, with no ht's at all, as well as another at the bottom right island.
What can I say, marines own a single cannon at the choke and a few more at his peon line. Either way, Mael isn't exactly happy and pays me a visit with two carriers.
Two lockdowns later, we have a lot of marines vs two carriers and two temps. Several storms later, we got a really small peon line and not so many marines and ghosts left standing. DOH... Wll at least I won the fight. I still got a big head so I charge up to his main, get zapped by a whole lot of templar, and the find another beatdown squad at my 2nd exp in the form of dts and a reaver. I lose a lot of scvs this time, and only with the help of comsat and lockdown is the force stopped. Now I'm hurting and he's hurting. Talk about spreading the love ;)
Late game:
DISCLAIMER: A whole lot of stuff happened in the late game and I have no clue if I get it all in chronological order or not or if I leave a lot of stuff out.
I try another assault at his main, shoot an emp at the templar stationed there, and then get stormed by it and lose all those marines and ghosts. Now I'm mad, theres nothing I can do, so what do I do? I whip out my super powers and become the great hero, OMNI THE WHINER!!
OMNI THE WHINER: wtf???? I emped that bastard!!!!
Mael: I picked it up with a shuttle.
OMNI THE WHINER: how very gay!! not like emp isn't hard enough to use already!
Anyways, my cc at the top left island suddenly gets smacked by a photon cannon under it and I noticed he built a nexus there. NOOOOO can't let him have cash. What do you know I have a ghost, nuke, and emp. Hmmmmmmm nuff said. I expand to the 6:00 natural, but leave no defenses there at all. All I can say is, YOU try multi tasking terrans late game and see how you feel ;).
My game plan at this time: 5 barracks pumping out rines and ghosts and two starports giving me the occasional sci vessel. I start a nuke silo at my 2nd natural, but more dts and goons smack it down and I'm forced to pull back and save it as well. Also, he starts pulling gay cliff crap on me and storms my poor little peons.. sniff sniff.
I love comsat. Spotting another exp attempt at the 3:00 main, I send another squad of marines and a few vessels to back it up, and bye bye goes that nexus. More comsat shows an exp at his natural for once. Looking back at my main, I notice no marines and 12 ghosts with a nuke. Hmmmmmmm not good indeed. I have no other choice however, as I'm getting almost no cash now and he can't either if I'm to win. Marching my invincible army up to his natural, I encounter two goons, lockdown them in rapid succession, and laugh as concussive fire blows them up (or whatever concussive weapons do). A temp wanders by, thinking it can annihilate my wonder squad, but I retreat and irradiate it. Nuke+emp=dead nexus. Lots of zeals and goons vs 12 ghosts=dead ghosts. GRRRRR.
I'm really angry now, so charging blindly into his main, I find yet another templar heading out to storm me. Clicking frantically as possible, I order my vessel to emp it. The vessel charges up, fires the missile, and hits just as the storm blasts my marines to smithereens.
OMNI THE WHINER: Emp is NOT a good counter to templar. It's too damn slow!!!
Maelstrom7: yep..
Thanking him for that excellent comment, I notice two dts heading out towards my 2nd natural again. Sci vessels and marines reinforce, but he darts them right towards my 6:00 exp and wastes the last few scvs there. My vessels saw the entire slaughter then proceeded to poor radiation all over the assasins, and no matter how skillful you are, it's hard to stop good ol' radiation ;).
OMNI THE WHINER: It's impossible for a terran to multi task like this. How in the world can u defend all your exps and make any decent assaults?
I don't remember exactly what he says but it's something along the lines of "yea terrans are too hard." Grrrrrrr OMNI THE WHINER IS NOT HAVING A GOOD DAY.
At this time he tries yet again to exp at the top left, just as nother nuke pops up. Need I repeat myself? dead nexus. He was still getting a cash flow somehow though and when I scanned his island exp I saw a few patches remaining. Noooooooooooo ;-<.
well I head over with sci vessels and a dropship full of three ghosts, then land them right when he psi storms the dropship, killing the two ghosts that unfortunately landed before I could retreat. I had three vessels though, matrixed, one and sent it on to kill the ht. Another
temp rears it's ugly head and storms my vessels. I then took a gamble. If he had only one temp that stormed he only has two storms left. I dropped the last ghost, matrixed it, then set off the nuke. He only had one storm left, and with emp the nuke finished all but the assimilator and a pylon.
Omnipresent (his normal self): out of resources yet?
Maelstrom7: Just enough for one more exp.
Comsat reveals yet another exp (damn these things pop up too much) at his natural just forming. To safeguard in case things went wrong, I floated the cc at my 6:00 natural to the 6:00 main and started mining there with all my remaining scvs and sent a wonder squad of 12 marines to his exp. Well I am a brilliant strategist and walk right through his cannons so he can see me and storm me. Leaving only one marine left to hit his natural.
Next I'm going to follow suit to the new trend that seems to be on this site. What is that trend you ask? I'm going to name one of my units and pretend I care about them!!! WOOHOO! Well Joe the marine was thoroughly pissed that his frat bros got fried and took it out on the probes mining there. Unfortunately two zealots from the protoss mafia came up and cleaved him in two. Sniff let's all take a moment for.. ah what the hell HES DEAD GET OVER IT ;/!!!!!!
Well the ghosts back home didn't take it too well, popped another nuke, and maelstrom finally said he was out of resources. I checked back at my exp, noticed only three scvs left thanks to a previous storm, and then looked at my bank of 300 or so mins. I was too tired to build up and finish him since he still had a lot of templar left guarding his main. We allied, both agreed it was a good game, and I finally went toe to toe with a decent toss on temple ;).
Lessons learned:
1. Terrans can, unlike what some people say, be played just like the other races. I like to use the following format: Nice versatile unit backed by spellcasters and occasional siege unit. For zerg that's hydras backed by queens/defilers and if needed guardians or ultras. For toss it's goons or carriers backed by templar's/DA's and if needed corsairs. Terrans have the worst time with this though cuz their spellcasters are so hard to use, the marine isn't very versatile compared to the other units due to it's small size and strength, and their siege units, tanks and bcs, are both hard to use due to set-up speed and cost. Tanks take too much baby-sitting and bcs take forever to get yomato and are really expensive. Terrans are overall just harder to use in every way.
2. Terrans should play passive/agressive. I was playing great until I started attacking his main, and If i just hit his exps while defending my own adaquately, I coulda won much more easily. My nature, however, is to be aggressive, and it always sets me back with terran.
3. Nukes are how to beat a toss, plain and simple. I took out so many nexii with nukes and I won because of it. Now that I'm finally getting better with ghosts I feel more confident in battling late game vs toss.
4. I mentioned valks only once, cuz they were only useful once. Make these guys on islands but not on land. Instead turn to bcs or wraiths, depending on your preference.
5. Upgrade your infantry. Marines do so much better vs cannons with weapon and armor upgrades and they fight goons a lot better too. In the end i was 3/2 to his 2/1 and it really helped.
Final note: if there's people out there who like ballet, I'm fine with that ;0. so don't flame me on it ;).
Ok this is final note: I wish I were watching this game instead of playing it. There's a lot of stuff I missed out on, and of course, no pix ;-<. Well, hope you enjoyed.
