Chapter 1

On a small junlge planet, in some no-name sector of the galaxy, there lie a seemingly peaceful ruined temple. It was a truely ancient structure, being nearly a thousand years of age. All around there was a feeling of peace and tranquility... But looks can be very decieving indeed.
In the jungle near the temple a small force of terran infantry patrolled. The small group consisted of a pair of regular enlisted marines in their armour, as well as another conscript who was wearing a high powered firebat assault suit. Accompanying this small force was a medic. It was nothing but a typical terran patroll.
There was a general feeling of nervousness among this small group, and it was at leaste partly justified. There had been many recent sitings of protoss and zerg forces in the area, and a patroll had dissapeared earlier in the day in the region of the temple.
All of the members of the group were jumpy, and the three warriors all had their safties off, and were constantly glancing around. An unfortunate bengalaas had already wandered across their path and had ended up splattered on a nearbye tree.
As they approached the actual temple the troups became even more nervous. Soon they found frantic footprints, obviously made by the boots of a marine assault suit, heading into the temple itself.
This immediately caught the attention of the young, energetic lieutenant by the name of Nathan Stafford, who headed the patroll. He was slight of build, and had deep set, intelligent green eyes, and dark brown hair. He had a confident stride, and when he turned to adress the other members of the patroll, his voice was full of self-confidence. He began to speak, "This could be a sign of the missing patroll, if we are able to find them we could all be up for a promotion!"
The second marine was a little less confident, "Yes, it could be... But look at those tracks, he was obviously running for his life, and where is the rest of the patroll? They could be dead, and whatever was chasing them, and possibally killed them, could still be in that temple."
"Yeah, but I'm in command here, so we are going in," responded Nathan.
"He has a good point Nathan," interjected the firebat, Josh Caldwell, who was a lifelong friend of the lieutenant.
"Then be prepared for a fight then, damnit. We are going in." With that he turned and began walking towards the temple, and the rest of the group grudgingly followed.
Soon they found what appeared to be a small trail of blood, and they began following it. After about a minute they found a truely grisly site, the body, or what was left of it, of a marine. It had been completely cut in half, and several of the native scavengers had obviously gone to work on it.
The marine who had objected entering the temple now spoke up, "Lets just get out of here and report this to the commander, and fas..."
He never finished the sentance, because his body was neatly cut in half. The other members of the group jumped back in shock, and looked for the attacker. There was a slight shimmer in the air and footprints mysteriously appeared.
"RUN!" screamed the firebat, and they all immediately began to bolt for the door. The medic, whose armour was not designed for speed, began to fall behind.
"HURRY!" Nathan screamed back at her, only to see her legs cut out from under her. The look in her eyes was terribal, just before her head was neatly sliced off.
"Oh my god! Josh, use your stimpack, NOW!" screaded Nathan as he depressed the small button. He felt the drugs flow through him, and he immediately began to run much faster than he had been.
He ran for what seemed like hours, although it had, in fact, been a matter of minutes. He entered a large pass in between to large plateaus, the smaller of which contained the ruins of an ancient temple, much like the one he was fleeing. The other had a huge ramp blasted into one of its sides. On top of the ramp their lie a pair of bunkers, to either side, as well as several missile turrets, and a few scattered siege tanks. There was a constant flow of men going from the top of the plateau to the command center situated near a deposite of vespian gas and minerals at one end of the canyon. Workers in their space construction vehicles swarmed to and from the mineral patches and the nearbye refinery, carrying minerals and gas to and from their sources to the huge command center nearbye. Nathan turned to exclaim to Josh that they had made it, only to find he was alone. "NOOO!" came his anguished cry, and it immediately got the attention of another patroll coming in from its rounds. Exahusted, and his suit pushed to its limits by his flight, he collapsed. Shortly after everything went black and he fell into unconsiousness.
