Okay. A little introduction. This was my first
Brood War ladder game, and I was just removed
from a brutal 6-16 season on regular SC (but hey,
I started 0-12 and rallied!) So looking to gingerly
test the waters, I look for an unassuming game. I
see: "1v1 ladder newbies only"

This either means 2 things:

1) It's a player who going to 6 pool you.
2) It's X'Ds~Grrr... in disguise just so he can
have some cheap laughs owning you while trying out
his ultralisk rush.

I was really hoping for option #1. :)

My fearless opponent selects Zerg, and I figured my
odds at winning just went up dramatically.

I was psyched. Not only because I had a real good
idea what was coming, but I was blue. Blue zerg
just owns.

But surely, you ask, why would anyone try to 6pool
on Ashrigo??

Ah, gentle reader, truly you do not understand the
intelligence level of bnet sometimes.

I send my OL scouting off to the right, and proceed
with a 10/9 hatch. Being brave, I put the hatch
at my natural. It must be my day because I'm
smoothly clicking on everything. Then again, I did
tell you that blue zerg owns.

I see his sickly OL lumber in from the south -- by
this point my hatch/pool/overlord had just morphed.
I place the overlord across the ridge. Gotta look
out for those punk zerglings, after all. Sure
enough, not a second too late, 6 of them come
scampering in...

...which proceed to tear into my expansion, with
a sunken building. My intitial 6 zerglings come
racing down the ramp with one thought:

"Bitch, that be our creep!"

He does manage to level the sunken, before my lings
and a drone or two eat them for breakfast.

Big deal. I throw up 3 sunkens, hatch 6 more zerglings,
have started an extractor, and begin a hydra den.

My initial scouting overlord finally lumbers over
to his base, and what do I find?

A hatchery, maybe 9 drones mining, and a spawning
pool.

Meanwhile my other overlord on the ridge is watching
with amusement as 24 zerglings are gathering outside
my base. I can almost see him smirking as he thinks
this "overwhelming" attack force is just going to
rip through my natural and finish the game.

Alas, for he does not worship the altar of Micromanagement.

Me, having already known I have more than enough defense
to hold off any attack, only had 6 zerglings, instead
evolving double lairs so I could drop his sorry ass.
Hydras were pooling at my main base underneath a few
overlords -- by that point I'd thrown up a 2nd hatch
at my main. It helped that I'd gone to town on my
drones.

To make a short story even shorter.. he brought his
lings against my sunkens.. which burped. Mmmm, tasty
lings. He, naturally, attacks the sunkens. I, naturally
attack the zerglings. After his 24 lings stain my
creep without inflicting one casualty, he realizes
he's screwed and leaves. (I'll give him credit, he
didnt disconnect)

Lessons illustrated here:

1) an early expansion to your natural (IF you can hold
it) rocks. Obviously this depends on scouting
and whatnot. Once I had that expansion, I had
already won.
2) Dont attack the sunkens, dammit!
3) a few zerglings and a couple of sunkens can hold
off a scary amount of things.
4) You always see something new every day. A zergling
rush on Ashrigo??
5) If you're gonna rush, do it right. Maybe if he
keeps bringing his lings up right away, it keeps
me distracted and busy. Instead, he waited for 24
zerglings, which let me get 3 sunkens. He could
have rushed 6 more in while I was rebuilding.
(I was ready to move drones down in this case to
protect the building colonies)
6) Thank god it wasn't X'Ds~Grrr... :P
7) Now that I'm 1-0, I may never play again...

No pictures. I played this game sometime last week
before I knew about this site. Yeah I know, it was
a easy win, but hey I'll take what I can get. :)
