It’s last assignment, to construct a bunker adjacent to the Command Center completed, the General stationed at this particular outpost had ordered him to return to mining without a word of thanks. Muttering beneath his breathe about the mistreatment of SCV’c in the ground troops, he grudgingly followed orders. Sweating in his suit, he returned his load to the command center with an air of impatience, last shift was almost over, he wanted to get some shut eye, even SCV’s have to sleep every once in a while. Dozens of other workers such as himself rushed about their business around him, an Academy in the works north of his position, yet another bunker recently completed, raising the count to four, a supply depot to compliment the six already pumping out foodstuffs for the contingent of privates and corporals. The Marines chatted with themselves standing outside the Barracks, mostly to ease the tension. Firebats cursed at the cold, and disrespected the Medics on station, stating that real med didn’t need their scars removed. More SCV’s came online to aid in the mineral collection as another load was transported the 300 yards back to the Command Center. Suddenly a low whine was heard approaching from the south. All eyes turned to see what the approaching vessel could be. A dark form was seen rising above the horizon, to far away to see, General Ertop slipped from his seat in the Command Center, muscles rippling beneath his trimmed uniform, and gazed out the window, his sharp calculating eyes judging the possibilities. ‘No shuttles are due anytime soon…’ he thought to himself, as he got on the comm. And relayed the order to be alert. The whine grew closer as did the ominous figure hovering above the valley. The General looked to his Sergeant, a young man who always seemed to be nervous, despite his surrounding, yet a genius in many fields.
“Serge, get a Comstat reading on that…” he said pointing to the blotch, “and quick”, he added.
“General! We have a lone Protoss Scout approaching fast, ETA 2 minutes!” the small man said with growing fear.
The general spoke softly, long years in battle teaching him that to panic was to die, “Fill all bunkers, usual 3 Marines 1 Firebat arrangement. Is our Machine Shop completed?” he asked. In answer a Master Sergeants’ voice filled his ears, “Ready to roll out!”
The General nodded and ordered the tank to Siege up in order to cover the mining SCV’s.
“On my mark Marines Stim up, and remaining Firebats retreat to the mineral line.” Ertop said to the Corporal of his Marine and Firebat contingent. Breath grew short as the tactical officer announced 30 seconds to engagement. 15. . . 10 . . .
“Mark…” was relayed to every comset in the small base. Gauss rifle fire was heard over the steady thrumming of Protoss technology.
“Ahhhhhhhhhh!” Screamed Private Mike Nunn into his mouthpiece, his body riddled with Protoss weaponry, he fell to the ground, a bloody mass added to the other Marine corpses. A Firebat went up in smoke as the Protoss guns found his frail body. Several more screams were heard as were new Marines reporting, freshly trained from the Barracks. Finally superior number won out as the Son of Auir disappeared in a rush of blue smoke.
All on station breathed a sigh of relief as the General orderd 4 more bunkers to be constructed, an Engineering Bay, and a Starport. Marines were being placed in bunkers as fast as they went through minimal training.
“They know were hear Sir…” Tac1 said to him softly.
After a moment of silence, the General nodded and orderd another Command Center built.
Freshly trained Private Nick Davis stared out of his bunker gun slot at the towering CC in construction, drawing his attention away from a cloud of dust billowing on the horizon. As the CC was finished, and lifted off to move to another location, he turned his attention back to gazing out across the featureless tundra. He gasped loudly, drawing the attention of the Firebat and other Marines stationed in Bunker C4. A swarm of Zerglings rushed at the encampment, blood lust gleaming in those god forsaken eyes. Private Davis barely had time to relay his sightings to Command when Bunker C3, 20 yards right of them, opened up with Gauss rifles, flashes of light from the muzzles flaring on his visor, Nick took the hint and pressed his chubby finger down on the trigger and U-238 shells rushed out to meet the oncoming attackers. The few of the ugly creatures that made it through the heavy rifle fire, Firebats cleaned up swiftly. Deep red blood ran down the bunkers once shiny surface.
General Ertop was shouting commands when the total enemy numbers were presented to him.
“30 Zerglings sir, more then any have ever reported seen coordinated in one attack. Our 14 Bunkers held them off easily, but one Marine was lost due to a rifle misfire, an SCV repair crew in doing routine repairs as we speak.”
“Good God . . . what is going on here?” he muttered to himself, while staring out at the confining Canyon walls.
