expostfacto: Protoss

liquid:x: Protoss

Map: The Lost Temple ( I would include a picture but I think we all know what it looks like by now :) )

Both players chose the forces of Aiur to command. expostfacto warped in at the 3:00 position, while his opponent liquid:x began at 9:00.

Both players warped in a pylon with their 8th probes. They chose different battle plans, with expostfacto making two Gateways, then an Assimilator and a Cybernetics Core. He was pushing for a mass goons + reaver strategy, which is very effective in Toss vs. Toss games. liquid:x opted to tech early, building a single Gateway followed by a Cybernetics Core, an Assimilator, a Forge, and a 2nd Gateway.

expostfacto sent out a squad of 4 zealots and 6 goons to say hello to liquid:x. liquid:x was well prepared for this token force, defending with 1 zealot, 3 cannons, 2 goons and a Shield Battery at the top of his ramp. Seeing his opponent's defense, expostfacto decided to retreat, and 3 zealots and 4 goons walked away with their lives.

During this small skirmish, expostfacto expanded to his natural, and both players began warping a Robotics Facility at nearly the exact same time. expostfacto then began a Robotics Support Bay, while liquid:x made a Stargate, a Citadel of Adun, an Observatory, and a Robotics Support Bay in quick succession at the southern end of his base, then expanded to his natural.

At this point, expostfacto began a second Robotics Facility and an Observatory, and set the task of amassing a large goon/reaver army as his top priority. liquid:x concentrated more on climbing the tech tree, as he expanded to his natural and warped in a Templar Archives. After a shuttle flew out of liquid:x's Robotics Facility, several probes were flown to the upper left island and a 2nd expansion was started. A blue corsair nearly destroyed one of expostfacto's shuttles, but 6 goons were quickly called in to eliminate the offender just in time. The shuttle survived with about 28 hp.

Then expostfacto, perhaps to retaliate for the affront on his poor shuttle, decided to strike the killing blow. 20 goons and several zealots march in through the front door, quickly razing liquid:x's natural expansion. Reavers were flown in to assist in the attack. liquid:x's own army of goons and reavers bravely stood their ground, but to no avail.

As the battle ensued, expostfacto expanded to the 12:00 start position, while liquid:x began another base at 6:00. Unfortunately, it would not last long. A triple reaver drop destroyed liquid:x's upper left island base, and the purple Protoss army razed the 6:00 base. "gg"s were exchanged as expostfacto emerged as the victor.

Lessons learned:

1) Goon/reaver does work great in Toss vs. Toss.

2) Writing a battle report is not as easy as I thought!

3) Perhaps if the game had gone on longer, and liquid:x had been able to get some of the higher tech units he was aiming for, like templar and more corsairs, the outcome would have been different? One can only speculate.

That's about it... expostfacto and liquid:x both played great; thanks for letting me observe. This was my first report, so constructive criticism is greatly appreciated!
