INTRODUCTION

I played many good games this weekend. I played two ladder games but they would not make good battle reports. One was protoss vrs protoss which I lost to dark templar. I forgot to make detection and the game ended with my probes and dragoons and a reaver killing his base while his dark templar killed mine. Dark templar at his base ensured his victory… The other ladder game was on Dire Straits, and was entirely one sided. My corsair so crippled my zerg opponent he was forced to make creep colonies of his drones to free up enough supply to get some hydras to chase away the corsair. Then he cancelled the creep colonies. A good move, but unfortunately a bit too slow as my reaver drop cleared his hydras and drones.

In another game I really liked I got to play against my hero Whoop. Ever since reading about him from his battle reports and other’s reports, I’ve tried to play like him. It was a very exciting game; I got to play with orcmaniac on my team and Tmac was on the other side. I wish I remembered enough details about that game to write a proper report, but it was too fast paced. The game I will tell you about was another 2v2 game. I was with my partner 1_BadMamaJama against Bob_The_Newt and Fractal_Wave.

The map was:

Lost Temple

LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE!

I started in the right position as protoss. BMJ picked terran and got the bottom. Bob was in the top and got zerg and Fractal also got zerg and the left. I did a standard 2v2 build order for quick zealots. Both BMJ and I got scouted with overlords around the time our tenth worker was produced. The overlord near my base set up camp, and got to see a full view of my build order which went like this:

8: Pylon
12: 2 Gateways
14:Pylon
15: 2 zealots
20: Pylon/2 zealots

I asked BMJ for the lone of his very first marine and he complied. His soldier double timed over to my base with a gleam in his eye familiar with bird hunters the world over. He was going to get a shot at a floating overlord. I had six zealots scattered in a loose formation in the front part of my base. BMJ’s marine was happily pumping rounds into the overlord as it’s bloated frame fled across the sky. Then a lone zergling from Bob dodged and wove it’s way between my zealots, lept on the marine and tore it to pieces. I was in shock. No one had ever done that to me before! The message could not have been more clear if Bob had bitch slapped me and called me a punk. I wasn’t getting any respect at all this game. He had proved my allies troops weren’t safe even in the middle of my base. Well, I did get one tiny little bit of respect. At least he didn’t send the overlord back in… and I killed the zergling.

Due to my low gas production in early game I chose to go with a forge first, then a core, citadel of Adun, and a templar archives. This let me throw up four cannons in mutually supporting positions in my base, close enough that they couldn’t be attacked by mutas without coming under fire from the other cannons. An interesting note is that I made a pylon in BMJ’s base, and this is where I produced my forge too. I told BMJ that he did not have to worry about static detection and erected another pylon and three cannons in his base. If all this seems like it took a while to do it did. I was making zealots constantly through the process and just building up my forces. BMJ was doing the same. I got a little antsy and sent a zealot to scout out Bob’s base. Just as it entered the ramp my doorbell rang and the pizza I ordered was delivered. I paused the game and paid for the pizza, then started eating it as we resumed play. I only mention the pizza episode as Fractal and Bob both later claimed this “threw our game off.”

LET’S SEE SOME BLOOD

My intrepid zealot scout found that Bob had gone with a mass zergling strategy. BMJ’s quick scan of Fractal revealed more of the same. I checked my +1 weapons upgrade and saw it had a few seconds to go. Knowing I would be in a tight spot if they came in, I morphed my first two templar into an archon. It wasn’t me they wanted a piece of though. BMJ had eight marines and four medics at his choke. He was attacked by what I can only describe as a “horde” of zerglings. He stimmed a they came running in his ramp. The first few vaporized without doing much damage. Then they started hitting the bunched marines. First one fell and then another, five to ten zerglings dead for each marine. Then a firebat charged in and added his flames to the party. The zerglings would get deep fried as they ran by because the firebat was perfectly positioned to sweep the whole ramp from the side. Over fifty zerglings perished on the ramp that attack, which led Fractal to say “That didn’t work to well.”

BMJ had assured me he was okay from the attack. I watched the zergling slaughter in disbelief, then expanded to my natural. I was up to five gates in my main by now. The pizza was tasting good =]. BMJ suggested that neither had air defense and a little corsair action might do well. As my stargate warped in I was attacked by eight zerglings and six hydras. So much for the corsair idea. I didn’t bother to make one, and my zealots quickly dealt with the incursion. Once again though, BMJ was the main focus of our enemies. He had a small force of marines and firebats at his choke with a turret to provide detection. BMJ has also expanded, floating a command center to the right bottom island. In came a dozen zerglings, mainly to provide detection, and six lurkers, all from Bob The troops quickly went down in a spray of blood and the lurkers moved into the main part of his base. Fractal chose this moment to drop on the back side of BMJ’s base. When I asked if he needed help this time, he quickly said he might need a little.

Well, I had the solution to his lurker problems. I took four dragoons and two archons along with two templar to BMJ’s base. I knew if we just took attacks from the enemy we would eventually just be run over. With a lot of troops at BMJ’s base, I was betting Bob was lightly defended. I ordered 20 zealots with the speed upgrade and eight dragoons to patrol into Bob’s base as I managed the counterattack on BMJ’s base. The lurkers hadn’t been able to get close to the SCV line because of my three cannons. They were out in front hammering on random buildings. I sent in a dragoon first to get a good lock on the positions. I took out five lurkers using three storms with my careful spotting. The remaining lurker stubbornly hammered on an academy as my troops recharged their energy. I glanced over at Bob’s base and saw a sight to gladden my heart. All of his sunkens were dead, his drones were dead or fleeing, and he had just hatched six drones which my zealots were laying into as they tried to run to his natural. Both battles wound down as a lurker kept hammering on my zealots in Bob’s base as they tried to dismantle it. BMJ used a comsat and siege tank to clear the final lurker from his base. Fractal sent in some mutas to attack my zealots in Bob’s base, so I withdrew them back to my natural. The number of gates in my main had risen to eight. I was constantly producing troops from all gateways and upgrading from two forges.

OFFENSIVE POWER

As we all sat back and took a quick breather I realized my main was about to run out of minerals. I sent my troops to the middle of the map and established a nexus at my mineral natural. I had eleven templar and over two control groups of dragoons, along with an archon and a few zealots. I made one corsair and used it to secure the upper left island, killing an overlord. Bob realized if I had the center of the map it was going to let me dictate the tempo of the game. He sent out two control groups of hydras to contest the middle of the map. Eleven templar with the energy upgrade can cast 33 storms. Just thought I’d mention that. I lost maybe one dragoon to his losses of a control group or so before he ran away his troops, abusing storm all the way. I decided I wouldn’t need more than 15 storms and made 3 archons. Fractal tried to hit me from behind at that time and a few more storms let my dragoons mop the floor with him.

BMJ was tired of being used as punching bag at this point. He dropped two tanks, six marines and two medics on Fractal while he was distracted, and bought himself about double the amount he spent in zerg troops. A few more shallow graves to stick the label of “They died cost effectively” on. I noticed that Bob had taken the mineral natural of the top start. With my troops in between his mineral base and any reinforcements, I sent in twelve of my dragoons and eradicated the base. BMJ took this opportunity to drop tanks on the ledge above Bob’s natural. With this guaranteeing that Bob would be occupied, I sent my two control group of dragoons and archons along with templar support into Fractal’s natural mineral expansion. But Bob had taken that resource node too! As I did this BMJ told me to look at Bob’s natural expansion. What site should greet my eyes but two defense matrixed, irradiated science vessels patrolling back and forth over Bob’s drones! This brought a smile to my face, but Bob was not quite as amused. With a muttered comment about “Damn AQD3 and his pauses” he surrendered the field of combat.

THE END OF THE SLAUGHTER

My offensive had stalled due to the three sunkens on the cliff and the four more at Fractal’s natural. I kept sending in troops, mostly dragoons and templar, as fast as eight gateways would make them. I slowly wore away the defenses and killed the sunkens one by one, getting my dragoons harassed by cracklings the entire time. Finally, I realized that dragoons were not being cost effective against cracklings and switched to zealots. Fractal took the opportunity to morph a few more sunkens as I regrouped, but a control group of random ground forces, mostly zealots was outside his base before they were done. BMJ laid a defensive matrix on eight of the zealots and they charged in. I dropped a nice storm on eight or so cracklings and watched my troops clear the base.

Fractal then shared vision and admitted defeat. BMJ and I cleared the rest of his base with an assortment of zealots, dragoons, and marines. A very well played game by our opponents. And BMJ, you’re a sick man when you get your hands on science vessels.

Thank you for reading my report. Please comment on the tactics of all the players involved. Thanks again.
