I was just looking through my old files and I came across an email that contained an old battle report. This one is from way back in 1.02 when I was sort of a newbie. I played a lot of ffa so I had really bad macro skills because my main strategies all involved surviving until everyone else ran out of money, then slowly killing them with various siege units and spellcasters. According to starladder my average game time was well over an hour, this game brought it up a little higher:

The Most Embarrasing Game Ever

Here is that tale of the most embarassing game ever. I still have no idea why I lost. It was ladder ffa on temple. I was at the top and was terran. I made a depot then barracks. Then I made a depot and bunker at the bottom of the ramp. I was going for a long game to control the map so I expanded to my near expansion which was guarded by the bunker and depot. I got the academy, factory, and engineering bay up quickly. [I only made one barracks, I didn't want to waste my precious money on buildings because I wanted to have 5000+ saved up when the map was empty. Looking back I realize how foolish this was but amazingly I did ok and won about half of my ffa games] I got two comsats when my academy finished and I got a tank up on my
ledge. Before this a player dropped and another quit (zealot rushed?). [actually there was no fourth player in the game ever]

It was just me vs the protoss. I got my starport really fast (before I got the tank) and so I sent a dropship to take both islands. By now I had done a lot of comsating. He was at bottom and had
expanded to the right side start location. He also had his close expansion. He was going for carriers. I have no respect whatsoever for carriers so I started laughing. I thought that with my three expansions and his carriers it would be an easy win. [keep in mind this was back in 1.02 so carriers truely proved newbiehood] I focused on building
turrets, ghosts, science vessels and bc. He kept attacking and suffering unnatural defeats. I laughed whenever he would send his foolish carriers to die. That is when I noticed that he wasn't making reavers! He never made a reaver at any point in the whole game! [back then I opened every game with a reaver drop if I was toss, especially great in ffa which was all I played] That made me laugh more. Between carrier onslaughts I found time to make a
few drops. He had large gaps in his defenses where I could hit him. They did damage but were insignificant when compared to the rest of the game.

He surprised me by taking out my bottom right island expansion. Then he went for the top left. The turrets and four marines held him until
I brought in four wraiths. He didn't have any observers so his six carriers died very quickly. He was starting to force me into a turtle.
I should have stayed agressive but I didn't. At this point I had my main base, my close expansion, and the island. I soon lost the island to a continous stream of carriers. [he had 8 stargates, I had 1 barracks, 1 factory, and 2 starports]

Then I noticed the cannons. I laughed, again. He just covered the
middle of the map with pylons and photon cannons. They weren't
guarding anything. Now I was really convinced that victory was assured. I
decided to clean up the middle with a siege marine combo. I was doing
well and pushing him back when eight or so carriers came. I easily killed them but lost at least twenty marines. I decided to modify my attack into a siege turret. It was my base vs the cancerous plague of cannons. I built a factory down there to speed it up. I was doing well
and pushed him back about a screen but there were always more! Zealots with templar and dragoon support pushed me back. In about ten minutes (this game was pretty long) I was back at my base. Twice he sent
about eight carriers to wear me down. Then he sent in zealots to take my close expansion.
[after I wrote the original report I went and checked the point totals. I had 41 razings, one nexus and the rest were pylons or cannons from his cannon cancer, that's right he really cannoned in the middle area]

Now it was just me in turtled up in my base with him on the outside. He sent wave after wave of assorted units at me. There was very little strategy but very many units. He messed up my ramp pretty badly. I
put some spider mines down to give me some time to rebuild. [like 3-5] I had no income at this point so I made two firebats to hold the ramp. I put marines behind them and then worked on my base. I got a double row of turrets and mixed in tanks to keep ground units at bay. The only other units that I had were a bc and half a dozen science vessels. I might have also had a few ghosts and a vulture or two. Then came the archons, I laughed. Archons vs EMP? This guy must be really bad. He knew that I depended on science vessels and was using EMP. I was wrong. EMPs can only hit 4-6 archons at a time and I only had 4 EMPs worth of mana. [keep in mind that I was defending my ramp and this is back when archons couldn't walk right] His archon swarm was infinent. I eventually threw it off. He sent a wave of carriers to keep me busy until another infernal swarm of archons came. Their splash takes down science vessels fast. Some of you may be thinking that some of these units must have been hallucinations. None of them were. All of these carriers and archons were real. Luckily he barely upgraded his units.

After his second archon attack my base was in ruins and I was low on money. These archons had one weakness, cloaking! I started pumping ghosts from four barracks. [oh I guess I had four] I didn't have the money to make wraiths so the starports became walls. To hold him off I floated both of my starports
over to block the ramp. Then about twenty zealots came. The starports held them out while the ghosts killed them. Then the archons came, again. [you have no idea how scary these hordes were] They tore into my base and I quit. I looked at the stats and saw that I had killed almost 700 units! [accutally it was 598, I checked later] I was pretty impressed that I had killed so many and yet still lost in the end. Then I became amazed. Those
weren't just any units. Many of them were carriers or archons. Looking back I realize that I must have killed at least 100 archons and at least 200 carriers. What else could they be? He never once made a reaver
and
only made a few observers. He only made a few shuttles. I did kill a lot of probes but it could not be more than 100. He also made about two dozen scouts. My guess is that I killed 200 carriers, 100 archons, 200 zealots, and 200 assorted other units. I killed so many units and
still lost! I don't even know why I lost. I knew to counter his archons with EMP. He just made so many archons that my efforts were meaningless. I would understand the loss if it was to a good player but it wasn't. Remember how I said that he left large gaps in his defenses and that he made few observers? At one point I attacked the mineral expansion that was next to the right start location. I sent in four wraiths and went to kill some probes. I killed a few and then he fought back, WITH PSI
STORM! I laughed and took my barely hurt wraiths home. He killed his own probes AND the templar. Well that is the most amazing game that I have ever played. Unlike most battle reports this one does not have a happy ending.
