By popular demand (and I still don't want to study for finals =), here is the next part of Phoenix Legion Chronicles: Ashrigo. For those of you just tuning in, you can easily find the first part in the 'other' section of the reports.

----------------------------------------------------------

The Protoss commander was not nearly as agreeable as hoped. His large visage covered the main view screen, the operations center of his Nexus looking impressive even represented in holo. "And why should powerful Protoss forces deign to share such valuable real estate with inferior Terrans?" Not exactly the friendly partnership I was hoping for.

"Because, under-Executor Nezalis, Legion forces are also strongly established here, and we share interests. Together, we can eliminate Kerrigan's forces and the Fourrier pirates. You can be assured that the Legion is honorable and holds no hostility towards the noble Protoss. In case you are not aware, we are not under the thumb of Mengsk." Marines were currently massing, waiting for the attack order.

"The Protoss will deign to help you in an attack against the Zerg, possibly to be continued against the Fourrier forces. Ultimately, however, I do not think the Protoss could countenance such a proximity of a clearly inferior and barbaric race." Was that a sneer? You can't really tell with a Protoss.

I continued. It would be a shame to have to kill even such arrogant warriors. "I ask you to consider the case of James Raynor, friends to both your honourable High Templar Tassadar, and Praetor Fenix. I have authorization to offer you a standing deal to co-occupy the moon, as long as your forces remain viable on the field."

"James Raynor was a freak. An honourable and stalwart member of what is otherwise an abomination. Meet my warriors at the ramp to the Zerg's valley, if your troops have the stomach to face them. We can cooperate on that much at least." Damn. it wasn't going to go well at all.

"Get Sheryl on." I waited a second as the construction and mining officer contacted the lead SCV. "Sheryl, I want you to start a bunker right away, this one in an appropriate place to guard an expansion into the valley. Also, get someone to build another supply depot and an academy when the money rolls in."

I punched the button for control group seven. "Spike, get out of that bunker and find someone else to take your place, I want you to grab eleven marines and head out to the ridge overlooking the Zerg's valley. You should meet some relatively friendly zealots there."

"Roger. You got enough backup at home?"

"Your bunker, and one back at home base, both full." I motioned to the supply officer. "Get me Legion headquarters. Tell them I'm going to need those supplies soon. And definitely more personnel. And when they ask, tell them yes, we're paying."

Two thuds landed softly outside the Command Center. Battlefield supplies always made me nervous. Not taking time to lower the dropship out or orbit, they just sent the package in screaming, with a parachute to slow it down. It amazes me that they can still drop it right next to a depot or Command Center. "And Derrick, tell them thanks for getting a route set up already." I was worried that whatever arms company was supplying the Fourriers would discover the system, if the secret wasn't totally blown yet. Still, without a tug, the Fourriers must have a few dropships that had carried personnel. Hopefully that would keep them supplied, without someone else getting involved in this.

The head infantry tactical officer motioned, I nodded and he spoke: "Spike's on sir."

"Put it through."

"Sir, just after we got here, the zealots showed up. There's seven of them, and they're rarin' to go." I put the action up on the main screen.

"Very good Spike. Motion that you'll follow them in, stay behind the Zealots, but don't hesitate to shoot any bugs there. Hate to have that Protoss commander think we're cowards, but they are the melee attackers." Not to mention I'd rather have the Protoss take the casualties.

"Just what I was thinking, sir. Here we go." The zealots, after mulling about for a bit, went down the ramp in a line. After a few seconds of rearranging themselves in the valley, they headed in, closely followed by my marines. The first thing they found was four zerglings, all of which died almost instantaneously to a few hits from the blades of the Protoss and several rounds from my marines. Advancing forward, the combined forces found a good prize indeed. The over-extended Zerg commander had already created another hatchery at his close resource center! Grinning, my marines followed the zealots, and were directed by Spike to pump rounds into the breathing structure. Still membranous, since the thing had not yet been finished, the zealot's blades ripped gushing holes in the blight, and several tattered areas were quickly losing stability under the fire of my marines. Suddenly, the structure collapsed in upon itself, and a small drone was reformed, with wasted goo fouling the landscape. Three zealots stepped into the goo, and killed the drone.

At the same time, four zerglings sallied out of the main plateau, and attacked my marines, who were strung out in a firing line. Two of the marines were killed before the last ling pulled back. The zealots followed the ling up the ramp, and my boys quickly followed them. My marines found yet another hatchery, and proceeded to rip into it's hide. This one didn't die quite as easily, it's exterior already having been formed. But the zealots tore into it with a vengeance, and my marines thought nothing of ammo, as they struggled to bring the hatchery down. Not so much as a ling got in the way, and it finally fell. Our forces advanced forward, and we found out why the Zerg commander had not tried to defend his hatchery, and was so late in canceling the other. Four sunkens finished morphing just as the zealots got in range, and six zerglings joined three already waiting, and advanced to join the attack. The zealots shields shimmered and took damage, the warriors advancing anyway. My marines gunned down the zerglings, but the Protoss had lost two zealots already, and had just gotten to the sunken colonies.

A secondary alarm went off, and I snatched my attention away from the battle. The exploration officer spoke up, and the main screen shifted quickly. "Sir, our exploring SCV has just been killed by a large force from Fourrier, at least eight marines and four firebats. They're headed south, towards your present position."

It was going so well too. The Protoss were down to three zealots, though one sunken was gone, and another was virtually destroyed. In desperation, the Zerg commander brought his drones away from mining and began to attack. I connected to the Protoss commander quickly. "Pull back, there's a Fourrier force on the way, and we can't hold out against them and the Zerg."

I punched the seven button. "Spike, pull back, see if you can find a corner on the plateau, and hide there." Spike did as I asked, and the Protoss finished the second sunken, suddenly pulling back as another zealot was lost. The zerg began mining again.

I received a message from the Protoss commander. "Coward! If this is your idea of cooperation, our aid to your puny forces is over!" With that, the zealots attacked my marines. Cursing, I told Spike to pull back to the Zerg valley, and try to get behind the geyser there. Maybe the Fourrier firebats would catch the Protoss. They did, but I lost one marine, and another was wounded before my forces escaped down the ramp. The firebats quickly killed the two remaining Zealots, and discovered my forces. The Fourrier infantry advanced on my position, and Spike opened up fire. After the four firebats were down, we were left to 2 marines and Spike, so I told them to get up to the plateau and try to hide again. I lost one marine to Gauss fire, but once on the plateau, Fourrier's forces continued up to the Zerg base. After an appropriate amount of time, I sent in the marine to check what was happening.

The pirate forces had destroyed another sunken, but had been destroyed, two zerglings had survived, which were promptly mowed down by my marine. I told the marine to hold position and harass drones. Spike is ordered to move back home. In recognition of his abilities, I had decided to make him an officer and official squad leader. Drones soon kill my marine, who got one of them, and Spike left the area. At the ridge, he finds four zealots headed to the Zerg base again. I hear a faint hiss and "that's the stuff!" before Spike quickly ran away along the ridge, finding a path back to the base. The zealots continued along to the Zerg, who were definitely in trouble.

I punch seven again. "Spike, was that a stimpack?"

Spike spoke rather faster than usual, "Well, sir, see, you know, on that same day when I got the U-238, well..."

"Say no more." I smile. Spike was some character. I sit tight for awhile, and fill the bunker in the valley with marines. I send Spike and another five marines over to the forward bunker. I wait a bit for money, and ordered Sheryl to start another Command Center. I order the next SCV to start on an engineering bay.

The newly dubbed relations specialist signals that a message is coming through. It's hook-nosed Fourrier, "Captain, how good to see you. Why I didn't even know you were here. Terribly sorry about that little tussle between my boys and yours. We should cooperate against the Zerg, not fight ourselves."

I don't like Fourrier, and I have no desire to help him. "I think you might like to know, that Mengsk recently received the aid of a full wing of Legion wraiths. In addition, I have been authorized to offer you only these terms: After an short time mining to make up for any un-reclaimable expense here, plus a little extra, you may relinquish the system with all your mobile holdings."

"You realize that is unacceptable." Fourrier, narrowed his eyes, obviously regarding me with new hostility.

"I do."

"So be it." Fourrier terminated the connection. Sighing, I ordered another supply depot, a refinery, and more SCV's. I also put a turret up at the main command center, by the bunker. Somehow, Fourrier seemed like a sneaky person to me, and no wraith were going to just waltz in here. Surprisingly, the relations officer signaled again.

"It's the Protoss sir." He put Nezalis on the main screen.

"Legion commander, my forces have just repelled an attack by the pirate forces at great loss of life to Aiur. I must..." The Protoss commander paused, as if hurt, "I must request aid."

I thought quickly. The Protoss had seemed to have plenty of zealots early on. "Firebats got you huh?" The Protoss nodded slowly, only once. "I'll send a squad up to save your rear. You may have to wait a bit. Marines can be rather slow." I tried not to smile, and shut of the contact. I ordered more marines made, and sent Spike's 6-man squad up to the Protoss base. Several seconds later, I considered again, and told the four marines in the forward bunker to join them.

Inside the Protoss base, I found three firebats and seven marines attacking two cannons. Spike's squad attacked the marines first, killing them, and then the last firebat. When it was all over, the Protoss had one cannon left flaming in tatters, and my six marines stood there untouched. When two more zealots arrived from Aiur.. Well not from Aiur, from wherever the Protoss were based nowadays, the zealots promptly killed a marine. Spike immediately retreated back to the four marines arriving from the forward bunker, and killed a zealot losing another marine. The last zealot pulled back to a shield battery by the last cannon.

I jabbed seven. "Kill the pylon by the gateways." I motioned to the relations officer and demanded a message be sent to the Protoss. Nezalis came onto the main holo.

"You Terrans betray us against the Zerg, refusing to fight and leaving honorable Protoss to die! Then you deliberately wait to send reinforcements, after certainly warning your pirate friends about our weakness! Your race shall be eradicated!" Over my dead body.

"You ignore tactical imperatives, and attack the very forces who have rescued you! I shall extract a small payment, and leave you, because I still prefer your forces to the pirates or the Zerg. Just barely. I suggest you get some standing defenses. Fourrier should be back." I jab seven. "Spike, after killing that pylon, get back here and patrol until you reach the forward bunker. Then sit tight." I send the three marines I have sitting around the barracks to the forward bunker. My academy finishes, and I have 125 gas. I make a firebat, and two more marines. My second Command Center is finished as well, so I dispatch an operative team there, and order two comsat stations. Seeing I still have a few dollars in the bank, I start another turret, this one in the valley. I also get another few rounds of marines, rallying to the forward bunker. The firebat goes in the bunker. My mining officer notices the glut at the main base, and I send eight SCV down to the valley, one of them to build a refinery. Finding the lines thing now, I order more SCV.

When I realize I am flat broke, I check up on things. Six marines are being built, with 12 more marines, plus Spike, along with the bunker at the forward point. I have two command centers, with building comsats, and a bunker and a turret each. Gas is starting to flow, and my economy is going well. I leave the next move up to my opponents.

-----------------------------------------------------

This one is a bit shorter, well, I just pumped it out in about an hour and a half. By the way, this Fred is not playing anything like would, if you want to be sly and beat up on me, read my BR's that are on real battles. Another part will come out soon, probably today or tomorrow, whenever I feel like not studying for finals.
