After some spamming in x17 and then Nohunters, I found Mark4 willing to try out an original Johnny_Vegas strat on someone 1v1. Headless_Clown rose to the challenge and I made the game after a small problem of some stupid smurf taking my traditional game name. The map was Dire Straits and Mark4 chose Terran and started in the upper left while Headless_Clown randomed to Protoss in the lower right side of the map.
Mark4 started off with a Supply Depot, Refinery, Barracks, Depot, 3 Factories and an Armory. Headless warped in a Pylon, followed by an Assimilator, Gateway, Cybernetics Core, a second Pylon, and a Stargate. Mark4 started pumping Goliaths from his three Factories and upgrading armor. We will see if Johnny's new "Goliath Thunder" will work. Headless starts producing Corsair and then Shuttles from a new Robotics Facility in preparation for expansion and drops.
Mark4 floats his Barracks to the bottom left then to Headless_Clown's main at the bottom right. It lands undetected but is forced to lift off and run after a Zealot finds and kills the first marine made. 2 Corsiar chase it to one of the middle islands where it lands, damaged, but not burning. Headless makes the first drop, as Mark4 chose to power Goliaths before constructing his Starport. A Dragoon and 2 Zealots are dropped on the edge of the Terran island, killing a Goliath upon deployment. Mark4 rallies his 6 or so Goliaths and dances them around the Zealots, killing them and then finishing off the Dragoon. Only 3 Goliath casualties were taken during the drop.
Headless sees Mark4's still not completed starport, and uses his early mobility to expand to the bottom middle island base. A few cannons are set up as defense and probes begin to mine. Mark4 also starts an expansion, but not at an island. Instead he makes a Command Center in his main and floats it down to the mid left island. Goliaths are dropped there for defense. Mark4 has gotten an academy and adds onto his two Command Centers. He is now pumping Goliaths and Dropships.
Headless_Clown makes another drop on Mark4's main. This one of 3 Shuttles is escorted by a couple Corsair. But this drop is ill fated as the shuttles run right over 6 of the many Goliaths patrolling the edges of Mark4's island. Two shuttles are shot down before they can unload, but the third drops its two Dragoons. The Dragoons fight but are overwhelmed by the Goliaths, which are now 1/1/1. After this loss, Headless expands his empire once again, this time to the mid right island. I would have expect another expansion attempt to be postponed until his first was fully producing, but his third Nexus was started when only 6 Probes were mining minerals at his first expansion.
Mark4 loads up 5 ships of Metal and sets in a course for Headless' first expansion. The Goliaths land, and with the help of an odd Vulture or two, take down the cannons and Nexus. But Headless makes his own move by dropping three Dragoons and two Zealots at Mark4's now almost undefended expansion. The 4 Goliath Garrison fails to repel the invaders and Mark4 is forced to lift off his Command Center and fly it out of harm's way. But to make up for this, a second CC which was constructed in his main flies to the left double island and starts producing SCVs.
With Headless' first expansion destroyed, Mark4 continues his campaign and lands the Task force at Headless' main base. The Goliaths meet little resistance - only a few Dragoons and Cannons - and raze the base. A newly made Reaver manages to kill a couple of the Goliaths but it is not enough to turn the tides of the battle in his favor. Headless_Clown is down to his last island - the mid right - but decides that fighting the Goliath Thunder would be futile, and concedes with a good sported "Fuck this." Hehe just pullin your strings there.
Ye Olde Lessons Section
- I think that "Goliath Thunder" is a pretty good, origional strategy. But there were a few flaws I noticed. One thing was the lack of detection. Mark4 did have a Science Facility, but never made any Vessels. His only form of detection was his two Comsats. Turbo observers and Corsairs could take down his dropships en-route, and DT could have done a lot of damage to Mark4's main.
- A Hydra/Ling drop could also be damaging to this Strategy because of the lack of Tanks.
- I think that Headless should have defended his islands more efficiently, and stuck to a main strategy. First he went Corsairs then to Shuttles. A much more effective move would have been observer patrol and Corsair containment.
- I didn't really want to report this, but Mark4 made me.
